If the reggaeton revolution slowed for a second and you're not sure why, consider the comings and goings of Daddy Yankee: Three years have passed since he lit a Latino fire under the non-Latino world with "Gasolina," and despite the best efforts of vast clusters of tough-talking, body-rocking followers, only he, apparently, can keep it stoked. El Cartel: The Big Boss is a 21-track thrill ride destined to restore reggaeton's lost luster. The first few minutes creak--as intros go, "Jefe" is on the longwinded side--but from there it's a riot of bump-bumps, nemesis-bashing, and quick-tongued braggadocio. All credit to DY for again climbing atop a swirling mass of beats and remembering to swagger appealingly on the way up, but the small army of producers and friends who line up to pay the big boss respects on this disc also deserve their props: Fergie makes an impact on the Scott Storch-produced "Impacto" without forcing it in an overly mainstream direction, "Papi Lover" with Pussycat Doll Nicole Sherzinger busts out a cool bhangra-ragga vibe, and Will.i.am winds up "Plane to PR," a slight but contagious ode to Caribbean senoritas, tight. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
THE KING OF REGGAETON, DADDY YANKEE, returns with his new album "El Cartel: The Big Boss". After international platinum success with his first 4 albums, Daddy Yankee released, "El Barrio Fino", which went PLATINUM in the U.S alone, and solidified himself as the leading pioneer of the reggaeton movement. "El Cartel: The Big Boss" is the follow-up studio album everybody has been waiting 3 years for. Having enlisted super-producers such as will.i.am and Scott Storch, Daddy Yankee more than lives up to the hype and delivers his most multi-dimensional and complete album to date.
Customer Reviews:
Good album, inconsistent in production values, a bit too long.......2007-07-27
Best to review it, track by track.
Jefe - What is this, Hammer revisited? As an opener, it sucks. It is not a bad track, though.
En Sus Marcas - nice beat, difficult to understand at times; somehow this is Rompe, Revisited.
Cambio - clever use of rhyme and lyrics, slightly bachateao, so to speak.
Fuera de Control - identity crisis... would have taken the dembow away and leave as a straight hip-hop track.
Impacto - first installment, again, good beat, energetic; second one, less so.
Ella me levantó - a cliché from beginning to end, hate it. Would be loved by the average 15 yo. Sucks donkeys.
A lo Clasico - somehow reminds me of Calle 13's "Se Vale To-Tó". Has Voltio written all over it. Rompe The Third.
Bring it on - freshest track in the whole album... who cares if he's trying to pander to the English speaking audience?
Who's Your Daddy? - great, DY's voice is a bit buried in the mix. A bit too busy, but great.
El Celular - nice, would offend his die-hard fans, but great sounding, even if the lyrics are a bit clicheish.
Ven dámelo - filler track, period. Gasolina sin plomo.
Papi Lover - as a crossover track beat-wise, nice effort.
Qué pasó? - as a crossover track, better effort than Papi Lover, but would tolerate the previous' subject matter better.
Mensaje de Estado - as far as tiraera goes, this is the best curse streak I've heard in a long, long time. W&Y, consider yourselves dissed. My concern is that tiraera is so old by now...
Tensión - lyrically busy, good beat.
Soy lo que soy - autobiographical tracks, nicely written, but spare me the Popeye treatment... I Yam What I Yam, revisited.
Coraza divina - nice lyrics, awful beat. Proves that DY can get serious and not too saccharine while getting personal.
Plane to PR - great beat, really infectious... hate the idea of oversimplifying things and conveying a clichéd image of Puerto Rico, a la Will Smith's 'Miami', but good dance track
Me quedaría - somehow reminds me of Vico C, ol skool. Good.
Todos quieren a Raymond - great subject matter, great lyrical images. Weird beat. I hate the title, he probably was watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" on his first class seat
Overall impression - DY is trying too hard to please too wide an audience, and his talent for lyrics is getting diluted. Should he be making an international impact on the same league as Ricky Martin, Raymond better remember that Ricky's last English album was a miserable stinker, because it was too busy and unfocused. This album is way too long. It consists of quite a few gems buried between a lot of filler. The braggadocio is starting to take its toll, but he's still the best lyrics delivery man in the business. When he's experimental, he's good; when his lyrics are focused, no one can touch him. Beat-wise, this album is inconsistent. Three stars.
Crossover to the American Market Gone Wrong.......2007-07-20
I've always liked Daddy Yankee, since I think he's the best latin reggaeton artist there is right now... but this album was almost like him fighting his roots, since he includes many famous singers (which none has to do anything with latin music), which is something that makes you wonder... for what market was this album really released for... something that makes me mad... since he's famous because of his latin crowd.. not the american one (and he sings reggaeton.. he's not a rapper)
Now speaking of the songs in the album... most of the reggaeton songs are good (except the one with Héctor "El Father", because it sounds like the beat was made in a bathroom with a leaking pipe), they are a little different than the songs we're used to... since the dembow(reggaeton beat) has changed.. and it's too similar to hip-hop (most of the album ), with slowed down rythms. I personally hated all of the hip hop songs in the album (since as I stated before, he's a reggaeton artist)since they sound to be directed to the american audience and not his true fans...
