Sound quality is equal to that of the Rhino collection and almost the same song listing. No Notes, no chart info as the Rhino, but if you just want the music, buy it. The Stereo versions are on the Collectables C.D and sound very different from the mono

Eye-popping stereo masters from the King vaults.......2005-09-28
Collectables serves up twenty-five R&B sides from the vaults of King Records, with twenty in crisp true stereo (all but tracks 2, 3, 18, 19, 25). Though stereo in this case is mostly 2-track, there's no doubting that the separation provides greater fidelity than previous mono reissues. On the other hand, the original stereo tapes are disconcerting for anyone weaned on the original hot mono masters mixed for AM radio. The tracks here focus on the years 1959 through 1963, thus failing to include seminal earlier sides like "Work With Me Baby" and "Sexy Ways," but featuring career highlights "The Twist, "Teardrops on Your Pillow" and "Finger Poppin' Time." The scant liner notes make reference to a second Collectables disc that features the earlier work, but it's either out of print, or was never issued; the classic '54 sides can be found on several other imprints, including out-of-print discs from Rhino ("Sexy Ways: The Best of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters") and See For Miles ("The EP Collection... Plus"). Given the lack of earlier material, and the head-turning stereo mixes, this probably isn't the best place to start as a one-disc overview, but for anyone who loves Ballard's music, this is a must-have. Hank and The Midnighters Do The Real Thing.......2005-04-09
For those of you who like rhythm and blues, the real stuff, this is a motherlode. Hank who as usual never got his proper shot at fame or radio play even with The Twist is a fantastic bridge between the doo-wop crooners the blues shouters and the so-called novelty performers. He's got threads that run into territory inhabited by James Brown, Jackie Wilson and even Joe Turner. There's even some quasi-gospel with Rain Down Tears. It's all here in one big great party record. And for those who are coming into this late, the Twist/Continental Walk/Coffee Grind and Hoochie Coochie were all popular dances where I grew up. It's great to hear them all again. Then there's Hank's radio records (AM radio, that is)like Let's Go ( a wonderful vocal performance..listen to him sing/say "and go where it is...up on the hill"!)
It's just a great recording. And as the other reviewers have said, you are instantly taken to a social hall/juke joint/union hall (Hank mentions one!) where Hank and the Midnighters surely had their best shiny suits, pompadours, gold teeth and well-shined shoes. Get this, and enjoy!
(PS: If there's some stuff about "voting buttons under this review
< I didn't type it. It's some kind of Amazon virus.)

The original Bad Boys Of Rock and Roll.......2002-03-20
Whenever I listen to Hank and The Midnighters I'm in for a treat of good soulful, sweaty, funky R&B from the 50's and early 60's. For some reason when I hear these cats sing it transforms me to a down south hole in the wall juke joint( circa 1961 ) with fish frying in the kitchen and bar b que ribs being served off a grill out back and the whole place is full of cigarette smoke and tight red dress coca cola bottle shaped women. That's a darn good feelin for me for I grew up in places like that down south and Hank Ballard was always on the jukeboxes. Sometimes he would have 5 or 6 hits on the jukebox alone at one time. Hank had some of the most danceable R&B of the early 60's like "The Hoochie Coochie Coo", "Let's go,Let's go,Let's go, "Finger Poppin Time", "Nothing but good", "The Coffee Grind", and a smooth belly rubber called "Teardrops on your letter". In my opinion there was no "King" of Rock n Roll-instead their were "Kings" of Rock nRoll and Hank was one of those Kings and still is. So I think I'll go put me some ribs on the grill and pop open a cold one and listen to my Hank Ballard and The Midnighters cd-talk at cha later cats! Keep Rockin and a rollin
Explosive!.......2001-11-26
For years the owners of the King catalog have been assembling Hank Ballard CDs and while some of the later ones have been an improvement, most of what's out there is a lesson in how not to produce a CD. It wasn't until Rhino did some work with the major King label artists that some of this material became available in a quality piece, although Rhino's track selection was not what it could have been. See For Miles from the U.K. has also brought to market some quality CDs with wider repertoire. Recently, the standard-bearer of reissues, Ace Records of the U.K., has given King material its due with some excellent CDs. Now, from where some past experiences may lead you to think otherwise, comes Collectables Records with a Hank Ballard/Midnighters collection that goes where no King material has been before. For the first time, many of the hit singles (all but 2,3,18,19,25) are presented in stereo! Ace's collection did have a few stereo tracks but not of charting singles and did little to lead anyone to expect much more. What's equally astonishing is that it has taken all these years to unearth these recordings. It needs to be noted that some, if not all, of these stereo versions appear to be of the primitive binaural type but even with the tricky two-channel balancing, the sound stage explodes with these tunes. Another reassuring thing about these tracks is the fact that they were mastered by the well-respected Little Walter DeVenne. As to be expected, purists may object to these stereo versions but one listen to "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" and you can't not be blown away by the new life given these 40-year-old classic rockers. This collection is limited to the King recordings of the Midnighters with Hank Ballard (1959-63) and contains within its 25 tracks all their charted a-sides during that period. The four-page liner notes booklet is brief but informative. If you're a fan of these tunes, and providing you're not a mono-purist, even if you own other Ballard/Midnighter CDs you will be jumping with this one.

