Reachin

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk

    Album Description

2007 release of the passionate but suave Mod-Soul collaboration from the lovely and talented vocalist Nicole Willis and celebrated Finnish Funk collective The Soul Investigators. In the cold far North dance underground, they have created a uniquely hot record of romantic grooves! The Brooklyn-born Willis has worked with both Curtis Mayfield and the Brand New Heavies and done crucial work for Mo' Wax, while the Finnish-bred Soul Investigators have crafted two previous full-lengths. Fans of Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will find much to love on Keep Reachin' Up. Adored by the UK's Northern Soul DJs and fans, international momentum for the full-length has been primed by a BBC Top Ten Track of the Year list for 'If This Ain't Love' and world famous DJ Gilles Peterson making opening track 'Feeling Free' the 2006 Worldwide Winner Song of the Year. MOJO and Record Collector gave the Finnish edition four stars and Dusty Groove called it an ''instant classic.'' Light In The Attic.

this album was a sigh of relief at the time along with MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. i was tired of the west coast stuff by this time. then i hear this bass solo on this night mix. at first i thought it was some straight ahead jazz thang, and then i heard WE LIKE THE BREEZE FLOW STRAIGHT OUT OF OUR LIDS...............and i was like whahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i was hooked from then on. this album was like coke instead of kool aid at dinner for me. it is a jazzy, breezy, and flowing brand of hip hop that i had not heard before. yes, they were obviously inspired by ATCQ, BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT in that they seem to dig deeper...........into the planet. from beginning to end i love it.......though it wanes a bit in the middle. at the end it picks back up where the first couple of songs began. i hated that they broke up when they did. i think that they could've done some groundbreaking things in hip hop. i wonder what they could've done had they started their own label and had all the control that they desired.

    5 out of 5 stars 10 Stars (The Best Hip-Hop Album I Own).......2007-01-21

Yes, indeed, the title says it all. Many reviewers may think that that's a bold statement, but yo, it is what it is. Digable Planets IS hip-hop. Listening to this album, and their follow up "Blowout Comb", just gives me a feeling that I just dont get listening to other hip-hop records. DP gives me a feelin that I dont even get from the greats: Biggie, Jay, Nas, Pac, etc. I think the main reason is because their sound is just so different. Not only is this hip-hop, this is MUSIC!! The way DP brings the world of hip-hop with jazz is just genius. I love the beats, the instruments, their lyrics, their flow, and their voices. I just hate that I slept on these cats back in 93-94, but hey, it wasnt entirely my fault. The west coast had the game locked back then. But yo, I'm elated that I finally woke up, albeit 12 years later.
I love the follow up, "Blowout Comb" (the album that actually turned me on to DP; I heard Blowout Comb first) but I would have to say that "Reachin" is slightly better. The two albums are different to me. "Reachin" is just "feel good", jazzy hip hop, and "Blowout Comb" is "chill", jazzy hip hop. I prefer "Reachin" cause, even though I'm a laid back cat, I rather "feel good" than to "chill". "Reachin" is #1 for me as far as hip hop goes, and "Blowout Comb" is 1A.

    5) Time and Space--8/10- didnt feel it initially, now i love it!
    6) Rebirth of Slick--10/10- this joint is just classic like that
    7) Last of the Spiddyocks--9/10
    8) Jimmi Diggin Cats--8.5/10
    9) La Femme Fetal--9/10-This isnt a song, it's just like a poem to a cool beat. Butterfly gets deep on this one.
    10) Escapism--10/10- i love it. so funky, yet so chill
    11) Appointment at the Fat Clinic--7/10
    12) Nickel Bags--10/10- you'll be high off DP after this joint
    13) Swoon Units--10/10- "Run and tell yo mama bout this"

When three unknown cats from NY dropped this jewel in '93, they changed the way people approached hip hop jazz. They weren't the first to do it, but they dropped one of the best albums in the entire sub genre. Tracks like "Jimmi Diggin' Cats", "Nickel Bags", "Where I'm From" (which has an even better remix), and "Swoon Units" are easily classics while "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" is one of those songs where you remember exactly what you were doing the first time you heard it. There's no denying the quality of this album. The album is produced entirely by Butterfly (now known as Cherrywine) and the beats are nothing less than perfection. This joint is easily a classic. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Despite what some other reviewers are telling you, there is NOTHING wrong with this album. It's flawless from top to bottom. Actually, now that I think about it, forget about standout tracks, the whole album is tight.

