Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Jackson brothers' second album is more solid than you might expect from even the great singles act that they already were. In addition to radio classics (the title track, "The Love You Save," and "I Found That Girl"), the quintet and their production team apply themselves to fine versions of other Motown stars' hits and a tough version of Funkadelic's funny psychedelic-soul nugget "I'll Bet You." The preteen Michael emotes more than credibly on the likes of Stevie Wonder's "Don't Know Why I Love You" and Smokey's "(Come 'Round Here) I'm the One You Need." Like Eric B. and Rakim did later, he might have declared "I ain't no joke," but his performances here did it for him. --Rickey Wright

Funny, funny, funny.......2007-06-27
If you love comedy you need this CD. Rodney Carrington is one of the funniest comedians today. I also purchased his DVD "Rodney Carrington: Live at the Majestic". This DVD is his "King of the Mountain" album but the fact that you actually see him acting out the show makes it that much funnier. My favorite part is the "Chicken Song". If you get the DVD (which I highly recommend) it will keep you laughing long after you see it. Trust me you will want to watch it over and over again......... I know I did.
Another Good Collection.......2007-06-19
This is another entertaining collection of countrified humor from a man who mostly has one thing on his mind; that is the thing that most men have on their minds. He is self deprecating and usually funny. That's enough for me.
Rodney is also known for his songs. These are usually scattered throughout his albums but in this one, they are all concentrated at the end. First come the live performances and then there are some repeats using studio recordings.
Its not a bad collection
Absolutely hilarious!!! .......2007-06-11
This is one of the funniest CD's and/or albums I have ever listened to. I heard these live on tour but, I still laugh like crazy. Also, Angel Friend is a very touching tribute to his good friend and fellow comedian Barry Martin. The song actually brought me through a very bad time and gave me hope when I lost my best friend.
Funniest Man In Comedy!.......2007-06-05
I've watched this dvd 5 times already and could watch it 10 more...you will laugh the whole time its on!
Rodney almost does it again........2007-05-21
This was really funny, but I don't think it was quite as funny as his earlier stuff.

Not bad, definitely not great.......2007-01-07
I bought this because I remembered this band hit from the '80s, which is Be Near Me. The other songs are ok, but nothing particularly special.
The BEST album of the times........2005-10-05
Almost no one gets it.These guys, are a band! So when they did what great bands do ,nobody cared. This record Rocks, it swoons, pokes fun at thr governmet,Makes you cry, laugh, think,in all, is just perfect. The production, vocals and tightness of the band is as good as anything done in the 80's bar none. BUY IT! listen close and get in on the joke..
ABC from A to Z.......2005-09-17
To cop from Elvis Costello, the debut album from ABC was the dance floor equivalent of "a chainsaw running through a dictionary," albeit one that you could cut a serious rug by. "The Lexicon of Love" was, quite simply, one of the best albums from the MTV British Invasion of the 80's that brought forth the likes of Culture Club, Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. Songs like "Poison Arrow" and "Look Of Love" were lyrically literate, lushly produced disco-popera's with more than a hint of David Bowie and Roxy Music.
Of course, after a perfect debut, ABC had a heck of a time ever bettering their first act. The second album was a turn towards rock, best shown by the single "That Was Then But This Is Now," which tried to pair the lushness of the debut with a solid rock guitar. More representative of the band is "SOS," but the sharp turn in style - and the less than enthusiastic response to "Beauty Stab" - sent Martin Fry and Mark White into a genre hopping tailspin for "How To Be A Zillionaire." Although "Be Near Me" maintained the stellar quality of the band's earlier singles, the synths became top-heavy and made songs like "Vanity Kills" and the album's title track more novelty than classic.
A near fatal brush with Lymphoma brought Fry back into focus for "Alphabet City," a solid and coherent album that yielded ABC's biggest chart single, "When Smokey Sings." Matching the Motown worship of the debut with a new sense of reserve, "Smokey" and the other singles, "King Without A Crown" and "The Night You Murdered Love" found Fry and White living up to those early Roxy comparisons. Unfortunately, whatever straightforwardness ABC gained on "Alphabet City" evaporated on the glib "Up!," trading in solid popcraft for uninspired sounding pseudo-soul, although "One Better World" at least has its heart in the right place. Their slick and lush sound was also rapidly falling from favor (Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails happened to release their debuts the same year "Up!" came out), and ABC went on hiatus soon after.
