The Greatest Soul Singer.......2006-09-29
What can I say, Marvin is the best of the best hands down. This is an amazing live album definitely worth buying (if you're a true Marvin Gaye fan). No one compares to his amazing talent. He may be gone but his sensual and soulful music will live on and continue to impact us forever!
Marvin's best live collection to date.......2004-12-21
Again, it's your boy Tim, on the 411 about Mr. Marvin Gaye again (you know I had to do it)...
I was meaning to post something about this great live album some time ago but didn't get a chance to and now that I got a chance to, lemme just say that if it came to great live albums, Marvin definitely gets an A+ for his accomplishments in 1977's "Live at the London Palladium".
Recorded during a tour at the Palladium at London in 1976, a 37-year-old Marvin reportedly still a victim of stage fright managed to make the most confident performer seem chummy and tame. Marvin's emotions always take over in anything he does - be it on a song or on an album or live onstage, where he was considered to be one of the greatest live performers of his generation. Is there no question why?
It's a shame though because people always look up to Michael Jackson for his stage dynamics and yet he always rely on "The Moonwalk" or any dance move so he can't sing. Marvin was definitely the anthesis (sp?) of all of that. Unlike Ashlee Simpson and Lindsey Lohan and other "lip-synchers" out there, Marvin Gaye was an actual SINGER. He didn't have to rely on no back track to prove he was GREAT. And back then if you couldn't sing to save your life, you would be yanked off the stage so how come they're not doing it now?
And it's another shame that this album or any other Marvin Gaye album pre-1982 didn't get Grammy recognition! Again, it goes to show you how critics can be so shady.
Anyway, Marvin shines through this emotionally-charged performance. Whether he turns it out in "Let's Get It On" or he takes us on a trip down memory lane on some joints back in the '60s or if he lets us remember how great "What's Going On" was or his great period of making duets or the fabulous show-stopping rendition of "Distant Lover", you know that no other artist in soul or pop music or rock music can come close to his magic.
And just when he's done, he comes even harder with "Got to Give It Up". Off the record, it's one of the greatest dance/funk records of all time. Without this joint, Michael Jackson's adult solo career probably wouldn't have happened (i.e., "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground")... and it wasn't just James or Sammy who gave Michael a little help. Marvin needs his respect, y'all.
AMAZING.......2004-09-02
ANOTHER AMAZING CD OF MARVIN'S LOOK FOR MY DOCUMENTARY "AIN'T THAT PECULIAR" THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MARVIN GAYE

The master's best live album........2004-08-03
Forget all of the many poor-quality live bootlegs and budget releases, this is the live album that features Marvin performing at his peak. The disc is at it's most amazing with Gaye's performances of his then-recent hits. Marvin's live renditions of "Since I Had You," "Trouble Man," "Come Get To Get To This," and especially his extended performance of "Let's Get It On" are absolutely phenomenal! The obligatory medley of `60s hits has been wisely revamped by rendering the usually chipper numbers in a slower, more melancholy style that gives the numbers a fresh spin.
I don't particularly like having the incomparable WHAT'S GOING ON songs crowded into one slightly rushed medley (these classics definitely deserve equal time), however the "Save The Children" finale does pack an unbeatable punch. The only real negative to the set is the horrendous "duets" medley, with the awful Florence Lyles butchering some truly great songs. PALLADIUM also contains the full-length 11 minute version of the hit "Got To Give It Up" (#1 Pop, #1 R&B), which is one of the greatest dance anthems to emerge from the disco area. The success of the single helped propel this disc all the way to #3 on the Hot 200, making it Marvin's second most commercially successful album behind LET'S GET IT ON..
GREAT!..........2002-12-27
This is a good concert. Worth getting just for the version of "Lets get it on"(for the breakdown at the end), and all 12 minutes of the stankfoot, booty-bouncin', floor bumpin, grooves of "Got to give it up". Will not dissapoint. Ain't nothin' but a party!...