Usually confined to the footnotes as the writer and originator of "The Twist," Ballard was in fact a key proto-rock & roller. His early-'50s hits like "Sexy Ways" and "Work with Me Annie" were not only so transparently libidinous that they made double-entendre into single- entendre, but were the very pinnacle of guitar-driven R&B. After several fallow years, Ballard returned in 1959 with "The Twist" followed by a string of wonderfully engaging R&B romps like "Finger Poppin' Time" and "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go," and near-soul ballads like "Teardrops on Your Letter." He really only had one groove, but it was a very, very good one. --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
1990 Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.......2004-11-25
They say Dick Clark once referred to a song by this artist as "another nasty Hank Ballard song". Even so Clark had Ernie Evans do a cover version of Hank's song, "The Twist" two years after Hank did it. (Clark's then-wife had Evans change his name to Chubby Checker (as in Fat(s) Domino, get it?) The rest is history. Hank Ballard was born John Kendricks (related to Eddie of the Temptations? Both were from Detroit). His group, the Midnighters, started out without Hank as the Royals and a couple of years later Hank replaced another lead singer. The group had been first discovered by Johnny Otis, another famous name in rock and roll history. At one time the Royals had members Levi Stubbs (who would front The Four Tops for about 50 years) and the legendary Jackie Wilson. While much black music had clear but subtle references to sex, Hank's "Work With Me Annie" and "Annie Had a Baby" were more blatant and were rarely played on the radio They had a number of more conventional hits back to back in the early 60s but faded after that. I saw Hank Ballard at a New Year's Eve party as the main attraction about 1976; his wife I heard had helped him reinvigorate his career. You'll find all of his best on this package which I recommend. I still remember the thrill of first hearing that opening guitar riff on "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go". You'll enjoy this one. Hank Ballard passed away in 2003. He was 76.
Great r&b group, with lot'd of blues feeling, and swing!.......2004-05-21
This music falls between 50's R&B, jump blues, and r&r. In any case the stores usuually keep his music in the blues section, and that may be the best description of this appealign msuic. This music can be danced to in jitterbig style, and can be lindy hopped to as well.
Ballard has a sassy, and smooth voice, that is very appealing, band features sax, and it swings, jumps and rocks pretty hard. Appealing backup and group vocals are also featued, byt Hank is always the main vocie and star.
A very appeling group and if you liek earlier groups like Jouis Jordan & His Tymphani 5, or Wynonnie Harris, you're sure to love what foloowed in the 50's, with Hank & The Midnighters. Those wh ohave an appreciation for rockabilyl, wil lalso enjoy this cd, or thsoe whp like to like in the 50's tetro lifestyle, an exellent cd that featured Ballards humor and bigegst hits, and includes all the "Annie" songs which were in some ways parodies to the "Roll With Me Henry" song covered by Etta James.
GRAET CD!
Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go..........2003-09-01
Hank Ballard was one of the greats of the 50's R&B era. I saw him here in Denver, Colorado in 1985 at the Fairmont Hotel. I almost fainted when I saw him in the lobby - and when the show started, he was impeccably dressed in "all" white, right down to his socks! When you hear his music, you can't help but get up and do the "pony" or the twist" or do a slow drag to "Stay By My Side"...I was sad to hear of his death earlier this year. He is truly missed by me...
RAW PERKY RTHYM AND BLUES AT ITS BEST!.......2003-07-22
IF HANK BALLARD DID NOT MAKE YOU WANT TO GET UP AND DANCE IN THE 50'S THAN I DON'T KNOW WHO COULD BESIDES LITTTLE RICHARD,JACKE WILSON, BILL HALEY AND JERRY LEE LEWIS! WAIT TO YOU HEAR THE ORIGINAL TWIST AND "THERE'S A THRILL UP ON THE HILL..LET'S GO, LET'S, LET'S GO".HANK BALLARD WAS VERY DARING WITH HIS LYRICS AND HIS MUSIC IS JUST OUT OF THIS WORLD.I REALLY LOVE THIS TERRIFIC ALBUM AND IT STILL MAKES ME WANT TO GET UP AND DANCE.HANK HAD HIS OWN STYLE AND DISTINCTIVE VOICE.THIS IS RTHYM AND BLUES IN THE RAW!THERE'S NOTHING BORING ABOUT HANK BALLARD BELIEVE YOU ME! BUY THIS C.D. AND YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!
Essential for the R&B and oldies collector alike........2003-06-13
If you're thinking about getting a taste of some R&B vocal groups, this is an essential alblum. I can honestly listen to this one all the way through. I must admit I like the first half of the alblum a little better. Also, the very racy song 'Annie had a baby' is included here as well. There are plenty more hard rockers included as well. For the oldies buff, the ORIGINAL (and I think - better) "Twist" make this one worth picking up. The sound quality is really good too!