With two new songs ("Blame" is killer) and Fry back on the road, ABC has a solid legacy of singles to draw from. So while their albums after the debut were often spotty affairs, "Look Of Love" holds its quality better than many of the video here-today, gone-later-today sorts that populated the MTV Airwaves in the 80's. This collection also neatly supplants "Absolutely ABC" by adding the new songs plus two others, and nixing any worthless remixes. After this, recommended listening is "The Lexicon of Love," a five star album in its own rite.
retro-future genius.......2005-09-07
a seminal collection of wonderfully remastered gems by one of the best acts to come out of the eighties.
ABC crafted a sound and an image that was akin to crossing Bowie with electronica/dance: smooth, hip, stylistic and enduring. The songs are really ageless, offering those of us around in that decade the pleasure of looking forward to re-discovering the brilliance; and those perhaps born in that decade the chance to look back with wonder. Hopefully both of us can expect future creative output by the band!
Long live ABC! (I'm going to see their show in Dallas tonight!)
Gotta see them live on this tour!
Schizophrenic?.......2005-06-29
ABC has never been the same since the smashing debut Look Of Love. There are one or two gems post, for example Ocean Blue - an absolutely brilliant song, perhaps their best. Putting the entire lot into one album is kind of a schizophrenic experience. The How To Be A Millionaire phase was just boring.
And according to the reviews this collection contains Man Trap, the smoky remix of Look Of Love, but I don't see it anyway. Man Trap is a rare gem indeed - literally. It may have served this compilation to have the B Side of Ocean Blue - The Atlantic Mix is even better than the original version.

Michael Giacchino is the rare composer who's graduated from video games (including the Medal of Honor series) to high-profile big-screen fare (The Incredibles). But the most important aspect of Giacchino's career may well be his collaboration with writer-director-producer J.J. Abrams, for whom he's scored Mission: Impossible III and the television hits Alias and Lost. The latter is a hybrid show--part mystery, part psychological drama, part science fiction--and thus requires a nimble composer who can switch moods quickly. Culled mostly in chronological order from the popular series' first season, this CD shows how the score contributes mightily to Lost's artistic success (Abrams himself composed the 16-second "Main Title.") Giacchino's signature move is an abrupt surge of low-throated trombones, which creates a deep-seated anxiety and raises the viewer's heart rate without fail (check out the end of "The Eyeland" for a typical example). But he deftly varies orchestrations and ambiences throughout, equally at ease in pulse-pounding dramatics ("Getting Ethan," "Run Away! Run Away!") and quieter atmospherics ("Thinking Clairely," "Booneral"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

What about the music on Hurley's headphones?.......2006-11-05
Where can I find that? Not a score - but actual songs. I've been looking for them, or at least the credits so I can buy them. Any help??
Highy recommended.......2006-08-24
Some reviewers have suggested the CD is at times too quiet, only to have the silence shattered by loud bursts. Well, duh - that's how this music was written. What would these reviewers suggest? Artificially amping the levels of the quieter moments? Or muting the louder ones?
Look, this is not the kind of CD to listen to in a car while you are driving down a dirt road in a heavy rainstorm. It demands a quiet room (high quality speakers help). But don't be misled to believe the mix is bad, or the recording quality poor. This CD sounds amazing and the levels are natural. Which means some moments are quieter than others. That's how this music works (and WHY it works so effectively).
The song selections are solid. Many slower tracks mixed in with the best action/adventure-themed pieces from the show. I especially appreciate how many of the beautiful themes are repeated in various slower selections throughout the CD. It ties it together nicely.
To best experience this music is to hear it while watching the show itself. But these selections can really be enjoyed out of the context of the show and on their own. Highly recommended if you are a fan of the show - just don't listen to it while you are remodeling your house or working out at the gym.