I just hope that's his next album goes back to his real roots... and that in his songs... he stops mentioning that he's awesome
The Big Boss.......2007-07-20
Daddy Yankee has done it again. I have not been able to quit listening to this cd since I recieved it. The music is infectious.
The unbiased opinion of an biased fan.......2007-07-14
I've spent the last 3 days listening to El Cartel: The Big Boss, and I'm happy to report that Daddy Yankee's latest is actually very good. Back track- I picked up Barrio Fino about this time in '05, and truthfully, it took about 3 months to grow on me. Since then, however, it's become one of my all-time favorite CDs, and I still enjoy listening to it. Fast forward- The Big Boss grew on me in about three minutes. What I especially like about the tracks on The Big Boss is the skillful way that DY experiments sound but somehow manages to stay true to his reggaeton roots. The CD doesn't try to be too hip hop and seems to be tailored to an "American" audience without pandering. I found the blend of English and Spanish languages well thought out, playful, and pleasant. When I hit [REPEAT]- Bring it On, Papi Lover, Plane to P.R., Impacto (sin Fergie), and Me Quedaria. Anyway, as some would say "it's Daddy Yankee, so you know it's going to be good!"
Daddy Yankee has done it again.......2007-07-08
El Cartel is a hot cd. It has a different flavor of reggaeton that makes you want to dance endlessly. Impacto of course is the most bangin' track on the cd. Some of the tracks are in English, which allows the non Spanish speaking audience the opportunity to truly appreciate this genre of music and Daddy Yankee's extreme talent. As Daddy Yankee says the King is back!

Jimmy Reed-The Essential Boss Man.......2007-02-12
Great, great box set with ALL the hits and ALL THE lesser known classics!
When I'm in the mood to hear Jimmy Reed songs I want them all together so I can "relive" with my buddies those days and the great sounds that we danced to and partied to in our youth! We would ware out the grooves on those Silver and Purple Vee Jay 45's! Terrific liner notes also! A must have!
Greater than Elvis.......2007-01-26
Jimmy Reed was, arguably, greater than Elvis. He was a terrific songwriter, a singer with a laid back delivery, a screeming harmonica, and a cool guitar. Don't be fooled by this nonsense of him being unable to carry a tune, or that he was no master of the guitar or the harmonica. Maybe so. But the seemingly simple arrangements of his songs are really so subtle, inventive and marvelous that Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Keith Richard listened to his records incessantly, trying to figure out how he did it. And the Grateful Dead and Steve Miller loved him.
This being said, it is worth having all of his CDs.
To start, buy this 3-CD box set (and then Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall and Rockin' with Reed). Don't make the mistake of buying another CD boxed set, Jimmy Reed: The Classic Recordings, on the Tomato label. It has a good compilation, but plays at a very low level and has lousy sound quality. An insult to this great blues master's work.

brilliance &%**( brilliance.......2005-08-02
Jagger shines when removed from the ramshackled ineptitude of his sophomiric R&B infused garage band. His songwriting seems to elevate itself with the absence of drug riddled back up man Keith Richards. The production is crystal clear in clear contrast to Stones releases of the time. It clearly outshines any of Richards solo works. Jagger is the true musician behind the Stones biggest hits as evidence by the sheer exuberance of this solo outing. (in case anyone missed the sentiment of this review, I have added this parenthetical note noting the sarcasm of the sentiment of this review)
He's the boss on his first solo album (except the title song).......2005-07-26
Before the Stones' Dirty Work hit the shelves in 1986, Mick Jagger released his first solo album a year before. Like Phil Collins doing a different sound to distinguish his solo material from Genesis, so too does Mick to differentiate She's The Boss from another Rolling Stones album with guitar chores from Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend and some keyboard work by jazz great Herbie Hancock. It has a smoother sound yet manages to rock with a pop polish. Most of the songs are produced by Bill Laswell, but Nile Rodgers of Chic does his hand on three of the tracks.
Those are "½ a Loaf", which features a sound one might recognize on Like A Virgin, also helmed by Rodgers, who also does guitar here, with former bandmate Bernard Edwards on bass. Having a clandestine affair is deemed "half a glass, half a dream, half a life" and in the bridge, a frustrated Mick just says to heck with it and let it all hang out. He then calls upon some overprotective guardian to "Turn The Girl Loose." Featuring a strong bass, Mick really belts it out when he yells "let her out of jail." It even has Alfa Anderson doing a sassy rap declaring her independence and free will at the end. "Secrets" shows that a respectable wife isn't that respectable but has been really out on the town.
