5 out of 5 stars Can you feel it? Definitely.......2007-03-21

These days, I've been rediscovering the music of one of my all-time favorite groups, the Jackson 5/The Jacksons. I remember loving these guys SOOOO much and doing the craziest things to try to meet them - ever see that old footage of fans going nuts over them back in the day? Well, that might as well had been me and my girlfriends. I actually chased a limousine down a Manhattan street with a bunch of other screaming, hysterical girls after one of their concerts in 1980, because the guys were leaving the show in it! My kids laugh whenever I tell them that story, but it is a testament just as to HOW big these guys were back then! Michael had OFF THE WALL out the previous year with all those huge hits, and all the publicity from DESTINY was dying down when this album came out.

TRIUMPH, from 1980, is an incredibly solid offering from the Jacksons - the second of their albums where they had full creative control. Taking the best elements from DESTINY and combining them with the best from Michael's OFF THE WALL, this was the result! Yielding four hit singles, TRIUMPH was appropriately named as such because of a near-fatal car accident that youngest brother Randy had, and the degree of his injuries were so extreme that doctors were saying that he would never walk again. Well, as we see, through Randy's determination, he beat those odds and that entire harrowing experience turned out to be an inspirational theme for the group's next album.

Every song on here is tight, no filler at all. Two of the nine tunes are ballads - all the others are driving dance cuts. From beginning to end, it's guaranteed to have you hooked from the pulsating opening song, "Can You Feel It", with Michael and Randy on lead - a little preachy, but it's catchy and makes you want to sing along - to Jackie's "Wondering Who". Jackie is an underrated vocalist and songwriter, so no one should have slept on him! (He co-wrote many of the songs on this.) "Lovely One", the follow-up to the enormously successful "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" was the JAM when I was in high school, and you heard it EVERYWHERE. There is an explosive energy that the brothers are giving off here, and Michael's vocals are ON FIRE! "Your Ways", a haunting but funky tune also written by Jackie, has Mike using his even higher falsetto a lot. "Everybody" sounds like "Get On The Floor" from Michael's OFF THE WALL, but it's good (written by Tito and Michael).

"Heartbreak Hotel", entitled "This Place Hotel" on the CD issue (never knew why the title was altered - you wouldn't confuse it with that Elvis song, not anymore than you would with the Whitney Houston song of the same name) and written by Michael, is definitely a highlight. "Time Waits For No One" is one of the two ballads here and it is gorgeous - think of the gossamer beauty of "She's Out Of My Life" where the subject of taking the one you love for granted comes into play. "Walk Right Now", the tale of a persistent ex-girlfriend, is hot and a definite booty-shaker. "Give It Up", the other ballad here, is an easy, swaying pop groove featuring Michael and Marlon trading off leads and ends with a drumline-like beat. The afore-mentioned "Wondering Who" is disco-funk, an uptempo tune that should have been a single as well. Very addictive!

TRIUMPH was truly a family affair - this is how good it was for the Jacksons as an act, before the phenomenon called THRILLER came along. All of the brothers had their input on this project, and it's obvious that they had a ball in the studio recording it. The energy that Mike puts down seriously rivals any of the stuff he would do on his own. You'll have a ball listening to it, too. This is perfection...the best Jacksons album, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jacksons album..................2007-02-09

Mike continues to dominate. The rest of the Jackson brothers backup Mike successfully. Their songwriting is excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Jacksons album in my view..........2006-08-29

Of all the albums the Jacksons released after they departed from Motown, this is probably their best work (with Destiny a VERY close second). A masterpiece, this album will definitely take you back to the days of REAL music by REAL, talented musicians. All of the tracks are great, but the ones that stand out the most are "Can You Feel It," "Lovely One," "Everybody," "Heartbreak Hotel," (one the best songs ever made in my opinion) "Time Waits For No One," and "Walk Right Now." If you are an MJ fan, or a Jackson 5 fan, or just a fan of original, REAL music, by real, talented musicians and songwriters, this is an album you should definitely invest in. I purchased this months ago and it still gets daily play from me.

5 out of 5 stars See? Everyone Gives it Five Stars!.......2006-07-28

This is truly a great CD. There are so many good songs on this and everyone gets a chance to shine. You don't even miss Jermaine! I especially like "Lovely One", "Your Ways", "Walk Right Now" "Can You Feel It" and "Heartbreak Hotel". Everyone does a great job and you can tell they enjoyed making this one. I highly recommend it, for all you people who loved the J5. It's fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars The Triumphant return of the JACKSONS!!!.......2006-05-03

