At his best, the Kinks' Ray Davies is one of the cleverest writers in pop, managing to wring universal appeal from a wholly and unapologetically English perspective. Most of the artists featured on This Is Where I Belong are American, and most acquit themselves admirably. Hosannas must be directed at Fountains of Wayne's giddy reading of "Better Things," Cracker's rousing "Victoria," an intricate working of "Art Lover" by Lambchop, and a spectacular, turbocharged "Who'll Be the Next in Line" by Queens of the Stone Age. The decision to close the album with Davies himself performing one of his finest songs--"Waterloo Sunset"--with one of his able heirs, Damon Albarn of Blur, is a neat touch. --Andrew Mueller

A Kurious Kollection of Kinks' Klassics.......2007-04-14
As Ray Davies notes in his self-penned liner notes, "tribute albums are usually conceived after the composer has 'passed.'" Of course the long-time Kinks frontman has not passed, but his legacy has certainly passed the test of time. As of this writing, these songs date back forty years--and even the most recent (""Better Things" and "Art Lover" from 1981's GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT) are 25 years old. With the release of Ray's first new album in years (2006's OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES), I finally picked this album up last week (though it was initially released in 2002).
It's a somewhat eclectic collection of songs. There are a couple of U.S. hits ("A Well Respected Man" and "Who'll Be the Next in Line") and U.K hits ("Waterloo Sunset" and "Victoria"), but there are no covers of their early hits like "You Really Got Me" or "All Day and All of the Night." Instead, most of the artists tend to lean more toward the introspective side of Ray's songbook.
Most of the artists tend to remain fairly faithful to the original Kinks' arrangements. So when you listen to Steve Forbert do "Starstruck" or Matthew Sweet perform "Big Sky," they are certainly lovingly done, but they don't really bring anything new to the songs.
There are, however, a handful of artists who approach the songs from a new angle. For example, Josh Rouse (a native Nebraskan, by the way) gives his reading of "A Well Respected Man" a haunting quality with his delicate vocal delivery. Bluegrass veteran Tim O'Brien gives "Muswell Hillbilly" a honky-tonk treatment complete with steel guitar and fiddle.
And then there is the duet with Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Ray Davies himself on perhaps his most beautiful song, "Waterloo Sunset." This version was recorded live in 1995 for a British TV show.
Taken altogether, this is a wonderful collection of songs. It certainly offers much to enjoy for any Kinks fan, and it's encouraging to see these songs being embraced by another generation of musicians. RECOMMENDED [Running time - 50:33]
Great Songs in New Versions!.......2006-11-03
This CD of new recordings of Ray Davies songs is really a pleasure to listen to. Great variety in sounds and style but great songs all the way through - though it loses a little steam towards the end.
Some tracks are very true to the original whereas others are treated in new and different ways - in some cases in very exciting ways.
The opening track "Better Days" from "Give the People What They Want" is a great song, but it always sounded a little rough and demo-like to my ears. Very interesting to learn from Davies own well-written liner-notes that it really was only demo that was included on the album. A great opener here given a power-pop treatment by Fountains of Wayne.
Steve Forbert's version of "Starstruck" from Village Green P.S. is just as great. Musically more polished than the opener, but Forbert's raw vocals give this fine song a new edge.
"Stop Your Sobbing" is given an acoustic treatment by Jonathan Richman. Very nice, which is also Bebel Gilberto's version of "No Return", which is probably the only bossa-nova song Davies ever wrote. Ray reveals that the song was written with Bebel's mother Astrud ( the girl from Ipanema ) in mind.
"A Well Respected Man" originally was a raw half-acoustic recording. This new version by Josh Rouse has been given a completely different more polished feel - the satire may not be quite as obvious as on the original but great to hear the song interpreted so differently.
"Victoria" is probably too true to the original "Arthur" version to make it really interesting.
"Who'll Be the Next in Line" is good but no more.
Another stand-out is the overlooked gem "Big Sky" from Village G.P.S. Though this new recording has been given an almost identical arrangement, the vocals are more up front than on the original which is great. Though the original is great too, I always felt it deserved a better recording.
Lambchop's version of another "Give the People What They Want" song is very different from the original. Darker and slower. Maybe this version does quite capture the ambiguity of the the Kinks'version.
"Picture Book" is another gem from the Village G.P.S. - one the greatest albums of all time - check out the the deluxe version and enjoy the original along a lot equally great out-takes. This new version is charming and fine!
If you didn't know better you would have thought "Muswell Hillbilly" was an old Hank Williams song; at least that's what Tim O'Brian makes the song sound like.
