great beatles album and a cultural phenomenon..........2007-08-07

this is a very great beatles album undoubtedly. A masterwork in many ways... it has gone into the history of western culture as a revolutionary album defining the times,the feelings, and ramifications of cultures in crossroads of expressionism, vulnerability, and abandonment. Most of the songs float into each other with different colors, moods, statements, and imageries, a rarely achieved feat even by the fab four...the song structures are complex, with impeccable musicianship, lyrical brilliance, and great singing(as always!). The only oddball song on the album and yet a great relief from the deep moodiness of the album is John's 'goodmorning, goodmorning' which kind of heralds the calm before the eventual storm: 'a day in the life'(which follows the conclusion portion of the theme song...) 'A Day in the life' is the type of masterpiece that most artists spend a a lifetime trying to emulate, parallel, and equal but just can not...as amply evidenced after decades passed... Only these four artists in time could have achieved this musical zenith... A work of art that defies definition... Harrison's 'within you without you' is east-meets-west at its deepest, a profoundly philosophical song indeed... 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' is another diamond on the album amidst so many... there is little or no weakness in this album which is uniformly great and each song insertion was after mammoth thinking and contemplation though the beatles always underestimated this aspect of their album making...it didn't just become a multi-concept masterwork by chance! it was made with great labor, imagination, dedictaion, belief and of course genius... A love's labor never lost in this case...

Beatles classic.......2007-08-06

Misplaced this CD, needed this to add to our Beatles music collection. Classic Beatles. One of the best Beatles album, need I say more. Highly recommend.

Before Music Videos - SGT Peppers - An Imaginary Experience .......2007-08-01

The most amazing thing about this Beatle record was/is that it transcends the musical experience. Keep in mind that in 1967, there was no MTV or VH1. When this record was playing your imagination went wild! It was like your own personal movie in your head. It starts like being at the theatre and then you go everywhere imagineable... sitting on a sofa with meter maid, inside the home of well meaning parents, going to the freak show circus, attending a church-like service with sitar, dreaming of growing old with the one you love, sitting in a high school class p*ssed off at the world, overcoming dysfunctional relations, riding in a boat, witnessing an accident, watching a fox hunt, reading a book, WOW. And everyone saw it there own personal way, no two imaginations are alike. The Beatles took you to a magical place within your own being with this record. I am grateful that there was no video to ruin it! BRAVO Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Day in the Life is a masterpiece.

A classic.......2007-07-31

Sgt. Pepper deserves to be considered one of the greatest achievements in popular music. This issue is good quality and includes a nice booklet that explains the album - including a diagram of who's who on the cover picture.

Just a very good Beatles playlist.......2007-07-31

Is this the greatest album ever? It probably is in terms of influence, from packaging and marketing, to the very notion that a rock or pop music album really matters. In terms of its musical merit, one can easily make the case that Pepper has been overhyped - and its shortcomings are all the more glaring in light of the album's cannonical status in modern culture. This record has suffered from its own success - and after forty years - its conceivable that it now represents something of a let-down. After all, no recording could possibly meet the expectations that this album carries.
This album should be approached for what it is, a very solid album by a talented musical group (that only happens to be my favorite band - and maybe the favored band of quite a few others). The strongest points of the album are its opening tracks and closing tracks - which form a medley of sorts and further the illusion of conceptual unity. Many (Lennon included) have derided the idea that this album is truly a concept album - and it certainly is not one in the sense that the Who's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are. The concept is more fundamental - that this disc contains a set of pop/rock songs that have been thoughtfully arranged together for all time - and not packaged at random to meet immediate market demand. In a way, with Napster and I-Tunes, the great age of the album that began with Sgt. Pepper, "Pet Sounds," and other 1966/1967 releases has come to an end in this decade, and this has made it it even more difficult to grasp what the fuss was truly all about. But if one wished to make a short Beatles playlist on their I-pod that captured the overall personality of the group, as well as having a representative effort for each of its four members, and a good mix of rock, pop, and experimental numbers - Sgt. Pepper would be an ideal playlist.

Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison

I was SO disappointed with the CD. I loved the album when it came out, but the CD lacked the sound quality befitting this classic. I was glad to see that it's still in circulation via Amazon, but something went wrong.

One of my favorite Beatles albums. I've had it on vinyl since it came out many years ago and have all of the Beatles compilations on CD, but I wanted to have this whole album on CD, too. Finally got around to it and after I played it once, I was reminded what a great album this is!