If you want to hear ALL of Papa Joe Jackson's sons,(post-motown years), at their very best, -buy this CD.
-I dare say, that this album woke alot fans up, for a brief moment, and reminded them that there were 4 other brothers that had talent too, -besides Michael. This album is the Jackson's own personal "Off the Wall" and "Thriller".
-It doesin't get any better than this.
-Without warning, the music demands your attention from beginning to end, with its gossiple like feel of "Can You Feel It".
-While "Lovely Ones" bump'in rhythms are nothing short of perfection,-In addition, Lovely One's ending has so much energy, that you do not want the Jacksons to stop singing!
For me, this is the high point of the entire CD!!!
-"Everybody" is a smooth dance track on which Michael Jackson seems to glide through the melody effortlessly like a figure skater at the olympics!!
-"Heart Break Hotel", (I never liked the title, "This place hotel"), tour-guides you through the mind of a paranoid cheater. Its creepy bass line and melody makes you want to lock your doors and close your windows!!
-"Time waits for no one", this ballad cries unbearable heartbreak, which compells you to call the suicide hot-line on Michael!!!
- "Walk right now", a fresh dance groove that stays with you long after the song is over.
"Your ways" and "Give it up" are original and inventive too.
Discover for yourself this amazing album, while you make note that the Jackson brothers were once a respectable musical family.

I was very glad that I purchased this unique material because I had it when I was young and I lost it. I was happy when I found it on Amazon.com! This CD is a must have for everyone who likes MJ and the live version of the songs is even better than the original cd version!

5 out of 5 stars Get down and get funky with the Jacksons!.......2006-02-15

Thousands of fans spent one or more special evenings in the company of Michael,Jermaine,Marlon,Jackie and Tito Jackson. The brothers were promoting their TRIUMPH album and Michael was promoting his solo megahit OFF THE WALL. Listeners, present or not at these performances, can get down and get funky to songs like CAN YOU FEEL IT and THIS PLACE HOTEL from TRIUMPH and ROCK WITH YOU,WORKING DAY AND NIGHT and the title track from OTW. Michael had just risen to fame as a solo performer although he had a few solo hits prior to OFW. Jermaine was enjoying success as a solo performer also. Get down and funky also to SHAKE YOUR BODY DOWN TO THE GROUND from 1978's DESTINY. There's also a few Jackson 5 hits such as I'LL BE THERE. BEN,Michael's inaugural solo hit, would be recycled for the 2003 compilation,NUMBER ONES. If you heard and loved the Bee Gees' ONE NIGHT ONLY,you'll love this album! So play this one and SHAKE YOUR BODY DOWN TO THE GROUND!

4 out of 5 stars Shake Your Body!!!.......2005-10-19

I wish I could see this whole concert on dvd or tv or something, because by the way it sounds on cd,it sounded like it turned out really good. The opening intro to Can You Feel It is a great way for the brothers to come out and sing. All of the "fast" songs are....well....fast paced as I noticed that the beat to Can You Feel It sounds almost like a church song ('scuse me Lord). While the songs,"Things I Do For You" and "Off The Wall" go hand-in-hand pretty good together on this album,it's a suprise to me that Michael slips a little on his performance of "Ben",i think they should've put either "Push Me Away" or the remixed version of "Blame It On The Boogie" (which is a really really good remix by the way). "Heartbreak Hotel" is also on here but it doesn't sound as good as it does on the Triumph album or the later live version that Michael did on the 1987 Bad Tour - but oh well. The funniest moment on this album is when Michael sings "She's Out Of My Life" and you can hear the ladies just lose their minds and slide right out of their panties when he gets closer to the edge of the stage and cries. Whether it was staged or not,Michael Jackson knows how to entertain his fans anyway he can. Then they go into a brief argument about the old days and interact with crowd as well. I was suprised to even hear Tito Jackson do an outburst cause he seems so quiet. After the brothers bicker with Michael, they finally break into the infamous J5 Medley of "I Want You Back","ABC","The Love You Save",and "I'll Be There". But in this medley (which you get to hear for the first time) Michael and Marlon do the vocal trade just like Michael and Jermaine use to do in the early years. Marlon Jackson does a good job of not trying to sound like Jermaine in the medley and pretty much holds his own on it. After "I'll Be There" comes the best version of "Rock With You" I've ever heard. Thanks to the extended ending on the song where Tito,Marlon,Jackie, and Randy follow Michael's ever-changing lead in the ending until he decides to hold a note for a little bit then runs behind his microphone stand to breakout another good follow-up song to "Rock With You" - the infectious "Lovely One". This is absolutely THE BEST done over single on the Live album. The album - to my suprise - begins to slack up when the brothers do "Working Day and Night" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough",I'm not sure why but it just didn't sound fitting, but hey feel free to disagree with me. Finally,we reach the end of the album as the brothers close the show out with "Shake Your Body Down To The Ground",and then it's time to say goodbye to all their company. T-H-E J-A-C-K-S-O-N-S,GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Offering From The Jacksons: 4½ Stars.......2006-08-02

In 1978, The Jacksons released their third album, Destiny, on the label Epic. The record sales for the two former records, The Jacksons and Goin' Places, had been disappointing yet the album Destiny changed the general perception that The Jacksons couldn't land a hit album. The brothers wrote most of the material together except for the song Blame It On The Boogie, I believe. Michael Jackson's solo career was non-existent at the time, however Destiny and the 1980-release Triumph have footprints of Michael Jackson's influence, which can also be heard on his solo efforts: Off The Wall and Thriller.