Even though not produced by Rodgers, the sound on the first danceable single "Just Another Night" is a disguised cousin of "Material Girl" in terms of sound. It hit #12 on the singles chart, somewhat low considering his long history with the Stones, but it was a #1 mainstream rock hit. Jagger seems to be shucking off the bad boy persona of the Stones: "Can't you see that I'm human" and "I get hungry, I get thirsty, I get moody, I need attention." Some great percussive effects by Sly Dunbar here.
The closest thing to the Stones comes from Keith Richards' co-penning of the energetic rocker "Lonely At The Top" a warning on how fame, the thing "that leads young girls astray" eventually strips away one's soul once one reaches that pinnacle. One might indulge Jagger, as his band is considered one of the greatest bands in the rock and roll pantheons.
Another lively track, "Running Out of Luck" has Mick on harmonica. This also spawned an extended concept video of the same name, and which I presume had the videos for "Just Another Night" and "Lucky In Love" on it.
Where the Stones were chauvinistic on some of their previous albums, a few songs champion the woman. Other than "Turn The Girl Loose," there's "Hard Woman," a tender and melodic ballad with some strings that's actually one of my favourites tracks and could've been a single. Lots of famed players are here, Tony Thompson of Chic and the Power Station on drums, Jan Hammer on piano, and Beck and Townshend on guitars. Despite the woman being materialistic, cruel and unfaithful, he has no regrets of the time spent: "Alone at last, I could've loved in vain for a thousand years, I have to let her go." The tongue-in-cheek title track, this time is a humorous role reversal, with Mick as the submissive half: "she's the boss in the office, she's the boss in the kitchen, she's the boss in bed, she's the boss in my head." In a spoken bedroom banter later in the song, he says stuff like "I got a headache," "I gotta wash my hair" and that old favourite, "it's my time of the month." OK, Mick, I don't think we needed to know that.
"Lucky In Love," the other single, is a humorous tale of someone who doesn't come up trumps in gambling but when it comes to the ladies... Well, Mick is one with the ladies, to be sure. And the challenging rap at the end, with Mick betting and raising with the full house he's been set up with is amusing. I like this better than the first single, so why it managed a #38 showing is beyond me. Top Ten for sure!
Hardcore Stones fans may not take too kindly to this smoother pop/rock sound. The solid and consistent She's the Boss showed Mick could successfully break away and do his own thing without his bandmates.
Okay, maybe worth three stars.......2005-04-14
Mick Jagger's first solo outing is now a very dated 80's relic. Not without its charms but difficult to take seriously.
I sort of like Just Another Night and Lucky in Love but the production is so Miami Vice / Pastel / Cheery / Reaganesque that it is virtually unlistenable now. I can just see Keith and Ronnie giggling over this one. And Jeff Beck playing guitar? Why? I wonder if he was snickering as he picked up his paycheck.
This record has its moments and in no way is it as bad as the follow up, Primitive Cool. That stinker killed any momentum and goodwill Mick had built for a solo career.
Mick Solo.......2003-12-03
She's the Boss (1985) was Mick Jagger's first solo album. In my view it is much better than Goddes in the Doorway or Primitive Cool, but not as good as Wandering Spirit--which is an excellent record.
She's the Boss is a good record, but it's not great. Just Another Night, Lucky in Love are kind of catchy songs, but the album does not have much personality, not much depth. It pales in comparison to Keith's first solo effort.
That said, I enjoyed listening to this record for the past 17 years. Mick's voice is still at his best, some songs are truly nice (Hard Woman is in the tradition of the great Rolling Stones slow songs), and Jeff Beck's solos are sheer talent--listen for example to the solo on Hard Woman or on the otherwise mediocre Running out of luck.
It's a 4 stars

WAY too much organ........2007-07-25
I love Wes's playing, but there are too many tracks with organ that overwhelms the sound of the guitar.
On the first few tracks, the organ, honestly, sounds like it belongs in a circus.
There are a few songs that redeem this album, like "Wine and Roses", so I would get it because The Man is playing, but "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" is a better choice.
I gave it 4 stars because of, you guessed it, the annoying organ. "Sorry" to all the keyboard players who dig that aspect of this album.
Hope this helps.
Yes, it is boss guitar.......2006-09-17
Does Wes Montgomery live up to the boastful title? That's the main question any review should answer. YES. Wes' playing is generally similar to his other jazz-era (vs pop-era) songs. He's jaw-dropping on the faster songs. Wes is good on the slower songs, though he tends to be too nice. "The Incredible Jazz Guitar" is a better album, but "Boss Guitar" should be in every fan's collection. The trio format works out fine. There's a good reason Grant Green made so many albums with organ - it's very compatible with guitar. Mel Rhyne gets to take the first solo in "Dearly Beloved" and in general provides solid playing. Jimmy Cobb is, as usual, fantastic.