Revolver wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans--including this one--remember it as their best. An object lesson in fitting great songwriting into experimental production and genre play, this is also a record whose influence extends far beyond mere they-was-the-greatest cheerleading. Putting McCartney's more traditionally melodic "Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" alongside Lennon's direct-hit sneering ("Dr. Robert") and dreamscapes ("I'm Only Sleeping," "Tomorrow Never Knows") and Harrison's peaking wit ("Taxman") was as conceptually brilliant as anything Sgt. what can revolve around revolver?.......2007-08-07

Simply no other album comes close to revolver in its originality, simple yet complex song patterns, and overall variety... This was the year 1965, and in many ways a miracle year for the history of popular music and largely due to this great work of art... Right from the first coughing heard before 'taxman' comes in to the soultrip of 'tomorrow never knows' and all that goes in between... it predates sgt pepper's by a full two years, and arguably has had more wideranging impact than any other album made in the history of popular music. Each song speaks for itself. John, Paul, George, and Ringo became universally great and admired after rubber soul and revolver came out...if they had stopped making music after revolver, they would still be considered the greatest rock group that ever existed...

Revolver is the best album of all-time.......2007-07-16

and it's by the best band of all time (and I do know all the songs off of Sgt. Pepper).

Revolver comes at the midway point of The Beatles, and it is a peak for them. Every song on this album is good at the least (except maybe Yellow Submarine), and there are plenty of great songs, not only perfectly written, but perfectly executed by John, Paul and (sometimes) George's vocals, George's lead guitar (especially in "And Your Bird Can Sing"), Paul's bass, and, of course, Ringo''s drumming. The Great songs are, IMO "Got to Get You Into My Life," "I'm Only Sleeping," "Eleanor Rigby," "I Want To Tell You," "For No One" and "And Your Bird Can Sing." Through all these songs you can see the maturing song writing abilities of Paul, John, and George that you can see starting to surface in "Rubber Soul," going past the boy-girl relationships of the early Beatles, or at least making their boy-girl songs much more complex, instead of "I'm in love, It's a great day" (which you do see part of in "Good Day Sunshine," but John and Paul still found a way to make it a complex song).

I could go on and on about the greatness of this album and the bad that made it, but i'll just get to the bottom line: Buy it.

It's the freakin' Beatles.......2007-07-16

And Revolver is a freakin' great album. Revolver is probally the best balance between normal pop and serious themes (some that will get you thinking more than The early Beatles lyrics). That's probally what stands out from the rest, the instruments include piano and horns, and they work out well. Piano's were coming into more of a focus into The Beatles' music, and those instruments came into focus more, while avoiding the expiremental tracks of the later Beatles. It's a wonderful blend of pop with the piano and other instruments that The BEatles never used, yet still staying firmly to the ground and not going into the sky of Diamonds, on a magical mystery tour.

It sounds more different because of that. Yes, people have reviewed it better, but The Beatles never stopped suprising people with all different kinds of music and styles, and kept on evolving. I think that Evolver should have been the name, so 311 shouldn't have stolen (I like The Beatles better than 311, although they can't get me that energized as 311).

Like all other Beatles albums, they are kind of short, and I have to take off .5 because of I want To Tell You, which I didn't care for as much, but every other song sounded like The Beatles knocked themselves out making it perfect. Essential.

The epitome of perfection.......2007-07-04

This has been my favorite Beatles' album for years and years and years, as well as one of my top favorite albums overall. While of course some of the techniques used on certain of the songs aren't going to seem as revolutionary or current as they were back in 1966, that doesn't change the fact that at the time, they were very radical innovations, helped to change the face of pop music, and really marked the beginning of The Beatles' mature period. By this point they'd finally fully graduated from doing just love songs and simplistic pop to dealing with weightier subjects, and using a greater amount of studio experimentation, such as the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping" and the tape loops sounding like exotic birds in "Tomorrow Never Knows." Overall, I'd have to say that it's quite possibly their best album, maybe even the one that's stood the test of time the best (even allowing for how some aspects of the music may seem dated to some people today, it doesn't come across like some horribly dated period piece either). Every song is just so great; it really just seems like the epitome of perfection, the type of album one could listen to several times in a row or every day and not get bored of or skip any tracks on (though I must admit I don't really care for "For No One"). As great as they were, how many other albums did they make that one could say were truly as perfect as this one? One can also easily understand why this has been called their acid album.