It's Lost music(!), but...........2006-07-30
As much as I love Lost, and truly adore the soundscape that Michael Giacchino weaves under this thrilling show, this CD doesn't reflect that. Now before you go running off to a glowing review to convince you to buy(I'm not discouraging you either, just informing), allow me to explain.
This CD is the raw tracks recorded for the show, it has no flow, no emotion, and isn't interesting. Often the CD goes on for 40-80 seconds of only the faintest of some noise somewhere very far away, listening in the car gives the impression of silence......so you turn up the volume a little more.....ONLY TO HAVE SOMETHING VERY LOUD SURPRISE YOU(and perhaps damage your speakers!). Not good.
Perhaps someday Michael Giacchino will revisit this compilation and do something similar to Martin O'Donnell of Bungie Studios has recently done with the also beautiful and sometimes haunting work composed for the video game Halo 2 (Halo 2, Vol. 2 [SOUNDTRACK]). He released the raw tracks on CD early on for fans, like this CD, and now has gone back and stitched pieces together to create longer and much more cohesive suites that recapture some of the feelings and moments from the game.
So, I give the CD 3 stars. It is what it says it is, the Lost Soundtrack, and some of the tracks are beautiful. It's just not a good CD.

Pure Pop Brilliance.......2007-07-01
I'll never forget the first time I heard 4 ever 2 gether over the headphones of my walkman while i sat on the bus on my way to work all those years ago. I ran out right away and bought the Cassette, and at the time, I had no idea how many times I would listen to this Cd and what it would do to me. I still listen to it often, it is simply pure pop brilliance! Oh, and the lyrics are catchy too.
2002 U.S. Reissue Is The Same As The U.K. 1998 Reissue And It Sounds Better Than The 2004 'Deluxe Edition' Remaster!.......2007-06-28
After doing some research I discovered that the U.S. 2002 digitally remastered reissue of ABC's classic 1982 'The Lexicon Of Love' album is the exact same as the U.K. 1998 digitally remastered issue. I own the U.S. release, which has a 1982 and 1998 Mercury Records Ltd. (London) copyright. However, the disc is manufactured by Island Def Jam in New York.
So what does this mean for the fans? Those hoping for a newly remastered 2002 issue won't find it here, yet that doesn't matter because the digital remastering here is simply the best I've heard for this album as a whole. After browsing through my ABC collection and comparing sound quality on a number of the releases I was surprised to hear that this 1998 digital remaster sounds better than any other ABC release, with the exception of the album material on the 2004 'Ultimate Collection' 3-disc set from Universal Netherlands ("All Of My Heart" being the lone exception).
Additionally, the sound quality presented here is MUCH better than the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' of the album. It's a shame I have to say that because the 2004 edition has a bunch more goodies on it. Usually I find more recent remasters sounding better than remasters from the late 90's, but this is simply not the case here. The difference is the result of different mastering engineers. This 1998 release was remastered by Dick Beetham at Tape to Tape. The 2004 'Deluxe Edition' was remastered by Gary Moore. It's a shame Univeral didn't throw the 2004 edition back at Dick again because he did a nearly flawless job.
In my review of the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' I stated how the songs sound flat by today's audio standards. This is simply not the case here. The songs are rich, full, wide, and clean. Listen to those drums at 3:18 in '4 Ever 2 Gether' and it's clear that this one is the winner! Honestly, I had completely forgot how well this album sounded after being stuck on the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' for a few years now.
"All Of My Heart" sounds the best here out of any ABC CD I've heard. I mentioned the harsh sound in the 2004 'Ultimate Collection' review. It sounds rather flat in the 2001/2002 'The Very Best Of' and of course 2004 'Deluxe Edition', but it's just right here! Perfect dynamics, presentation, and range. Moreover, unlike the 'Deluxe Edition', "The Look Of Love (Part IV)" does not annoyingly fade out early and sound cut off. It's presented completely here and in better sound, to top it off!
Usually, I'm not one to go back to late 90's remasters and give solid reviews. This is, of course, one of a few examples in which I can actually praise an earlier remaster over a more recent one. It's a shame that Universal didn't bother reissuing this album as a stand alone disc in 2005 with the other album remasters, perhaps this time including extra bonus tracks beyond the 1 presented here, such as the 12" of "The Look Of Love", which seems to be skipped on several ABC collections.
