so tight and Jammin'!.......2007-02-06
So many musicians could take a lesson from Booker T and the MG's. This album is perhaps the tightest funky jazz recorded this side of heaven, and without synthesizers and electronic drums.
This is feel-good music to blast away on the car stereo with Pyle-Driver speakers! Some say they are annoyed with the "Doo-Wah" female vocals, but I think they just add to the overall splendor of this masterpiece! Especially on the "L.A. Jazz Song"- one of the tightest precision groove songs ever recorded.
Years ago I first found this album on 8-track in a machine I fixed for a friend. I loved it from the beginning.
Believe me when I say that if all you know about Booker T and the MG's is their songs "Green Onions," or "Time is Tight," buy this album and be blown away on the most precice funky jazz ever recorded!
Finest music ever recorded.......2003-06-17
At the risk of being accused of hyperbole, I can honestly say that the track "Melting Pot" is the finest piece of music I've ever heard. There simply are not words (at least not in my lexicon) to describe its sublime brilliance. I could mention the incredibly strong melody, its sophisticated big-city feel, the awesome interplay between Booker T's hammond and Steve Cropper's guitar underpinned by Dunn's bass and the genuinely unique presence of Jackson's drumming, but that would still not begin to do it justice. I fell in love with this track (and the rest of the album - especially "Fuquawi" and "Kinda Easy Like") about 30 years ago now (the album was about three years old at the time and already deleted - ridiculously enough). I've heard a great deal of amazing music since then, both new and old, but absolutely nothing touches this. In my opinion this is far and away the best album Booker T and the MGs ever made. The reviewer who said they went out in a blaze of unsung glory with this is absolutely right. They (and this album in particular) are still underrated, but at least the group have had some serious recognition now, and all or most of their material is available. Their music should live on forever.
5 stars is not enough.......2002-04-01
In all honesty, there aren't enough stars to rate this stellar album. Unfortunately, the last by these four members of Booker T. & the MGs. Booker T. Jones plays his B-3 organ with unbelievable fire and passion. Steve Cropper's rhythm and lead guitar is just unrivaled. Duck Dunn lays down some of his most inspiring bass lines ever, and as always, the perfect time keeping of the great Al Jackson, Jr. on drums makes this album a sonic delight from beginning to end. It opens with, in my opinion, the greatest piece of music ever recorded, the title cut, "Melting Pot". From start to finish it is perhaps, the most fitting example of each member's equal contribution to the sound and soul of the band. Four guys doing four distinctive things, with it all coming together like magic, and all the while, none of them having enough of an ego to detract from the other. Tragic circumstances made this the last outing by these four, and the direction they were going in here makes it all the more tragic. However, this was certainly a perfect crowning achievement for the group. Not many bands can go out as they came in. On fire.
Finishing Off In A Blaze of Unsung Glory.......2001-01-02
It was the last album of the classic lineup (almost - see below) and they went out, for the most part, in a blaze of glory which probably surprised fans of both their easy-grooving, compact instrumental workouts and all the work they had put in as the funkiest backing band in deep Southern soul. The remarkable achievement was that Booker T. & the MGs let their adventurism run free without burying entirely the foundation that got them there in the first place - the deep, wide, spine-slicing groove of bassist Duck Dunn and drummer Al Jackson, Jr.; the spare, effective chords and licks of guitarmeister Steve Cropper (who could also, in fact, take a short solo turn with the best of them and never forgot the blues entirely); and, the magisterially funky keyboard beds and punctuations of Booker T. Jones.