From "Lola Versus Powerman" comes another overlooked song - I do remember the Kinks played the song in their 1974 Denmark tour alongside their Preservation songs. This new version comes close to the original; the singer even sounds like Davies at times - a fine track.
"Till the End of the Day" is a great rocker but Fastball really don't add anything to it; except maybe make you want to hear the original again.
The title track was originally only released as the B-side to an obscure 1967 European single. Ron Sexsmith new version almost sounds like a 1967 recording too. Solid, but no more.
From "Face to Face" comes the oriental inspired "Fancy" - one on Davies most personal early songs, but also one of the least catchy.
Ray Davies himself along with Damon Albarn closes the album with a live version of "Waterloo Sunset" - a song that has been called the greatest single of the late 1960's.
A worthy tribute to one of the finest songwriters of rock during 4 decades.
Ray Davies for now people.......2005-01-26
It seems to be a requirement for music snobs to have their favorite neglected genius, the one who wrote better songs than Lennon and/or McCartney and/or both but never got the credit he or she deserved. Typically most of said snobs tend to pick Lou Reed. Well, I say good choice, no harm in that one, but I am going to have to go with Ray Davies. Sorry Lou. Ray's songs seem a bit more universal, a bit more touching, a bit easier to connect to. As much as I love "Heroin" and "Sweet Jane," I more often find myself with "Big Sky" or "This is Where I Belong" on the player. I guess it's just a matter of taste.
When I discovered this compilation, the name tipped me off that it would be good. If Ryko had called it "All Day and All of the Night," for example, or "You Really Got Me," it would have conjured up images of Van Halen or some other inane, dated hard-rock group grinding out yet another cover of the earliest stuff. "This is Where I Belong" is not only a great song from the classic mid-period years but it is also an obscurity. Somebody knew what they were doing over at Ryko, so I had to invest the $14 it cost at the time to find out whether it was any good.
And it was. These artists show exactly why Ray's music is so special...it is completely timeless. The glory of "Big Sky," my favorite Kinks song, is captured magnificently here by Matthew Sweet. Jonathan Richman shows us exactly why "Stop Your Sobbing" hasn't lost any of its charm- its simplicity allows the message- one of coping with sorrow of any kind- to come through clearly. Fountains of Wayne take another obscurity, "Better Things," and maintain its feel as a powerpop gem while making sound like it was written yesterday. None of the wit or wisdom is lost in any of these translations. Yeah Cracker doesn't sound like Cracker here but so what, you want to hear Cracker in their purest form then put on "Kerosene Hat." Nothing on here disappoints.
A worthy complilation for one of the best songwriters ever. It may even be desert island stuff for me.
Worthy tribute.......2004-10-03
I keep going back to this CD, again and again. A must-have for anyone who appreciates Ray Davies. A couple of duds (Josh Rouse, Jonathan Richman) are overwhelmed by awesome covers. Some performers opt for straight-rocking versions (Queens of the Stone Age on "Who'll be the Next in Line?," Fastball on "Till the End of the Day" and Cracker on "Victoria"). "Better Things" is a great opener, an upbeat way to start any day. Matthew Sweet turns in an epic "Big Sky." The haunting "Art Lover" as done by Lambchop is one of the most arrestingly disturbing yet poignant songs ever written. Ron Sexsmith captures the longing tone of Davies in the title track -- which says so much in so few words about Ray's romantic attachment to one's physical place in life. The arrangement (with producer Martin Terefe's looping bass) displays power in simplicity. And the closing live version of "Waterloo Sunset"...well, this one song earned Ray Davies a place in popular music's hall of fame.
A MUST FOR RAY & DAVE DAVIES FANS.......2004-01-28

A really mixed bag... Very Good and Very Fake.......2006-08-19
John Denver was a really complicated guy. Real highs and abyssmal lows. His music is already beautiful, so if you also cringe when you are relaxing around a campfire when the acoustic guitar appears, there are songs here to skip.
Will Oldhams' version of 'The Eagle and the Hawk' and the Red House Painters "I'm Sorry" cover the cost of admission twice over. They are the most moving songs on the album. You have to buy the album for those two songs. Brilliantly done. The Innocence Mission pulls off 'Follow Me' hauntingly well. If you have an afternoon to adjust your equalizer the Low version of 'Back Home Again' is excellent as well.