Innovative.......2006-07-31
Wes Montgomery was truely gifted at the guitar. He couldn't read a single note of music but his style was very distinct, he used his thumb to play the guitar, he also used incredible octaves in his style as well as tremendous solo's. Boss Guitar for me was Innovative for any jazz guitarist. It showed Montgomery's creativity as a musician. Besame Mucho is a beautiful song, Dearly Beloved shows Montgomery's creative side, Fried Pies is my favorite, for me it has everything a jazz solo should have octaves, block chords, and tremendous playing from the heart. I recommend this to any guitarist out there weather you play the blues or rock. Try learning these solo's and i guarantee you will be one hell of a great guitarist. This is Highly Recommended!!!!!!!
Subtle Intense Jazz Chamber Music.......2004-03-29
Haven't heard a trio album ever sound so complete. Perhaps Bill
Evans but that would be a completely different comparison. This
timeless album seems to have no beginning or end. You will get
listners lost in the complexities of this album if you hit the
repeat button. The unlimited playablility is perhaps the
strongest attribute. Full house is the first choice but the Wes
album you may play the most is this one. Just a suggestion and
no more. Yes, Incredible Jazz guitar is great but I don't play
that one too often because of this one.
Boss Guitar...you ain't kiddin'.......2003-07-06
I agree with a reviewer who stated that not only is Wes obviously comfortable with the format here (organ trio with Mel Rhyne and Jimmy Cobb), he is sounding true and playing at a level that even by his own standard must be considered "cold-blooded" (as my friend and Wes 'descendent' Jimmy Ponder called it). The way Wes builds his single line solos only to break into impossible chordal ones just when you think he has gone the distance makes me shake my head in amazement, still, after nearly 30+ years of hearing it. While it is true that Wes played by ear, he did eventually know most of the names of the chords he played, and, not that it matters one bit, understood "scales" simply by having mastered them before "knowing" them in the traditional sense. But I digress - "Boss Guitar" is one of Wes' finest Riverside recordings, for whatever reason. I was too young to meet Wes, but those who knew him say that, unlike many players, what one hears on these recordings is the man...so in a way, everyone who digs this knows a big piece of Wes Montgomery and his 'boss guitar'.

While hardly as superfine a Ross vehicle as the Chic-produced Diana of a year later, 1979's The Boss does offer a few tracks of prime Ashford and Simpson-helmed disco-pop. Foremost among them are the title track (also heard on this augmented CD reissue in an even better 12-inch remix), "No One Gets the Prize," and "I Ain't Been Licked." All three offer a mix of sass and vulnerability that's among the diva's most pleasing stances. "All for One" and "I'm in the World" try too hard in their ways to reinvent Ross's showbizzy anthem "Reach Out and Touch," but neither truly offends. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Still a classic in 2006.......2006-11-12
This album is one of my all time favourites by any artist. Diana is at her peak and the music has been sent direct from heaven courtesy of legendary writers Ashford & Simspon. I still get goosebumps when I play the classic dance numbers "No One Gets The Prize", "The Boss", "I Ain't Been Licked" and the smooth mid-tempo grooves of "It's My House" and "Once In The Morning". And the ballads are wonderful too - esp "All For One". We went and saw Diana live in concert in Melbourne and Sydney just a week ago (Nov 2006) and the crowds went wild when Diana belted out "The Boss" and esp when she let loose with her vocal dynamics at the end just like on the 12" extended single (included on this CD) - of course a standing ovation and a stunning vocal that everyone deserves to hear/feel. My three favourites on the album are "No One Gets The Prize", "Once In The Morning" and "It's My House" - all glorious productions. Diana fan or not, do yourself a favour and buy this classic album!
"THE BOSS" IS A CLASSIC~BRAVO DIANA !!! .......2006-10-10
When Diana Ross went into the studio to lay down the tracks for this delicious classic that I have loved since its release, this great singer was in rare form and did some of the most inspired singing of her long and totally brilliant career...from the opening "No One Get's The Prize" it is clear that this is going to be one hell of a ride with a legendary singer in top form!!! Diana is loose, funky and supremely soulful and the material and arrangements are equally inspired and superb. The follow up release "Diana" which is another tremendous classic went through the roof but "THE BOSS" has always been my personal favorite from this Supremely Talented Diva...next track is the ultimate survival athem and "I Ain't Been Licked" is another reason why "The Boss" is the ultimate musical treasure chest of classic performances as Diana infuses this great song with a edgy and urgent vocal that is nothing less than stunning...one of those incredibly great songs that you will play over and over and love it more with each listen...Diana needs to get back into the studio with Ashford and Simpson as they are a match made in musical heaven..."All For One" is another glorious track with Diana in top ballad form infusing this classic song one with a completely gorgeous and passionate vocal performance that is nothing less than brilliant...title track "The Boss" is another song turned into an athem by Miss Ross as she infuses this great song with a tremendous vocal that is loose and wildly soulful...every song in this great collection is a winner and this is a must have for anyone who enjoys a legendary singer at the peak of her wonderous powers...BRAVO DIANA and thanks for this wonderful musical treat that is your complete masterpiece for us all to savor and enjoy until the next one...a great companion to this awesome CD is the Import DVD "Diana Ross In Concert" which is a incredibly great HBO special taped in Las Vegas during "The Boss" tour and this amazing 80 minute tour-de-force performance hopefully will be released in the US!!!
