FAVORITE SONG.......2007-03-08
THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALL TIME SONG. ALMOST HAVE IT WORN OUT. GREAT CD
Lady in Red: The Very Best of Chris de Burgh.......2006-10-30
1. "This is your Paradise" - This is a number 1 pick as the "Our Song" for a couple. The lyrics are clear and concise and have all the emotion one wants to convey to your mate. The music is well suited to the lyrics and leaves a "cannot forget the melody" as the take away from listening.
2. "Lady in Red" - My reason for purchasing the cd. Again, the lyrics and melody make this an all time favorite dance and sing along tune. So much emotion is conveyed and is truly a classic.
3. "Borderline" - With the war in Iraq, this is a "now" tune even though written years ago. The sentiment is so emotionally filling .. one cannot get away from the haunting melody. Comment: Seems there are several tunes on this cd that mirror the melody of "Borderline". A bit repetitious but nonetheless haunting.
What's Diana got to do with it?.......2006-02-06
I don't listen to Chris' music as much as I used to before but I know all the songs from this album. And I even own a cd with Lady In Red from 1995 and it is a newer recording of the song. Lady Di died in 1997 so Chris De Burgh couldn't have written the song after her death. Instead, it was Elton John who changed the lyrics of "Candle in the wind" (previously written for Marylin Monroe) for Lady Diana and performed the song at her funeral promising to never perform it pubically again.
Back to the review: Chris is an entertainer and yes, you may hate Lady In Red for being played over and over again but is it the artist's fault that he wrote a song that people want to listen to? I enjoy his music! Not everything has to be high-brow, sometimes we need to listen to love songs. Besides, there are some very good and intelligent songs by De Burgh, such as "Patricia The Stripper" or "Spanish Train" from the LP "Spanish Train". Spanish train is also on this album. I must admit that I don't enjoy his newer songs as much as I do the older ones and that's why the album gets 4 instead of 5 stars.

Amid fine work, a new star!.......2004-09-28
Baird, Russell and Van Buskirk give fine performances in a splendid
program, but tenor Frederick Urrey [his Foster recording debut?] is a sensation! A glorious voice, with a perfect command of style in
operatic, ballad, ensemble and even comic scenes, his Melinda May is breathtaking, his Beautiful Dreamer is the best on records, his
duets charm and his drunken husband is a gas! He has it all!! In my 25 years of total immersion in Foster and his era, I have never
even dreamt of hearing an artist of such stature. Foster was said to have a fine voice and to sing his music better than any other.
I pray we now hear more of SF's songs as he must have sung them!
Stephen Foster Would Be Proud.......2004-02-26
Linda Russell is a remarkable woman. I have every CD she has done and I've never been disappointed in the high quality recordings she releases. I consider her every bit of an historian as the authors of history books.
This collection of Stephen Foster tunes, one of two that Russell has partaken in, is a rousing collection of the musical sounds of the mid-19th century. Soprano Julianne Baird and tenor Frederick Urrey join in with Ms. Russell's alto vocals to make a truly remarkable ensemble (including the musicians playing the mountain dulcimer, fortepiano, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, recorder, and accordion - all on authentic antique instruments). All combined show off the genius that Stephen Foster was - the 19th century's top songwriter who wrote music for ALL time, not just his time.
But if it wasn't for the musical reenactors (on CD at least) of Russell and company many of these long lost gems might have stayed hidden, sadly unheard. Some choral music, a feel of opera, a bit of traditional folk all mixed together to make what I feel is an authentic piece of musical history.
Here's hoping that Linda Russell and friends continue in the making of traditional music - Christmas and popular.
Ms. Russell, do you ever tour? We'd love to see you here in Michigan!
Foster at his simple best.......2002-01-22
What a delicious surprise this little album is, and from the ..... date, it appears to have been around for a few seasons, but is utterly new to me. I am a Julianne Baird fan from the get-go, but was pleasantly taken aback at her appearance on an album of American songs with folk balladeer Linda Russell (who plays dulcimers, mountain fiddles and all manner of country instruments and sings with the earthy texture of Judy Collins). But as usual Baird finds a way to integrate her own exquisite sensibilities and artistry into the assignment and makes a touching case for the simple and heart-rending Foster tunes--this is, after all, "early music" in which she excels--American "Early Music." Tenor Fred Urrey is another find and he likewise blends wonderfully into the surroundings. In fact, the three diverse artists hit their stride in a haunting trio rendition of Old Black Joe. Keyboard and string instruments have a ghostly and authentic ring to them as well. indeed, after the pompous and overblown Foster CDs of better-known opera singers in the bins today, this is so welcome. A treasure!
Get it today.
Well-rounded and convincing.......2000-10-27
This is an excellent rendition of Stephen Foster's songs, capitalizing on the duality inherent in the repertoire: the beautiful parlor ballads and the rowdy folk-inspired tunes. Especially remarkable is the fact that the performers bring to the music the "early music" sensibility (Julianne Baird is renowned as a performer of Elizabethan lutesongs)--this sensibility urges the performers to be as historically accurate as possible, performing on original/reproduction instruments. Also of note is the fact that it is a collaboration between classical and folk musicians: soprano, alto, tenor, fortepiano, fiddle, mountain and hammered dulcimers, harmonica, recorder, and accordian. Linda Russell (alto, mountain dulcimer) is lyrical and moving with her "folkie" voice, perfectly complementing the other "cultivated" voices and grounding them on the occasions they come together in poignant harmony.
I only wish that they had incorporated a 19th c. parlor guitar to round out the ballads. Overall, however, one can well imagine that this is indeed the way the music sounded. As one of America's first "popular song" writers, the present performers succeed in doing him justice by incorporating many styles of 19th c. popular musics, avoiding the anachronistic "bluegrass" sound often used in performances of this repertoire, and never succumbing to waves of overly self-indulgent nostalgia.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Your search for good Burns songs has ended.......2000-01-29
Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

