Customer Reviews:
Not the best, but a great start for the beginner.......2006-08-31
The Commodores has a huge catalog of wonderful, funky, sensual songs. If you have the albums, you would know what I am talking about. This collection doesn't do justice for the serious fan, but for the beginner who is just starting out, it is a must have! Great packaging, including liner notes and chart positions of each song and a rare gem: ARE YOU HAPPY from 1973 (lead vocal by Lionel Richie) was previously unreleased but included in this package! LET'S GET STARTED!
Commodores CD could have been better.......2006-05-26
For anyone who is a genuine lover and fan of the Commodores, this CD would be a great asset, however, too many tracks on one disc is too hard to believe and as it goes, this equals some of the tracks being shortened or edited to the single versions instead of the full-length versions due to the amount of tracks and time. This always happens. The songs you love the most are single edits. Therfore, this CD becomes a waste to buy because you would rather have songs like these at their fullest to enjoy better. It's really to bad no one has put out The Commodores in a box set of three to four discs. It would cost a lot but all the songs for Commodores lovers would be the long versions.
Great For Commodore Fans.......2002-03-09
Essentially blending sounds of the Temptations and Earth, Wind & Fire, the Commodores were one of Motown's biggest selling acts of the 1970s and early 1980s. Though best known for the ballads sung and co-written by Lionel Richie, the Commodores could also get down and funky as well. Their first chart single "Machine Gun" (written by keyboardist Milan Williams), its flip side "Young Girls Are My Weakness" (written by Ronald LaPread and William King), and "Slippery When Wet" (written by Thomas McClary and Walter Orange), their first #1 R&B are prime examples.
This anthology has just about every Commodores recording you could want. All of the major hits are here including "Sweet Love," "Brick House," and "Three Times a Lady." It even includes "Goin' to the Bank," their biggest hit after they left Motown.
Some of the lesser known gems on this collection are "High On Sunshine" (which was almost released as a single), the instrumental jam "Cebu," and "Are You Happy," the latter an early single previously unavailable on album.
Overall, it's a great collection for Commodores fans. If you're a new Commodores fan or just like some of their tracks, you might look for a leaner "Greatest Hits" collection instead. There is definitely a little fat here, particularly on the second CD of this two CD set. Otherwise, this anthology is definitely worth a look. It has several lesser known, but worthwhile cuts that aren't on the recently released anthology.
once twice three times overlooked.......2001-08-15
we all heard the ballads like forever cause the ballads lionel richie performed will never die, brick house tired of that i like this because of the way forgotten funk the commodores made before lionel started shopping at hallmark, like are you happy a classic, cebu that is the bomb, why is that never mentioned? if you wanna hear the ballads then this is fopr you, but if you wanna hear a different side of the commodores then check it out, you might be like is this lionel.
Too many average songs...........2000-01-20
There were too many songs on this that i would consider average, at best. Ordinarily I wouldn't mind, BUT they do this at the expense of giving us the full length versions of the classics. Zoom, Just to be close to you, Three times a lady, etc.... are all the 45 (remember those) version, and NOT what is on the original albums. I would have rather heard those longer renditions, and skipped the marginal tunes.