A Masterpiece.......2006-04-16
This album is the greatest achievement of Diana Ross' career. Miss Ross sings in a way that she has ever in her career. From the opening track, "No One Get's the Prize," to the title track and especially, "Once In the Morning," every vocal is a thrilling surprise. The vocals on every track show that Ross can sing the way she's always demonstrated during her live performances, but seldom on records. This record is one of Ashford and Simpson's best production, along with Gladys Knight & the Pips', "About Love." If you are a new Ross fan, this is the record the have, in all it's remastered glory. Simply, a Masterpiece!
No doubt!.......2006-01-31
The Boss is The Bomb. Yea, yea, the next album was "chic" and all that, and perhaps commecially her best seller. When they were in vogue, put anyone on a Chic groove and they sold by the truckloads, i.e. David Bowie, Sister Sledge, etc. Even Lady Madonna got some of their flavor. Having said all that, if you must own at least one Diana Ross album, it's got to be this one, hands down.
Who's the boss?.......2006-01-20
You're right: in another review I referred to The Boss as being Diana's best solo effort after her first solo album in 1970. Any similarities? You bet! Ashford & Simpson are back in charge here, as there were in the late sixties and early seventies. Apparently they know how to get the best out of Ms Ross. Strong tracks with excellent rhythm and back-ups. Catchy lyrics for Diana to sing in a voice that seems to have a range larger than ever before. Looking back at that period, I feel this must have been the top of her success. Surely, about a year after this record 'Diana' was produced by Edwards and Rodgers (Chic), but personally I believe she emulates he Chic-sound on that one (she had no choice), whereas The Boss is still very Motown, combined with late seventies disco. Diana's voice sounds great here. From the eighties recordings it slowly loses its power, perhaps because of the lesser material to sing, who knows?

Despite the middling quality of his previous two albums, Snoop Dogg's sixth full-length effort firmly places this "professor of G-ology" back on top of the game. Snoop comes off surprisingly spry on Paid tha Cost, offering one of his best-balanced albums in years. His pimpalistic style is still draped in silk and fur, especially on "Bo$$ Playa," "Suited 'n' Booted," and "Ballin'." But "I Believe in You" is an unexpectedly sensitive, irony-free love ballad, while Snoop's pairings with the Neptunes and Gang Starr's DJ Premier result in two of his hardest hitting cuts ever, "From tha Chuuuch to da Palace" and "The One and Only" respectively. Combine this with his unfettered attack on Suge Knight ("Pimp Slapp'd") and this is a Snoop Dogg charging forward rather than lazily leaning back. Taking the helm at the dawn of the new decade, this old Dogg still has some new tricks. --Oliver Wang

More For Alicia Jiles Right.......2006-08-12
Ha ha ha!!!! I know why you haven't sent a review full of comebacks. Exactly you got your a** kicked, admit it. You are with no doubt one of the worst reviewers on amazon. At least I didn't have to write a whole lot hate reviews to get the amount helpful votes i've got. I know there are a lot of other dumb haters like yourself who will give you helpful votes for your stupid hate reviews. Snoop Dogg is tha doggfather of rap and is better than Nas and Eminem any day and if you don't like it than you can suck his d***. I can see you simply have no idea what your talking about. When you say you'd judge records as good records despite the offensive content, than why did you leave Doggystyle the same review and rating. Well you admitted that you enjoyed Gin And Juice. You couldn't grasp all his misogyny when you were 11 so you enjoyed it. Then you get put off when you work out that it has offensiveness, but its enjoyable despite that. Doggystyle is a sensational production and very easily the best rap album of all time. I think you'd better delete your review for Doggystyle, because you only judged it on its offensiveness to woman and you should have judged it as a good record despite that. Why did you tell me I don't look like Einstein, well your hating, hypocrisy and arrogance ain't making you look like a genius either. I honestly have no idea why you think amazon needs your reviews. Reviews on this site are actually supposed to help customers to chose whether or not to buy the product. You hardly ever even discuss the products, mostly you just plain talk rubbish about the people. I can't why amazon excepts your reviews. Oh and I read your comeback on Dixie Chick's Fly for S Moore from Texas. Obviously you don't care about anyone on amazon other than yourself. People are sick of your dumb a** reviews and your so arrogant that you don't care about what they think, why are you being a hypocrite by saying Bill Maher is arrogant and thinks the majority of America is dumb when you present yourself exactly the same. I suppose you've met Snoop Dogg and he said hi Biaaaatch and slapped you in the face or something, huh? Well unless you have than your presenting yourself dumber than a box of rocks for thinking that just because he talks like that when his being recorded that his like that in real life. He also talks about murdering people, do you really think that he does all that, confesses it in his music and stays out of jail?, Well if your thinking that he in real life does hate woman than you must also think that he actually also goes out and murders people and sells drugs etc when his got about 50 million in the bank and he hasn't gotten any jail sentences yet. You have no evidence to support your arguement that his actually like that in real life when you've never been around him when his not being recorded. Its just the whole gangsta character, all gangstas talk about that sort of stuff in their music. And you think that Snoop Dogg fans have an I.Q. equal to their shoe size. God well you seem to be a fan of Eminem and he curses a hell of a lot, talks for a good amount of time about raping and killing woman and talks about being gangsta and s***. You said most of his music is really good and a good percentage of it contains a good amount of the things I listed. So if what you said is true than you must have an I.Q. the same as the people your accusing. Fans aren't dumb, haters are dumb as f***!!!!!