The title cut alone is worth the price of the ticket, a swirling, rolling union of esoteric, dreamy jazz and steady rolling funk whose simplicity and modal melodiousness beats damn near all the ill-begotten "fusion" movement hollow and doesn't let you out of its allure for its entire eight minute run. (Guitar chauvinists, please note - Cropper's brief solo turn here could be an object lesson of "less is more"; he nudges out, simply, a spare solo the shredmeisters would have nervous breakdowns trying to nail.) Almost as effective is the equal-length, soul blues workout "Kinda Easy Like," admittedly a kind of "Green Onions" played inside out but oh, what a groove they cut - and if, as I suspect, it's unearthed from their earlier days with original bassist Lewie Steinberg, well, maybe Lewie wasn't Duck Dunn, but he certainly knew how to lay down the blues bottom without obstructing the feeling; and, anyway, you're too busy enjoying the themes and punctuations Jones and Cropper lay across Steinberg's bottom and Jackson's crackling beat to nitpick.
The rest of the album veers between the two ends of the two longer cuts with equivalent grace and power, and by the time it's over you mourn the breakup of the band and even more so the fact that his still-unsolved murder (in 1976) means that, without Jackson, no regrouping of this exquisite outfit will ever sound quite the same. And you also realise that, of any and everything they did in a long and distinguished career, "Melting Pot" deserved way better than its original weak (on their terms) sales got them. You won't even mind the one or two legitimately lesser moments, so gripping is the meat of the album.
A jazzy, uneven swan song.......2000-04-06
"Melting Pot" was the MG's last album with their original classic line-up (Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones, Duck Dunn, Al Jackson). It's basically them stretching out in the studio. The songs are longer than usual and the style is jazzier than on any of their previous records. The song "Melting Pot" is great but the other tracks aren't nearly as memorable and some verge on funky Muzak and are almost instantly forgettable. This is an album that completists will want but that newcomers should avoid.

In 1956, American music pioneer Henry Cowell was sent by a cultural division of the U.S. Government on a musical tour of the world--not to spread his personal work, but to gather in the music of other countries to share back home. The first sojourn was to Iran... formerly Persia. With the musical knowledge he gained, he chose (besides recording music for Folkways records, later) to write a short composition that would condense many of the musical practices he encountered. The resulting piece was a reading not of specific Persian melodies, but of ambiguous Middle Eastern motifs, where the chatter of percussion meshed with violins and oboes took the slithery place of an oud (wooden instrument of the lute family). Persian Set, this merging of both Persian and Western instrumentation, became one of the most important hybrids of the American 20th-century canon. His other "sets" (on this CD), though composed earlier, use a similar method: the "American Melting Pot" series incorporates German, African, French, Slavic, and other motifs, and "Old American Country Set" has elements of the reels and hornpipes recalled from his childhood in the Midwest. --Robin Edgerton

Not What I Expected -- But Terrific.......2005-08-28
Having heard Cowell's piano works, I was expecting this to be atonal, highly percussive, etc. I was completely surprised by these compositions. They are closer to Debussey than other Cowell works. I am enjoying this CD immensely. Proof that sometimes it's worth taking a chance!

Customer Reviews:
Solid best-of collection from 1990-1997.......2005-08-18
Melting Pot is a sort of companion piece to Songs From the Other Side, both released at the end of the Charlatans' tennure on Beggar's Banquet records. While that other album contained the best of the b-sides, this is the best of the single and album material, and a very good collection it is. I seem to be in the minority here...I like The Only One I Know, Then, and other songs from that era, but not as much as the later material. The best songs on this collection, in my opinion, are Jesus Hairdo, Crashin' In, I Never Want an Easy Life If Me and He Were Ever to Get There, Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over, Here Comes a Soul Saver, Can't Get Out of Bed, Just Lookin', and One to Another. All of them are slices of British 1990's rock mixed with the best bits of late 1960's pyschedelic and Stones influences. If you've never heard The Charlatans, this and Songs From the Other Side would be great introductions.
Some of this great band's finest tunes.......2000-11-13
Everything From the dancy The Only One I Know and Opportunity, through their wilderness years of comparatively weak songs like Jesus Hairdo and Theme From the Wish (which overall don't worsen this much), and onto the scintilatng pop hits of North Country Boy, Just Looking and One To Another, is here.