Lifted as the first single, Blame It On The Boogie established the return of The Jacksons to the top of the charts, landing the group a top 10 hit. The 1970s vibe shines through the song from the funky beat to the seductive lure of the dance. Undoubtedly, a refreshing track which still manages to have people going nuts on the dancefloor. Up next is the lovely Push Me Away, demonstrating The Jacksons' ability to create dreamy ballads. It may not be the most memorable track on Destiny, nevertheless it displays the vulnerability in Michael Jackson's voice. The bass-heavy Things I Do For You , a dance track with massive power and energy, is a stomping, funky offering, showcasing The Jacksons' talent to write brilliant up-tempo songs, which is also evident on the Triumph album. The third single Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) managed to score The Jacksons a top five hit. The full-out, disco-inspired cut is slowly built up until it finally explodes in a mix of guitar, bass and horn arrangements. Used as a sample numerous times since its release, it is no wonder that Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) is considered a Jacksons classic.

The title track Destiny opens with a raw guitar sound, stating the mood for the rest of the song. Overall, the morality of the song is that city life and material goods will not ensure you happiness, instead the simple life is to be preferred. Bless His Soul tends to follow the same pattern as Destiny - the desire to ensure one's happiness. The character of the song wants control of his own life, however he is constantly pressured to satisfy other people rather than listening to his own needs. Perhaps an autobiographical story for Michael Jackson? Returning to the main theme of dance obsession, All Night Dancer bubbles of energy. Michael Jackson's ''hey hey hey'' ad-libing during the break is refreshing and simply encourages you to get on the floor, dancing your cares away. Still, the song doesn't have the same potential as Blame It On The Boogie, Things I Do For You and Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground), but it is still a strong record. The remaining song That's What You Get (For Being Polite) tells the story of Jack, a confused guy, who tries to do his best - yet he is uncertain of how to live his life.

Destiny was the first Jacksons album which marked their true ability to work together as a group. Destiny and Triumph are extremely good records; however they are highly underrated. Some might disagree but the two Jacksons albums are actually better than several Michael Jackson solo-offerings. If you are unfamiliar with The Jacksons, Destiny is an excellent choice to raise your awareness of this brilliant group. Their music is often overshadowed by Michael Jackson's solo career, however it shouldn't be forgotten that The Jacksons have also released superb material.

Overall Rating: 9.5/10

4 out of 5 stars A destiny not yet realized..........2006-05-04

-Meanwhile,in The Jackson's recording studio, -"creative freedom" had been given to one of the hottest musical/dance acts in history. There must have been a lot of pressure on this group from Epic and Papa Joe Jackson to come up with something big!!!
Did The Jacksons deliver?!!
You bet they did!!!
They created two of the funkiest dance grooves to be heard over the airwaves in the 70's. The songs I am speaking of, (as if you don't know), are: -"Shake your body down (to the groung)" and "Blame it on the boogie"!!
-You are literally whisked away in the high energy beat of the music.
On "Push me away"-this features Michael's uncanny ability to sing a love ballad so beautifully that it would make a 350lb male body builder want to weep.
-"The things I do for you", is another danceable high energy track with some great moments on it as welll.
"Destiny", I do believe that this is there most creative and meaningful piece of work on the entire record.
-The guitar solo at the end of this track is outstanding!!-TITO, -you go BOY!!!
While the easyily forgettable tracks of "Thats what you get (for being polite)" and the exhausting "All night dancing" could leave the average fan thinking,
-"WHAT THA' HECK"?!
-(I say, there was too much creative control here)!!
-Please skip these two songs for your own good!!!
Overall, I was not surprised that the Jacksons were able to create such memorable dance grooves. However, these songs can not compare to there future upcomming album, "Triumph". I believe that "Triumph" was the Jacksons true destiny. "Destiny", creatively speaking, is a great piece of work but one can't help but wonder, while listening to the music, what lie ahead for this enormously talented band of brothers.
-People, I give you -"TRIUMPH"!!!!

5 out of 5 stars DESTINY!.......2006-01-28

This is a great album! Some songs really make you wanna dance (just about all songs). It's easy to like and even love, maybe because of the energy in this quallity music.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Blame It On The Boogie.......2006-01-07

This right here sounds more like me. It makes me wanna dance around. Some of the songs that are on this shows Michael's talent how he does some of the words in the songs. I love "Blame It On The Boogie" it is one of my favorite olds song. It is kind disco kind of going to an area of dance, dance music. All the songs are so hot like oh my god. But this really shows that Michael is going to the one to make it and not his other brothers, so the king is comin' get away Jackie, Tito,Jermaine, THE KING IS COMIN'.