Snoop did alright with this release. Its a pity he can't do as good as Doggystyle but its still alright. I'm a diehard fan of Snoop so I had to get this and being such a big fan I was able to enjoy it. He has his amazing voice and a few dope beats. This is another album for all Snoop fans.
Hey Alica Jiles Right Guess Who's Back.......2006-07-31
Thanks for saying something for everything I said in my review as Tupac. Now how about I do the same thing to you.
Paid Da Cost...isn't a good record, therefore it doesn't deserve a good rating.
_Now you tell me, you didn't say s*** about what you thought of the record in your whole review.
You must be if Snoop Dogg is one of your favorite rappers.
-So i'm dumb just because I can enjoy good hip hop music, I get it.
If you know it, it makes me wonder why you like it so much, unless you share the same sexist mentality. That's something I wouldn't readily admit if I were you.
-How about the fact that not all of us are concerned with the s*** your concerned with, jacka**. If you think that anyone who can enjoy Snoop's music shares the same sexist mentality, think again.
Hmmm, more misogyny. Seems like Snoop Dogg's lyrics are rubbing off on you: calling a woman a "biotch." Very original. Who says rap music holds no effect on its listeners? Also, why do YOU have the right to express your opinions, but I don't? More sexism.
-Ever heard of an insult? Rap music hasn't effected me 1 bit, I just like to insult retards like you who can't take a hint. Well if you want to p** people off with your stupid reviews than go ahead. Just proves that your a pure idiot and a vindictive cow.
No Eminem is not more offensive. Furthermore, Paid Tha Cost... is not a good record. If it were, I would judge it as a good record despite the offensive content. If you want to do background checks, I suggest you look at ALL my reviews, not just the ones that help your argument.
-If you don't think that Eminem is at least as offensive than why not stop writing dumb reviews and go and listen to some of his albums? Well like I said, now you tell me what you think of the record. You never said s*** about it in your review. Well just because you don't like it doesn't mean its a bad record. Also you gave Snoop's Doggystyle the same review and rating and its one of the top rap CDs of all time. Explain that? Honestly, You can't be serious about your reviews. Your a joke, get over it.
I guess if having a problem with the way ghetto morons are degrading and mistreating women and showing that they have absolutely no class is a sign of idiocy, then I'll be an idiot. Furthermore, your rant doesn't exactly make you look like Einstein.
-Why don't you just forget about it. Who's forcing you to listen to Snoop? If your life is having a problem with music artists you don't even have to listen to than get a life! Thanks for saying i'm no Einstein, Lots of people consider me a nerd and i'm glad you don't think so.
I know you probably abuse women and think you're the boss of them, but I'm not one of your ho-es. Don't tell me what to do.
-Your determined to spend your whole life being a total [...], aren't you? Why are you s*** talking on Snoop?, he doesn't s*** talk on you.
Fo-sheezy my neezy - Hmm it looks like the Snoop hater is talking Snoop talk, How pathetic you are.
Any way this is an alright Snoop album. I miss the old Snoop Doggy Dogg however I lke all Snoop's albums. My fave famous song would have to be From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace and my fave non famous song would have to be Bo$$ Playa. I own all of Snoop's albums and this isn't my best but I would'nt say its my worst. If you like this you should alos get albums like Da Game Is To Be Sold Not To Be Told, No Limit Top Dogg and Tha Last Meal.
Hey Alicia Jiles Right Shut The F*** Up!.......2006-07-27
Well well well, I knew you'd come back with a neg review. Well i'll just give you another neg review. No i'm not some stupid sex friek and even if I was as if i'd want to like you said pull my pants down in front of someone as ugly as you if my life depended on it. Yeah i'm a Snoop fan so what? the problem with you is you seem to have a problem with that. Reviews posted on this site are actually supposed to help customers to chose whether or not to buy it. Yeah his offensive to woman boo hoo. I don't see any other woman having a cry on this site like you do. That may be because most woman are grown up enough to except that CDs like this are out there and they just don't have to listen to them. I may feel different about Snoop if I was a woman however if I was a woman i'd really give all the crying about it a miss. I understand, however if your life is hating on people like Snoop for this than get a life. I'm sorry but Eminem is very offensive to woman. He even talks about killing woman let alone raping them and calling them bad names. So don't even get me started on that. I'm trying to tell you what to do as if your my b**** or some s*** like that am I, seriously give me a break your way to old for me miss. I'm just saying your reviews are very useless and inappropriate and anyone who says they are helpful is dumb as hell. You need to learn to stick to your own s***. If you hate Snoop's albums so much than why waste time writing unhelpful reviews? And seriously get over your whole attitude, you sound like a spoilt teenager in your neg review on me. And that s*** you said about me not being Einstein, thanks I'm glad that someone doesn't consider me a nerd.
