Amazon.com's Best of 1998

It's been a dozen years since the Beastie Boys broke, and on Hello Nasty, they show that--though they've grown up, matured, and just gotten older--they're still in touch with the inner brat that always made them so much fun. Turns out that the brat's turned into an ace record collector with choice taste in collaborators, too. --Randy Silver

Amazon.com essential recording

On their previous album, Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys expanded their parameters yet again, melding cutting-edge hip-hop with slinky jazz, butt-wiggling funk, weepy classical, and combustive punk rock. Four years down the line, the group's music isn't nearly as organic. They've all but abandoned the guitars and returned to the kind of old-school beats and rhythms that defined their groundbreaking 1989 disc, Paul's Boutique. But Hello Nasty isn't a regression, and it's anything but a cop-out: in addition to resurrecting the best elements from their past, the Beastie Boys have embraced the dopest high tech gizmos of the computer age. Hello Nasty gurgles like galactic sulfur pools, whizzes like a Sega game, and slurps and thumps like the best backward Hendrix loops. Add in a cavalcade of Latin percussion, calliope keyboards, and exotic samples (Stravinsky, Stephen Sondheim, Jazz Crusaders, Rachmaninoff), and you're left with one of the most creative and jubilant hip-hop records to date, even if you exclude witty lyrics like, "I'm the king of Boggle / There is none higher / I get 11 points off the word quagmire" ("Putting Shame in Your Game"). To paraphrase über-critic Robert Christgau, Paul's Boutique may have been the band's Pet Sounds, but Hello Nasty is the Beasties' Sgt. Pepper's. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Solid Beasite Boys FLAAAAVA.......2007-02-10

'Hello Nasty' by the Beastie Boys is one of their best offerings ever put down. With this album the Beasties felt like they were as solid as they ever were and you could just get the general feel that they really enjoyed making this album. Even the commercially friendly tracks such as 'Intergalactic' and 'Body Movin' could be enjoyed by the alternative masses, and there are plenty of other tracks here ~20 in total with all sorts of different styles that many a fans will appreciate the smooth sounds coming out of their speakers.

If you like Rap and/or alternative hip-hop you owe it to yourself to pick up 'Hello Nasty' and enjoy one of the most unique bands in the genre.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars This CD is sweet cuh.......2007-02-03

the best song is probably Intergalactic, Body Movin', 3 MCs and 1 DJ, or Remote Control. This is the epitome of classic Beastie Boys. RAW and Gangsta str8 outta Brooklyn & Manhattan NAMEAN!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-04-06

i found out about the beastie boys after buying their solid gold hits cd, and i loved intergalactic and body movin, so i got this. this is great too, but my only complaint is the instrumental tracks. what is their point? other than that this is a great cd.

2 out of 5 stars I used to have this.......2006-02-21

I left this cd under the seat of my car for like 3 years, during which time, it had popped out of the crappy case and got all scratched up. When I finally cleaned out my car, I threw the cd away.

5 out of 5 stars a different sound.......2006-02-20

I like how the beasite boys experiment with their sound and they definitley do that on this one,it's a must own.

This is a great collection of Twisted Sister. I definitely would recommend this to any fan of Twisted Sister. You can't find this type of good rock n' roll anymore!

4 out of 5 stars Cover doesn't say "GREATEST HITS".......2006-11-21

I have been a huge Twisted fan for over 25 years. I watched them evolve from their small club dates in upstate New York to their immense popularity in the mid eighties. I sadly watched as internal turmoil tore this band apart in the late eighties, was pleasantly surprised by their collaboration for "Heroes Are Hards To Find" from Dee's Strangeland movie and impressed by their reunion after 9/11. It was like they never left. However, for those of you who disapprove of this recording, please see that the cover does not say "Greatest Hits". Twisted was not about "greatest hits". They were about great music. Sure, they could have included great cuts like "Come Out And Play" or "Wake Up (the Sleeping Giant" (which may be, admittedly, one of their best tracks). However, they included several "live" tracks which is what makes them special. If you have never seen a "live" show, catch them before it is too late. They are the rare band who are amazing "live". Studio recordings do not do them justice. Okay, so not all of their best songs are included here. If you want all their great music, suck it up and buy their other CD's. You won't regret it. But, what IS here is what they were all about... great band and great music. Live on SMF's...