Another great thing about this album is how balanced it is. While on some albums, one Beatle predominates (such as how John sings lead on 9 of the 13 tracks on AHDN and half of the songs on RS), here it's much more distributed. John and Paul each sing 5 songs, with the requisite Ringo song ("Yellow Submarine," one of his most famous), and the remaining three songs, including the opening one, going to George. Apart from the White Album where he had 4 songs, such a relatively generous amount of songs would never happen again. One can tell from these three songs that he was really growing and maturing as a songwriter even this early into having become the band's third songwriter. The musical styles themselves are also rather balanced; there are soft songs like "Here, There, and Everywhere," fun meaningless pop like "And Your Bird Can Sing," social commentary songs like "Eleanor Rigby," the Indian-influenced "Love You To" (one of my favorite tracks), partially autobiographical songs like "She Said She Said," and songs with a strong psychedelic influence, like the hypnotic "I'm Only Sleeping" (probably my favorite track) and the closing track "Tomorrow Never Knows." I won't even get into people who are genuinely wondering why this isn't the Capitol repackaging they remember from childhood; I can't imagine this album without such key tracks as "Dr. Robert" and "I'm Only Sleeping," and am baffled as to why anyone would find the repackagings to be superior to the authentic British originals other than sentimental reasons.

Overall, this album is the perfect midway point between their early, more innocent period and their later, more serious period, a transitional bridge between the two eras. I also couldn't think of many more of their albums that would be this much of an ideal introduction to a new fan.

I bought it mainly for one song, but should have purchased if off of Itunes. Its a good album, nice happy songs, takes you back in time.

The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than Help! or A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single--with the natural exception of the goofy/weird instrumental "Flying." Even George's "Blue Jay Way" paints a vivid sound-portrait in fascinating detail. (I consider Joni Mitchell's "Car on the Hill" from Court and Spark to be a companion piece about sitting in the Hollywood Hills, waiting for somebody to show up.) And although the goofy TV movie may have been mostly Paul's baby, this album features the two 45 rpm masterpieces that sum up the quintessential best of Lennon and McCartney at this stage of their development: Paul's "Penny Lane" and John's "I Am the Walrus." --Jim Emerson

Can It Get Any Better?.......2007-06-27

Instant Classic is an overused cliche', but it describes this CD accurately. This CD is a must for any Beatle fan. It continues to show the Beatles were leaders in creative song writing and production, taking studio work to a whole different level.

The most 'out there' Beatle's album........2007-06-14

This is the first Beatles album I knew. Got it on 8-track. I knew of their earlier songs first, though I never owned any albums. I was 14 at the time and fell in love with this album. I loved every single song on it, not one was deficient. Then my 8-track was eaten by the machine. I didn't buy it again until just a week ago. In the mean time, I bought Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, and The White Album, all of which are masterpieces. All of them are so different from each other as well, each having their own personality, if you will. Well, after not having the Magical Mystery Tour for 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised that I remembered every tune. What I didn't remember was the deep psychedelia that pervaded the album. This album is both light (Your Mother Should Know, Fool on the Hill, All You Need Is Love, Baby You're a Rich Man, Penny Lane, Hello Goodbye), and dark (Strawberry Fields Forever, I Am the Walrus, Flying, Blue Jay Way, and the opener - Magical Mystery Tour). Very unique sounds on this album, and quite cool that it happened 40 years ago. Even Trent Reznor, a master in his own right owes a lot to this album. Cheers!!!

This recording (40 Years old now, wow, who would believe 1967-2007) is one of the Beatles most interesting recordings. Featuring hits like Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, I Am The Walrus, and some interesting work from the late George Harrison, Blue Jay Way, it serves as testament of how the Beatles were trying new things. One possible improvement (as if there could be) a "deluxe" edition, which would feature a miniature reproduction of the album booklet (in its entirety), featuring additional pictures and so on. Otherwise fine recording. Recommended also: Rubber Soul (which I also bought with this and generally all of the Beatles catalog[ue] [as it's spelled in England]).

part two of sgt peppers another trippy album.......2007-06-03

This is the part two of, 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band', this has the same amount of Psychedellic Trippy music as does, 'Sgt. Peppers', except this album has maybe even more. This is a very good example of what kind of music people were listening to back during The Summer Of Love 1967. Great great album it's a true example of Trippy Psychedellic Rock. This is a great album if you don't have any access to this album buy it today, if you dig Psychedellic Rock. If you do dig that you won't be mad you bought it.

Still Magical... All these years later..........2007-05-28

I still love this album as much as I have since I heard it as a pre-teen. Though I have grown to appreciate Abbey Road and Sgt. Peppers as being greater albums, I can still spend many an hours listening to the fantastic songs on this album. There is a great feel to this album. It features lovely and uplifting songs from Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, to All You Need is Love. For me, when it comes to great albums/CDs, all you need is the Beatles.