As for the album itself, read the reviews here. It's a classic! I need not explain any further. This album was originally released on June 25, 1982. Twenty-five years later, it still sounds as striking and fresh as it did when originally released. Do yourself a favor and add this crisp remaster to your collection, if you haven't already.
Gorgeous!!!.......2007-03-03
Here it is: ABC's "The Lexicon Of Love." It's my all-time favorite album. I remember buying this with my allowance in my early teens (during those ancient vinyl years) and falling in love with it. I played it so much, the grooves started to turn a bit white. I always had a weakness for disco, new wave and strings and this album had it all. Trevor Horn is a producer that's so unique and creative. The man inspires me. Then there is, of course, the very talented band. What can I say? They had some serious chops!
This Deluxe Edition is wonderful! The only thing I regret about it is that it doesn't include the 12-inch mix of "The Look Of Love."
Nonetheless, get this cd. It's a true blue classic!
If you judge a book by its cover, then you judge the look by the lover.......2007-02-15
ABC's the Lexicon of Love is the ultimate Valentine's Day album, a pop masterpiece, a thinking (and pretty funny) man's disco party. That man is lead singer Martin Fry -- a silver-tongued devil in a gold lame suit.
What makes the CD so great is the juxtaposition of the glittering sheen of the music with Fry's head-spinningly witty, sarcastic, and self-aware lyrics. "More puns and allusions than Elvis Costello had managed in a career," says Spin Magazine in its Alternative Record Guide, and it's no overstatement.
Here's some of the best quotes on a CD full of em:
1. "If you judge a book by its cover/then you judge the look by the lover."
2. "Look but don't touch in paradise/Don't let them catch you damaging the merchandise."
3. "Everything is temporary, written on that stand/Looking for the girl who meets supply with demand."
4. "I stuck a marriage proposal in the waste disposal."
5. "No I won't be told, there's a crock of gold/at the end of the rainbow. All the pleasure and pain, sunshine and rain/might make this love grow."
6. "Skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers."
7. "I get sales talk from sales assistants/When all I want to do, girl, is lower your resistance."
8. "When she's gone all I've got to learn/is the law of diminishing returns."
9. "The 12 disciples might kiss and tell/But you can tell me much more than they can."
10. "Then I say I love you, foul the situation/Hey, girl, I thought we were the right combination."
Woo-hoo!
At first blush, the thing that stands out is the music, specifically Trevor Horn's impeccable production. Xylophones, glockenspiels, synths, a string section, cash registers, and probably a couple of kitchen sinks, are the order of the day.
The smooth production is probably what got ABC (mistakenly) lumped in with Spandau Ballet and Wang Chung back in the day, which was maybe part of the joke. Fry's bitchy Vegas-singer-with-a-brain shtick points to satire, but it says something about the quality of the writing that these songs also pack an emotional wallop.
The big hits here are the Look of Love and Poison Arrow, great songs both, but for my money the overblown orchestrations on All of My Heart, the happy ca-ching of the cash registers on Date Stamp, the opening fanfare of Show Me, and (of course) the Mr. Roboto intro ("Evil!") on 4 Ever 2 Gether" make these tracks equally deserving of your time.
ABC has never had an album as good as this one, but fans should check out Be Near Me, Between You and Me, Ocean Blue, How to be a Millionaire, and 15-Storey Halo (on the underrated How to be a Zillionaire CD), When Smokey Sings (the band's tribute to Smokey Robinson from the Alphabet City CD), and That Was Then, but This is Now (from the otherwise awful Beauty Stab CD).
If you like this CD, I also recommend the Divine Comedy's "Casanova" and the Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs."
pop bliss.......2007-02-13
pleasing bass lines hop skip and jump all over this disc. drums and synthesizers are cornerstones. the singer has a wonderful voice, full of emotion and emphasis. great songs, too. and great production. pure pop bliss.

