Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson "one of America's greatest living poets," and one listen to the 50 sumptuous tracks in this power-packed two-CD set provides validation for the quote. Aside from being Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.'s right-hand man almost from the label's inception, William "Smokey" Robinson was the author of a truckload of hits for the fledgling Motor City operation. With the Miracles, he was in peak form. This excellent compilation covers all the bases: from timeless classics such as "Shop Around," "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tracks of My Tears," "More Love," "I Second That Emotion," and the immortal "Tears of a Clown" to gems like 1960's "Who's Lovin' You" (later popularized by a youthful Michael Jackson and his brothers) and the group's earliest sides, "Got a Job," "Bad Girl," and "Way Over There." There are treats like a live version of "Going to a Go-Go" and previously unreleased cuts like "My Heart Says Yes" and "'Til You Were Gone." Truly a remarkable collection that leaves no doubt that Smokey and the Miracles remained at the top of their game for almost 15 years. --David Nathan

No less an authority than Bob Dylan called Smokey Robinson "America's greatest living poet." Robinson wrote or cowrote numerous Motown classics for other artists, and songs with complex, emotional lyrics such as "The Tears of a Clown," "The Tracks of My Tears," and "I Second That Emotion," that became major hits for his own group, the Miracles. A cursory knowledge of Robinson's work is essential for any fan of pop music, and that's about what you'll get from this set. It doesn't get too deep into the Miracles' incredible run of 29 Top 40 hits recorded between 1960 and 1975, but it does include the bare essentials, plus two from the early days of Robinson's solo career, and one--"Love Machine"--that the Miracles took to the top of the charts without him. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Got all the songs I wanted.......2007-07-13

Tracks of my Tears, You've Really Got a Hold On Me, Ooh Baby Baby, I Second That Emotion. All easily worth the $6 total I paid with shipping for this CD. Who hasn't heard Smokey Robinson? No need to review the songs, we all know they are all time classics. The 20th century masters sets don't always have the best songs of an artist or group, but this one did.

3 out of 5 stars OOOOOOOOOOO, No Baby Baby.......2007-05-21

With the past several years, more of the R&B industry, has really seemed to miss out a whole lot when it absolutely comes to great music. Although it has been more Hip Hop and Rap, I really haven't heard a whole lot when it traditionally comes to contemporary R&B. There are so many classic acts, especially from the Motown era that are not really getting any attention other than minor releases these days, which is very unfortunate. Acts like Diana Ross ans The Commodores don't seem to have that attention anymore, and that also is happening with Smokey Robinson as well. He has spent five decades as a seductive crooner on his own, and with The Miracles, but there hasn't been a definitive hits record that has shown that right now. Even a budget one like this seems to be a hit, but most likely could be a miss.

The 2000 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Smokey Robinson, is a budget-priced single disc retrospective on his own solo hits, and not with his era with the Miracles from the 1960's. The songs here have all been collected well, but could've been remastered a bit better. The collection isn't really isn't a definitive reflection of his career, but works better for those who haven't heard his music yet. The collection includes classic tracks like Being With You, One Heartbeat, and Let Me Be The Clock. The album does try to bring the classic soul style back out, but misses out like most of the hits records from the 20th Century Masters series. This one overlooks his era with The Miracles, which was highlighted on another album, as well as classic tracks from Smokey including Ebony Eyes with the late Rick James from Superfreak fame, as well as his adult contemporary hits Just To See Her and Everything You Touch.

All in all, I really was expecting a whole lot better from this hits album from Smokey Robinson. It isn't really a bad record for those who haven't heard any great songs from the Motown era, but there are better single disc hits collections including the 1997 Ultimate Collection from Smokey Robinson, which is out of print, but available used, or the 2005 My World: The Definitive Collection which is currently a better bet at around this price. This one though misses the mark a bit from making love too, even more than a thousand times.