Of course no 'Best Of' Collection will please everyone, and I have to say that Telling Stories' title track should've been here. Bullet Comes' sirly psychadelic touches would've been a good addition, and perhaps also a long-lost gem- Life Is Sweet, Chemical brotehrs featuring Tim Burgess on vocals.
Still, this shows why this is such a top band, the way they have seen in so many styles and kept following their own evolving path. And to correct the other review- they were not booted out by the record label, they chose to move on. So did Shed Seven for that matter.
Great musical journey of the band...but was it necessary?.......2000-07-13
I have never been a fan of 'best of' albums as they seem to be just a way of cashing in on fans, before dropping the band from the record company, as is the case of fellow Brit-Popper's Shed Seven and here to The Charlatans. Having said that, I bought it myself which renders my point useless.
The Charlatans are still to this day sadly overlooked, depite the fact that they are the soul survivors from the Baggy era and seem to improve with every album. This album shows you their smooth transition from acid-house to Brit-Pop and it includes some of the most memorable hits of the '90's.
'The Only One I Know' was the song that launched the Charlatans career using Hammond organ which has been prevelant throughout the bands career. Added to this are Tim Burgess' airy vocals typical of the so called 'Madchester' scene of the time. The equally impressive 'Then', hears Rob Collins use of Wurlitzer against Burgess's fine emotional tune.
The spacey 'Opportunity Three' sticks to the Baggy sound with psychedelic vocals and infectious bass and keyboards behind. 'Over Rising' carries on the album's high standard, this time incorporating backward vocals and excellent keyboard work from Collins showing how the band have remained distinct from fellow Mancunians The Stone Roses.
The repetitive 'Sproston Green' is saved by the rousing chorus and shows The Charlatans rockier side. 'Wierdo' relies too heavily on Collins' stop-gap organ sound (though he seemed to be enjoying it), and the album falls short of expectations for the first time. Its disturbing sound does fit, though, with the lyrical subject matter, and the song is partially saved by Mark Collins' guitar break.
'Theme From The Wish' is the first of two (unnecessary) semi-instrumentals which are odd choices for a best-of album. 'Patrol' sees the Chemical Brothers dabbing their hands into the mixing as the album reaches 1994.
'Can't Get Out Of Bed', 'Jesus Hairdo' and 'Crashin' In' were all written at a time when The Charlatans were unsure of their musical direction, and it shows as the songs fails reach the enthusiasm of Burgess' vocal performance. The psychedelic 'I Never want An Easy...' is one of the few songs from that year that really works on the album, as the song builds up to a great psychedelic-rock climax worthy of vintage Stones.
By 1995 The Charlatans were back on confident form shown by their willingness to produce the songs themselves. 'Just Lookin'' and 'Here Comes A Soul Saver' are the first examples of more thoughful, sensitive electric guitar being used by the band. Both tracks create a feeling not captured since their debut album 4 years earlier.
Then follows the first all out Brit-Pop tune - the cracking 'Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over' which points to the bands more melodic future.
Highlight of the album is the timeless rocker 'One To Another', taken from the bands hit album 'Tellin'Stories' (see my review). It captures the mood of the country during the Brit-Pop peak in the mid-90's and gave the band some rare recognition by being voted as 'single of the 90's' by music magazine, 'Melody Maker'.
The album concludes with the countryish 'North Country Boy' giving Burgess the chance to show his love of Bob Dylan that he would persue on the bands next LP 'Us And Us Only'.
Can't be called a great album, as it more a collection of hits. But as these money-grabbing marketing schemes go, The Charlatans' 'Melting Pot' is one of the most deserving.
Hop On Baby!!!.......1999-06-23
A cracking "greatest hits" collection from one of Britains finest talents. From the baggie opener "Only on I know" with it wonderful hammond sound courtesy of the sadly missed Rob Collins to the pop swagger of "North Country Boy",this would be a fine addition to anyones collection.