I wish I had never heard the Tarnation version of 'Leaving on a Jet Plane'. How can you make a bad song so much worse? The Rachel Haden song has an artificially sweetened bubble-gum feel with over-the-top horn that places it in a bad Japanese cartoon. The other Red House Painter's/Kozelek songs are very well done and are solid. The other songs on the album are very easy to forget. They are blown opportunities by bands that were trying to make the songs more beautiful than they already are by adding gimmicks and overproduction. There is no depth of feeling that grace the originals. If thats your thing maybe you should search out "The Boston Pops play John Denver"....
great interpreters.......2005-12-30
This quirky CD is the perfect example of the fact that there is an endless number of great songs out there in search of a great interpretation. I did not realized until listening to this CD what a beautiful song "Annie's Song" is. The music industry needs people like this-- people with great voices and interpretive talent to record the already existing great songs. It reminds me of Al Green's version of To Sir With Love. Who would have thought....
sunny days of past and present.......2005-11-04
My mother used to have a well loved and beat-up copy of a two lp john denver live album. She would always play it on saturday mornings when she was cleaning the house. I associate songs like Matthew, the Eagle and the Hawk, Poems Prayers and Promises etc. with morning sun, the smell of pine-sol and lemon pledge and my mother's strong alto pulling me into another childishly happy morning.
I discovered Mark Kozelek through his work as Sun Kil Moon. Their first album was an instant favorite. Right from track one, standing at a listening station in a Borders bookstore back home in Indiana, I knew I needed this music.
John Denver counts as a guilty pleasure for alot of people beacuse he was so resolutely uncool. He was an optimist, a new age-ey mystic AND a country flavored folk singer.
His craft though, at its height, was undeniable. His melodies are absolute human classics and his lyrics bear a soul that may not have ever been in danger of being hip but seemed genuinely good.
Kozelek and his gathered cohorts pay wonderful tribute to that fact on this sincere and fitting collection. Each song stands as a coherent interpretation and a pleasent re-invention.
This collection is likely the closest John Denver will ever get to being "hip" and perhaps he's not entirely out of place.
A somber tribute to John Denver by alternative artists.......2005-03-03
The first concert I ever went to was to see John Denver and to this day when I drive through the Rocky Mountains I have to listen to his original "Greatest Hits" album. We first heard about John Denver for writing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and singing "Take Me Home (Country Roads)," but he became identified in my mind with Colorado and "Rocky Mountain High." But there was more than the glorification of nature in his music, and my favorite John Denver songs are "Poems, Prayers and Promises" and "Rhymes and Reasons," which can certainly be accused of being more spiritual than commercial in essence.
I stumbled on "Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver" because I was going on one of my periodic searches to find interesting covers versions of songs I like and I stumbled across the Rachel Hayden cover of "Poems, Prayers and Promises" on this album. In contrast with the moody and somber approaches taken by most of the artists on this album, Hayden provides a rather perky pop take on the song, with some interesting harmonies in the chorus. It is very different, but that is what is interesting.
That approach is clear from the opening track of the album, "The Eagle and the Hawk" by Bonnie Prince Billy. The shortest of all John Denver songs, this is another personal favorite because of the guitar introduction. But Billy just sings the song a cappella in a simple haunting manner that gives you no other options but to listen to the lyrics this time around. As soon as he starts singing you know that this is a tribute album to someone who has died too song. The other defining element is that these are not artists that you would think of as being anything remotely close to John Denver. But they must have listened to him in their youth and compelled them to pay their respects to his music in their own manner.
For example, it seems the Red House Painters only sings songs of haunting sadness as a means of purging emotions, and their two tracks her are decidedly in that spirit. The sparse instrumentation and Mark Kozelek's introspective vocals emphasize the confessional aspects of "I'm Sorry." But the group relies entirely on almost wall of sound instrumentation to turn "Fly Away" into a dirge (A commentary on the circumstances of Denver's death? Perhaps). At the other end of the spectrum there is "Follow Me" by the Innocence Mission, where Karen Peris' vocals remind me of Melanie (the folk singer, not either of the Spice Girls).
Despite the often quite moody approaches often taken to Denver's songs (e.g., Low's "Back Home Again"), I think many of his fans will be open to what these artists are doing with his songs. Granted, chances are they will not find everything here to their liking. But there will be a couple of songs here that will catch their fancy. Most of these songs might be somber and moody, but they are certainly respectful and I cannot help but thinking with many of these tracks that these artists are literally performing them as if they were at the funeral (cf. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by Jason & The Scorchers or "Rocky Mountain High" by the Yonder Mountain String Band ).

I like it a lot.......2005-12-09
Despite what others may think I think it is a very enjoyable cd. Very relaxing, mature, and upbeat. I am not a jazz expert or one on Stevie Wonder and this is my first Najee cd but anyone with a musical ear will appreciate it.
His style is very suave, and the supporting instruments are very good too.
There is a lot of rhythm and soul and variation in the compilation, you can even dance to some tracks. It is far from bland, subtle at the least. I'm sure Stevie Wonder would be proud.
I especially like tracks 6,7,8,14,17.
I would certainly recommend it.