Reachin' is one of those albums that are so great that they're practically impossible to duplicate. The vibe captured on this album still holds up great 13 years after it's release. This is a hip hop must have. If you dig the marriage of hip hop and jazz, then do yourself a favor and grab this album. You should also check out their 2nd LP (Blowout Comb). Though it sounds nothing like this album, it's just as tight. They would disband after their sophomore release, but they certainly made magic while they were together. I recommend making this a collection piece.

Standout Tracks: La Femme Fetal, Where I'm From, Nickel Bags, What Cool Breezes Do, Swoon Units, Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat), Jimmi Diggin' Cats (My Favorite), Escapism (Gettin' Free), Time & Space (A New Refutation Of), and Appointment At The Fat Clinic

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia with a modern twist...Gorgeous !.......2006-09-07

In the back of most people's mind there's a place--usually a dimly-lit, music-filled, smoke-clouded place--where certain memories reside. That first fumbling kiss, for instance. Or a clumsy, halting, but oh-so-sweet slow dance.
Regina Belle has found the key to unlock memories like these on "Reachin' Back," a collection of certified soul classics.
As you might expect from a woman who's made it her life's work to sing songs like these, Ms. Belle has good taste in material--witness her inclusion of two great Spinners tracks, "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", and "I'll Be Around ".
On both, her strong, sinewy alto voice explores numerous vocal possibilities. Here, she's wrapping her finely-honed low register around a drawn-out vowel; there, she adds a quiet, almost inaudible gasp to the end of a phrase.
This terrific woman is a SOUL singer, first and always, and she's singing some of the world's best soul songs.
Other highlights include a truly passionate rendering of The O'Jays' "Let Me Make Love To You ", as well as an almost spiritual reading of the Main Ingredient's "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely ", in which Belle reaches back into her prodigious talent--and her legendary pipes--and brings forth note after shining note of powerful soul.
There's no new ground broken on REACHIN' BACK. But hey, who needs new ground when you--and Regina Belle--are happy just to wander back into those precious places in the mind, where the magic memories dwell...
    Experience Regina's SOUL !
P.S. A re-issue of this essential recording is mandatory !

5 out of 5 stars Her best work.......2006-07-08

This CD was not the best received CD of her Columbia/Sony years, but it was her best work to date. Most people that I know who like Regina Belle tell me that this was her weakest CD and "how dare she remake all those classics," but to record EVERY song on this CD and be creative and make it her own is amazing. I wish Regina was on TOP like she was for some time. Her voice..... makes me melt.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome talent :-).......2006-03-20

I've loved Regina Belle since I can't remember when. She has such a powerful voice and she suits so many of the songs here. They are arranged well and she sings them all beautifully. I especially love Could It Be I'm Falling In Love and Love T.K.O. She is such a good singer and if you are a fan of older tunes, you should treat yourself to a fantastic cd.

5 out of 5 stars ....Strange destiny for a true DIVA !!!.......2005-05-26

On the wave of an unpredictable, massive revival of all work of the super-chanteuse,who is currently making a HUGE comeback, all her old and new recordings are very much in great demand.
Regina's case is, in a way, very similar to that one of Daryl Hall or Lalah Hathaway....Funny (and sad at the same time) destiny! It 's like her...sweetest..revenge !
Only now people start to realize how influential and creative ( but in the past years relatively neglected) her style, skills and work have been for thousands of young artists and listeners as well.
Regina takes a challenging journey back to the roots of Rhythm and Blues made in Philadelphia in the 70s,the so called 'Philly Sound',putting some Disco-Dance flavours into the famous songs, revisiting and almost re-inventing them !
Best tracks:"Love TKO","You Make Me Feel Brand New","Could It Be I'm Falling iI Love","You Are Everything "...
Since their definitive original performances have become part of the public's collective consciousness,it's unfair to hold Regina's interpretations in comparison.
Taken on their own terms, her covers are very well performed and extremely well produced.
    She really shines !!
This album had ( and still does have ) a massive inpact on the gay community all over the world, making Regina one of the most shining gay 'ICONS'.
Definitely,it's one of the most loved CDs in the Gay Pride circles.
It's very seductive and enjoyable, and attracts young and adult fans.
Gorgeous soul and funk sparklers make ' REACHIN' BACK ' amazingly addictive.
Capable,in short,of kicking any modern chill-out album in touch !
Buy it with Regina's spendid latest hit 'Lazy Afternoon' !
    It's a great buy !

