After the legendary Live at the Apollo and the even better Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, James Brown could be forgiven if this 1970 live set disappoints. But this is Brother James, so skip the forgiveness. Sex Machine is the bomb, capturing a thrilling moment in Brown's funky revolution. The disc features 12 hot and sweaty, and sometimes slinky, live cuts recorded with the James Brown Band in 1969, plus three more studio jams (including a 10-minute title track) with his next band, the great JB's. "Can I get into it?" James shouts at the top. Oh man--does he even have to ask? --David Cantwell

Ah, James...........2006-12-28
James, you let me down, brother...I thought out of all the people in the world, you were gonna be the one that lived forever. I thought you were immortal, super-bad, and impervious to death. That's okay, man, I forgive you. You will continue to live on in my heart, my mind, and of course, in my soul with your great recordings. I know that wherever you are now, James, you are makin' it funky.
Thank You for blessing my life...
The real thing - totally hot, genuine and funky.......2006-12-26
Maybe the reason i don't like hip-hop is because i heard this album (and many others) by the master of minimalism and soul. James Brown released a lot of hot albums, but this one oozes sweat and energy. That simple. Listening to this album is like standing at a primordial swamp at the dawn of creation: a TON of contemporary black music is directly indebted to and descended from J.B and especially this album. Just *$^@+++$&&!&!~ing buy it already
**** Slack Jawed ! ****.......2006-10-23
As a long time fan of Mr. Dynamite , I have collected a LOT of his recordings, and although I do especially love the Live Apollo shows especially 62 and 67 , THIS recording IMO runs circles around those two. It's the JB's with Bootsy and Catfish Collins and Bobby Byrd and Fred Wesley that make this record SMOKE !.........It's actually from two different dates and two different bands , but it ALL works !!!........If your a fan or a newcomer who wants to hear what " The Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness " is REALLY all about , then pick this record up ........You'll soon understand what all the fuss is about ....Enjoy !
As good as it gets............2006-06-26
I had this album in 1971 when I was in college. I attended many a James Brown show. It was a GREAT party album then. NOW 35 years later and one who still loves the grooves and beats, I find it long overdue in my CD collection. This is ventage James Brown at his best. This one is a "must have" for any James Brown fan especially the live version of "Sex Machine".
The sounds of freedom.......2005-07-23
For those tired of today's mainstream music scene, which seems to combine the worst of both worlds with its mix of the pointlessly offensive and the blandly sanitized, James Brown's Sex Machine is a rousing shot of pure energy, a reminder that music can have the ability to move its listeners in more ways than one. Sex Machine is a supreme distillation of decades worth of black music, compressing rock, soul, and R&B into a lean, frighteningly efficient sound that's had hips shaking since its release. Regardless of your age, race, or any other irrelevant superficial characteristic, this hour-plus-long live recording's raw, sweaty power effortlessly comes accross in every dizzyingly nimble horn inflection, every razor-sharp guitar line, and every intricate polyrhythm. And of course, towering over it all is the singular presence of James himself, exhibiting his unmistakable charisma as he shouts, howls, and wails his upbeat, liberating lyrics.
This album's finest moments are to be found in its tightly-played, compulsively danceable funk numbers, most notably the opening Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine, Brother Rapp (Part I & Part II), I Got the Feelin', and the high-octane closer Mother Popcorn. Driven by propulsive grooves and frenetic arrangements, these tracks and others like them all prove extremely effective when it comes to loosening inhibitions and provoking unconscious spasms of head-bobbing and foot-tapping. However, that's not to discount the record's emotional, horn-fueled balladry, led by the supremely soulful and musically complex Bewildered and If I Ruled the World. This set also throws in the instrumental double-shot of Lowdown Popcorn, which allows you to hear the band's instrumental chops if they weren't apparent already. All in all, Sex Machine is an essential document of the career of one of popular music's most important performers, and a must-buy for non-lame-o's everywhere.