4 out of 5 stars Twisted Sister Rocks!.......2006-08-30

In continuation of the so-called Reagen Rock years, this compilation lives up to its name. Who doesn't love the groove from "I Wanna Rock"?

5 out of 5 stars It is what it says it is........2006-01-26

People, the name of the CD is "big Hits and Nasty Cuts", not "Twisted Sister's Greatest Hits and Nothing else." As a loooooong time Ts fan, I love the fact that this CD represents the full picture of the band. Sure, they had some huge hits in the hayday of hair metal, but in the late 70s and early 80s, they were one of the most vicious live acts around in terms of their intensity. the live tracks recorded at the Marquee Club in London show just how intense they were before their radio-friendly hits were recorded. I think the name of the CD says it all and no one should be surprised at what they are getting when they buy it. The Cd has equal helpings of their most well-known hits, as well as just enough early live stuff to show you what they sounded like before they were the darlings of MTV.

Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, an eight-song EP from Modest Mouse, is a mellow affair. The release combines old tracks from Night on the Sun (an out-of-print vinyl-only EP), remixes, and outtakes from the The Moon and Antarctica sessions along with a couple new songs. "Willful Suspension of Disbelief" is a sedated intro that didn't make it onto Moon, but it sets the perfect tranquil mood to introduce this disc. Although the new track "You're the Good Things" builds intensity with quickening drumbeats and front man Isaac Brock's tension-filled vocals, most of the songs on this album float in a dreamier state. "The Air"--producer Brian Deck's remix of several Moon tracks collaged together--is a woozy instrumental jam that enters experimental, electronic territory. Brock gets sensitive on "So Much Beauty in Dirt," exclaiming that there's "so much beauty it could make you cry" over stripped-down guitars and subtle psychedelic effects. While Brock's distinct vocal and guitar style makes this most definitely a Modest Mouse product, Everywhere is a relaxed evolution for Modest Mouse, a drift down the indie-rock back roads, an Americana-meets-post-rock revisioning of their old sound. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Modest Mouse Album.......2007-04-03

This is by far Modest Mouse's best album. It is hard for most people to understand at first. This album has a whole different feel to it than the rest of their albums. This was the first Modest Mouse album I ever heard, and I couldn't get into it and didn't want to at first. But a friend convinced me to sit through it 3 or 4 times, and now I can't get enough of it. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this album. Close your eyes and listen to it all the way through one or twice, and if you still don't like it, you have poor taste in music and you suck. If you love this album like I do, you'll also love the Ugly Casanova album titled Sharpen Your Teeth. Another great Modest Mouse album is The Fruit That Ate Itself.

5 out of 5 stars best mm album.......2007-03-11

best modest mouse cd. i have all of them and this is the best one.

3 out of 5 stars Three of their best songs.......2006-12-12

I love tracks six, seven and eight. They're among my top favorite Modest Mouse songs. But the rest of the album didn't do a darn thing for me. The album is definitely worth buying for the last three tracks, but don't expect much from the rest of it.

5 out of 5 stars Well my Brother was right....again.......2005-10-29

somehow my little brother is capable of reading ppl and reccomending the perfect song to hook you to any band he thinks is pure genius. Once again all he had to reccomend is "so much beauty in dirt" and I was hooked. Now whether or not this is modest mouse's best doesn't matter to me, this is the cd that hooked me and will forever be my gateway to indie rock with such mastermindes as "The Weakerthans" which I highly reccomend to anyone who liked this album.

