    Album Description

    New York City during the mid-1990s was a hotbed of Irish-American culture. And, in the midst of that atmosphere, Four to the Bar's live shows were the stuff of legend. To this day, Craic on the Road is the band's only authorized live recording.

    In its 11/2/1994 introduction to the album, the Irish Voice noted "the infectious energy of the band's performances, during which, it would seem, virtually anything can happen. Spontaneous, rhythmic hairpin turns will appear in the midst of a traditional Celtic jig or reel; lead singer David Yeates might take his bodhran out for an impromptu sprint atop the bar counter.

    "Not surprisingly, like other artists who have built their reputation out of providing outstanding live entertainment, Four to the Bar was besieged by demand for a live recording. On June 16, 1994 at Sam Maguire's Pub in the Bronx, with the help of the 400-or-so fans in attendance, Four to the Bar addressed that demand. Craic on the Road is the result.

    "The album's 11 tracks pay cheerful tribute to the rich musical heritage of Irish folk from which the band springs. The recurring themes that form the foundations of "Irish music" are all here--emigration and fortune-seeking (on "Murshin Durkin"), the trials of courtship (on "Mr. Maguire"), and, of course, the culture's enduring fascination with drink (on just about everything else).

    "On the more serious side, the haunting "Germany" is a widow's keening lament for the husband she has lost in another man's war, and serves as a dramatic preface to the album's most pleasant surprise, a inspired version of early-60s folk legend Phil Ochs' "I Ain't Marching Anymore," in which the band turns Ochs' defiant prophecy into an exuberant call for an end to all war.

            Congratulations! You are showing some interest in music that is truly unique and musicians who play because if they didn't they might spin off this planet.

            With this album Savage Aural Hotbed leave any notion of convention behind and create a swirling, heady and potent mix of jazz, drum-n-bass, Japanese tribal drumming, haunting chants and growls and industrial (complete with sawblade cymbals, grinders, drills, metal pipes, sledgehammers and lunchpail percussion) that is sure to enthrall, despite the fact that guitars will make no appearance here.

            This entire album is worth it entirely for opener 'Nein,' which starts off on a jazz trip with the bass leading the way on a winding path. Soon the drums get restless and start asking, 'Are we there yet?' So the drums start leading the way pretty fast, but they're drums so they're heavy and they get tired quickly, so they pull up a little short of the end. But the good thing is they get a fantastic second wind right after they stop, so it's an all-out sprint to the finish line, dragging the bass and the instruments' human slaves in tow with the ambient hum above beckoning like a Siren. It's a seriously captivating 10 minutes, and it's pretty much why I rate this album a four.

            Not to say it's the only good track on this album. The sheer elasticity of 'Musclewire' is amazing. 'Chutes and Ladders, with its propulsive percussion and curious introduction of completely indescribable found sounds, is wild, aggressive and impressive. Give 'Earth' a little while and it gets very ehtereal somehow; 'Bong Hits at the Great Pyramid' showcases SAH's mastery of ultra-complicated layered beats.

            Savage Aural Hotbed make art as music as art; their live shows are read to be multimedia art exposes in which the band's exploration of urban landscapes is as much about the culmination of that exploration as what the group breaks, saws or sets afire on stage along the way there.

            I'm sure anything they put on an album can't really recapture just how intense this kind of performance would be in person, but Savage Aural Hotbed at least give a glimpse into the shed on this album.

            Decidedly different from most other stuff around. SAH is essentially drum/bass, (major emphasis on the former) some rather crunchy digital samples, and best of all: Power Tools! Yes that's right, you get to hear a musical disk-grinder, circular saws, and may other tools being used in ways their manufacturers never intended and are sure to void the warranty. Based on Japanese Taiko drumming, it is not the simple and annoying BigBeat techno style, it is much more elaborate and stylized, using complexity of rhythm and precession drumming (yes, it is done by actual humans!) over the same old more-speed-and-volume we've seen one too many times. If you can see them live, DO IT!

                  This CD is by far the finest Hip-Hop recording I have encountered. General Monk is a highly skilled musical producer who expresses the heart and soul of the Hip-Hop generation by brilliantly weaving deep philosophical lyrics with complex and engaging musical arrangements. General Monk is definitely an up and coming artist who will inspire listeners for years to come--the CD is a great buy!