Product Description
Learning the alphabet involves not only being able to recite all the letters in order, but also the ability to recognize what the letters look and sound like. This sing-along album invites children to play with the alphabet, discovering objects around them that start with each letter, and developing awareness of the sounds that make up each word. Familiar songs, rhymes and tongue twisters will help your child take important first steps towards literacy while having fun with their favorite Little People® characters.

from a Grammy.......2006-06-23
The music is fine, and I know our musical grandson will enjoy it. However, for a grandmother with "older eyes" it is difficult to read the words in the accompanying pamphlet. ..... Also, I was personally disappointed with the version of "'A' You're Adorable." I was fully anticipating the version with all the letters sung about. In fact, the only reason I bought this CD was for the "full" song!
Adorable and Fun!!.......2006-04-21
This CD is so cute, my daughter loves it and sings the music even when the CD is not on!! Tons of fun for toddlers!! If your child is at all musically inclined, this CD is a must!

The only problem with this collection is that all the best stuff, the choice cuts, pretty much come from their first album, Lexicon of Love, when Martin Fry and friends found the magic mix of words and synthesizers. Verbose, punning, and as overblown as a society wedding cake, there was still something about it that was perfect for the times. "Poison Arrow," and "The Look of Love" put heartbreak to a beat while "Tears Are Not Enough" took it all over the top. After that first album, there were only two songs of note, "How to Be a Millionaire," and "When Smokey Sings," really worthy of inclusion here, which is probably when four of the tracks have been needlessly remixed to fill up the remaining space. --Chris Nickson

Nice mixes.......2006-07-20
This is a nice compilation of ABC's work including their well known tracks as you would expect on a "best of" CD. The remixes of Be Near Me and When Smokey Sings are great party tracks.
Good Overview, since updated.......2005-09-17
While this made a pretty good retrospective when it was first released, the 2002 compilation, "Look of Love," eliminates the superfluous remixes, adds four more songs and is a better remaster. Skip this one and jump up to "Look."
Great career overview.......2005-08-17
"Absolutely ABC" plays it absolutely safe, showcasing the biggest hits for one of the New Romantic movement's biggest bands. The tracks skew heavily towards their most successful releases, "Lexicon..." (five tracks including remixes), "...Zillionaire" (five tracks including remixes), and "Alphabet City" (four tracks including remixes). It would have been nice to include the original demo for "Tears Are Not Enough" to show how quickly the band progressed and it's a bit strange they left out "Where is the Heaven?" from "Up" which was a pretty big club hit. Most ABC releases tend to append remixes so it seems rather strange and pointless to include them here, but that's all minor quibbling. The Munich Disco Mix of "Be Near Me" is the one everyone danced to at clubs so it seems appropriate to add it here. "Absolutely ABC" is a nice thing for completeists or for someone wanting a survey of ABC's greatest hits only, but most of their individual releases are worth buying. Better still is "The Remix Collection" which comprises of extended mixes and remixes covering the same era. It's a bit of a shame this hasn't been repackaged to include later tracks from "Abracadabra" and "Skyscraping" but I'm sure that will happen in time.
An underrated band.......2005-03-15
ABC is one of the more "forgotten" New Wave pop bands of the 80s. Forever in the pop-culture shadow of the likes of Duran Duran, Human League, Simple Minds, and even A Flock of Seagulls. Yet ABC had a sound all their own, a sort of cerebral intelligence to their lyrics to go with the catchy hooks.
The best songs on this compilation are "Poison Arrow", "The Look Of Love", and "All Of My Heart" (all big chart hits). The underappreciated "Tears Are Not Enough" and "Be Near Me" are also solid. Yes, there is some filler on this compilation (senseless remixes for the most part), but overall a good reminder of why ABC was a critical (if not a smashing commercial) success in the 80s.
Be warned, however, that this CD does include the lamentable song "When Smokey Sings". While not a bad listen musically, it definitely marked the point at which ABC's career came to a crashing halt. A New Wave band singing a paen to the Motown sound? Isn't that a bit like a hard-rock band writing about the joys of Disco? Motown is about as far as you can get from what the New Wave movement stood for. No wonder fans bailed in droves at that point!