Nothing to complain about in my opinion.......2007-08-04

I normally write long, progressive reviews, but considering who I'm reviewing, I'll make this short and sweet.
Different people will say different things about "1". Some will say it needs the more cult classics of songs such as "Strawberry Fields Forever", or "I Am The Walrus", but "1" reflects the more pop side of the Beatles. It shows how they dominated the American and English charts in their time. In addition, just the fact that they can put 27 songs on one disc makes me happy.
Opinions aside, this is the greatest rock and roll ever. What more can there be said? The Beatles = Timeless music. 1 = Five-star album for me. Thanks for the time, and peace.

Beatles 1 is a good collection of the Beatles #1 hit singles. Perfect for the casual Beatles fan or for someone just being introduced to the Beatles music for the first time. If you are interested in hearing more Beatles music, collect their albums. Depending on your taste, you can get their early 60s stuff or their late 60s stuff or both time periods. Personally, I enjoy their early 60s stuff more than their late 60s stuff and have a collection of their early 60s albums.

Sloppy in conception, and even sometimes in the playing, Let It Be often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and (oh yeah) rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to implode. --Rickey Wright

Let it Beatle.......2007-07-30

I bought this CD specifically for a copy of "Two of Us" for music for my son's wedding and was surprised how well all of the music continues to hold up. Of course, I have the vinyl album from back in the day but it was never one of my very favorites. I am really glad I rediscovered it. And, of course, it is the only Beatles album produced by Phil Spector. How time does bring things to circle.

The Convoluted End.......2007-07-08

The heavy black border on the front cover, the inexplicable reversion by the band members to "younger" looks, the red apple label, the "new phase Beatles album" line on the back cover, all played their part in confusing one particular 13-year-old upon this album's release. It would only be about five years later, once the Beatle literature began to proliferate in earnest, that I comprehended the situation behind what many commentators bemoaned as a painfully weak finish to a spectacular musical career, indeed epoch. All these years later I still find myself agreeing that it was a shame the Beatles didn't keep this one in the vault and let Abbey Road stand as their true swan song.

Overall, though, Let It Be really does little to tarnish the Beatles' reputation. There are small pleasures here that stand the test of time better than some of the Beatles' more grandiose efforts. "Two of Us" and "Get Back" can proudly take their place among the best of Lennon-McCartney, and even the overproduced "Across the Universe" and "The Long and Winding Road" still have a haunting melodic beauty.

And the Beatles, being the Beatles, didn't leave this without an odd wrinkle or two in the backstory. For one thing, this is the album for which the final Beatles recording sessions were conducted. Absent John, the rest of the group convened sometime after Abbey Road was put to bed to record George's "I Me Mine", which was featured in the Let It Be film, but only in rough form. They also put some finishing touches to the title track. These sessions were conducted in January 1970, which gave the Beatles the barest toehold as a working group in the new decade. The initial release of the album also reportedly featured a book of photos that one commentator described over thirty years ago as "useless", though I've never seen that book and would very much like to, if only to say I did.

And there is this: the album is entirely free of even the barest hint of the sometimes painful tension on display in the film. I'm not sure what that means, except that they obviously had moments even at this nadir when they could rally and make the magic happen.

This Album gets such a bad rep.......2007-07-05

And i dont really know why. It has some of the beatles better songs on it, and its a pretty cohesive album on the whole. yes, it does seem that spector can be accused of overproduction; it would have undoubtedly been better if martin was producing. dont pass this album up. its essential to anyone's catalog.

Strummmmm! That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo--four fab fellows who hit the highest heights imaginable. --Jim Emerson

Love songs to touch any lovers........2007-07-18

This is one of The Beatles earlier albums. It is filled with quirky love songs. I love them all. I'm a sucker for love songs. Not one of their most experimental albums, but certainly good for what it is. The Beatles have never put out a bad album. BUY IT. LOVE IT.

A pop masterpiece.......2007-06-09

Though my favorite Beatle era has long been their middle period (RS through MMT), with their later period (1968 to the end) coming in second place, I've been getting reacquainted with this wonderful earlier album in a major way lately. Their early period might not be as polished, sophisticated, deep, or mature as their middle or later periods, but the songs on this album are all absolutely incredible. There's not a single filler song; all of them are loaded with energy, great hooks, wonderful instrumentation, and some suprisingly mature and introspective lyrics for being only their third album. The songs may all be about love, but each one is special and unique, dealing with different types and aspects of love. These aren't the typical simplistic love pop songs of 1964. It's also a landmark album in that it was their first to consist entirely of original material.