4 out of 5 stars VICTORY IS STILL TIGHT 23 YRS LATER.......2007-06-24

The Jacksons Victory Album has always been recieved as a lackluster effort from the brothers. It's not the case. Victory is a unique album that didn't focus on the r&b sound that was going around in 1984. It mixes in the sounds of rock, pop and alternative to give each song a different groove. The three singles released from Victory were the power rock sounding of State of Shock which hit #3 on the charts. Torture was the next single released. The video only featured Marlon, Tito, Jackie and Randy. Jermaine and Mike decided at the first day of shooting that they wouldn't take part of the video. The video still delivers with the help of Paula Abdul's direction. The song peaked at #17. The last single released was Body, featuring lead vocals by Marlon. Body is great b/c it's a dance groove. The video shows the Jacksons minus Mike and Jermaine again, holding auditions for women to be dancers in the video. Although the song only reached #47 on the charts, it's still a classic. Jackie's lead song Wait should've been released as a single. Jackie does a great job with the vocals and Mike sounds good as hell towards the end helping out on backing vocals. Victory is probably the Jacksons 3rd best album, behind Triumph and Destiny, but it's still a great album!

3 out of 5 stars For those who don't know..........2007-03-17

...the final Jacksons album was 2300 JACKSON STREET (1989), NOT VICTORY. It featured Janet, Rebbie and Jermaine Jackson along with their brothers and was being promoted as a family reunion-type album, but this was not the case. Except for one song, 2300 was recorded without the participation of both Michael and Marlon, who were disenchanted with all the drama surrounding the 1984 Victory Tour. 1984 seemed to be the beginning of the end for them. All these things happened that year:

*Michael's accident with his hair catching on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial with his brothers that January;

*The recording of the VICTORY album which even long-time Jackson fans thought was inferior to their earlier works;

*High ticket prices for the promotional tour (courtesy of Don King, who was the promoter) and as a result, the Jacksons were accused of being greedy;

*Reports of violent arguments amongst the brothers;

*And finally, Michael announced onstage during the very last concert on that tour in Los Angeles that he was leaving the group, and later vowed he would never work with his brothers again. A couple of years afterward, Marlon exited as well, having tired of the many disagreements in the group.

When 2300 JACKSON STREET came along in 1989, it didn't sell very well, but not because it was terrible - in fact, it was decent. The solo careers of Michael and Janet were so phenomenal at the time, they simply overshadowed anything else the other family members were trying to do musically. This CD featured the remaining Jacksons going into New Jack Swing territory. Except for the title song, which all the Jacksons (save for LaToya) sang on and New Jack Swing king Teddy Riley had a hand in, and "Nothin' That Compares 2 U" (an L.A. & Babyface offering), it's pretty much forgettable. In 1990, after 27 years as a group, the Jacksons officially disbanded.

On the subject of VICTORY (1984), it is probably the next-to-the-weakest album in the Jacksons catalog, but it still has some tracks worth hearing, so don't dismiss it altogether. Jermaine rejoins his brothers here for the first time since 1975, so there is some historic relevance to this album, plus the talents of the other brothers are finally showcased. Michael, by choice, had limited his involvement. Obviously he had other things on his mind (like the groundbreaking success of his THRILLER album and being on the fast track to becoming the biggest star in the world), so collaborating with his brothers again wasn't exactly what he wanted - and it shows.

The best cuts are "Torture", one of the three hit singles from VICTORY, written by Jackie and featuring Michael and Jermaine; "Wait", another uptempo song written by Jackie where he also has the lead; Randy's easy solo on the ballad "One More Chance", and Marlon out in front on the funky dance number, "Body", which is my favorite song on this album. Okay, so it does sound like "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", but it's just as appealing. "State of Shock", the funk/rock duet between Mike and Mick Jagger, is just alright, nothing groundbreaking but listenable. It doesn't sound like it even belongs on this album, nor on ANY Jacksons album at all! I agree with another reviewer - it was probably something Michael was working on independently with Jagger and as a "favor" to his brothers, he decided to let them have the song and call it a Jacksons release to help boost the album sales. That way he couldn't be accused of being selfish and not being down for the family cause. As for everything else on VICTORY, there are no gray areas - you either love it or hate it, pure and simple. If you love the Jacksons, odds are that you have all their other releases and this is one you'll want to add to your collection. But if you're a casual fan, you might want to pass this by and settle for THE ESSENTIAL JACKSONS instead.

3 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars: Ironically, their worst album came when Thriller ruled the world......................2007-02-09

I'm not sure if the label picked which songs could be on the album or what. Maybe the chemistry was off or we judged this album by Thriller's standards. Either way, it's not that good. Tito's solo joint is the worst.

4 out of 5 stars The Jackson's Victory Album Review.......2006-08-08

The Jacksons 'Victory' album is a collection of songs for true Jackson fans. With titles for every walk of life, this album is not just for Saturday mournings.

5 out of 5 stars This IS good.......2006-01-28

Though everybody seem to dislike this album i think it's great! Torture is a strong and sharp song with a sort of "rock-feelin" over it. Another really good song is State of shock with Michael and Mick Jagger. Also a "rock-feelin" over this one. There is no song on tis album that I can say that i don't like. But when Michael's not singin the songs becomes a bit empty. That is the proof of his greatness as an entertainer.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Jacksons classics........2007-05-08

These songs really take me back in time when i was a very young man. I remember owning the Destiny album when it first hit the scene in 1978. And that lp was slammin'. These songs are right on point and i love every last one of them. This is a very fine collaboration from a legendary group.