I LOVE ABC!.......2005-03-09
With a title like that, you would have assumed I would have given this hits package 5 stars. I bought this CD when it first came out back in 1990, and have played it many, many times since then. I was ecstatic that one of my favorite bands of the 80's had put out a greatest hits package. However, I was always disappointed that they had left off "Vanity Kills" in favor of 4 remixed tracks. I eventually got "Vanity Kills" on an 80's compilation CD, so my collection of ABC songs to hit the Billboard Hot 100 was complete. Since this was issued, 2 more ABC hits packages have been issued ("20th Century Masters-The Millenium Collection" and "Look of Love - The Very Best of ABC"). I have not listened to either of these recent hits packages, so I am not in a position to compare them, but I do know that these newer packages do include "Vanity Kills" plus some other tracks. So, if you are a casual ABC fan that only remembers the "big" hits ("The Look of Love", "Poison Arrow", "Be Near Me", "How to Be [A Millionaire]", and "When Smokey Sings") then this CD will suffice. But if you are looking for all of their Hot 100 chart entries, then I suggest checking out one of the other titles available.

Bobby Bland's uptown, brass-and-strings-drenched blues kept him on the charts long after gut-bucket kings such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had dropped from black-radio airwaves. The artistic successes chronicled on this second volume of his greatest hits shouldn't come as a surprise, then, despite the frequent input of ultracommercial producer Steve Barri, who'd crafted AM hits for acts as diverse as the Grass Roots and the post-Motown Four Tops. Even with some accommodations to trends (the disco beat of "The Soul of a Man," chicken-scratching guitars here, there, and everywhere), Bland kept on being Bland, cutting country songs ("Today I Started Loving You Again") and blues standards ("Goin' Down Slow") and investing Dan Penn's "I Hate You" with a unique pungency. This disc performs a valuable service in lifting the veil from an often-overlooked period in the career of one of American music's most important interpretive singers. --Rickey Wright

British Invasion 2.......2006-11-10
When I first heard " Be Near Me " I thought , the boys are back . I know some didn't care for Beauty Stab and was glad this album is more suited for them . But I like Beauty Stab . This album was somewhat alittle too American Pop for me . But overall its still ABC . Besides the song I mention and the title track the others were what you expect . Catchy and danceable . Better than the so call American Pop tunes at the time . I still recommend this album , good and listenable .
I'd like to be..........2006-09-06
A Zillionaire... They are quite fun ABC in this disc, I absolutely like fot music & huomour...
You could do a lot worse.......2005-09-01
If nothing else, "How to Be a....Zillionaire" contains one the finest pop singles of the last three decades - "Be Near Me." Also on this cd edition is a great remix, replete with samples of "that's right!" which harken back to the disco days of yore.
For years I never really listened to the lyrics of "How to Be a Millionaire", another standout track ( and a hit single as well ) and did not catch on that Martin Fry is not asking what one might do to BECOME a millionaire, but rather what one would do after it happens. The lyrics are cynical and cutting, and a perfect indictment of the money and luxury obsessed Eighties. Never a band to stay in one place for too long, ABC seem to have a pattern of following one album with one that is a 180 degree turnabout. This is no exception. Their debut ( procuced by the legendary Trevor Horn ) was full of lush synths and strings. The follow up "Beauty Stab" featured a harder sound, lots of guitars and live instrumentation, and was a commercial and critical failure. This, their third album, was another complete turnaround. The sound is all synths, and slightly sterile and cold sounding. Their look also again changed, and they adopted a Sixties influenced style, which in my opinion singularly kick started the UK Sixties style revival and the following musical boom of acid house and rave. Way ahead of its time, and still quite enjoyable. Some of these songs haven't aged as well as others, and a few of the remixes sound slightly dated. But as a whole, you could buy a lot worse ABC albums. Recommended for fans and the curious alike.