A Loving Homage to one of music's BEST ALBUMS!.......2003-07-16
Najee creates the songs from Wonder's Grammy-winning tour de force so closely that it's hard to distinguish some from their original versions. All that's needed are Stevie's vocals and harmonica. There is very little variation, with only "Sir Duke" having a jazzier take, obviously a tribute to both Wonder and Ellington.
The saxophonist/flautist is in top form here. He's not just a "black Kenny G". There is more soul and jazz in these performances than Mr. G has ever done in his long and popular career.
These "songs" are worthy to be heard!
Thanking Najee,For Giving A Tribute To Stevie Wonder2001.......2001-04-23
To whom it may concern today April 22nd 2001 I'm a long time fan of Stevie Wonder, and Najee. I just want to say Thank You for this Beautiful compact disc, that Najee, released in 1995 19 years after Stevie Wonder, released "Songs In The Key Of Life" October 1976; I like the fact that Najee, recorded this compact disc in the exact same order that Stevie Wonder, did back in 1976. Also I like the fact again that this compact disc, is all instrumental and over 60 minutes long in the duration of time. I hope that Najee, will someday maybe do a tribute to one of my favorite singer and musical genius who died way before his time on January 13th 1979. The person I'm writing about is the late great Donny Hathaway, who was 33 years old at the time of his death. Donny Hathaway's, birthday is or was October 1st 1945. I think what would be nice if either Stevie Wonder, or Luther Vandross, did the singing part of this tribute to Donny Hathaway on Najee's compact disc. I learned that Everette Harp, had Najee, helped out on Everette Harp's, tribute compact disc "What's Going On" of 1997 I like that Everette Harp, and Najee, worked together that's great to have recording proformers having a good understanding about music as a same achievement product, for the buying public like myself. I hope that Everette Harp, and Najee, will work together again in the near future. I've been a Najee, fan ever since his first album was released in 1986 to the present time 2001. As for Everette Harp,I remember when Everette Harp, was the saxophone player on the Arsenio Hall, show back in 1989 or 1990. Arsenio Hall, use to comment on Everette Harp's, long ponytail back on Arsenio Hall's, show. Well that's all for now until next time Take Care and God's Speed,Yours Truly Kevin Small,a fan of Najee, and Everette Harp, "Love,Peace&Happiness"
The Black Kenny G. Yuck.......2000-11-17
Najee is as bland as Kenny G.I wonder why on earth would he try to mess up one of the Greatest Albums ever made?i have heard Najee for years&it still puts me to sleep easily.he plays a few instruments but they lack feeling&soul.i hear he is touring with Prince now.if he does Prince Like he does on this disc then there will be alot of Sleepy heads.Elevator Music at it's most basic forum.i wish Roy Hargrove would take this Project maybe then somebody would BLow into that Horn instead of Noodle.if it weren't for this being the Album that it is i would give it a one.
Very enjoyable.......2000-07-08
Considering that I am a big fan of Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life, I found this album to be very enjoyable. Najee has done a great job with this album. I especially love his versions of Love's In Need Of Love Today, Contusion, Summer Soft, and I Am Singing. However, I am a tad disappointed with the length of Isn't She Lovely and Joy Inside My Tears(one of my favorites from the original album). The original album is composed of two discs and I can understand it if Najee had to cut the length of some of the songs to compile them onto one disc, but why cut down a classic like Isn't She Lovely? Nonetheless, this album does not have many flaws and I recommend it to all Stevie Wonder fans, especially those who loved Songs In The Key Of Life.

Amazon.com essential recording
A pretty stunning group of socially conscious performers (from Bonnie Raitt to Billy Bragg) join in tribute to the inspirational music and life of Pete Seeger on this expansive 2 CD set. The grand selection of songs is well-annotated with notes from the artists and Seeger himself about each piece and its place in the pantheon. Among the many highlights are Bruce Springsteen's heartfelt "We Shall Overcome," John Trudell's tense "Torn Flag," actor Tim Robbins's rap-like "All My Children of the Sun," and Ani DiFranco's quiet, brooding "My Name Is Lisa Kalvelage." Further listening: the Smithsonian/Folkways release of If I Had a Hammer, a remarkable collection of Seeger singing his own songs. --Michael Ruby

Great Variety and Inspirational Songs.......2007-02-26
Pete Seeger is the genuine article. A man who has devoted his life to using his gifts and talents to do his part to make the world a more humane place. His music sung by him is a unique contribution. This album combining Seeger's own voice with a fine collection of collaborators honoring him may even be better. If not better, at least more engaging when listening to the whole album thanks to the variety of voices and stylings. If you want pure Pete Seeger, he has plenty for you. If you are interested in a fresh and honest interpretation of his work, this is a good source.