It's amazing to rediscover just how great the early Beatles were, how much kick their music had to it, making up with pure pop/rock energy what it lacked for in terms of maturity and sophistication. It's also probably true that this album is the most accurate picture of what Beatlemania was like, while the phenomenon was still new and exciting, before they had grown weary and cynical of touring and having to keep up a happy squeaky-clean public image. The guys singing these songs were still cute happy-go-lucky moptops. And though only the first 7 songs were included in the film, the other 6 are nothing to sneeze at. More bands should have such high-quality leftovers. (Although, surprisingly, this is one of the few albums where Ringo doesn't get any songs.)

The songs range from energetic pop, such as the opening title track (the opening chord still has an amazing effect so many decades later), "Can't Buy Me Love," and "Tell Me Why," to soft romantic ballads, such as "And I Love Her" (which contains some of Paul's finest lyrics, and I'm usually no longer a fan of the schmaltzy songs he often sang!) and "If I Fell" (which has some beautiful harmonising), to songs with a more complex (for a pop song) view on love and relationships, such as "You Can't Do That" (about a jealous and insecure lover) and "I'll Cry Instead" (an angry and depressed lover who got burned and wants revenge). The final track, "I'll Be Back," has also long been one of my favoritest Beatles' songs; it's so poignant and beautiful, the type of song that anyone who's had one's heart broken but still wants another chance to have a relationship with that person can relate to. And since John is my favorite Beatle, it certainly doesn't hurt my opinion of this album that he sings 9 of the 13 songs.

Overall, it's a great slice of pop paradise and Beatlemania, proving that there actually were some truly great albums made in 1964. This is far from the typical album of the era, with just a few great songs padded out by a bunch of filler. Every single track is a winner, with never a dull moment.

This music is sweet -- no Beatles fan can neglect to add this to their collection. The music and the movie are a highlights from my childhood. Ahh, those were the days.

What else but Fab!.......2007-05-14

These tunes are so much fun! The songs that were part of the soundtrack instantly take you back to the scenes in the film. What else can you say about the Beatles? Every song is good to excellent and each song points in a different musical direction. No fillers or junk where chord selection is flipped upside down and a similar song churned out. Fab four fabulous as usual!

PURE BEATLES'SOUND!!!!!!!.......2007-05-05

This is the biggest example of the "beatlemania" fever; this album was so original (the only one album composed enterely of Lennon-McCartney songs) this was also their third album recorded and all the material are excellent and fresh, the fab four doing one of their best effords; very rock'n'roll songs like A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, I'M HAPPY JUST TO DANCE WITH YOU and TELL ME WHY, great acoustic ballads like AND I LOVE HER, IF I FELL and I'LL BE BACK, excellent pop songs like THINGS WE SAID TODAY and I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, including the country song I'LL CRY INSTEAD, and the greatest No. 1 hit song CAN'T BUY ME LOVE! this album is essential in every beatles and rock and roll collection!!

How John Lennon's confessional song became the title for a silly James Bond spoof I really don't know. The funny thing is, it works both ways--as a young man's personal statement about learning to open up to others, and as the frantic theme for an exotic espionage chase comedy starring those lovable mop-tops (this time in color). Like A Hard Day's Night, only the first "side" of this album actually contains songs from the movie--the biggest hits being the eponymous cry for assistance and "Ticket to Ride." But part 2 has a few nice tunes as well, like "It's Only Love," "I've Just Seen a Face," and a little ditty called "Yesterday." And I always love it when they do an all-out screamer like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," which sounds like John's raucous answer to Paul's "Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" vocal on Beatles for Sale. Of course, it's essential--as are all the Beatles' soundtracks (all the Beatles' albums), with the possible exception of Yellow Submarine. --Jim Emerson

Great album; wanted to straighten out a few things for other reviewers........2007-06-14

