Although George Clinton and Parliament were known for their futuristic, space-age cosmic-slop imagery, they were far from a one-trick pony. Case in point is 1978's brilliant Motor Booty Affair, which found Clinton and the gang diving into the deep and coming back up for air with a collection of aqua-based songs as trippy and otherworldly as anything the group ever created. Anchored by squiggly synths, courtesy of Bernie Worrell, the CD found Clinton's mouthpiece Starchild strapping on his fins and hanging with the stingrays. The slithery and soulful title track ranks as one of the most complex compositions of Clinton's career, and (You're a Fish and I'm A) Water Sign" is Clinton's psychedelic love jones in full effect. Sir Nose D-Void Of Funk Puts His Snorkel To Use.......2007-05-27

If you grew up in the Vanilla Suburbs, you woulda been down wit Da Beatles. In 1966, they put out a record called "Yellow Submarine," which had to be the boringest contemplation of the sea and the creatures dwelling thereabouts. Yawn. They even made a movie out of it, which was even more dull. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

It would be 12 years before somebody with somethang Deep would come up with a P-Funk psychedelic sea shanty, the "Motor Booty Affair." George Clinton and company would brew a funk concoction of infinite magnitude, replete with Bernie Worrell's scribbles and squiggles. After chanting "Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquaoloop" for the thousandth time with the Brides of Funkenstein, I have but one question: "What does it take to get this made into 35mm?" This totally kicks booty on those insects from Liverpool.

The premise of "Motor Booty Affair" is to complete the job of shining the Flashlight on the archenemy of da Funk, Sir Nose D-Void Of Funk, which was started in Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome. Sir Nose is basically your average Bryant Gumbel/Barack Obama type who won't go downtown. He won't dance OR swim.

But, fortunately, we got Rumpofsteelskin, Howard Codsell, Mr. Wiggles (one slithering idiot), the Starchild, Bobba and a whole fishtank of other clones and maggots with the funksmanship to give Sir Nose a funkitude adjustment.

As much as I'm down with "Gamin' On Ya," "Dr. Funkenstein," and "Chocolate City," this record's got the grooves where everythang truly IS on the one. Motor Booty Affair is truly the funk apogee, a fish out of water but is tighter than James Brown in a wetsuit. Five of the tracks are pure R&B funk (when R&B meant grooving with instruments): Mr. Wiggles, Rumpofsteelskin, Aqua Boogie, Liquid Sunshine and One of Those Funky Things. Solid!

Put this wax on your platter and git up on the backstroke!

When this album came out. I was so much in awe of the whole concept. The album cover, the pop up comic's. The artwork, but most of all the way you can see "Walter Junie Morrison"'s signature all over the place. This album like the other peron's review said, it is the "underwater" version of "Mothership Connection". The Mothership is "out there" while "Motor Booty" is benath there...sorta speak. I like the entire album, but the one slow song is actually about "going down" (if you know what I mean)....In the song "Im a fish" ("can we go down, when we get down?") And of course a reference to "tootin" in the song "DEEP", "You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him snort coke"..or somn silly like "You can tune a piano, but you can't TUNE A FISH!". It would have been a great soundtrack for that Little Mermaid from Disney!.....anyway, I think it's a great CD. it is bright, it's brilliant. The arrangements are soo funky. The vocals, horns, and everything. If U a PFUNK fan, you gotta have this album. The Son "Rumpofsteelskin" was originally for a Bootsy album, but the Boot was cool wit it being on this joint!

You had To Go There---Underwater for The Funk.......2006-09-07

This was better than drugs! funk underwater and that, That Bird!! George, I take my hat off to you Mr. Clinton! this is what happens when you get "touched" by PFunk--Parliament/Funkadelic let you know "We Got This"--underwater Funk, you can't get better than that! What's next, they probably start their own army wavin' a funk Flag----Oh yeah, they did that same year--What a Funk Mob!!

The Motor Booty Affair has a unique sound for a Parliament album, but it ranks up there with Mothership Connection as one of the band's supreme accomplishments. Basically it is a loose concept album about funky goings-on in the underwater city of Atlantis. As a result, there are various attempts at crafting an "underwater" sound, from extra-bubbly bass to gargling vocals to swirling horns and guitars, and of course, innumerable oceanic puns. The length to which they succeed is more than admirable. Most importantly, though, this is a collection of nine tremendous songs.

The one-two punch of "Mr. Wiggles" and "Rumpofsteelskin" introduce us to a couple of new characters in the Parliament universe, but more importantly set the tone with bouncy, light-hearted grooves that rank among the catchiest the band has ever recorded. Gone is the darkness of "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk" and the social commentary of "Chocolate City". This is life-affirming music. Nowhere else has George Clinton and company ever made a whole album this fun, all the way through. "Water Sign" is the only down-tempo track on the album, and it mixes the group's trademark sleaze with a somewhat sincere attempt at a love song. It is truly a delirious highlight. Before we get too relaxed, however, Parliament picks up the pace again with "Aqua Boogie" and "One of Those Funky Things". "Liquid Sunshine" is an experience all to itself, from the trippy onslaught of an intro to the relentless, pulsating funk of the track's climax. The title track edges up real close to disco, but Parliament is so secure in their funkiness that there's no chance of them falling into the chasm. In fact, after the bridge, you'll probably find yourself questioning how it's possible that any band ever sounded so unselfconsciously funky. By the time the epic closer, "Deep", rolls around, you're not sure if you've been funking for a matter of minutes or hours, but you can rest assured that you aren't about to stop.

Whenever I hear Motor Booty Affair, I'm convinced that it's the greatest album ever recorded by Parliament, Funkadelic, George Clinton or anybody else for that matter. Of course, there are a few other albums I can say that about as well. One thing is for sure, however, and that is no P-Funk incarnation ever recorded an album that melded all of the individual band member's talents into such a seamless, unstoppable force. You're never inclined to say "that's a Bernie Worrell track" or "the horns really carry that one". Instead, all of the instruments are woven into a dense fabric that is difficult to separate. The grooves are never really spaced out like they are on prior Parliament albums (although they are definitely "spaced out"), and the layered, vocals-by-committee approach was never really used as effectively before. In all, Parliament delivers a perfect, intense blast of Summer funk that never lets the party slow up.

Second Only To "Mothership Connection" In Their Reportoire!!.......2006-01-19

Of course, as far as the Parliament side of George Clinton's
"Parliafunkadelicment Thang", late 1975's
"Mothership Connection" was their breakthrough
and most complete opus!--Bar None!
Not taking away from "Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein",
"Live"or "Funkentelechy VS The Placebo Syndrome"...
they were all good too!
But as far as vision and scope, "Mothership" was the truth!
This album though, 1978's "Motor Booty Affair"
is a very close second!
The concept of Starchild and the whole outer space
funk mob going down to the lost city of Atlantis
and causing it to rise from the bottom of the sea with
Da' Funk!!--I mean, c'mon!
George Clinton casts himself as Mr. Wiggles as well as
Starchild, along with the infamous Sir Nose D' Voidoffunk
and a new water-bound nemesis "RumpofSteelskin",
who can't shake his booty because it's made of titanium!
LOL!!--Brilliant!!
I like all of the songs on this one as I did with
"Mothership" as well as their sequence.
The stand outs are:
"Rumpofsteelskin", "Aqua Boogie", "One Of Those Funky Thangz", "Liquid Sunshine",
"Motor Booty Affair" and "Deep"!!
You can't go wrong with this classic album!---Go WIGGLE!!