What an amazing tribute..........2000-11-13
In agreeing with all the other top-star reviews in this list, I want to add that part of what makes Pete Seeger such a treasure is the timelessness of his writing. Reggae Pete? Why not! Like Shakespeare, adapting classics for modern tastes only emphasizes their universality. This tribute makes it clear that Pete's music belongs in the global culture, for all generations present and future to discover and make their own.
On a separate note, I want to direct America-centric readers to the work of Tommy Sands, a great friend of Pete's who sings the title song. North-of-Ireland Irish, Tommy follows in Pete's peace-activist footsteps, and deserves the international recognition he has received for his work... Slàinte!
Yum... whoa... WOW!.......2000-09-15
You'll hear your favorites on this album, and you'll hear songs new to you that will blow you away.
Besides being a collection of songs honoring Seeger, these are wonderful on their own. Re-release these as singles, and they will be hits in the folk-music circles, and could hold their own on some more popular stations (like Chicago's WXRT).
For me, I loved Studs Terkel reading "Blessed Be the Nation," Jackson Browne/Bonnie Raitt singing, "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," and the deeply haunting "My Father's Mansion" as sung by Billy Bragg and Eliza Carthy in a celtic flavor.
Hearing Donovan's version of "My Rainbow Race" was refreshing, and Dick Gaughan's dramatic rendering of "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" knocked my socks off. Surprising me was Tim Robbins' "All My Children of the Sun." So he can sing, too? Amazing.
Listen to Greg Brown singing "Sailing Down My Golden River." He has a Johnny Cash thing going on when he sings it, don't you think? Check it out. Very cool.
There are others, some 39 songs in all, and each I honestly liked. No duds, no "why did they put that on the album" songs.
I fully recommend this album.

EXCELLENT!!!!! I LOVE Pete Seeger!.......1999-01-05
I just heard this 2cd set and am blown away by it! I didn't realize he had written all those songs! I loved the reggae song, and all the others. I work at two libraries. One library had it, and I am going to buy this for my other library, and a copy for me, since it has all the notes from Pete and the artists who sing his songs. EVERYONE should hear this!
A Pete Seeger Feast To Carry On To The 21st Century.......1998-12-29
On first listen, the divergent arrangements and production of these Pete Seeger classics recorded by others startle. However, after a few listens I can't get enough. The folk melodies wrap around the new voices and interpretations like they should... beautiful and compelling music by the national treasure that is Pete Seeger.

Awesome guitar work.......2007-01-12
Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.
Have been loving this for over ten years!!.......2003-09-26
I bought this cassette over ten years ago (1992) when I started taking classical guitar lessons. Would listen to it on the way home from work, then had a baby nine years ago and have used it for lullaby music (works like a charm) for afternoon naps and nighttime. Still listen to it in the car when the kids fight and they mellow out instantly.
Finally buying it on CD because I think I wore a spot out on the cassette! I have listened to this masterpiece at least a thousand times and have never, ever tired of this most excellent work of art.
If you are a classical guitar fan, you will absolutely adore every single note played on this album/CD. I promise!! :)
sonic rapture..........2003-06-03
If anyone knows of a better sonically intoxicating cd than this please let me know. Possibly only Julian Bream's unreal 1982 Granados and Albeniz cd would top this one for me. Anyway just thought I would pass this thought along to anyone who may visit here. The tone is absolutely magical on this cd. This is the cd to listen to at night to chill out and get mellow while being enchanted to the max. Peace. I must go on... the tone, the tone. My god the tone.
Not just a tribute.......2001-07-31
Parkening shows how much he learned from Segovia. I have many of these pieces played by the Master. Parkening plays with a similar timbre, simlar dynamics and with a musicality just as deep as Segovia's. IF you like classical guitar you should own this one.
Wonderful, relaxing music.......2001-01-27
This cd will spend much time on my player. It is so lively, yet comforting music to listen to.
Parkening provides wonderful tribute to Segovia with Spanish compositions especially loved by the master, even some of them performed on one his Segovia's guitars.
For the classical guitar enthusiast, or just someone looking for that refreshing guitar music we here on the FM, this is a fine selection.