One of my favorites.......2006-11-23
This CD has a mixture of pieces that would have been performed in a domestic setting, from secular/devotional songs to verse anthems, virginal music and viol consort. Many of the vocal pieces are found in Byrd's "Songs of Sundry Natures." I particularly enjoyed the verse anthems 'Have Mercy Upon Me, O God' and especially 'Christ Rising Again' which is probably the finest recording of that well-known anthem that I've ever heard. Red Byrd captures the domestic nature of these pieces, which is nothing like the typical ethereal cathedral boy soprano/Tallis Scholars type of performance that you would normally hear. They have a very earthy sound and the viol consort plays quite energetically. I also am a big fan of historical pronunciation which they use. And of course I can never get enough of Caroline Trevor's fantastic alto voice. As a result, I've bought every Red Byrd CD I can get my hands on. Do yourself a favor and pick up this bargain CD.
One of the best of all recordings of William Byrd.......2005-07-14
William Byrd is regarded by many as the greatest composer England has ever produced, as a kind of musical Shakespeare. He was certainly one of the greatest of the composers of the Seconda Prattica from around the period of the Reformation and Counter Reformation.
The collection of consort music here is simply superb. Pieces like 'John Kiss Me Now' remind us of the fact that variation form began in England around this time. All of the performances are as good as any I have yet to hear of Byrd's music and Naxos clearly scored something of a coup when managing to sign up this group for a recording like this. This would be equally highly recommendable for three times the price. Just look at the list of performers and you will even find Tesser Bonner of the Tallis Scholars listed here. Needless to say she sings beautifully too.
Perhaps my very favourite aspect of this recording is the fact that period pronounciation is used. While some may feel this to be pedantic, the rather quaint and rustic sounding Tudor English pronouciation in my mind only enhances the characterfulness of the pieces. I must say it puzzles me why even the likes of Emma Kirky insists on using modern English pronouciation when singing Byrd.
This is a hugely enjoyable CD and for the price it is a genuine steal that enhances the image of Naxos as a company dedicated to quality music making, that puts the giant multinational recording cooporations to utter shame. For that Naxos deserve our accolade and support.