1 out of 5 stars No Point!!.......2006-01-02

I don't care if this was the first Epic Records Jacksons compilation, it sucks and I'm sure glad I didn't buy it. The only execption is the extra ten seconds added on Enjoy Yourself. Different Kind Of Lady, Torture and Body (both minor pop hits) were missing but big deal, some of thier greatest B Sides were absent such as Blues Away, Push Me Away and Things I Do For You were worth being placed on the cd. All of their biggest hits on the Essentials are in their full lp versions which was ok (although I liked Can You Feel It's edited version from the video better). The live version of Don't Stop (not a Jacksons' song, MJ) was chopped up from the original 1981 recording. All of the Jacksons' original lps are still available on cd, but the boring Babyface produced 2300 Jackson St.(unless you can luck out on eBay). Just purchase all the original cds still in print, but the horrible Victory unless you are a real hardcore Michael Jackson fan. Its more bucks, but you will get all of the classics that were absent from the compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Essential But Not.......2005-09-14

The Jacksons are my favorite group - hands down. I admit, every track on here is essential to their charting singles. But these guys have plenty of other astonishing tracks that didn't hit the radio. One thing I must admit regarding this disc is that it is great that we finally get the full 8 minute version of the powerful "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)". Usually only the DESTINY album features it, while the hits compilations features the short 3 to 4 minute version.
All else aside, this disc is worth purchasing if you just want what made the charts, but if you want really great and timeless music, purchase all 5 or 6 of The Jacksons' discs and you're in for a musical gift.

if you're a Jackson fan...get it, but the Philly sound for this group wasn't that great

5 out of 5 stars The Jacksons do the sound of Philly.......2006-12-08

There was a time, many, many years ago, long before he became known as the king of pop, when Michael Jackson was simply regarded as an incredibly gifted soul singer. He and his brothers had had several years of international success (and a bucket load of number one singles) as the Jackson 5 but as the boys grew older, they hankered for more control over their music and their destinies. Reportedly, Berry Gordy wasn't so keen on letting them have it.

So they quit Motown - sadly, Jermaine couldn't join them as he'd gone and married the boss's daughter - and with youngest brother Randy, joined CBS and changed their name to The Jacksons. CBS brought in super-producers Gamble & Huff, McFadden & Whitehead and Dexter Wansel. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff had founded Philadelphia Records in 1971 as direct competition for Berry Gordy's Motown and in fact, had enjoyed huge success with their 'Philadelphia Soul' sound with acts like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The O'Jays and BillyPaul. Wansel at the time was relatively new but he made his mark on this album and also worked on the Jacksons' follow-up, "Goin' Places".

This album is the end result and it spawned the hits "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You The Way To Go" - a tune that still gets played on my local radio station to this very day. The producers wrote all the songs, except for the beautiful mid-tempo Blues Away, which was penned my Michael Jackson himself. Other Jackson brothers shared in the lead vocals but it's always Michael's voice that rings clear and true. He and his brothers sound like they're having a really good time doing what they do. Songs like "Think Happy", "Good Times", "Living Together" and "Dreamer" are simply joyful to listen to.

This is one of the best soul records of that era and people who use albums like "Thriller" or/and anything that came after it to assess Michael's prowess as a singer have no idea. Personally, I believe it was on "Off The Wall" that he last did soul. He was one of the best soul singers of our generation and if you need proof, you need look no further than this gem. Still worth a gander after 30 years.

PS. And if you do like this, may I suggest you check out the box set, "The Philly Sound 1966 -1976: Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff". It's not cheap but it's worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars A New Begining For The Jacksons...Needs To Be Remastered!!!.......2006-07-21

As everyone already knows, 'The Jacksons' (1976) was the begining of a new era for Michael & his Brothers (With Randy & minus Jermaine!). This debut on the legendary Philadelphia International Label was very interesting because Gamble & Huff were the KINGS of the then fledging Phily Sound (incl. acts like The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Blue Notes, The Three Degrees, Billy Paul, and a host of other acts).

'The Jacksons' was a moderate success, spawning 2 well known hits ('Enjoy Yourself' & 'Show You The Way To Go'), and it was a nice start for the Jacksons in 1976 after leaving Motown. The Brothers would end up recording one more album in 1977 under Gamble & Huff's direction ('Goin' Places'), and it didn't do as well as expected, but the album had some nice moments ('Different Kind Of Lady' & 'Find Me A Girl' for example!).