Stricken with Hepatitis C in April 2003 and lacking health insurance, Alejandro Escovedo has been the focus of scores of benefit concerts in Austin, Texas, and across the U.S. These 32 songs offer further aid--and a dizzying, daring appraisal of a brilliant, if commercially hard-luck, songwriter. Opening with Lucinda Williams's slurred, Spartan electric groove, the set covers the obscure ("Sacramento & Polk," in a manic paranoid take by Lenny Kaye) and the exquisite (the road-weary ballad "Thirteen Years," in a stately, aching reading by Tejano legend Ruben Ramos). Those familiar with the restless style-shifting of Escovedo's career won't be surprised by the juxtaposition of Ian Hunter's bar-band strut with the Jayhawks' psychedelic wall of delay, or Peter Case's glam garage with Bob Neuwirth's unguarded, accordion-laced sigh. Surprises include a poignant vocal turn from keyboard legend Ian McLagan, a reunited and stunningly revived Son Volt, and Escovedo himself, charging through a new tempo-twisting rocker cut just before he fell ill. There is tangible enthusiasm, even love, in the performances of these wildly diverse admirers. --Roy Kasten
Album Description

Participating artists include Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Los Lonely Boys, John Cale, Cowboy Junkies, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Ian Hunter and many more. The album also features a previously unreleased performance by Alejandro Escovedo.
Customer Reviews:
These artists all love Alejandro, why wouldn't you?.......2006-03-11
Maybe I'd been living under a rock or something... but I'd never heard of Alejandro Escovedo until this tribute came out. My interest was piqued by the All-Star roster of artists that performed. The first song I heard was "Paradise" by Steve Earle & Reckless Kelly. Now THAT just blew me away, so I delved farther and found a lot of great songs on this album. This all lead to buying each and evey album that Alejandro has done, including his stuff w/ Buick MacKane and True Believers. I felt as though I missed something very important up until that point. This isn't a bad place to start for those unexposed to the brilliance of the man. He can rock, he can swoon. Make you giggle, make you cry. Check this album out, then check out Alejandro's albums. You won't regret it! I swear!
"Por Vida" Rises Above the Tribute Genre.......2005-06-20
I'm skeptical of tribute albums and there are a dozen good reasons why nearly all tribute albums fail. The general rule of thumb and the best argument against tribute albums is that the original artist has already recorded the definitive version of the song. Tribute albums inevitably invite comparisons to the original versions and more often than not, come up short.
I steered clear of "Por Vida: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo" on the grounds of caveat emptor; let buyer beware of the uneven quality of most tribute albums. It was unlikely that even the most gifted interpreter would offer any fresh insights into Escovedo's soulful renditions of his own music. My curiosity finally got the best of me and I finally purchased "Por Vida" a month ago.
Alejandro Escovedo has walked a rough path as a musician since he appeared on the music scene in the Seventies. He's so uniquely talented it's diffcult to pidgeon hole and market him as an musician. Success has been within Escovedo's reach but just beyond his grasp for too many years.
Escovedo's songwriting talent and body of work is on par with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen or any other great contempory songwriters. You seldom hear Escovedo's name mentioned in the same conversation about relative merits of great comtemporary songwriters, like his noteworthy peers.
"Por Vida", as it turns out, is welcome exception to the rule of law. It is a testament to the universal nature of Escovedo's song writing and his music flatters nearly every artist on this sprawling two disc album. It's a dizzying array of styles that showcases 32 wildly varied music acts with over hundred musicians in the various bands. It's about as diverse a group of musicians as you'll ever hear including; John Cale, Lucinda Williams, Sheila E, Lenny Kaye, Calexico, Charley Musselwhite, Ian Hunter and the Mekons' Jon Langford and Sally Timms.
"Por Vida" may be only tribute genre album that delivers new rewards upon repeated playing. This tribute album is one that won't exiled to the shelf to collect dust after one or two spins. It wouldn't do justice to select two or three stellar cuts on the album, because each artist shines in the glow of Escovedo's beautiful music. Alejandro Escovedo is a songwriter for every season and every generation.
The fact that he's been stricken with often lethal Hepatitis C is yet another burden for Escovedo to carry. Escovedo, like most musicians, cannot afford the comprehensive insurance coverage to treat this deadly disease. All proceeds from this tribute album go the cost of his spiralling health care costs. Regardless of the musical merits of the album itself, it's about the best reason I can think of to purchase this album.
One of the best collections of covers you'll ever find.......2005-01-20
If you can't find something on this that you think is first-rate, you don't like music. There are one or two weak cuts, but the best songs here are simply amazing. The Section Quartet's take on "Crooked Frame" was a revelation. Other highlights include the John Dee Graham cover of "Helpless", Peter Case's "The End", and the Dragons' version of "Gravity". I've already bought four CDs on the basis of what I've heard on this one, and I will be buying more.