Killer Detroit Band.......2006-12-20
Basically, this is a really strong hard rock disc - and not metal, though it's just as heavy. Angie Zilla's drumming is powerful and the guitar is in your face. The vocals are a throaty bellow in Rachael's small voice - the result is cool, like Joan Jett at 13. The bass is barely audible on headphones, though, so that is a little problem. But don't think they can't play their instruments! The lyrics are gritty, funny and grounded in reality, which proves this isn't metal. My only gripe is the remix track, which is eye-wateringly awful. Well worth buying.
Smokin' Little Band.......2006-02-28
I caught these guys in a little club in Columbus about a year ago, and after they tore the roof off the place, I had to pick this album up. Lady Luck does a good job capturing the energy the band puts out live, with a quick pace and clear, punchy production. The tunes are straight ahead, catchy and powerful hard rock; kind of like Motorhead (...). Rachael May has a great, rough voice, Angie Manly's drumming is tight and energetic, and Rachael and Kim Essiambre's guitar / bass work is rocking (if not overly complicated). This kind of stuff is usually not my cup of tea, but I'm still jamming this album regularly. Buy it.
Supersonic Action-Packed and Estrogen Powered.......2005-12-06
Here's an up-and-coming band that deserves to be so famous that they inspire a worldwide backlash from mere jealous mortals. Broadzilla are a jawdroppingly powerful metal band out of Detroit with this era's most effective combination of melody and muscle, and this album is their 2001 masterpiece. The Broadzilla sound is built upon the relentless and maximalist drum onslaught of Angie Manly and the booming classic metal basslines of Kim Essiambre. The lightning rod of the band is singer/guitarist Rachel May, a vocalist of great emotive power and a lyricist of serious skill and insight. This album's top highlights are the neckbreaking "Y Did U Have 2B Psycho," a remorseless buttkicking both lyrically and musically, and "Four: Twenty" which delivers a monstrous groove and Rachel May's best sultry vocal performance. Broadzilla's creativity as players and songwriters is also evident in the minimal AC/DC-like strut of "Diamond Sex Goddess" and a bluesy boogie rave-up in "On the Run." And the band opens up new future avenues for their sound in the ominous and extra-long "High Society," not to mention a brilliant cover of "Love Child" (originally by Diana Ross and the Supremes) in which the band brings out the pain and redemption of the lyrics in ways far beyond the sunny Motown delivery of the original. If you're a heavy rock fan looking for a brighter and more exciting future, Broadzilla is your new favorite band. [~doomsdayer520~]

Customer Reviews:
it wasn't very good..........2005-05-14
I personally didn't like it, just my opinion. I don't usually buy soundtracks but the music on this one wasn't very good!
TERRIBLE!.......2005-05-14
OMG, this is really not a very good CD... why would you want to buy a soundtrack for a horror movie anyway? and listen to people talk on it... honestly! It's really a pointless CD and a waste of money!
David Hess is NOT on this CD!.......2005-01-28
A search for David Hess turned up this CD, which he is NOT on. David contributed SIX songs to the Cabin Fever Soundtrack, including the closing credits. Do not buy this CD if you are expecting to hear David Hess music from the film, those songs are available separately from David Hess at his own .com
Awesom Stuff.......2003-09-19
The Cabin Fever soundtrack captures all the fun and insanity that makes the movie such a riot to watch. The soundtrack features a few cool songs from the movie (The Turtleneck's song is hilarious) as well as some well placed dialogue cuts, but for the most part this soundtrack is a show piece for Nathan Barr and Angeleo Badalamenti. Nathan's tracks are great mood pieces that work great with the film and would make great Holloween music if you need some for a haunted house. As far as Angelo's work goes...it's awesome. His stuff is more subtle than Nathan's work and its adds a nice contrast to the other tracks. Some tracks feel like they came straight out of Twin Peaks. Great stuff! I highly recommend this soundtrack!!

Customer Reviews:
The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11
Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!
Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15
I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.
Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.
I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.
