The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Enjoyable Funk/Jazz/Soul Hybrid.......2006-08-08

In terms of early Earth, Wind and Fire, I prefer their more propulsive jazz/funk explorations to the smooth ballads, and there are a couple of nice ones here. "Zanzibar" straddles the line between funk and pure fusion and boasts some of the group's greatest instrumentation. "Evil", though, is the album's masterpiece. Featuring some ridiculous kalimba-playing by Maurice White, the opening track plays against it's title with the most uplifting and soulful jam since Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up". The title track and "Build Your Nest" drag the tempo down a little too far for my liking, but you can't deny the angelic voice of Phillip Bailey no matter what the context. "The World's a Masquerade" is haunting and beautiful, by far the best ballad on the album.

Overall, Head to the Sky is seems a little under-developed when compared to some of their later work. There is an earthy quality to the album that is pleasant, but it just feels somewhat slight and incomplete. On an album so short,for instance, there is no room for filler like "Clover". While it's not offensive, or even bad, really, there just isn't much there. EWF's talent was apparent on their previous album, Last Days and Time, and while it followed the same funk jam/ballad dynamic, I actually prefer that album over HttS. Still though, no complaints with the vocals or the musicianship throughout.

Overall, Head to the Sky is a likeable album with a couple of great tracks, but it's simply not the place to start your Earth, Wind and Fire collection. Admittedly, though, I started here and continue to explore their catalogue, so it isn't going to turn you off either.

My Intro To The Elements Of The Universe!.......2006-06-17

Though I know they made 3 albums before this one
with an early line up of some of the best jazz players
of the time and future jazz players even
(Hubert & Ronnie Laws)...
1973's "Head To The Sky" was my first introduction
to the elements of the universe aka Earth, Wind & Fire!
They are my all-time favorite band and this is the
album that started that love affair between them and myself!

In 1973, I was a 9 yr old kid who was developing my
own burgeoning musical gifts,
and boy, was there so many great musical
mentors from that time to follow...
Stevie was in the middle of his incredible creative
run with "Innervisions" taking the world by storm!
Donny Hathaway was at his brilliant peak with
the now iconic "Extensions Of A Man"..
( I miss Donny!)
WAR was groovin' with "Deliver The Word",
Sly Stone was bumpin' the airwaves with his
last good effort "Fresh",
a pre-mothership Funkadelic was ripping it up
and slightly freaking my little 9 yr old brain out
with their 1973 effort "Cosmic Slop",
The Isley Brothers had revamped and were begining
their incredible 70's multi-platinum streak with
"3+3"....
Man, it was truly a time of artistic giants
and the bar was set high then! (Unlike today!)

Of course I was exposed to all this and more by
my mother and older cousins who were doing their thing
at that time with the weed, wine and parties!
But even then, my musical aesthetic was way keen
and I was absorbing everything I heard at warp speed!
One day my momz brought home an album with this group of smiling faces on it,
adorned in the flower / peace regalia of the time
and it read "HEAD TO THE SKY"..
I listened intently as she put it on and the tribal thunderstorm that is the intro to "Evil" swept me up!
That was the first time I'd ever heard the instrument
that was to become an E,W&F staple in years to come..
the kalimba, and man could Maurice wail on that thing!
I loved the atmosphericness of this album!
All music was like that then, it created it's
own atmosphere and took you to a heightened place.

After the tribal funk of "Evil", my young ears
were treated to what sounded like angels ascending
from heaven as the sitar/fender rhodes intro of
"Keep Your Head To The Sky" began with
Verdine purculating underneath on bass and
Al Mackay and Johnny Graham doing their thing subtlely.
Then a 21 yr old Phillip Bailey, one of the greatest
falsetto voices ever, at the height of his gifts,
began to sing and I was transfixed!
When that angelic sounding chorus kicked in,
I felt like I had left my body!
And just when I thought I couldn't go any higher..
Philip and Jessica Cleaves, who would leave the group soon after this album was released,
chimed together like songbirds from nirvana!
That did it!...I was disciple from then on!
"Build Your Nest" was as funky as an
old batch of cabbage!
It had a good message and a young Larry Dunn
was wearing that clavinet out big time!
Then a piercing sonic interlude led to
the gospel-inflected and deeply introspective
song "The World's A Masquerade", one of my
faves to this day!
Maurice was holding church!..laying down his
story of how humanity is hypocritical & phony at times,
and Phillip and the choir was testifying in the background!
It was pure rapture to my ears then and still
gives me chills now, some 33 yrs later!
Side Two opened with the breezy jazzy-funk
of "Clover", which was great too, followed by the
latin-jazz fusion of "Zanzibar" which is like an
iliad through afro-carribean music utopia!

To say that this album and group left an
indelible impression on my pysche is an understatement!
Of course, after this one was a string of majestic
and innovative material which grooved the world
and made them the icons that they are!
But this album was my introduction to them,
and like any first love, it lingers in your memory forever!

EW&F first great record........2006-02-25

EW&fF head to the sky was the first great record that shows the potetial of the band and better things to come.

Just for the instrumental cut of ZANZIBAR is good enough to purchase this cd.

In my opinion the only other EW&F instrumental cut that measures to ZANZIBAR is NEW WORLD SYMPHONY.

There are other cut worth noting , such as HEAD TO SKY and so on...

In the Beginning............2004-10-28

at least for me anyway. This is the first Earth, Wind & Fire album I heard, and I went out and spent my whole ($5) allowance on it back in 1972. Along with WAR's "The World is A Ghetto" this is among the very first albums in my now very large collection. I liked the entire album, because at that time, the sound was very new; the concept was new; and I had never heard of a "kalimba". What an amazing sound Maurice White produced on his "finger piano"! When I read that he was from my hometown Chicago, and was a session drummer with Ramsey Lewis (his "Sun Goddess" was also one of my early album picks), I knew I had struck gold. I had to go out and subsequently get "Last Days and Time" with a young Ronnie Laws on it! Great albums to introduce this fantastic group.

Finding Their Voices.......2004-04-06

"Head To The Sky" marks the period when Earth,Wind & Fire
begin to shed some of their artsier fusion stylings in favor of
a tougher,funkier sound.Now they hadn't made the move into pop
at all-the band still relies on heavy afro-latin percussion and
as on the Santana-like "Evil",and a healthy dose of improvising
as on the elaborate closing jam "Zanzibar".At the same time
the heavy funk of "Build Your Nest",the lovely pastoral R&B
of "Keep Your Head To The Sky" and the near gospel of
"The World's A Masquerade" point to being three of this bands
very best songs."Head To The Sky" serves as a perfect career
bridge-not the least bit what had come before but not the future yet.One wonders what might've happened if Earth,Wind & Fire had decided to expand on this varriation of they're sound.
Their subsequent pop success might've taken a drastically different form.

Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

Born in Newfoundland, Canada but raised in suburban New Hampshire, Jodi enjoyed an almost storybook American childhood that included activities like piano lessons, swim team, and cheerleading. After a brief stint as a graduate student in poetry, Jodi left academia and began transforming her highly coherent, lyrical poetry into songs. Only a year after she picked up her first guitar. I have yet to listen to the entire cd, but Cabrini-Green is entrancing, addictive, wonderful, and so much more. I would reccomend it to any and everyone.