Go ahead write another neg review full of smart a** comments. I will just laugh at you.
I'll write about the album now that i've got that over with. This is definitely not Snoop at his best however if you are a diehard fan you can appreciate this. Snoop's voice is definitely not a let down, it is just something you can't not like. My fave famous song would have to be From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace and my fave non famous song would have to be Bo$$ Playa. This wouldn't be Snoop's best no limit but it is still kick a** material
P.S. To Alicia Jiles Right - I Hate TLC!
Alicia Jiles Right is a Smart A** Moron.......2006-07-09
I'm so sick of this "Alicia Jiles Right" moron. I can't figure this clown out, she gave Eminem's music 5 stars and said its really good and Eminem is just as if not more offensive to women as Snoop Dogg. You obviously think we're all dumb don't you? Snoop Dogg disrespects woman etc do you think we don't know that? I don't know you but I bet your are pure idiot. Lay off Snoop Dogg and any other rappers your trashing neg reviews on. Keep your f***** opinions to yourself Biotch!
Anyway I miss the old Snoop Doggy Dogg. It seems this guy can't top his debut however if you are a fan of Snoop like me you should purchase this album along with all the others
Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, Da Game Is To Be Sold Not To Be Told, No Limit Top Dogg, Tha Last Meal, Dead Man Walkin, Tha Eastsidaz, Duces N Trayz THe Old Fashioned Way, R & G The Masterpiece, Welcome to tha chuuch Da album and probably some more I have not mentioned. Like I said it's not as good as some of the others but if you are a true Snoop fan click add to cart now.

Great Box!.......2007-02-21
Proper Records has drawn together an impressive array of tracks from most of Parker's studio recordings from 1944 to 1951, when Bird was working for the Savoy, Dial and Verve labels. This set contains a 48 page illustrated booklet with information on the present recordings, as well as generous biographical material. Each disc comes packaged in an individual cardboard sleeve, nestled in the box with the booklet. The sound quality is sufficient while the material is extensive, making this a great boxed set at a great price.

Excellent overview of Charlie Parker's career.......2006-10-23
This is the probably the best value available right now for those seeking a single, affordable overview of Bird's entire career. This includes the highlights of his Savoy, Dial and Verve studio recordings, and the sound and presentation is first-rate.
There are a lot of great packages of Bird's work on the market right now, and so you can choose a lot of different ways to put together a Bird collection. But if you want a single, broad overview at a very reasonable price, this is highly recommended.
A Proper introduction to Bird.......2006-03-16
One of the nice things about these Proper sets is that they can get you into music you might otherwise pass up. I had always been left a little cold by Bird. I kept reading "genius", and none of the recordings I heard spoke to me in that way. I think the problem for me was, Bird was so influential that virtually everyone who followed tried to play like him. This had the retroactive effect of making Bird sound like everyone else. But with these four CD's, you eventually stop listening for the genius, and start listening to Bird. Then, the real Charlie Parker emerges. This is an essential collection, and as with most of the Proper boxes, the sound is very good and the price is right.
Comprehensive and Interesting.......2005-04-11
As the above reviewers have pointed out, this is a great addition to your collection: low price, good quality reproduction, good selection. On playing them chronologically, one sees the growing sophistication of Bird's phrasing and the increasing repetition. The earliest cut comes from 1944 and as with most of the tunes, it's a 12 bar blues. Here, Bird is aggressive, fresh and incredibly swinging. It is interesting to contrast the '44 bird with that of the Jay McShan days where his phrasing was simpler but no less swinging. Then come the Miles Davis quintet sides: still fresh, inventive and swinging. However, one can start to notice the reacurence of pet phrases. To me, the Davis solos are just as interesting and less repetitive. The repetition is most evident on those tunes that are based on the 12 bar blues. Bird's solos almost become a "draw it by the numbers" construct, especially as the end of the decade nears. For each four bar portion of the blues there are a collection of stock phrases to choose from and the listener can almost anticipate them. It must have been horrible to be so talented, so brilliant, so accomplished technically, so complete stylistically and to basically run out of interesting things to do (other than drugs).