As I listened to the 1st 2 albums by The Jacksons, it became apparent that they sound better when playing them back to back, and that the sound quality REALLY needed to be improved. For some reason Epic/Sony won't remaster the original CDs, so I cleaned them up for a fanstatsic 2 on 1 collection featuring BOTH 'The Jacksons' (1976) & 'Goin Places' (1977) on a single CD! Fans can do the same if they have decent remastering software (Magix for example), and the sound is incredible. Come on Sony, remaster & release the 1st 2 Jacksons albums on a single CD..it makes all the sense in the world!
Peace, SD
(of 'Chaka's World')

4 out of 5 stars Let Mike & the Jackson brothers show you where to go...................2006-06-25

I'm very fond of this album due to fact that it's my earliest recollection of music. My family was big J5/Jacksons fans in the 70's. After 30 years, this album still hits. The Gamble and Huff produced "Let me show you the way to go" is the best reason to buy this album. Mike kills the song from beginning to end. Other stand outs are Enjoy Yourself, Blues Away, Dreamer and Good Times.

Good on Elvis for risking the ridicule of a blinkered pop world with this unprecedented (for him, certainly, and most anyone short of Kurt Weill) and quite lovely album of bitchy, wise, and funny art songs accompanied by strings. His freshest, most evolved work in years. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars The definition of Musical Genius.......2007-05-22

If/when this ever is reprinted you MUST purchase it. It is beautiful in ways that I can't describe. For a writer/musician who is known for writing some amazing pieces, this is his pinnacle.

You will sob. You will laugh. You will rage. You will be haunted.

From a purely musical perspective, when you listen to this CD you are in the presence of great genius.

Listen to it alone, at least at first. Listen in the dark and let the imagery flow over you like fog.

4 out of 5 stars Epistolary reflections on Costellian themes..........2006-01-16

Elvis Costello (Declan MacManus) has done his fair share of collaborations in the past decade. From the Grammy-award winning project with Burt Bacharach in 1998 to 2001's subdued "For the Stars" with Anne-Sophie von Otter Costello has branched out from his rock roots in diverse directions. "The Juliet Letters" from 1993 was the first in a long line of such collaborations. Costello and the Brodsky Quartet were brought together by mutual appreciation (Costello went to Brodsky Quartet concerts while the Brodsky Quartet attended Costello concerts). And Costello's now ex-wife Cait O'Riordan provided the epistolary theme for the project. She spotted a newspaper article about a professor that responded to letters addressed to "Juliet Capulet". Costello then presented the article to the quartet for inspiration. The group of five ended up writing all of the music and words (though much of the music is credited to "MacManus"). The results fall somewhere between classical song cycles and Beatle-inspired "string rock" (a la "Yesterday" and "Eleanor Rigby"). Feelings of melancholy and anger pervade most of the songs. The strings punctuate these feelings perfectly. Fans of Costello's rock music probably won't find much to appreciate here. But the album contains many of the same classic Costello themes and vocal styles utilized in his rock.

Like a Richardson novel, letters provide the basis for the project. Failed and frustrated relationships abound. "Thank you for the flowers / I threw them on the fire / And I burned the photographs that you had enclosed / GOD they were ugly children" Costello sings venemously on the driving "I Almost Had a Weakness". After all, nothing seeps loneliness more than an unanswered love letter. But more than love gets the treatment here. Other songs include a suicide note ("Dear Sweet Filthy World"), a letter from a soldier to a stranger ("I Thought I'd Write to Juliet"), a bizarre experiment in selective exhumation ("Damnation's Cellar"), a reflection on separation ("Why?"), and a letter full of hope in the face of despair ("The Birds Will Still Be Singing"). Many songs explore the sad one-sided nature of letter writing. And no song responds to any other song. This fills the songs that deal with ineffable questions with an almost desparing isolation. But not everything is doom and gloom. "This Offer is Unrepeatable" picks up the mood with a humorously exaggerated letter from a scam artist (and it more than a little resembles the Tom Waits' classic "Step Right Up"). The final song injects some hope into the stark themes in the manner of "Old Man River": "Banish all dismay / Extinguish every sorrow / If I'm lost or I'm forgiven / The birds will still be singing". So in the end, things aren't as bad as they seem. The world goes on regardless of our ephemeral concerns. And as long as the world goes on hope exists.

This CD contains a lot of very beautiful and moving music. Two violins, a viola, a violincello, and voice provide all of the instrumentation. Costello branched out into something very different here. And not all of his fans appreciated it. Regardless, in retrospect "The Juliet Letters" pointed to the future. This year Costello will tour orchestra halls. Not only that, he also wrote a full orchestral score ("Il Sogno"). Strings appear more frequently in his recent music. And year by year he seems to embrace "classical" music more intensely. Still, he hasn't abandoned rock and pop (as "When I Was Cruel" and "The Delivery Man" testify). Though this early collaboration remains somewhat underappreciated, it nonetheless fully showcases Elvis Costello's diverse, adaptable, and broad musical scope. Costello will doubtless appear somewhere on the list of accomplished twentieth and twenty-first century musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty? Truth? You Can't Handle Either!!.......2006-01-06