So Hip It Hurts!.......2005-08-17
After the lush sophistication of "Lexicon of Love" (1982) and the misbegotten follow up "Beauty Stab" (1983) ABC were left in a quandary of where to go. Down to the duo of Martin Fry (vocals) and Mark White (guitars) the two elected to go for a fusion of their "Lexicon" era sound with a bit of Motown and Electronic Dance music for a finished product that was pleasing and successful. No doubt smarting from the critical and commercial drubbing they took with "Beauty Stab" "...Zillionaire" was a step in the right direction and would point towards where they would continue with future releases. Produced by Fry and White the band had added David Yarritu and Fiona Russell-Powell who were ostensibly brought on board for reasons unknown and unclear. Neither played any musical instruments or contributed anything other than a few vocals on the track "A to Z." Their presence helped create a strangely cartoonish image of the group that seemed to damage their credibility. Despite these mixed messages "...Zillionaire" succeeded in ways unimaginable.
"Fear of the World" summons up sonic images of "Lexicon" with lush orchestration as ABC proclaims it is going on as fearless as ever amid heavy beats. "Be Near Me" which follows is perhaps their most charming and heartfelt track ever, a simple plaintive plea to a lover over synthesizers and drums; a winning track if there ever was one. "Vanity Kills" seems funny coming from someone perceived to be as vain as Martin Fry, yet he pulls it off with aplomb. Synthesized horns punctuate a very Terry Lewis - Jimmy Jam sounding backing track that sounds straight out of 1980s era Minneapolis. "Ocean Blue" continues in that milieu, a paean to a lover who has left Martin blue that is absolutely stunning in its minimalism and the bridge in the middle where the keyboards, bass, and Martin's falsetto builds to a crescendo is breathtaking; a stunning track. It's an odd segue from there to "15 Story Halo" a bit of syncopated Hi Energy fluff with its heavy synthesized horns. More fluff follows with the aforementioned "A to Z" a bit of rap over a wild backing track; a little harmless camp. Things get back on track with "How to Be a Millionaire" which has some great biting lyrics and great interplay between Martin and the backing vocalists over some very heavy dance beats. A great commentary on 1980s Thatcherite greed and excess; one of my favorite tracks by ABC! The beats keep coming with "Tower of London" a lyrical tour of London punctuated by synthesized horns and a great call and response chorus. More lyrical silliness follows with "So Hip It Hurts" which recounts fashion faux pas past and present. "Between You and Me" closes things out on a sweet intimate note. The release adds four remixes: "Fear of the World (In Cinemascope)" by Julian Mendelsohn (an excellent improvement), "Be Near Me (Munich Mix)" which was the one everyone heard in clubs, "How to be a Millionaire (Bond Street Mix)" another club favorite, and Vanity Kills (Abigail's Party Mix)" another club favorite, all three mixed by Martyn Webster. The remixes are a perfect addition to help round out the release and a huge bonus to have.
"...Zillionaire" pointed the direction ABC would continue, mining sophisticated neo-soul mixed with dance on "Alphabet City," "Up," and "Abracadabra" once pared back down to Fry and White. Fry and White produced "...Zillionaire" and perhaps some outside help may have reshaped the sequencing of the tracks and made a few improvements. Some of the tracks on "...Zillionaire" can be dismissed as fluff or filler but none truly suck and the standout tracks outweigh anything lesser. If you can get past the cartoonish silliness there's some truly great music here.
Call Me crazy..........2005-06-11
..but this is a great album! I have had this CD for many years and remember being a child dancing around to this and their older sigles (on LP, 45 and 12"). I still enjoy the production quality and over all great sound. I think a good addition to this would be to get their greatest hits (Definitley ABC). The remix of Be Near Me is worth the purchase alone. As my partner said upon playing me the greatest hits, "I forgot they did all these fun songs".

Gary, Indiana, brothers the Jackson 5 scored pop and R&B No. 1's with their first four singles for Motown, three of which are collected here. The mythical claim that Diana Ross discovered the Jacksons might have helped gain attention, but their talent clearly spoke for itself. A quartet of writer-producers, including company head Berry Gordy, devised a sound that melded the new funk with smooth soul. "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save" were influenced by Sly and the Family Stone while proving their own new, terrific thing. Both kids and adults embraced it: that 11-year-old Michael was a precocious talent amid a strong group dynamic made the 5 undeniable.