That tornado--Johnnie Ray !!! .......2006-05-17
Want to treat yourself to a great CD full of classic pop vocals? Look no further--this one's IT! This is a very well done recording of Johnnie Ray thrilling his audience with his exceptional charm and talent at the prestigious Palladium Theater in London. Johnnie wowed the audience that night--and on many other occasions, too!
Oh sure, this recording has the usual minor imperfections that a live recording usually has. For example, there is that "popping" sound whenever Johnnie sang too close to the microphone. But you know what--Who cares? It's great material performed passionately from the heart. In fact, the audience reacts so enthusiastically it's a miracle they let Johnnie ever leave the stage!
Despite the fact that this is a short performance coming in at just over 32 minutes long, you get the complete and unedited song set and Johnnie sings eleven songs. Of course, Johnnie sings the song he was well known for entitled "Cry;" but you also get a powerfully delivered rendition of "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" in addition to "As Time Goes By." I also enjoyed the song called "The Little White Cloud That Cried." Johnnie's song set ends with another dynamically delivered performance of "I'm Gonna Walk And Talk With My Lord." Awesome! Johnnie is not remembered the way he should be remembered for all his fine contributions to the arts.
The liner notes are excellent, too! There are pictures of record album covers and there's a sweet essay from the heart by Johnnie himself. You get four nice black and white photographs of Johnnie including one taken of him singing and playing the piano as he performed this song set at The Palladium. The liner notes also include a review by Jack Marshall of The New Musical Express about how Johnnie wowed them with POW! that night at The Palladium. Lyrics are not written out for us; but Johnnie sings so clearly that you won't need them.
In short, this CD is a magnificent recording of Johnnie Ray live in concert when he was really beginning to hit his stride. His performance is solid and electric; and the screaming young ladies in the audience are ample proof of that!
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Johnnie Ray who want to hear him as he sounded live in concert; fans of classic pop vocals and people who want an EXHILARATING introduction to the talents of Johnnie Ray. This one's a keeper! Enjoy!
Your opportunity to hear Johnnie Ray live.......2000-02-14
This collection is a live performance, as indicated by the cover title. Johnnie sings some of his most well-known hits to an enthusiastic audience and keeps the energy going. What makes this collection interesting to me is that we are able to get a real sense of what it was like to be there with the audience, listening to this very soft-spoken yet dynamic entertainer. The pacing is great and he draws us in so that we feel that we are there. Of course,"Cry" is included but so are some ballads, as well as some very upbeat, gospel-influenced offerings. I enjoy this album because it is a rare opportunity to hear the reaction of an audience to this very likeable and talented performer. His deference to the audience is refreshing.

Bravo!.......2004-06-29
Jack Jones at his best...a truly great performance. His rendition of "Music of the Night" creates a new dimension to this popular Broadway hit as only Jack can bring to the stage. This reminds me of one of his shows in Manila (Philippines) when he sang "She" and brought the audience to their feet. What a wonderful way to spend an hour listening to a great performer as he weaves his magic!
A Powerful Performance.......2003-01-02
As with the previous reviewer, I have the full 74 minute CD that was originally released. But even an abreviated CD of this tremendous performance by Jack Jones is worth purchasing. Mr. Jones just simply at 55 (age as of the recording) has the chops and stage presence that his contemporaries would love to have. I was always a fan as a teenager in the 60's of his singles, and quite frankly based on this show I plan to extend my collection.
Live at the London Palladium / Music of the Night.......2000-08-16
I have the "London Palladium" CD which is re-released for the US as "Music of the Night". Looking at the song roster I can see that "Music's" selections are from the "London" CD, but there are some missing. "Right Here Waiting" is one that I particularly loved. It really spoke to my heart. Also missing is a "Soliloquy From Carousel" which really is wonderful. I don't suppose "Music" has the conversations from "London" either. As a long-time JJ fan I so enjoyed hearing him talk of his family. The "London" album is pure Jack Jones. He reveals his heart and the music soars. I have a feeling it is better than USA "Music" because of the intimate touches it allows. Almost the same....but not. Jack Jones is a very NICE person and it shows. He is truly a treasure to my generation - let us not lose him! In fact, this mature Jack Jones definitely stands above his peers. He still has "IT".
This was not the best cd I've ever heard........1999-08-25
I have not heard all of the CD, but the songs I heard, well, these were songs I'd know by heart by the original artists; however, when done by Mr. Jones, I barely recognized them! "From A Distance" was recorded to show us that, yes, Mr. Jones can still sing loudly and hit the high notes. This is a more delicate song, not one to be done in the Big Band-style favored by so many of the old-time Las Vegas entertainers. I think I can see why this CD is not available.