5 out of 5 stars A fun retro album with 2 great dance covers.......2004-01-13

Regina Belle does a great job with classic "Philadelphia Sound" material. Her versions of two ballads: Hurry Up this Way Again and Love TKO are wonderful. However, the real stand outs for me on this album were updated (mid-1990's) dance versions of the Spinners' classics: Could it Be I'm Falling in Love? and I'll Be Around. These 2 songs alone are worth the price of the album.

no, you have not stumbled upon a lost millie jackson or martha & the vandellas album...this is pure nicole willis at her finest. though she's long been grouped with other british vocalists-for-hire, such as shara nelson and carleen anderson, _keep reachin' up_ finds willis stretching her soul/funk wings and taking flight. if i'd not known, going into it, that this were a nicole willis album, i'd have been racking my brain trying to figure out which 70s funkstress to credit for this gem. while the music is 100% old-skool soul, her vocals recall everybody from dionne warwick to adeva, demonstrating the incredible emotional range willis brings to the table. willis howls ("keep reachin' up"), coos ("blues downtown") and wails ("no one's gonna love you") with the best of them, it's just too bad she doesn't get more props, on this side of the pond.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars: They could have ruled if there wasn't a group called A Tribe Called Quest..............2006-12-25

Tribe ruled jazz rap, so there was little room for late comers. Digable had some good joints though and great mc chemistry.

      Top Joints:
      New York
      Last of the Spiddyocks
      Cool Like Dat (CLassic)
      Escapism (Gettin' Free)
      Nickel Bags of Funk (CLassic)
      Swoon Units

5 out of 5 stars They Changed Your Boogie 'Cause Your Boogie Had To Change {5 Stars}.......2006-12-09

        Album Description

Family Groove Company is tremendously proud of their 10-track debut album, "REACHIN'". Containing 10 tracks and over an hour's worth of music, the album provides an intriguing insight into the band's unique voice. Family Groove Company's songs reflect elements of rock, funk, and jazz, and even a cursory listen to the material will reveal an uncompromised commitment to the groove. The band integrates the groove sensibility developed by James Brown and Herbie Hancock, with the more traditional song structure and consciousness of the hook revolutionized by the Beatles. Rich vocal harmonies and a passionate dedication to improvisation are the threads that tie it all together, creating a sound that captivates audiences ranging from the most casual music fan to the most critical musician. Truly, the sonic thrill one experiences with the album is exceeded only by the intensity of their live performances.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2006-06-06

I have been looking for a band like Family Groove Company for my entire life! There jazz harmonic ideas encounter thick grooves, and the bands improvisational/"jam" talent is by far best done by FGP. I loved this disc because this bands not your average, boring, jam band. They are actually extremely talented and original! I would DEF. give this band & this album a huge chance. Also- I saw this band a week ago at Park West, OUTSTANDING!

5 out of 5 stars Great offering from an up-and-coming band..........2004-07-05

I was lucky enough to get ahold of an autographed copy of Reachin' (thanks FGC!) and after my first listen, I've become quite fond of it.

Family Groove Company is definitely a band on the rise. They have a sound unique to that of most run-of-the-mill jambands. Their live shows are what you really want to see, but Reachin' provides a nice alternative look at FGC's sound.

As I began listening, the first two songs, "Agenda" and "Just Like I Planned" really jumped out at me. They have such a joyous, euphoric sound that you can't help but smile. The album continues on with some nice tunes, before reaching a number of my favorites. Track 7, "One's On the Way" showcases FGC's jamming chops, and the following tunes, "Interesting Changes" and "Seein'" have really incredible vocals.

I highly reccomend purchasing both "Reachin'" and a concert ticket to the next Family Groove Company show near you!

5 out of 5 stars Put your party pants on!!!.......2002-08-20

This CD is Jumpin'!!! I've heard so many Jam Bands lately that all sound the same, but Family Groove Company's vibe is so different. Each song has it's own unique characteristics, and they're all really catchy too. FGC goes everywhere from rockin' , to bluesy, to jazz, and there's even a ballad, but every song has a truly deep groove to it. It is a FUNKY record! If you are interested in a fresh new sound to get down to, Reachin' is the answer.
From a loyal fan for life, Thanks.