Album Description
Hank Ballard's place in Rock and Roll history was cemented with the sexually explicated lyrics and gospel rhythms of his songs. Ballard with his group the Midnighters recorded several hits in the early fifties. "Work With Me Annie" and "Annie Had A Baby" both sold over a million copies even though they were banned. These amongst other jumping R&B and sweet ballads are included on this Intro. Hank Ballard was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, a well-deserved honour for this immediately recognisable and idiosyncratic front-man who died of throat cancer on March 2, 2003.

Customer Reviews:
hank ballard is awesome.......2006-04-30
As much of the midnighters titles bought for my collection over the years, I never heard some of these titles. They blew me away!
Best Ballard/Midnighters compilation.......2001-06-22
Although this collection consists of Hank Ballard and the Midnighters' dance-oriented tunes, as such it represents a fairly complete "greatest hits" compilation. Anchoring the 24 tracks of dance tunes are their biggest hits including "The Twist", "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" and "Finger Poppin' Time". There are many other Midnighters discs available but most of them are of mediocre quality at best. Ace records has taken these tunes and produced the best sounding collection of this material to be found. There are even a number of tracks in true stereo (15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24) which is a real rarity with King (the Midnighters' original label) material. If you are considering one Midnighters' disc, this is the one to get. If you're a fan of their music, this is a worthwhile upgrade to nearly any previous reissue of Midnighters' music.
THE ORIGINAL DIRTY DANCER!.......2000-11-07
Almost every teen ager in the fifties loved the hot R&B dance music. The personifacation of "dirty dancin'" came when Hank Ballard's Midnighters sang those double entendre lyrics to classics like "Work With Me Annie" and "Annie Had A Baby". This fabulous compilation produced by the Masters at ACE RECORDS has made these classic dance cuts come alive with new vibrance. These fabulous recordings have been restored to flawless perfection. Every cut on this CD is fabulous. The original "The Twist" is the best I've ever heard it. Along with "Henry's Got Flat Feet", "Finger Poppin' Time" and "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go", all sound the best I've ever heard. I've heard the "Twist" thousands of times and on this CD, I hear things I've never heard before. The durums, the backup singers and the saxaphones are in your face. It's fabulous. If you want to take a trip back to the good time days of rock'n roll and r&b. Take my advice, this one is well worth your time and money.