Loving Tribute to a Songwriting Great.......2004-12-25
You may wonder, who is this guy and why does he deserve a 2-CD tribute? But by the time you get halfway through the first disc, you'll wonder no more: Alejandro Escovedo is a flat-out brilliant songwriter. His music has moved through genres, without losing his sensibility for both roots-rock and his Mexican heritage. Suffice to say that if you like Los Lobos (even though they don't appear), you'll really enjoy this CD. In the same tradition as "Sweet Relief" (the tribute to Victoria Williams, who was stricken with MS about ten years ago), and other albums after it, this project was intended to assist Escovedo, who has hepatitis C and no health insurance. And what assistance he got: a first-rate lineup of artists, from Lucinda Williams, Son Volt and the Jayhawks to Charlie Musselwhite, Ian Hunter and John Cale. Just about everything here works very well, kicking off with Lucinda Williams' great version of "Pyramid of Tears", moving through hot property Los Lonely Boys' cover of "Castanets", and many other highlights by Cowboy Junkies, Chris Stamey, and Escovedo himself. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up (it's a bargain for a 2-CD set with nary a bad track on it). Then, if you haven't already, acquaint yourself with the original albums from this influential and gifted Mexican-American artist.
13 years.......2004-11-16
Alejandro has been writing darn good music for a long time now. Often overlooked in the mass market popularity contest of the music business, but respected by his peers. It's a great intro to some of his music, and I recommend it as such. It may be only me, but I'm a little tired of Los Lonely Boys, a better story than band, and Castenets is over played. And why did someone not cover 13 Years, one of Al's very best songs ever?

Fever: A Tribute to Peggy Lee is an album representation of the show of the same name that jazz vocalist Connie Evingson created for the Illusion Theatre in Minneapolis. It collects a variety of songs associated with Lee, from her early days with Benny Goodman ("Why Don't You Do Right") to her signature song, "Fever," to some of the many songs she wrote herself ("I Love Being Here with You," "It's a Good Day," "I'm Gonna Go Fishing," Lady and the Tramp's "He's a Tramp"). A solid vocalist, Evingson won't make anyone forget Lee, but that's not the point here. Fever is nothing less than a pleasure. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Connie delivers..........2002-09-22
Connie offers up a good selection of Peggy Lee songs on this tribute album, and puts her own spin on the songs without being disrespectful to the image or style of Lee. In short, that is what a tribute album should be all about, and Connie delivers in spades.
"Some Cats Know" is the title track of another Connie Evingson album, and again here she offers up the tune in a slow and sizzling (and sexy), way. "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" is done in a more sprightly, but no less smoky way. "I Don't Know Enough About You" is again, typical of Connie's style.
"He's A Tramp" and "Fever" are of course Peggy Lee standards. She owned these songs in a way few artists can ever hope to own a song as their signature tune. Dino had "Return to Me", for example, and it just sounds wrong coming from someone else. Connie does quite well on both tunes here, again, putting her own spin on the Lee classics while not straying too far from the sound Lee fans remember.
The only poor choice here would have to be "Is That All There Is?" Peggy Lee could make it work perfectly. I've never really cared for the song anyway, but Connie is too young, and perhaps even too innocent, to pull off the world-weary sound required for this song.
Other than that, the CD is rich with Connie's wonderful vocals, and the accompaniment is great. Don't listen to the naysayers. Try this one out.
Tribute to Miss Lee falters.......2000-08-15
Miss Evingson's lithe, restrainted, clear voice is a nice listen, but she falters in this tribute to Peggy Lee , who was a perfectionist when it came to just about everything on her recordings. Everything from the song selection to orchestrations seems off on this outing. "Is that all there is?" comes across as a plodding hokey reworking of Lee's life long question and it lacks Lee's ambivalence. "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" included here is also out of place and the Peggy-penned "I Love Being Here with You" comes complete with a clunky clarinet solo and lacks Lee's easy going sultry styling. Evingson, however, should not be faulted for paying tribute to Miss Lee, though her attempt, while admirable, doesn't measure up.
A Well-Crafted Tribute.......2000-07-28
Connie Evingson's cd, Fever, is truly a tribute to Peggy Lee that foregoes the notion of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. While not straying far from the jazz style used by Ms. Lee, Ms. Evingson puts her own stamp on these classic tunes, singing them with the high level of craftsmanship they deserve. Evingson does an excellent job in enunciating the lyric and bringing across the mood of the song whether it be soulful, sultry, or sunny. Her musicians provide excellent backing, in particular Dave Karr on the reeds.
Catch The Fever.......2000-07-28
Connie Evingson's, "FEVER", a tribute to Peggy Lee, rates a standing ovation. She has a vocal quality reminiscent of the great Miss Lee but comes forth with all the freshness and verve that this material longs for and rarely receives. If you rate Peggy Lee as "Sultry", you'll agree that Connie Evingson is "SULTRY". If you feel the "Blues" when Miss Lee sings, you'll feel the "BLUES" when Miss Evingson delivers. Sanford Moore (piano),Terry Burns(bass), Phil Hey and Nathan Norman (drums), Reuben Ristrom and Joan Griffith (guitar) and Dave Karr(reeds) obviously understand the music and how it should be played for Connie Evingson's performance. They are top rate players as is Miss Evingson a top rate singer. In the opinion of a guy who plays 80 to 100 recordings a week, Connie Evingson's "Fever" is a fever to catch!