The reason the Costello/Brodsky collaboration "Juliet Letters" is such a difficult listen is also why its the MOST SINGULARLY BRILLIANT ALBUM IN THE ENTIRE ELVIS COSTELLO DISCOGRAPHY! And this declaration is coming from a man who could write a thesis on "Armed Forces" and "Imperial Bedroom" in his sleep! The idea of setting "letters" to music has certainly been done before, but Costello sticks his neck out, both as a composer and singer in ways he'd never done before. Accompanying yourself with just a string quartet (no snarling guitars or euphonious keyboard filigrees,) is the surest way to test your mettle as a vocalist. And sure, sometimes Costello's voice isn't exactly the strongest, but like say, Billie Holliday it always seems to occur precisely when the lyric calls for it: check out "Who Do You Think You Are?" or "The Birds Will Still Be Singing" and you'll hear exactly what I mean. Even his ode to a chain letter, "This Offer Is Unrepeatable" serves up a cheeky bit of satire worthy of "Three Penny Opera." Of course, you can only experience this album sporadically - could anyone watch "Death Of A Saleman" or "Long Day's Journey Into Night" repeatedly without losing one's mind? Emotionally-wrought exercises like "Letters" take a lot out of you, even when you're merely the observer (or listener,) rather than the participant. But that's what makes the journey, however bittersweet, one worth taking.

5 out of 5 stars Deep and moving music from Elvis Costello........2005-06-18

The Juliet Letters is a moving colaboration from Elvis Costello and the Brodsky String Quartet. His deep vocals are complemented by the string quartet. This album is
neither fish nor fowl (classical or pop) it's just a musical
exercise. The strings are some of my favorite compositions,
(viola, cello and violin). Elvis Costello not only got the Brodsky Quartet a bigger audience but he inspired them to
write their own music (a third of the songs are composed by the Quartet).

While it might not be everyones cup of tea, the music is brilliant and Elvis reaches octave levels I thought I would never imagine he could ever attain. Maybe sometime in the near future he'll work with them again. I applaud him for taking such a bold step in making a non-commercial album.

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Give it a Try.......2004-03-03

I've been listening to a lot of Philip Glass and Steve Reich lately, and its caused me to go back to this album to give it another go.Previously I thought that it was an interesting experiment which hadn't worked out very well. Now I think that it is a good album for rockers and classical music lovers to use to stretch their ears a little. So called crossover albums are usually horrifying-does anyone else remember that album that Procol Harum did with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra? Elvis flatly denounces the concept in the liner notes. And not everything on this album works. It isn't the brilliant work that some of the other reviewers seem to think that it is.But it is a worthwhile experiment and a work that should be given a fair chance.Rockers and classical music lovers tend to be snobbish and dismissive of one another. This is a good work for them to live with for a while. When Elvis and the Brodsky's click-on "Jackson Monk and Rowe" or "Romeos Seance"-the results are as beautiful and valid as anything either of them have ever done.
Three stars because some of this simply doesn't work. But this is a work anyone who likes Elvis or the Brodsky's should have in their collection.

Product Description

With the release of this collection, the Jackson 5 album catalog on CD is finally complete. Two hard-to-find albums return, with a bonus track to boot! After the J5s explosive success at Motown, the group left to join Epic Records in 1975. When their new label debuted The Jacksons, Motown did what any smart label would: issue tracks from the vaults. Joyful Jukebox Music came out in 1976. The bulk of Joyfuls tracks were cut in 1972-1973, around the Skywriter and Get It Together sessions. In 1979, the Jacksons jumped back into the Top 10 with Destiny, just as Michael was beginning his ascent to solo super-stardom with Off TheWall. Motown again dipped into its archive and issued Boogie on its Natural Resources label. J5 fans were ecstatic - the seven unreleased tracks werent throwaways, but great finds. It was only out in the market for a very brief window before being withdrawn. This disc closes with a previously unheard, uncut version of Hum Along And Dance. Originally an 8:36 album track from Get It Together, Hum has been restored to its original near-15 minute length. Both Boogie and Joyful Jukebox Music have long been highly sought by collectors, and were elated to have them available for the first time on CD. No mere sweeping of the dusty corners of the vaults, this.

5 out of 5 stars No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16

This selection does not have a song list, but in case it's any use to you in deciding the check out the Jackson 5 in general....

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of the opening song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (If this selection does not feature sound clips, look at other Jackson 5 records here on Amazon to hear the mentioned snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?

3 out of 5 stars I'll admit, it's not their best.......2005-12-03

But being the Jackson fan that I am, I have to say that because I know they had better albums out. I noticed a lot of people were wondering Where's Michael on this album. It was unfortunate that he only collaborated on the song 2300 Jackson Street, but hey maybe one day when they decide to do another album he'll be more on there. I was upset that Janet didn't do anything but collaborate on 2300 either. I think Randy could've left the song that he had on there in regards to his motorcycle off of the album. But I still enjoyed the rest of the album. What would be cool is if they do another album and turn it into a family thing, where each one does a song or two and then do a family song. That would be nice.