First off, this is not the Beatles' best ablum, even from this period. There are good songs (Help!, The night Before, Yesterday, It's Only Love, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, etc.) But I really came here to clarify things for an other reviewer who was wondering why their "ORIGINAL" LP track listing differed from that on this CD. This CD is the original British release, on the Parlaphone label, approved by the Fabs themselves. As such it is the only version that I, or any other self-respecting Beatle fan/purist, will accept or call real. The other reviewer's LP was obviously Capitol's US issue. It featured a different track listing, including incidental music from the film, rather than sticking with the UK's formula of 'Soundtrack side', featuring Beatle tunes from the film, and non-soundtrack side, featuring more Beatle songs recorded at the time. If that review or any other should, for some absurd, unthinkable reason, want the US releases, all they need do is buy the Captiol Albums Volumes 1 & 2. There they will find the albums Meet The Beatles, The Beatles' Second Album, Something New, Early Beatles, Beatles' 65, Beatles VI, and the versions of this and various other albums up through Rubber Soul, all in the way they remember them. For the rest of us- those with any apprecation for artistic domain/integrity- these British, ORIGINAL, REAL, AUTHENTIC versions will do just nicley. Thank you very much!

Good, but not great.......2007-06-12

This is a good album, but it is nowhere close to "Rubber Soul," the other Beatles Album I own (I also own "Love," and "Beatles 1," but those were put together by record companies using some of their best hits). Most people seem to agree with me- The first seven songs on "Help!" are very good, but the next seven after that are "meh" (Yes, I am the same kid who wrote that review in the Rubber Soul Section, and no, my parents are nopt helping me with this one either....let's just say I barley missed the age cutt-off).

I like three of the songs on the second half of the album. These songs are "It's Only Love," "You like Me Too Much," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy (which the Beatles didn't even write)." The other four are mediocre at best.

I give this album four stars because of the outstanding first seven songs (which were in the movie, as you probably know). "The Night Before,' and "You're Going to Lose That Girl" especially stand out in my mind.

As for calling this the "Transitional Album," I think that title more belongs to "Rubber Soul," but you can see shades of "Norwegian Wood" in both "It's Only Love" and "You've Got To Hide You're Love Away," so I see why people ar saying that.

Overall this is a good album, but if you are looking for a good Rock & Roll Album by The Beatles (as opposed to a slower one released in 1967 or later), I would suggest "Rubber Soul" ahead of "Help!"

Their transition album.......2007-06-10

While I have always enjoyed this album, while never holding it as a top favorite, lately I've come to feel that it's not quite a 5-star effort. It's a very good and solid pop/rock album, though overall not something that's a top-notch classic or indispensible. Taken as a whole, this collection of songs aren't incredibly memorable or deep. For me personally, it doesn't wear as well over too many listenings in a short period, compared with how I can easily play an album like 'Revolver,' RS, or AHDN twice or even more in a row, or once every day, and not get tired of it nearly that soon.

All that said, though, there is quite a bit going for this album. It begins with a burst of energy with the first note of the title track, one of only two songs (the other being "SFF") which John felt qualified as honest songs he'd written, songs which were deeply autobiographical on such a deep level. The album is peppered with other nice little rockers, such as "Ticket to Ride" (considered by some to be the closest thing to heavy metal in 1965) and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" (though it's a rather odd selection for the closing track). This is really their transitional album, what with a combination of songs in their established style (wild energetic rock and well-crafted pop songs) and ones showing some more experimentation, maturity, and complexity, harbingers of things to come from RS forward, such as the beautiful haunting "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," the folksy "I've Just Seen a Face," and "It's Only Love" (lame lyrics or not, it does have a very pretty melody and very neat sounds). And though they might not be as essential or high-quality as some of their other pop love songs, "The Night Before," "Another Girl," and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" are all catchy fun tunes, showing a more mature side of love and relationships than an earlier song such as "All My Loving" or "Love Me Do." Of the two George songs, my favorite is "I Need You"; I've always loved this song and found it to really tug at the heartstrings, even though it's no "Within You Without You" or "Something." If I had to pick the weakest song on here, it would probably be "You Like Me Too Much" or "Tell Me What You See," though I don't find any of these songs to be sub-par except when compared to their other songs from this era. (And I'm sorry, but I've never cared for "Yesterday.")

In spite of the album not quite stacking up against some of the others in their catalogue, it's still nothing to sneeze at, as a transitional album or just as an album in general, and it's still a good sight better, quality-wise and consistency-wise, than most other albums from 1965. And while one could do a lot worse, and as well-crafted as it is, it's not an album I'd recommend as the most ideal first Beatles' album.

Yes! It's among the Beatles' best!.......2007-05-16

I am a huge Beatles fan - have been since seeing them on the Sullivan show at age 11. But I couldn't afford more than a couple of the albums when I was a kid. So it was a real treat for me to start getting all of the CD's as an adult and playing them for my kids. Indeed, in the car, pretty much the _only_ music that my wife, my three kids (at that time - grade school, junior high, high school) and I could agree on were the Beatles. And while we listened to nearly all the Beatles albums, the one that we kept coming back to as the all around favorite, was, oddly enough, "Help."

