The Beastie Boys named a track on Check Your Head after this 1971 all-instrumental session. The pre-"Jungle Boogie" Gang here sticks mostly to cocktail-funk jams such as the Latin-tinged "Sombrero Sam" and a swirling version of Isaac Hayes's "Ike's Mood." They charge the tempo only on a pulsing "Ronnie's Groove" and the bonus track "The Penguin." Not as essential as the hit singles that were to follow, but if you're curious about Live at P.J.'s, you'll probably dig it. --Rickey Wright

One of the underrated ones of Kool & The Gang.......1999-10-18

Somehow this CD got me caught. I listen to it over and over again. The grooves of N.T. (as sampled so many times) and DUJII got me in a very serious enjoying mood. If you like K&TG without the cheesy vocals of J.T. Taylor you have to get this one 'cause a) it was out-of-print for a long time and b) it really shows their live power and c) it's an album without one filler. You can buy K&TG's albums (if you're interested in good music) until "Something Special" comes up. That was the first one with Cheesy Taylor and is to avoid for true Jazz- and Funkateers. Something special are the albums before "Something Special". And now you just have to buy eleven great CDs by K&TG all released before "Something Special". What to buy next: "Wild & Peaceful", "Spirit Of The Boogie", "Music Is The Message", "Live At The Sex Machine", "Kool & The Gang", "Good Times", "Kool Jazz", "Light Of Worlds", "Love & Understanding" and -because of three tracks- "The 12" Collection & More".

This live outing shows Kool & The Gang in their infancy. Formed as a jazz group, they quickly evolved into a horn-based club band playing hits of the day along with their own original songs, and this package represents them at this embryonic stage in their career. The only significant hit here is the preachy "Who's Gonna Take the Weight," which became a Top 5 R&B hit. The rest of the album shifts between jazzy instrumentals, dance floor jams, and contemporary R&B covers from the early '70s. A fine live representation of the band before they broke through in 1973, this is still the portrait of a band in search of an identity and sound that they hadn't quite discovered. --Tom Vickers

Kool & the Gang Live and Funky.......2002-07-15

This is an excellent sample of the original Kool and the Gang (pre J.T. Taylor) with a raw, jazzy, and funky set. Recorded in 1970 (and released the following February), this features some excellent instrumentals and a nice streetwise vibe that captures the mood of the era (althlough it still sounds very good today). The rendition of "Trying to Make a Fool of Me" sounds like a Black college marching band playing during the halftime crowing of the homecomeing queen (which is not a bad thing). But the covers of "Walk on By" and "Wichita Lineman" add some creative, jazzy improvisation that takes these songs to another dimension. "Who's Going To Take The Weight" is the fisrst of the gang's message songs, but it doesn't beat you over the head like many others from that time, and the previously unreleased "Kool It, Here Comes the Fuzz" sounds like the soundtrack to a Black exploitation film (some two years before the genre began). This wonderful live set does the amazing feat of capturing the mood of the era while still sounding enjoyable today.

I live in NYC and have seen Lure live several times. Their music is very well produced (Dan Yashiv, the leader, is a recording engineer, recorded DJ Spooky) and Kristen's full-ranged vocal is suberb. It's trip hop with a very human face. Kristen lyrics are hounting, and her singing style is hypnotizing. The songs are simply beautiful. The best this genre has to offer. The best New York scene has to offer.

The start of something big!!.......2004-04-01

There comes a day when you listen to a CD for the first time and just get overwhelmed. That's the feeling I got upon listening to the debut release by this Saxophonist from the Ukraine. Konstantin has a nice music resume and some frequent flyer mileage to his credit. He has toured all over the world showcasing his talent and has finally settled down in Holland, where he recorded this CD. The minute you put the first song on, "Downtown", you are hooked!! His style reminds you of David Sanborn and Candy Dulfer. All of the tracks on this CD are awesome!! I especially love the tracks, "Sunday", "Morning Song" & "Wild Fellow". I never got tired of listening to it! This CD is, without a doubt, the best recording I've heard in a long time! The last time I heard a high quality CD like this was the debut of another one of my favorite saxophonists, Boney James over 10 years ago. The CD has finally made it way to Amazon.com for worldwide purchase. If you don't get any other Smooth Jazz CD in your life, BUY THIS ONE!! I can only see great things happening to this up and coming artist!!

flat out Melodic Groove!.......2003-04-27

This is an abundance of tracks that i can't get sick of. I listen to every kind of music known to man and these songs on this CD don't get old. I've been listening to this disc since it came out in 92. I've also seen this band perform these songs live in Pittsburgh 2x and I have to say no other band played their tracks to such perfection with allowable room for improvisation then these cats. Hiram brought a fantastic band and his drummer could simply lay it out. If only radio would've picked this up and that "smooth jazz" of today would bring back this groove-jazz we would have something to listen to. Thank you Hiram for not putting any sax on these tracks and thank you for bringing such a great mixture of talent to the recording table. I've bought this CD for friends and family and have constantly been thanked over and over again. You CANNOT get sick of these tracks. Buy it now! and if you own it, play it again.
