Since I am a huge fan of Sade, I felt it only appropriate to see what her band could do without her and I was pleasntly surprised! The sound that I love is all over this CD. Calming and soothing sound that lulls you into relaxation mode. Even though this an oldie, it is a goodie!

I came across this CD title while doing a search for Neo Soul and Jazz. I listened to the samples, but it took me a few months to decide to purchase.

My goodness!!! I love it! I wish I had heard about this CD when it first came out in '96! I feel I have totally missed out on this sound, especially being down in the south. I will DEFINITELY purchase more of their music.

When I first listened to this album shortly after its release, I didn't like it. It was nothing like I had expected, nothing like its predecessor. A few years later and I'm in love. This album is all about experimentation, testing the boundaries of creativity and musicality. To expect Sweetback to reproduce the same sounds with just a slight variation with each album would be to stifle the very essence of artistry. So, listening to this album with a new perspective, a rediscovered love of creation, I am now able to say that Sweetback has created yet another gem for the true music lover's collection.

Previous reviews bashing this CD are doing nothing more than comparing. Let an artist(s) expand!!!!
Yes, this is different from thier first CD but this one has much more texture.Yeah, Chocalte Genius can be a little moody but the musicianship is still there. I found this CD refreshing. I listen to Matthewmans solo composing and he does the same thing on those.....expand.

I bought this CD and didnt listen to if for a year after I listened the first time. I initially didnt like it because like everyone else I was looking for a remake of the first CD but after a second listen I'm beginning to appreciate the CD and the musical talents of Sweetback. After listening again I got past the fact that this is not the original jazz/neo-soul of the first CD but good quality music none the less.

After torturing my ears with the new wave of brittany spears/ 98 degrees sound of R&B ie Chris Brown & Neo(sp) I decided to revisit my Cd collection and I gave this one another try. I'm glad I did!!!!!!!

Brimming with all the restlessness of Public Enemy or James Brown, the soundtrack never lets up. Don't Play Us Cheap is almost as interesting. When Van Peebles couldn't fund this sequel to Sweet Sweetback, he simply turned it into this Broadway musical. More mainstream than any of his other projects (remember, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was required viewing for Black Panther members), Don't Play Us Cheap is an inspiring mix of blues, soul, and musical theater. The film sweet sweetback was cinematic garbage.... Don't Play Us Cheap as a film is too strange for a lot of people. But the music from both films are great! I strongly recommend this as Van Peebles was a better composer than he was a director.

This is another great Boogaloo Joe Jones cd. I'd put it right up there with the two Legends of Acid Jazz cd's. The only problem is its hard to get, so people are charging a premium for it. For $20, I'd say definitely buy it. For $40, I'd say buy it if you have the two "Legends" cd's and you must have more. But I notice people are asking $100 and over for this one; and that is insane.

I am not a fan of acid jazz. But this album is awesome. It is impossible to listen to this album and not want to get down and boogie. I *dare* you to listen to "Confusion", the first track on this album, while remaining seated. "Confusion" is such a great, wildly frenetic, funky track that if the rest of the album were junk, this would still be a must-have album. Fortunately, the rest of the album contains some other very good tracks, including covers of Stevie Wonder's "You've Got it Bad, Girl" and Olivia Newton-John's "Have You Ever Been Mellow". If only the rest of the acid jazz genre was this good!

If your a fan of acts such as Galactic, the Greyboy Allstars, Grant Green, or the Meters, meet the master, Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones. Jones was named "Boogaloo" in order to distinguish him from other jazz artists of the time. To the point, this is the best "Groove" jazz release to date. This release will not disappoint! I had not heard of him until I was introduced to this disc, now it's at the top of my recommendations! From the slow groove to blues influence, "Boogaloo" has it all, truly showing his guitar mastery. Hopefully, w/ this reissue, he will finally get the recognition he so richly deserves.