4 out of 5 stars drink a beer and throw this on.......2005-05-30

this is my favortie modest mouse cd, first relized they existed when i heard "float on" which is a good catchy song but in no way reprasents their music. i quciky bought evertything they put out. they are original good humor, good lyrics though a lot is ridiculus. next to the "fruit that ate itself" this is a very short album, but worth it. track three sounds like they just got drunk and played a song. it is very good. the only reason this doesn't get five stars is because the last song isn't as good as the rest and track six is good but too f*cking short... this reveiw sucks but by the album.

This was my first concert back in 1973. I got this for my husband for Christmas so he could remember that concert. Great music from the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars KICKASS CLLECTION of BOA.......2007-02-11

This is probably the very best "best of" to be released by anyone ,really.I would of liked "white-headed woman"& maybe "backdoor man"
included. But Black Oak had so many great songs you can't put em all on."Gettin Kinda Cocky"is another one.I could sit here and name off 2or3 cds worth of great songs they did.
This is for the people who never saw the band or know much of their music to start off with. But be careful. This band is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars hot & nasty cd.......2007-01-10

i had a hard time finding the first cd i had of this band. i finally found it in wyoming when i was out there on vacation.
it is a very good quality cd. i will enjoy listening to it all the time.
thanks again for helping me find it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Single-Disc Best-Of On BOA.......2007-01-07

HOT & NASTY is a great single-disc best of on Black Oak Arkansas, arguably the funkiest, grittiest, most psychedelic band ever to come out of the South during the 70s. The band lacked the musical finesse of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, the Outlaws, .38 Special, or even Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet, but made up for it with a nasty sense of humor that's good to equate teasing with, so the bully doesn't get any pleasure. The only thing wrong with this anthology is that it doesn't have "Strong Enough To Be Gentle", but that's a minor quibble. If you don't want to spring for the new double-disc DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION, the fact that band members Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and Ricky Reynolds currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement and stern justice for kidnappers, makes HOT & NASTY an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars My boys My boys.......2005-03-25

What a bunch of wild styles. I grew up in the same Paragould/Jonesboro area as these young men did. They were "a little unusual" in a time and place where unusual was definately not embraced. We were pretty sure Mangrum was an alien but we could never find his spaceship. They first recorded under the name of "The Knowbody Else" These guys would smoke a joint and then go hang up side down by their knees in the trees of this old house they rented in Jonesboro. Of course right on the busiest street in town. They went down to New Orleans for a while and blended some of that hillbilly rock with some new Nawlens hot sauce. It worked. They changed some members (go Stanley) and the name and the rest is a party filled collection of the best simplified rock/party music ever made. I really love Flying Horse of Louisiana from the first Knowbody Else album, but that music pales to Black Oak's full force charge. Please experience their music in some form of altered state if at all possible.
party on guys cause you'll aways be..Hot and Nasty!!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-26

I was happy to find this CD.. Very Hard to find a new copy of this.Well worth the looking though.

1 out of 5 stars A classic?.......2006-08-03

This just furthers my argument even more. Just because an album is more than 10 years old by a "legendary" group doesn'tmean that it's good or even a classic. This is classh** at its finest. I actually owned this album at one point when I was young and stupid. But i wasn't that stupid cause I got rid of it quick. You mean to tell me this album is derived from true creativity from ones heart. Lyrics that mean somethin. Thats what hip hop is all about and this is not a hip hop album. There is nothin creative about this album at all. Its a dance album for freaks. Now if you lookin at this from that point of view, then I guess this is a 5 star album. But for someone to call this a hip hop classic you have no idea what a hip hop classic is. You just don't. Damn can the state of hip hop be so f***ed up when anything by 2 LIve Crew can be considered worth owning, let alone being called a classic? If you give this 5 stars, then trash garbage rappers the likes of Chingy, Nelly, Trina, Khia, Camron, DFB, D4L. then your the biggest hypocrite typing reviews on amazon. 2 Live Crew in my opinion, lyrically is in the top 5 of the worst rappers in history. And they are just as one dimensional as your most hated rapper. If you don't believe me just scope out ALL their album covers and song titles. And ask yourself can you really call these bums artist. Seriously I cant get it through my head why somebody over the age of 18 would actually by this s***. I just cant.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth much anymore.......2006-06-29