Good Singing Is Always a Pleasure.......2000-07-26
It's a daunting task to record a tribute album to someone the stature of a Peggy Lee, if for no other reason than every song will be compared to the original. Nonetheless, Minneapolis-based Connie Evingson pulls off this difficult task, and does it with grace and aplomb. This should be no surprise given Evingon's enormous talent. While she uses similar arrangements, she doesn't try to sound like Lee. Her voice is deep and sultry like Lee's, but it's also somewhat lighter. To her credit, Evingson's tribute is not only to songs that Lee sang, but to also to those Lee wrote, reminding us that the multitalented Ms. Lee was also a composer of note. This is good stuff and should be on the shelf of everyone who enjoys and appreciates the vocal art.

Rather disappointing, though not awful.......2004-08-02
I'm definitely a Beatles fan, and I like most of George Harrison's Beatles songs, as well as some of his solo work - the end credits music on Time Bandits (Dream Away) in particular. So when I saw that my favorite band, They Might Be Giants had a cover of Savoy Truffle, a song I quite like, on this album I had to buy it - unfortunately I was quite disappointed with the TMBG track and somewhat disappointed with many of the others. The cover of Savoy Truffle is downbeat, the vocals sound depressed - I guess I was hoping for a raucous, fast paced version with some TMBG style but this... Oh well, the original on the Beatles white album is still great.
Many of the other tracks are competently done, but they mostly just ape Harrison's original, and I've never seen the point of doing a cover song that's as close to the original as possible. Give it some of your own style - if we want to hear the original we can listen to it.
All in all rather bland and disappointing, not horrible but no where close to great.
hey son, lets go play frisbee.......2004-03-30
If you love the beatles and george harrison, this is in no way a good album for you. This takes great songs like Within, Without You and Here Comes the Sun, and butchers them in the most heinous manner. Please stay clear of this album if you want to remember George and how great his music was/is.
A music fan?.......2004-02-19
A music fan from Norman, OK, obviously is not what he asserts himself to be. If you have no appreciation of the Beatles, you are no fan of music.
I Normally Hate Tribute Albums, But..........2003-11-25
This one is actually worthwhile. The surprise track for me( and my favorite as it turned out) was Dave Davies doing "Give Me Love". His version is absolutely beautiful, and after doing decades of stuff with the Kinks (who i've always hated), Dave finally nailed it on this one. Other high points are Todd Rundgren and Bill Wyman's appearances (check out the rockin' version Wyman does of "Here Comes The Sun".
Wish my band had a chance to submit something... we've played "What Is Life", "My Sweet Lord", and "Blow Away" several times!
Steppin' Out.......2003-08-06
While this Harrison tribute CD may not be consistently great, it does highlight with even this small smattering of George's work what an excellent and enduring songwriter he was. While I'm sure we could all come up with SOMETHING that we wish had been included, what is here yields some diamonds. While it wasn't my favorite of George's tunes, Leslie West from the band Mountain positively smokes on "Old Brown Shoe." When West screams, "Baby, baby, I'm in love with you," you can feel the love to your toes! Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, here with the Rhythm Kings, adds a throbbing bass line to Harrison's classic "Taxman" that gives the track a soulful makeover. Dave Davies from The Kinks lays down an aching vocal with George's gorgeous classic "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)." Todd Rundgren's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" may be very similar to the original, but why toy with perfection? He smokes on this one. Wayne Kramer from MC5 tries hard with "It's All Too Much," but his voice takes some getting used to. Former-Wilco Jay Bennett lays down a good version of the beautiful "Isn't It A Pity" which builds into a glorious choir crescendo. Smithereens on "I Want to Tell You" are excellent and Big Head Todd does an interesting version of Harrison's Sgt. Pepper track "Within You, Without You." The only track that makes me reach for the skip button is They Might Be Giants odd version of "Savoy Truffle" which is a much better song than its treatment here. While not everything here works, Harrison's music shines through. I think the true test of music is when others bring something to the spirit of the piece. In that, this set succeeds. Harrison & Beatles fans will enjoy most of this disc. Pick up the "I Am Sam" soundtrack, the Lennon "Working Man's Hero" tribute, put the 3 discs on shuffle play, and enjoy a diverse Beatles tribute evening! Happy listening!