I realized then that "Help" stands as the culmination of the early Beatles - it contains simple Beatles songs honed to perfection - it's appeal is very simple: great songs, great singing and great production. Next would come "Rubber Soul" and the start of a incredible new era.

The Who's mighty catalog of beautiful, poignant, and often silly pop songs bashed out with Cassius Clay finesse has suffered in the past at the hands of multiple, butcher-shop best-ofs and horrible packaging. But this thrilling band--undeniably one of ye classicke rocke's greatest--gets the career-spanning entry-point compilation it deserves with the double-disc Ultimate Collection. The songs included here are no-brainers, for the most part--if they aren't huge hits like "My Generation," "I Can See for Miles," or "Baba O'Riley," they're long-standing fan favorites such as "Boris the Spider," "Pure and Easy," and "Squeeze Box." And while this reviewer wishes different songs were chosen from Tommy, and more than one tune was gathered from their arguably finest (and definitely silliest) album, The Who Sell Out, this record really isn't for fans (aside from the total trainspotter types) but for newcomers. --Mike McGonigal

Very good introduction to one of the best Rock bands in the world - ever!.......2007-06-05

I must admit that one of my greatest mistakes as a Rock music fan, was missing to follow the career of The Who until TOMMY was issued as a movie (1975). Since then, I found that The Who is such a great British Rock band and a landmark in the story of Rock music, in the same level of the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin or other magnificent British Rock packs (Yes, ELP, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc.).
I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!

This Is Real Music........2007-05-19

The Who are one of the top 5 greatest rock groups ever. Thats just not debatable. Listen to this collection and you will see why they are now legends of music. There have been many greatest hits albums for The Who because they have made so many classics. But this one beats all the other ones by far. It's got everyone of there gigantic hits and every cult-fan favorite. Boris The Spider and Eminence Front were not big hits, but they are still very popular among Who fans(me being one of them). And then you have all the basics: Baba O'Riley,Long Live Rock,Who Are You,My Generation,Pinball Wizard and many more. Overall, this is 35 songs of rock greatness. There will never be another group like The Who. They changed the face of music. Just listen to this CD and you will feel better. You will just feel happier. Long Live The Who!

A Real Compact Disc Of Greatest Hits.......2007-07-31

This one is pretty good compared to a few other "Best Of" issues. Still a good one for the casual fan but by no means a substitute for a REAL best of collection (save that for "This Is The Moody Blues", Anthology & Gold). If your not sure about The Moody Blues & want just a solid collection on one CD, this one is the ticket.

The Best of the Moody Blues.......2007-07-08

This is truly "The Best" of the Moody Blues!! It brought the 60's & 70's back to me. I always loved their music. Great dancing music,wonderfully put together. I highly recommend this music for us ,"old hippies", and others who appreciate well performed music.

Best Compilation Available.......2007-06-20

It is so hard to create a CD that has the "best" Moody Blues songs, because you inevitably have to leave something out. The only thing I would have changed about this album, however, is I would have omitted "Go Now" and included "Driftwood." Then this would be perfect. Nevertheless, it's pretty close!

More complete than "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" :).......2007-06-18

"The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Best Of" for short, in my review) is probably the most complete single CD collection of Moody Blues hits and classics to date ... A fine choice of tracks featured on this collection, and I love the album cover (The most recent version featuring the dove and the starry night-time sky) ... Looks like the cover of a movie soundtrack! :)

First time that "Go Now" is featured on a Moody Blues best of compilation, isn't it? I agree with those who felt that this song was out of place on this release, compared to the rest of the songs, but no big deal ... The sound quality in the mastering/re-mastering is pretty good for a mono sound recording.

It's a shame that the alternate mix of "Tuesday Afternoon," from the 2006 Deluxe Edition SACD release of "Days Of Future Passed," wasn't discovered at the time of the making of "Best Of." While the stereo separation wasn't so hot, the mix featured a clean ending to the song, featuring an extra bar of the instrumentation and Justin Hayward chanting, and without any orchestra added, too. No big deal, once again, but such a mix would have made "Best Of" unique, just to acquire a different mix of the song. On this "Best Of" edit, turn the volume to your stereo system all the way up, during the fadeout, and you will hear a quick burst of the strings from the orchestra on the very last note of the song, just before the tune is completely faded out ... Something amusing to note, when it came to attempting to fade out "Tuesday Afternoon" before the orchestra took over the remainder of the song. :)

Before this non-orchestral version of "Nights In White Satin" made an appearance on "Best Of," it was previously featured on the 1985 compilation "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Voices," for short) ... The sound quality is really good on this mix. It's loud and crisp, plus the sound quality sounded magnificent for the mix on "Voices," at a time before the remastered CD's came out!