Product Description
The Godfather of Soul appointed himself the Minister Of New New Super Heavy Funk for this 1975 release, and it was subtitled Disco Soul (if thats not entirely an oxymoron). This disc catches the hardest working man in show business in a transitional phase, as he slides his patented funk into a brand new, sequin-encrusted, spandex bag.
Brown was in one of the most prolific phases of his recording career when this album was recorded, as he released seven(!) albums in 1975-76. Always keenly aware of changing public taste, JB embraced the new dance movement eagerly, even to the point of putting out a disc called Everybodys Doin The Hustle & Dead On The Double Bump, which they were, if only for just about as long as it took to play that album.
The album resonated more keenly in the urban community than it did in mainstream pop culture; it managed to get to number 10 on the Black Album chart, while it didnt quite break the upper half of the Pop Album chart, topping out at 103. In fact, this was Browns last top ten charting album to date. Remarkably, he notched three top 25 albums in 1975, despite critics claims that he was beginning to repeat himself.
One slight shortcoming of the CD version of this album is that it cannot reproduce at full size the unique typography for the words Sex Machine as seen in the original 12 x 12 artwork. But it still sounds great.

lost 1975 record.......2007-05-01
I was so plesed when I first heard that Hip-O-Select are prepare to put this 1975 LP to cd. I expected the best. Earlier I heard "I feel good 1975" or "Problems" on Make it funky compilation and the quality of these tracks produced by Fred Wesley was very big for me.
First letdown is that the lp package has no liner notes. Thats really shame because i think that year 1975 was one of most creative and interesting in J.B.'s sound. The second is not so good sound quality of this cd. Japanese imports from p-vine has mostly better sound quality and i gave only 2 stars for it. Shame.
What is undeniable, this is music quality. JB said he was run out of ideas in this heavy funk period, but i love all these remakes of his old hits.Second part "Sex Machine"is really treasure. I love "Deep in it" with his hard driving guitar and I think that Alicia Keys used this sample in her song produced by Timbaland.
Overall i give 4 stars and I ask music record companies to release other 1975 album "Everybody's doin the hustle, dead on the double bump" best in reedition with Sex Macvhine today album on one disc...
I sure 'nough feel good!.......2007-04-14
This had to be one of my favorite James Brown albums. I'm glad they finally released it on CD. The version of 'I feel good' has to be the funkiest ever! Even though some of the tracks are 12 minutes of jamming, they are just outtakes of even longer jams. This is just some incredible Funk.

Punk Angst In Overdrive! .......2005-04-23
Irreverent. Ingenious. Funny. Cathartic. For best effect, pump up the volume - with the headphones on, of course. Highly recommended for middle aged types who are desperately trying to cope with existential angst while reminiscing the Golden Age (1985-1995). PS: A bit of "empirical advice", shall we say. Do not drive while listening to this CD in your car...especially the track "A Sheltered Life".
A fine retrospective.......2002-05-04
During their decade of existence, Carter USM were consistently one of the best acts in the UK indie scene, both live and on record. One memorable review described their music as "The Clash meets the Pet Shop Boys", which seems fairly accurate if a bit too simplistic.
Dismissed in the US as either a novelty act or as "too English", Carter (James Robert Morrison, a.k.a. "Jim Bob" and Les "Fruit Bat" Carter) nevertheless made outstanding music full of energy and wit and compassion and righteous indignation at the state of mankind. Although they officially split a few years back, they still come up with the occasional collaboration under the name Who's The Daddy Now? as well as their individual projects, Jim's Super Stereoworld and Abdoujaparov, respectively.
This compilation is a good place to start.
brilliant..........2001-04-17
this is the first carter cd i have owned after hearing their music from friends... they should have gotten more media play in the united states because they are a very catchy mix of punk and new wave... anytime, anyplace, anywhere reminds me of the petshopboys vaguely... but it's really a lovely starter for the novice carter fan... i recommend it in a heartbeat...