This is the one ..........2002-08-22
This has almost all of Bird's studio work on four CDs without any hard-to-hear live recordings or annoying partial takes. With masters from Savoy, Dial and Verve, it covers more ground than either the Rino collection or the Savoy and Dial box, which has 8 discs and costs five times as much. It doesn't have every tune you can imagine, for instance with 101 tracks there wasn't room for one version of Confirmation. And there are times when it would be nice to listen to Bird puzzle his way through all the takes of Parker's Mood. But this box gives you four great CDs that each play over 70 minutes and showcase a stage in the career of the greatest improvisor in modern jazz. Even if you own the other collections, this one is worth buying. This is the Parker set I will listen too again and again, and I'm so happy it has finally been put together in this form. The book is weak -- full of trivia and short in insight -- but at this price I won't complain (any further.)

Tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons had a huge sound, and a Coleman Hawkins-inspired ability to belt the blues and caress the ballads with equal facility. This 1960 session, part of a lengthy series of recordings Ammons made for Prestige, shows off his strengths impressively. His broad-toned reading of the ballad "My Romance" confirms his reputation as the master interpreter nicknamed "Gentle Jug." The superbly-attuned rhythm section of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, drummer Arthur Taylor, and congero Ray Barretto offers particularly brilliant support on Eddie Haywood's memorable "Canadian Sunset," the uptempo bop exercise of Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and the swing classic "(Stomping at the) Savoy." --John Swenson

America's Pavarotti.......2007-03-25
Jug was a class act with a heart as big as his physical size and tone. Chicagoans greeted him like a war hero on the two occasions he appeared just after doing time at Joliet-- the second an especially cruel and unfair sentence of seven years for a parole violation. Because he usually followed Sonny Stitt--the "most perfect" of all players--in their tenor battles, he had the advantage of playing to low expectations--and he rarely failed to rise to the occasion. In fact, just being able to match Stitt was sufficient to assure a victory.
Stitt, the saxophonist most identified with Charlie Parker and reputed to have been bequeathed the "keys to the kingdom" by Bird himself, would seem to outmatch Ammons. But those listeners with longer memories or inclined to do a bit of research would know better than to underestimate Jug, the son of the highly regarded Kansas City boogie woogie pianist, Albert Ammons. Gene was still in his teens when Billy Eckstein hired him to sit next to Dexter Gordon in the same big band that included Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, and Fats Navarro, not to mention Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray, Art Blakey and Sarah Vaughan! At the end of his sets in the late '60s and early '70s, Jug used to love running down the line-up for his audience, all of it building up to his dramatic punch-line: "And what were all of these musical geniuses doing night after night?" (Pause) "Holding whole notes while Mr. B was balladeering on his hit songs, "I Apologize," "I Want to Talk About You," and "I'm Just a Prisoner of Love." (Pause) Who was a prisoner?"
The present RVG remaster captures Ammons at an optimal time. Following his last stay at Joliet, Jug would be greeted by a musical scene radically different from the one that he had left--Coltrane, Hendrix, Joplin not to mention the Beatles and Stones had reshaped the sonic environment he was accustomed to. Unfortunately, Ammons tried to adjust with uncharacteristic altissimo shrieking and forced elocution leading to unmistakable intonation problems. But Boss Tenor, recorded in 1960 and with the supremely gifted, exquisitely tasteful Tommy Flanagan on piano, finds Ammons with nothing to prove and doing what he did best--creating beautiful, heart-felt yet logically-constructed melodies and producing a sound that for many listeners has never been equaled--big but never "hard," simple and slightly raw but too lyrical and personal to be mistaken for R&B. True, it was gospel and blues-derived but free of any Motown shine and polish.
Recently I read a review crediting Ammons with inspiring R&B sounds of pop saxophonists like Junior Walker. If there's any question about the difference between a Junior Walker and a Gene Ammons, go directly to "My Romance," more full-bodied and sensual but no less sensitive than Bill Evans' version on the original Vanguard sessions. Ammons takes the tune through once, entrusting Richard Rodgers' poetic melody to the breathstream of the tenor's seductive voice, as reassuring as it is alluring. In short, it's as good a sound as the tenor saxophone is capable of producing. So, too, in a battle of tough tenors Ammons could play one note for the hundreds spewed forth by a Sonny Stitt or Johnny Griffin. Invariably, it was the right note.
Oh Yes!.......2006-10-29
A Professional Tenor Sax Recording Artist suggested I listen to Boss Tenor because of Gene Ammons incredible sound.
This is Tenor Sax on the BIG side. I recommend this album to Saxophone players so they may marvel at the strength and tone of Gene Ammons playing.
Musically it is a fine album that is most enjoyable, but I have only given it four stars. It does not rival the best Be Bop Tenor albums ( A Love Supreme, Saxophone Collosus, Go, Inner Urge, See No Evil) but it is still a very fine example of a top player at his best.

Pretty Good.......2006-07-29
This was a very unique item. Fans of the series will enjoy it. At times some of the tracks seem out of place when out of the game, but that's more than made up for by the many powerful and classic tracks that these CD's have. The first CD is more techno-inspired while the second is more operatic. It's good music to do push-ups to or to drive to. Especially the first track of the first CD.