A must have!!!.......1999-06-02
While the Stone Roses never reached their full potential, the Charlatans have been going strong for ten years now. What can you say about a greatest hits disc? They are a great band, and if you like Brit Pop, you're gonna love this one. Check out the Chemical Brothers mix. Very cool. I know they are in the studio now, so the Manchester sound lives on!

SKA! The way it was meant to be........2006-07-07
I have never reviewed an item before, but on this occasion, I am compelled to. I have eagerly awaited this album since the first time I heard the Dualers singing on a busy highstreet in South London. "The Melting Pot" is simply the most fantastically refreshing collection of music and lyrics I have ever found on one album - and I don't say that lightly. The vocal sounds and styles of Si and Tyber (the brothers who, together are "The Dualers") compliment each other perfectly and the band (including the mighty brass section) brings it all together into an upbeat danceable ska-reggae sound of the summer.
The tracks, though predominantly underpinned with a traditional (original) ska sound, include a range of styles from reggae to acoustic ballad. Even the few covers, such as Derrick Morgan's "AIN'T THAT A SHAME" are delivered respectfully and BRILLIANTLY. There is the Bob Marley inspired "Wake Up" - and it does sound like it came right out of Trenchtown, the cheeky humor of "Jack The Ripper", the infectious brass dominated instrumental (mostly) "Last Call For Freetown" (written for their mother who is from Sierra Leone) and then there is the instantly relaxing "Take A Trip" which I can only describe as acoustic sunshine and smiles. "Don't Go" is upbeat danceable DualerSka at its best.
"Urban Spirit", was most interesting to me as it seems to reflect the images and emotions of years (literally) that The Dualers have spent busking on city streets across London in pursuit of their musical passion. It captures the inevitable reality of the argey-bargey rough and grime that exists for anyone struggling on what are not always so friendly streets and yet there still emerges the relentlessly optimistic outlook that ultimately permeates through all of their performances. By all accounts, The Dualers have spent some rough years working hard on the streets of London, building a loyal following one passerby at a time to make this album a reality, and clearly, it is precisely that depth of experience and effort that has produced such an incredibly genuine and uplifting work. What also shines through is a real passion for the original ska and reggae sounds of the 50's and 60's, that their Dad raised them on, and a desire to celebrate that music and perpetuate it through their own compellingly danceable DualerSka sound.
If you love SKA, if you love reggae, if you love music - if you ever loved anybody!, you WILL love this album (and you will dance the ska). To find out more for yourself, I recommend you visit their www.myspace.com/thedualers page, their website at www.thedualers.com or search youtube.com for "Dualers" and see amateur vids that have been posted by fans.
The only question I have is when is the next album coming out?

Basement Boys + Tony Humphries = House Music Bliss.......2002-03-08
The young cats, with their "harder and faster is better" thinking, might get a tad bit bored, since this soulful 4x4 straight up Deep House might hinder their XTC rush, but for us out there into the flavor Deep vibe, hailing from Shep Pettibone, Humphries, John Robinson, Garage, Zanzibar, etc... might just claim this joint as a true remedy for our deprived ears. Yes, yes, ya'll, House is back! Thanks to Mr. Humphries' HOT Bangin' mix, we can once again rejoice to the vibe of true Deep House.
Not Just House Music But Mansion Music.......2000-11-12
The Basement boys have found their nitch. This CD is truly a bass thumpin' groove. When listening to "Solid Ground" and "A Feeling", if you close your eyes you dont know if you are in a club or a down home baptist church. With "Love Love Love", you dont have to know a lot of words to sing along, but the music is so trance provoking that you just have to sing along. "Kong 98" is straight BASS in YOUR FACE! This song's tribal rhythms are so strong, you think you are back in the Motherland. And last but not least, the Basement Boys's version of "Bad Girls" will make Donna Summer wish she was in on the recording of this remake! It's drum tracks do things that the original could never imagine possible!