Customer Reviews:
A Legendary Performance.......2002-11-16
Dorothy Squires is one of the forgotten legends of British show business. In a career spanning morethan 40 years she hit the heights and plumbed the depths, finally dying in virtual poverty and obscurity.
This album covers the first two years of a revival in the seventies and eighties when she invested a pile of residuals and alimony cheques in comeback concerts at the Palladium, Drury Lane, Carnegie Hall and other theatres.
And she is sensational! Without the vocal quality of many of her contemporaries she had genuine passion and warmth and more spirit and flamboyance than most of today's batch of songbirds.
In addition, the songs are mostly sensational and include several that she wrote herself. The absolute highlight is her "Irony of War" medley, which blends many of the songs of the 1st World War such as "Dolly Gray" and "Tipperary" with more modern material such as Pete Seegers "Where have all the Flowers Gone". The medley climaxes with "Maman" from an obscure show called "Mata Hari" which is emotionally shattering and confirms Miss Squires as a genuine artist.
Aesthetically imperfect, musically suspect at times, this album contains some show business history. No wonder the 1st show sold out on the first day. I saw Dorothy Squires live several times in the 1970's and have never forgotten her. It is a pleasure to see her legacy has not been forgotten.
Are you a "Friend of Dorothy"?.......2001-04-05
If not, you'll be chomping at the bit for everything else by this Brit diva! Dorothy Squires was a beloved, albeit beleaguered, star for more than four decades, and she "threw down" on her '71 Palladium concert - that she paid for herself. She wrings the life out of classic showboaters like "For Once In My Life" and her theme song, "My Way". Dot didn't possess a wonderful voice like Garland or Streisand, but her performances are so intense that they really draw you into them. Every trial and tribulation this woman went through came out in her songs, and at times I felt that my hair was standing on end listening to her rip-your-heart-out renditions! The term "friend of Dorothy" actually comes from Ms. Squires' gay entourage, not the Judy connection as widely reported. She's a nearly-forgotten diva that truly deserves to be discovered by a wider audience.
What a find!.......2001-03-17
Browsing through a record store,i caught site of a (c.d),someone who seemed to be impersonating Shirley Bassey ,and not doing a good job,"Dorothy Squires",the name sounded even wrong, sometime later reading an article about singers,i read the caption Dorothy Squires, was Dorothy Squires, before,Shirley Bassey, was Shirley Bassey.
I had to hear this, and what a "REVELATION" it was.The songs,i had heard,a million times before, what COULD another singer do for them,i thought, was i in for a suprise, her voice in tatters, she brought an "intreptation",i had never heard before, the orcherstra was magnificent, that she wore her heart on her sleeve,is an understement, but this gal was no sobbing sal, this one had "SASS"with a capital "F",the banter between the songs was to be believed, another performer would have to script it.I have a hobby of browsing, and like to find something that really gets me hooked, well with this,i wont be browsing for a while.
Dorothy Squires - Simply at her finest!.......1999-06-22
Dorothy Squires was much more than a one time wife of actor Roger Moore. In her time she was the highest paid British entertainer in the UK and maintained a loyal following to the very end and even though she is no longer with us, these recordings show us the totally unique interpretations from a truely great artiste. Dorothy Squires was simply one of the finest artists in the world, even the likes of Elvis used to sneek into her shows to hear her perform. She had her many critics but Dot was above all that, she never short changed her fans and gave 105% every time. If you only buy one CD this year then you be mad not to choose this!
All the excitement of a LIVE Palladium sho by Dorothy.......1999-01-07
This collection covers two years of Dorothy's performances at the London Palladium. She appeared there two more times and recorded these also, but they are not available yet. All her hits are on the cd's as well as many standard songs. Sadly Dorothy died last year after a long fight against cancer, but these terrific recordings are available and if you like dramatic songsters who can belt out a ballad or move you to tears, this is for you!

Customer Reviews:
Still Waiting.......2005-06-21
This 2 CD set of the complete concert of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli live at the London Palladium is still not available. But if it ever gets released, a lot of fans will be very happy. No one knows why this recording has been withdrawn by Capitol Records. A lot of speculation has been stated, but no real reason has been said. We can only hope some day that this gem will be released. Even if the sound quality is not up to par, just to hear mother and daughter's only complete concert together from beginning to end will be most welcomed by all the fans of Judy and Liza.
As of Feb 2007 this CD is still vaporware.......2003-02-17
Although Capitol's first release of the complete concert on CD was announced as a September 2002 release it was delayed. I haven't discovered a new release date .At present it isn't available so don't waste time trying to find it used.
Double WOW!.......2002-09-01
This is a great album. Two great stars, one reaching the end of her career and another just begining.
Judy Garland is not in great voice on this album but she still manages to to give a legendary performance. She also has a slightly different line up of songs than on her usual live dates. You can really hear the pride in her voice as she introduces Liza Minnelli.
Liza Minnelli is fantastic. At eighteen, unknown as an artiste at the time of recording, Liza steals the show. Every song is performed with verve and complete gusto that we have now come to relate to this fantastic star. The highlight of the album has to be Liza's version of Who's Sorry Now.It will knoch your socks off!
The two duet perfectly on some very unusual songs such as Chicago and San Francisco. As legend has it Miss.Garland showed signs of her professional competitiveness on the stage that night not realising that Liza could actually sing as well as she could. Liza Minnelli later said that it was not her mother that she stood on stage with that night but that it was Judy Garland who shared the spotlight! Having said that, I think it is important to say that the concert was done in good spirit and deep love and respect.
Like many Garland albums this album has a very raw quality to it. A collectors album for many years both on vinyl and then on a rare c.d. Worth while buying although it will make my rare c.d worthless!
There is also a DVD of the second night concert they did where they sang different songs to this recording. There are no filmed concerts of Judy Garland (apart from her T.V show)so this concert, filmed at the Palladium, is well worth buying on DVD. The relationship between the two performers is extraorinary and laid open for all to see on this film.
For any fan or collector this album (and DVD) is a must and a real treasure of the great Judy Garland..... Having said that, you might guess that I am a little bit bias!
