5 out of 5 stars A Rockin' Guilty Pleasure.......2006-07-26

Ridley Bent's "Blam" is an infectious CD which is funny, thoughtful, rockin, cool. The best tracks are the amazing Suicidewinder ("I'm Johnny Cash When I'm Drinking" Etc.) and David Harley's Son (a kind of countrified noir tale). Think Charlie Daniels crossed with Eminem crossed with Rage Against the Machine. Can't imagine it? Listen! It's a blast!

5 out of 5 stars The rebirth of lyricism.......2005-05-21

I have been in a funk over the state of music lately. Too much empty-headed entertainment. No one seems to be able to tell a story any more.

Enter Ridley Bent. I have been hearing his name around Vancouver since I returned last year. A site came across my path with the lyrics to Suicidewinder on it:
I'm Johnny Cash when I'm drinkin',
I'm the Clash when I'm thinkin'
I'm Mad Max when I'm drivin',
I'm Mike Diamond when I'm rhymin'
I'm Humphrey Bogart when I'm smokin',
I'm Bob Marley when I'm tokin
And in bed when I'm dreamin'
I'm a guitar slingin' demon.

Now first of all that's quite a set of names to drop. And to understand that The Clash was music intended to make you think is evidence that he's seeing beyond "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" Besides that, this reads like a reader's digest version of my record collection.

I tracked down more of his music and was steadily and steadfastly sucked in.

Bent will be referred to as "Hick Hop", but don't let that mislead you. Yes, the hip hop and country influences are in evidence, but listen further and you'll also hear echos of Tom Waits and Pete Seeger, mixed with humour, aggression, affection, and just plain smarts. The rhythms are clear and infectious, without being overbearing. This is a man who is not to be underestimated.

It is the most interesting, enjoyable, and tasty piece of work I've heard in a long time. Succumb to your curiosity and you'll be amply rewarded.

      Album Description

Blam! Is the first full-length album from The Kustard Kings, the house band for the critically acclaimed New York City based Loser's Lounge series.

The Kustard Kings are one of the most written-about, talked-about and in-demand bands in New York. The band has shared the stage with such diverse talents as Deborah Harry, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Lenny Kaye, J. Mascis, Bob Mould, Joey Ramone and Ronnie Spector. The group has received high praise from such notables as Burt Bacharach and Lee Hazelwood.

Blam! combines The Kustard Kings' years of honed stagecraft with their lounge- and surf-tinged originals into an instrumental-blend that will amaze you. Blam! is an album that bursts out of the speakers and puts the listener in the best seat in the lounge.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the beatles.......2004-11-20

We've been listening to this music for quite a while, ever since we were really young, and we've never tired of hearing it. The songs are excellent, and remind us of some of our favorite music group's music- the Beatles, and some of my dad's work (heehee). This music is awsome, and EVERYONE should listen to it. This cd is worth 10 stars, a million $, and lots more.

Fans of the Kustard Kings, ET, NET, and MKT =^..^=

      5 out of 5 stars Time is Tight. . . ........2002-05-24

. . . and so is the band. The final two cuts, covers of "Jungle Boogie" and "Spiderman," will hook many listeners, not simply because the tunes are familiar but because the Kustard Kings somehow make the songs their own--as if Spidey and Kool and the Gang never realized until now that their tunes would sound so fresh as lounge-fare-with-organ. But the rest of the CD is even livelier: Terhune, McGinty, and Woolsey are inventive songwriters, and the band is crisp and explosive. And really, really tight, too. A great record for parties *and* for good close bar-by-bar listening, right up there with the "Big Lazy" CD (you know, the band that provided half the soundtrack for the movie Startup.com)--

5 out of 5 stars This band makes my head go blam.......2002-05-18

For my money, this is classical music. Everyone'll tell you these guys do the instrumental thing a la Meters...hip grinding, knee genuflecting, neck swivelling like an Egyption Hieroglyph cat. You get the idea, I'm sure. I heard they used to do gigs in the pyjamas...it figures...to play music that makes the listener get ready to go to bed (who said sleep?...I said "bed"), it is perfectly appropriate to be attired thusly.
So, to summarize: excellent instrumental music, original, but with enough points of reference so that the uninitiated can get it quick. They all seem like such nice people...can it really be 2002?

5 out of 5 stars Kustard Kings Rule!.......2002-05-11

I must admit I was already a huge fan of The Kustard Kings before hearing "BLAM!" I have had the privilege of actually seeing The Kustard Kings perform twice as the house band of the wonderful Loser's Lounge shows when I was in New York City. The first show I saw was a tribute to Paul McCartney and the other was a tribute to Paul Williams (on the night Paul Williams, himself, attended with Richard Dreyfuss!). The band members (Joe McGinty, Joe Katz, Kris Woolsey, and Clem Waldmann) are all exceptional and the band's leader, David Terhune, is the consummate musician and entertainer. So, needless to say, I was very excited when I got this album, "BLAM!," as a gift! All the selections are exciting to hear, the arrangements are tight, and you just have to move to the rhythms! (I now play this album every day when I work out and I've lost 9 pounds so far!) It's difficult to choose a favorite on this album, but I am partial to the title song, "Blam!," "Elena Laura," Maya (Pick-Up Sticks)," and "Nina E." And you have to hear their arrangement of "Spiderman" - it's great! I appreciated this gift so much that I plan to order several to give as gifts myself. You just have to hear "BLAM!" for yourself - I can't recommend it highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars One of their best!.......2006-10-06

The only explanation for this album being out of print that I can think of, this is the only Brothers Johnson CD not to have a pop top ten hit: the first album had "I'll Be Good To You", the second had "Strawberry Letter", the fourth had "Stomp!" Of course we know BLAM! is one of, if not the best Brothers album. That's too bad because while many songs on this album are on compilations, their best instrumental "Streetwave" is MIA. Well I have this CD and I put it in my hard drive and put the CD in a safe!

5 out of 5 stars OUT OF PRINT!!? UNBELIVABLE!.......2006-08-17

I am a 44 year old DJ who lived through the Funk Era of the 70's-Early 80's and I believe The Brothers Johnson is one of the most undervalued and under rated groups of that time period, and they remain under rated to this day. If this album being out of print is not proof of that then I don't know what is. In my opinion this is their second best album (after "Look Out For Number One" and it is a shame to see it pulled. Sadly, if you are a true Funkmeister it is actually worth the $70. Don't believe me, check out the samples (esp. tracks 1,3,5,6,& 8).

For all of you cats cryin' over the price of the cd from three years ago, good news! Your investment has appreciated!!! I hope y'all took good care in preserving the vinyl then later the cd. This was a bangin' album and obviously others feel the same. Supply and demand, baby! Simple economics.

I own the vinyl of this album. I love it and would love to have it on CD. Why the heck does it cost nearly 70 bux?

        5 out of 5 stars Spectacular jump blues & 50's style r&b.......2004-08-25

The music of this cd falls inbetween two geners, the late 40's jump blues thru the late 50's r&b, complete with honking, screaming and wailing saxaphones, to earthy vocals in the Muddy Waters tradition. This cd continiously jumps, rocks and swings. Making it an essential aqcuisition for dancers of jitterbug, bop, jive and stroll. Fun music, that will also appeal to rockabilly's.
