In the summer of 1976 Columbia Records finally release ex-Wonderlove vocalist Deniece Williams debut album. Produced by Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire and Charles Stepney this turned out to be a very stunning debut and was one truly one of the best debuts of 1976. After singing in Stevie Wonder's background group Wonderlove from 72-74 Niecy finally steps out on her own and showed why she deserved to be a solo act. Maurice White was really on a roll during this era producing not just Niecy but also his band and the Emotions. This is why I love so many songs albums from this era because producers were very creative by letting you keep your own sound but at the same time not compromising their talent. Right off the bat you could tell this was going to be spiritual joy ride with "It's Important To Me","That's What Friends Are For For", and "How I'd Know That Love Would Slip Away"(which was also covered by the Emotions the next year). But things really get going on "'Cause You Love Me Baby" with it's beautiful arrangement and great bass and guitar work by Verdine White and Al McKay of EWF who also play on all the song. But my hands down personal favorite is the next song Free which is so beautiful with its subtle arrangement and melody. Niecy really shows off that 8 octave range with such an angelic voice that is beyond description. The final song "If You Don't Believe" is also one my favorites with its spiritual message and Maurice helping out on vocals, it also conludes with an excellent horn arrangement which is also played by members of EWF. This a great debut with Niecy co-writing all song including the solo penned Cause You Love Me Baby and showed a lot of promise for the near future. I mom originally had this on vinyl and I'm just about to replace my old cd version for the newly mastered edition which I orderd three days ago, which shows you how much I love this album. Overall if you want to hear another beautiful voice other than Phillip Bailey on a Maurice White produced album grab this and see why Niecy is one of the greatest female vocalist to ever touch a microphone. Enjoy.

I bought this album when it first came out in the 70's. I still have the original album and cover in semi mint condition. This is when she was working with Earth,Wind,and Fire. Great album! Get this one and the one after it. Both are produced by members of Earth,Wind,and Fire. You can't lose!

Deniece Williams has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard so I was estatic when I saw this disc in a record store. The entire disc is excellent and considering that it was released close to or over 30 years ago, the music sounds as timeless as if it were just released last week! The production by Maurice White & the late Charles Stepney combined to make this one of the best debut records by an r&b singer ever.

The music on this disc is what r&b artists of today SHOULD strive for but never seem to be able to capture the sheer brillance of.

My favorite tracks are: IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE, FREE, THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR & CAUSE YOU LOVE ME BABY.

Deniece has a soaring, pure, angelic soprano voice that soars on every song. Those who are just buying this disc today will be playing it 30, 40 or even 50 years from now - that's how great it is. If you love Minnie Ripperton and/or Syreeta Wright, then you will fall in love with Deniece's music as well & this disc is a great starting point for those who haven't had the pleasure of listening to her music.

I was so delighted to see Deniece Williams album entitled "This Is Niecy" released on CD. Deniece Williams is a phenomenal singer with her 4 octave vocal range. My favorite song is "Free".
A song about love and being free to express to yourself freely to your mate. A song that I can identify with myself. How awesomely free indeed. Other songs that I like are; Cause You Love Me Baby, How'd I Know That Love Would Slip Away and That's What Friends Are For. This album was produced by Earth,Wind & Fire lead singer Maurice White.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT!!.......2002-06-08

What a wonderful way to start off a musical career! Deniece Williams owns probably the most beautiful voice in soul music. She has the voice of an angel and it is wonderfully sung on "Free", which was her first Top 40 hit, reaching #25 on the Pop charts and topping the R&B charts. Deniece Williams delivers mesmerizing vocals on "Free" and "If You Don't Believe". This album was released in 1976 and successfully landed in the top 40 of Billboard's Top 200 Pop Albums. Prior to this release, Deniece was part of Stevie Wonder's backup group, Wonderlove. Also in 1976 Deniece Williams sang backup on YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE by the fabulous Candi Staton (whom is my favorite singer). On the album she is credited as June D. Williams. THIS IS NIECY is a must for all Deniece Williams' fans and anyone who likes soul music from the late 70s. Definitely this will not be a disappointment to any fan of soul music.

Bonus track is not the US single version.......2005-08-19

I purchased this CD to get the single version of "Free", I had the older version of This is Niecy already. I understand bonus track included here is not the US single version but the UK single version - included in many UK compilations as this song was #1 in that country in 1977 -. US single version is 3.25 long while this one is only 2.50 and as I remember, version hereby included lacks the song introduction.