The mix of "Ride My See-Saw," also taken from "Voices," returns here ... Notice how this mix fades out several seconds earlier than the mix from "Legend Of A Band" ("Legend," for short). On that release, The Moodies chant "Ride My See-Saw" three times, as the song fades out, but the mix featured on "Best Of" (And all future compilation mixes of "See-Saw") cuts the tune short right on the very last chant of "See-Saw," so it sounds like "See-Sss" ... Just another little something I couldn't help but notice, as I raised the volume to catch the fadeout! :) In that case, I would rather the record company selected the "Legend" mix. It featured a more professional fadeout.

I guess for those who couldn't stand the orchestral remakes of both "Question" and "Isn't Life Strange," from "Legend," "Best Of" makes things right by giving the fans the originals. :)

When the earlier version of "Best Of" was released, it featured the "Time Traveller" ("T.T.," for short) edit of "The Story In Your Eyes." When the more recent version was released (featuring the different album cover), there was a great improvement, as the single version of "Story" was substituted (Previously found on "Legend," and later appearing on "Anthology" and "Gold"), which was about twelve seconds longer than the "T.T." mix. The CD booklet even changed the running time of the track, on the later edition! :)

"Best Of" features the single version of "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)," with the loud crashing drums in the intro, not the cross fade from "When You're A Free Man," as heard on "Seventh Sojourn" and the edit job on "Legend." This mix previously appeared on "Voices" and "T.T."

The mix of "Blue World" was taken from "T.T." You can tell when raising the volume during the fadeout, as the edit features the ending to "Blue World" cross faded with the sound of the synthesizers that open up "Sitting At The Wheel!" Here, the sound is cut short, as the tune fades out. It's too bad that "Best Of" didn't feature the original mix of "Blue World" from "The Present," for something refreshing, as the mix chosen here was a carbon copy of the "T.T." mix.

The remaining songs are the same as their original versions and those that appeared on "T.T." I also agree with the opinions on excluding the Justin Hayward only tracks, "Blue Guitar" and "Forever Autumn," from "Best Of," since none of the other Moody Blues performed on either track. On the up side, though, both songs are beautiful, brilliant, well done, and just as enjoyable as any Moody Blues tune. I don't mind the appearances of these two songs on the future compilations, though, as most of them were 2-disc CD collections, anyway. My personal alteration for "Best Of" would have been to replace the Justin Hayward tracks with the awesome "The Other Side Of Life," which was one advantage "Legend" had over this release. No biggie, yet again. Just a fantasty concept I had for "Best Of." :)

What I like more about "Best Of" than "Voices" is that there is more song variety and a bigger track listing here. True, "Voices" had an advantage over this release with classic songs like "Never Comes The Day," "After You Came," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker," but I prefer a collection that is able to utilize as much CD space as possible. My all time favorite single Moody Blues compilation, however, is "Legend." True, "Legend" has a shorter track list than "Best Of," but I enjoy the former collection because it includes the rare orchestral remakes of "Isn't Life Strange" and "Question," which are difficult to come across, these days. Also, I prefer the full, orchestral versions of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin," also found on "Legend." Plus, like I mentioned above, "Legend" features "The Other Side Of Life," as well as a properly faded out mix of "Ride My See-Saw." Still any Moody Blues compilation is a winner, in my book, and all of the songs on "Best Of" are some of the best The Moodies have got ... Just listen for yourself! :)

One more thing. Here's something really bizarre that I've discovered, in regard to the earlier version of "Best Of" ... I used to have a copy of the earlier version, and there is one point in each of the following songs where the songs go from stereophonic sound into mono for one second: "I'm Just a Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)" (Right after the first time The Moody Blues sing this line), "The Voice" (At the beginning, when the synthesizers begin to fade in ... Both versions of this release have it), "Your Wildest Dreams" (After the second set of verses, when they sing "Once upon a time in your wildest dreams," also featured on the mix from "The Universal Masters Collection: Classic Moody Blues"), and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" (Right on the chorus, following the verse that begins with, "The words that I remember..."). Check this out with your headphones on, if you own a copy of the earlier edition of "Best Of!" :)