3 out of 5 stars Like all the 20th Century Masters cds, it's very short.......2005-07-22

The 20th Century Masters Collection is clearly a budget collection. So generally it never exceeds 12 tracks. And of course you can't sum up Smokey Robinson's carreer in 11 tracks. Still, the music deserves much more than 5 stars. Smokey Robinson has invented Quiet Storm, even before the late Luther Vandross. All the tracks are pure gems.
The good thing with this kind of cds is that it never seems too lenghty, it's always perfect, and makes you want to put the cd in shuffle. But well, the Ultimate Collection contains 17 songs and even if you find it too lenghty, it's always better to have 17 songs than 11, because it's you who select the songs so if you want to listen to 11 songs from this cd, it's also possible.
I know what I say seems ridiculous but I admit I regret a lot to have bought this collection instead of the Ultimate one.
This is the only cd I own from Smokey so far and it leaves me wanting more.
I wouldn't recommend it, except if you're looking for a budget cd

5 out of 5 stars An ample sample. Original recordings in brilliant sound. .......2005-03-02

This was the only Smokey Robinson & The Miracles I could find in my hometown and I was very pleased with it. It features 11 of Smokey & The Miracles's biggest hits in superlative sound. Smokey Robinson was one of the greatest songwriters in pop history and a major influence to Bob Dylan who referred to him in 1965 as "America's best poet". Whoever said the sound on this CD was bad must be listening it through a tin can because this was one of the best sounding Motown releases I've ever bought. Also these are the original recordings and some of his best, "Tracks Of My Tears" "Oooh Baby Baby" "Mickey's Monkey" "Tears Of A Clown" "I Second The Emotion" "Shop Around" "You Really Got A Hold On Me" "More Love"plus an extended studio verson of "Love Machine" from 1985 along with a couple of solo Smokey hits from the early 80's, "Cruisin" "Just To See Her". I admit that 11 classic Smokey songs may seem a bit skimpy, but if you don't have any CD's by him and you're on a budget, this is an excellent purchase. These would probably be your favorite 11 Smokey cuts even if you had 100 Smokey cuts in a deluxe boxed set. A good deal.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!!.......2004-12-22

I just bought this CD and am totally disgusted with it. Looks like a great line-up of songs, right? Songs that you may have to purchase two or three albums to have, right? That's what I thought too. The fact of the matter is that the titles contained on this disc are NOT the original version of the Smokey songs we all know and love. This kind of duping of the listening and buying public ought to be stopped. Curses to Motown for their attempts at passing off outakes as the originals. It may be awhile, if ever, that I purchase anything on the Motown label. Do yourself and your pocketbook a favor and stay away from this turkey and for that matter, any of Motown's Millenium Masters series. They are a sham!

This collection of album tracks from the Miracles' heyday functions as a shadow greatest-hits collection. Indeed, if the group hadn't been blessed with such a prolific leader, tunes such as "More, More, More of Your Love," "From Head to Toe," "Swept for You Baby," and "Backfire" might have found their places on the radio. As it is, casual Smokey fans have a dozen or more hidden classics to discover here. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You'll Want More, More, More..........2001-05-15

This collection is one of a series of "More Of The Best" CDs that Rhino put out in association with Motown (the others were on The Four Tops, The Temptations, and Marvin Gaye). If you have one of the various hits collections on The Miracles, use this one to augment that one, and further your appreciation of a great group. A songwriter as profound and prolific as Smokey Robinson was bound to have some great tracks not be released as A-sides. In addition to the title track, you'll find the red-hot "More, More, More Of Your Love" here, and it's sure to fill a dance floor. "I Need A Change" is a track that first appeared on album on the vinyl compilation, Greatest Hits From The Beginning. This was its CD debut, and more hits from that classic album have been issued on another CD collection of rare tracks, "Along Came Love." "From Head To Toe" was a major-league track that got minor-league treatment due to the fact that it was on an album (Going To A Go-Go) that was overflowing with classic hits. It's one of the highlights of this CD. The collection follows the group's progress right up to the last year before Smokey started his solo career. It's interesting to see how Smokey's writing changed through these years, and also how he handled material from outside sources (compare "My World Is Empty Without You" and "Faces"). All in all, this CD is well worth the money. They just don't make records like this any more. After giving these songs a listen, you're sure to want "More, More, More..."!

5 out of 5 stars Great Hidden Gem.......2000-07-14

This is THe Kind Of Album that you want from one of your all-time favorites.while Motown is Known for putting out 99 Greatest Hits Sets it's Refreshing to get your hands on something of this Magnitude. The Miracles were a Tight Band Vocally with Great songs&Music. But Having a Genius Such as Smokey Robinson as your Leader Overshadowed them.still together this is Winning Material for any fan of The Miracles.these are Essential Motown Releases not the 99 Greatest Hit Compilations that they Stock Pile.