A Collection of Excellent B-Sides.......2000-06-19
The marvellous Carter were one of the seminal British bands of the 90s, combining lyrics that were creative, vitriolic and witty, excellent punk riffs and flawless synthesized drum beats.
In this collection, the manic duo Jim Bob and Fruibat have gathered together B-Sides from such singles as 'Sherriff Fatman' (an attack on corrupt landlords), 'Bloodsport For All' (about abuse in the armed forces) and 'Lenny and Terrence' (a comment on the pop composings of Lenny Kravitz and Terence Trent d'Arby), yet never does the quality of the collection show any dip from first-rate work. Indeed, most of the songs on this CD would, in my opinion, warrant single releases of their own. The songs range in content and style from the huge assault on the royal family, 'Stuff the Jubilee', in which Carter are their wise-cracking, angered best, to the sentimental 'Always The Bridemaid, Never The Bride' in which the bands softer side is revealed.
While, of course, the album would be a pointless purchase for those who already have all the singles, such those new to the Carter USM experience would surely benefit from having this in their collection.
It makes you wonder how the Spice Girls ever became succesful, never mind famous...

This live outing shows Kool & The Gang in their infancy. Formed as a jazz group, they quickly evolved into a horn-based club band playing hits of the day along with their own original songs, and this package represents them at this embryonic stage in their career. The only significant hit here is the preachy "Who's Gonna Take the Weight," which became a Top 5 R&B hit. The rest of the album shifts between jazzy instrumentals, dance floor jams, and contemporary R&B covers from the early '70s. A fine live representation of the band before they broke through in 1973, this is still the portrait of a band in search of an identity and sound that they hadn't quite discovered. --Tom Vickers
Customer Reviews:
Kool & the Gang Live and Funky.......2002-07-15
This is an excellent sample of the original Kool and the Gang (pre J.T. Taylor) with a raw, jazzy, and funky set. Recorded in 1970 (and released the following February), this features some excellent instrumentals and a nice streetwise vibe that captures the mood of the era (althlough it still sounds very good today). The rendition of "Trying to Make a Fool of Me" sounds like a Black college marching band playing during the halftime crowing of the homecomeing queen (which is not a bad thing). But the covers of "Walk on By" and "Wichita Lineman" add some creative, jazzy improvisation that takes these songs to another dimension. "Who's Going To Take The Weight" is the fisrst of the gang's message songs, but it doesn't beat you over the head like many others from that time, and the previously unreleased "Kool It, Here Comes the Fuzz" sounds like the soundtrack to a Black exploitation film (some two years before the genre began). This wonderful live set does the amazing feat of capturing the mood of the era while still sounding enjoyable today.

A Must For A Surf Music Fan.......2004-12-12
If you have not seen Laika and the Cosmonauts live you may not believe your ears when listening to this album. These guys are masters of their instruments. They play the familiar tunes from their albums with double speed and energy but with precision. It is flawless. I have seen this band like dozen times live and it never fails to deliver an excellent show. L&C is a great live band and although they tour occasionally in USA, many fans will never see them play live. This album is a treat for them. Put this album to your player, turn the volume to southeast (10 that is) and enjoy. The cover art is misleading but it only express the warped sense of humour these guys have.
misleading cover art.......2003-05-08
This disc is an excellent mix of LatC's own compositions and classic surf covers. Their version of the "Get Carter" theme rules! All the tracks were recorded live (from ten different concerts), so there is some audience noise and (Finnish) banter. At slightly over 75min, you are getting a good value, too. But, the album artwork confuses those with weak minds. I got tired of explaining to my coworkers that I was not listening to Dirty Dancing soundtrack.
Surfing in Finland?.......2001-04-24
When I heard a song on a college radio station from the newest (and Live) CD from Laika and the Cosmonauts, I thought it was some new psychedellic band from Europe. Though I rarely ever order CDs upon hearing one song, I did so in this case. And was I ever in for a treat! It turns out this band is mostly an instrumental "surf" type band -- which conjurs up some amazing images, given the fact they are from Finland! The band's style is ecclectic and energetic. And I can only imagine how wonderful studio albums from them sound, because their live recordings sound flawless.