3 out of 5 stars Where's Michael?.......2005-04-07

Inarguably, this album was the Jacksons' worst and most forgettable, ever. There's Jackie,Tito,Marlon,Jermaine and Randy but where's Michael? I guess we could say Michael is enjoying his persistent success as a solo performer, living off his endless royalties from sales of his OFF THE WALL,BAD and THRILLER albums. Minus Michael, the group should have gone back to what they originally were, the Jackson Five. Personally,I thought the album was cool, but DESTINY,TRIUMPH and VICTORY were far better than this. Michael personally made the Jackson 5/Jacksons popular.

3 out of 5 stars Good try.......2004-12-22

True, there were no big pop hits here with the absence of Michael. But the four Jacksons that remained for this, their last disc on Epic, did their best to at least put together a record on-par with what was out there. It's too bad that Michael's name bared so much on the success of the group, because it's likely that if these songs were covered by most any popular act of the day, it would have been more commercially successful (the lame cover art didn't help, however!). Most of the songs are listenable, if not cookie-cutter synth jams. However, the Spanish-tinged "Maria," intense "Art of Madness," as well as the melodic and romantic "Private Affair" give listeners a few highlights. Sure, just about the whole family and extended family appear to sing on the title track, but it didn't result in success. At least they made a video for it, though it didn't gain much airplay. Though it's unfortunate that this record didn't garner commercial success, those who hear it can at least recognize the ability of the "other" Jacksons to stand on their own. Even without Michael, it isn't any worse than their 1984 "Victory" album.

4 out of 5 stars Jacksons without Michael didn't sound very bad.......2004-05-14

Though having been a Michael fan many years ago (actually I was starting when 2300 Jackson St. was released), I was able to listen to it as a brilliant group album. It's true that some songs are not quite good, but still it's a good funky release. How could they have sounded in the '90s?

In my opinion, the worst song is the only one where Michael's voice is present. I used to jump it.

Anyway, the best release from the Jackson family that year was Janet's Rhythm Nation 1814, doubtless.

3 out of 5 stars mediocre album effort.......2004-01-05

I don't know why people say the album is bad just because Michael is not singing on it. There are more people who are "The Jacksons" than only Michael. Jermaine is a good lead singer. I personally like his voice even more than Michael's. The ballad with the same title as the album features all Jacksons but not La Toya. La Toya is not on the album at all.

4 out of 5 stars COVERS QUITE A BIT.......2004-11-26

Wonderful compilation of the male Jackson musicians, though it makes me wonder why they left out tracks from VICTORY and the "2300 Jackson Street" song featuring Michael from 1989. Nonetheless, it covers all the Jackson 5 hits, the hits that started Michael out on his own (from "Got to be There" to the groundbreaking "Billie Jean"), the top Jacksons hits from 1976-80, and Jermaine's biggest hit "Let's Get Serious" from 1980. "Daddy's Home", Jermaine's song from 1973, is surprisingly missing. Worth the purchase, and especially worth it if you're a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Curious Hodgepodge But Fabulous Music.......2004-09-28

Music: 4.5 stars... Compilation: 3.5 Stars

There are a lot of Jackson 5/Jacksons compilations available, so the question is where does this one stack up? The answer is, not bad at all, but not the greatest either.

"The Jacksons Story" (20 tracks, 78 min.) tries to compile the Jackson 5/Jacksons in a single CD, and what a difficult task that is! The album starts off with the true-and-tried earliest Jackson 5 hits (such as "ABC", "I Want You Back" etc.), in remarkable remastered sound. It then jumps to Michael's earliest solo hits such as "Ben" and "Got to Be There". After that we go to the awkward mid-70s period, which for no apparent reason also includes Jermaine Jackson's only bona fide hit (1980's "Let's Get Serious", a great song actually), before we get to the late 70's streak of great Jacksons hits, including "Blame it on the Boogie", "Shake Your Body", "Lovely One" etc. Inexplicably absent from this compilation is "State of Shock", the huge hit featuring Mick Jagger. Instead, again for no apparent reason, 2 Michael monster solo hits ("Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Billie Jean") are tagged at the end. What do they have to do with the Jacksons story?

In all, this CD contains a ton of incredible music, but the compilation is a hodgepodge that goes all over the map. Not a bad album by any measure, but just a weird compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Far from the complete "Story".......2004-07-28

Everybody knows that The Jackson 5's hits have been recycled on hits compilation to death. But this is the first time the early hits are combined with their latter day CBS recordings which were finally compiled a few months earlier on The Essential Jacksons.
For casual fans, this is a great compilation to not only get the tried and true Motown hits, but also the underrated CBS recordings (Shake Your Body,Enjoy Yourself,Lovely One,Heartbreak Hotel ).But the collections biggest flaw is the inclusion of solo hits from Michael(especially two hits from his CBS albums) and Jermaine which would've made room for other hits and album cuts not included (Sugar Daddy,Maybe Tomorrow,Looking Through The Windows,Get It Together,Dreamer,Goin Places,Push Me Away,The Things I Do For You,Torture,Body).
A nice sampler of the Jacksons work,A two CD set would've really told the whole story.