5 out of 5 stars Many great tracks not found elsewhere........1999-07-22

This is an album put out in 1993 for Miracles fans, not general pop fans, and is worth the money just for the fantastic I need a change, not otherwise available on CD. First two tracks are out on CD on Hi We're The Miracles (reissue of their first ever album) but it's hard to find. Tracks 7-11 are likewise impossible to find on CD, and Swept and Don't think are beautiful ballads, nearly the equal of hits like Ooo baby baby. I can't find track 13, a decent Tears of a clown period piece, anywhere else, and the remaining tracks are from 1969-1970 albums that are no longer available. Great value.

Updated in stereo for this 1999 reissue, these Christmas cuts come mainly from 1963, with two Tamla album selections from '68 and '70 added. This Motown superstar's Christmas album is really a showcase for Robinson's timeless voice. Warm and romantic, Smokey Robinson is a consummate singer, a pharaoh of the falsetto and alto ranges who owns one of the 1960s' truly golden throats; when he sings all the other Miracles seem to fade into the mix. Robinson's lyrically rich version of the Stevie Wonder-penned "It's Christmas Time" highlights a 16-song collection of familiar seasonal fare and public-service greetings. Boomers who remember this from their lives as kids may want to share it with their children or their children's children, if only to commemorate the singing genius of that other Mr. Robinson. --Martin Keller

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smokey At His Very Best.......1999-12-03

Not only is this an excellent Christmas album, with very strong Christian overtones, it is also a collection of some of Smokey Robinson's finest vocal performances. The sound of both the earlier and the latter albums, which were combined for this reissue, is remarkably clean and yet warm. Add in a thoughful packaging effort and you have one of the best Christmas releases of the season.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars THE MIRACLES...MOTOWN'S GREATEST GROUP...PERIOD !!.......2006-06-11

I dont care what others say about The Supremes,Temptations, or other Motown groups, the MIRACLES were the greatest group to ever come out of Motown.PERIOD!! Why ? for one thing, they were the FIRST MOTOWN GROUP.It was their success that paved the way for all the others. Had they not been sucessful, there would have been NO MOTOWN,and none of those other groups would have been found fame ,or at least not to the extent which they did. They also had Motown's first million-selling record "Shop Around".THE MIRACLES put MOTOWN ON THE MAP!! During the company's critical early years- 1959-1964- they were BY FAR Motowns TOP GROUP,(despite what certain reviewers have written}with TOP 10 pop hits in 1961,'62,AND '63,the STAR ATTRACTION of the legendary MOTORTOWN REVUES,and the only group that was bringing any serious money into the company!!Yet,while all the others were inducted, AS GROUPS,into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME,THE MIRACLES were ignored. They chose to induct only SMOKEY.What a shame and insult to Motown's First Group. The TEMPTATIONS ? great singers and dancers to be sure, but what most Temptations fans won't tell you is that 9 of their first 12 hits were actually written by The MIRACLES !! not just Smokey,THE WHOLE GROUP !! Don't believe it ? just look at the writing credits on the Tempts GREATEST HITS album !THE SUPREMES ? They wouldn't have even GOTTEN on Motown if not for Smokey !!Stevie Wonder? He was discovered by Miracles member RONNIE WHITE !! MARVIN GAYE,MARY WELLS,& THE MARVELETTES? Yeah, they wrote their stuff too.The MIRACLES were responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the success of just about EVERY EARLY ARTIST on the MOTOWN LABEL!! In fact ,of the five leading Motown groups ( Supremes, Temptations,4 tops,Miracles,J-5 }The MIRACLES were the ONLY ones that wrote their own material !! Hopefully one day ,the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME will induct them ALL,SMOKEY,BOBBY,RONNIE,PETE, MARV & CLAUDETTE ,not just SMOKEY , as they did.Want to know why they deserve it? Just listen to this CD.Then read the writing credits. It will prove that SMOKEY wasn't the ONLY serious talent in this group !!

5 out of 5 stars How can this be in limited release!?!?!?!?.......2002-07-08

This great collection should be permanently available. It is impossible to overstate the influence of Smokey Robinson to the Motown Sound and to sixties music (and beyond!) in general.

The sound of these disks is very good. The booklet has some great photos, material about the history of the group, and information about each recording.

The only thing that I keep wondering is why people insist that the great sounding bassoon on "Tears of a Clown" is a baritone sax. Folks, that is a BASSOON!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the soul era.......1998-12-05

Anyone who remembers the music of the late 50's and the sounds of the soul era must have this album. Smokey and the Miracles take you from the highs to the lows...alternately clapping and crying. Although not all of thes songs were tremendous hits, you'll remember them from somewhere.