After the quickly assembled debut LP carrying the Ross credit, their identity as an album act was solidified by 1970's ABC, which found them thoroughly convincing on everything from school-days riffs like the title tune to a cover of Funkadelic's "I'll Bet You." The idea of a group "growing" from disc to disc may be clichéd, but this CD shows it was both literally and figuratively true in the Jackson 5's case. The rare outtake "Oh, I've Been Bless'd" is included as a bonus track. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16
Below you will find a lengthy analysis of the opening song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.
This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.
The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.
(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (If this selection does not feature sound clips, look at other Jackson 5 records here on Amazon to hear the mentioned snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?
Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.
One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.
I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.
Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?

A Triumphant Debut for one of THE BEST groups in music history!!.......2005-10-19
I'm only 22 years old and i am a big fan of the Jacksons history. When I bought this album,it showed me exactly what was to come out of this group years later down the road. The first song Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Da is the perfect 2 start off a debut album. The next 3 tracks,"Nobody","Can You Remember?",and their classic single "I Want You Back" (which in my opinion would be the only J5 song 2 sound good without any drums playing in the background). A standout track on the first album is "Born To Love You" where Michael and Marlon do their own vocal-trade off. Considering I like 2 sing all of Marlon Jacksons' parts on their songs. The follow-up album was also pretty good, but the lack of hit material after the song "2-4-6-8" is why this review is only 4 stars, but HEY!! it's still a good CD 2 own in your collection.
Exuberant Music.......2004-12-17
The J5 debut and sophomore discs on Motown are collected here and, interestingly enough, the two albums sound remarkably different. The first, "Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5" is rooted in the older Motown sound, produced largely by Bobby Taylor and including several covers (in fact, nearly all the songs were covers). For the most part, these covers are made very unique, but aren't really exciting or fresh. The exception to this rule is their smoking, bluesy soul on "Who's Loving You." This was the b-side to the only single on the album, the #1 smash "I Want You Back," regarded by many critics as perhaps the most perfect pop song ever released. Aside from these two tracks, the album shifts between decent pleasantries and ho-hum covers. If released in 1966, this album would have been much better suited than it was in 1969. When the first shouts of "The Love You Save" come through the speakers, it's clear that the "ABC" half of this disc is going to be very different. At times spunky, gorgeous, and precocious, "ABC" is one kiddie album that shouldn't be overlooked. In one recent poll of critics and musicians alike, it ranked among the top 100 albums. Containing two more #1 hits, this was a successful record and the basis for what woule become the Jackson 5's signature sound for years, until songs like "Get It Together" and "Dancing Machine" helped propel them towards the funk/dance arena.
CLASSIC CHILDHOOD FAVORITE...STILL SOUNDS FRESH (ABC that is.......2004-03-19
I am 40 years old and still listening to this album. I still can't get over how absolutley fabulous these songs are. 2-4-6-8 has a hook that I can't get out of my head. Don't Know Why I Love You is classic J-5. Michael wails on this one, nice cover of a Stevie Wonder song. Of course..ABC and The Love You Save are the instant classics on this album..but howabout "I'll Bet You" and "The Young Folks"..The Young Folks is a cover of a Supremes song, but the J5's version demolishes it. My all time fave though is "One More Chance".. I think I have played this song over a thousand times. What a great ballad. Nice melody and vocal performance. This would have gotten 5 stars, bought I still am not fond of "True Love Can Be Beautiful" and "Never HAd a Dream Come True". Their next great lp was "Maybe Tomorrow".
Strong debuts of the J-5.......2002-08-03
Not counting the Steeltown records, these albums were the debuts of the J/5. Couldn't have started on a better note! Much has been said about the original tunes, but the J/5 were brilliant at covering tunes and making them their own. These versions of "Can You Remember," "Stand," "Born to Love You," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Oh How Happy," "La la Means I love You," "Come Round Here," "Who's Lovin' You," etc. usually outclass the original versions. This two-cd set lives up to the cliche' ALL KILLER NO FILLER!

Rockin' Oldies.......2005-02-04
WOW!!! This album is great. If you ever sang along to some of the music themes to Monday Night Football this album is for you. It is filled with quite a few older songs and not many sports themed songs. I enjoy it but I can see how some people might not enjoy the selections. Make sure you check the song titles before you buy.