This may have been fun to listen to...16 years ago. A lot of the music from back then has aged into some of the best music of all time. This has not. This CD is just not that good to be honest with you. It is very immature (which is not a bad thing), but you can tell, like the reviewer below me has said, that they lived off of controversy and not true talent. If you want some real rap, or just good music in general, I think that you should look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars pure trash.......2006-06-08

I have to say, this CD is pretty bad. The songs on it are just pointless chants and words that should never have been said. I am not a fan of censorship, so i do not think that this should be censored, but it is everyones own choice to buy this or not, and trust me, this rap group only lives off the controversy, not talent, so don't buy it.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of time....don't bother..........2006-02-19

I bought this album when I was young (like many others here). I did it because 2 Live Crew were being censored at the time, and I was under the influence of "support the artist from the government censors". Unfortunately, many bands and filmmakers use this as a marketing tool, so people like me (and many others reviewers here) rush out and buy the garbage they're putting out. Most of the rap albums I bought over my life were the result of this phenomenon. 2 Live Crew are/were a bunch of idiotic rappers who just liked talkin' dirty. The first few times you hear this, it's kind of funny. It quickly wears off, and you're left with a really dumb album by a bunch of really dumb guys pretending that they're saying something worthwhile, when they don't even come close. So a lot of us got suckered into buying this junk, such is life. It's really shallow and just a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Smelly, stinky, smelly smelly funk........2007-04-12

Look it up.

Funk.

You'll know why I give this five stars.

Just relentless dark funk. This is IT.

2 out of 5 stars Demo Tape Funk?.......2006-07-17

Great vocals -- but that's about all. No real songs, no real lyrics. Stream of consciousness female singing to a bass guitar. The music sounds very amateurish, as if it were produced by high school students in a garage. It sounds like a demo tape. And it is pretty repetitive in style (or consistent, if you want to look at it that way).

This overpriced CD half as much music on it as a normal CD.

5 out of 5 stars Most under-rated female musician of all time?.......2006-07-13

OK, so Betty Davis was never a great singer (neither was David Bowie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and so many other singers that made it really big in the 60s and 70s) but she had spirit and was really under-rated as a song writer. I bought this album for a very obscure reason. I heard bits of it on the Miles Davis documentary A Different Kind of Blue and it seemed intriguing. It was a bit risky to spend so much money on it (it isn't even remastered with bonus tracks or anything and I doubt it will be any time soon) but I decided to take the chance because sometimes I make some really interesting musical discoveries this way. Well, this time it really paid off. I think that Betty Davis may be my favourite funk artist of all time. Its important to note that it isn't all her that makes this album great. She is backed by a tight band which plays brilliantly, but her energy is definately a big part of it and the songs are all her's. Its not surprising that Miles Davis fell for her, because she sounds like a really interesting person. All the songs are good, but my favourites are Shut off the Light, Talking Trash, Dedicated to the Press, Lone Ranger and the title track. One of the songs even has a Led Zeppelin sounding riff for a bit of it, which was strange for a black funk album, but really interesting. I defeinately recommend this album despite the high price!

5 out of 5 stars please, reissue this, NOW!.......2005-07-03

Master piece of the funk. This album (an the other two Mademoiselle Mabry's records) had been in my wish list for years now. Sure I will finally buy them, I'm what you can call the "completist" type.
But I'm a patient man, I refuse to pay so much money for a record. I can pass several times through it in the shop vaults and say NO, and wait until better times come over the records stores of this tiny town. I'm a funk addict, but I can say it.
What gives me strength? This is our culture, man! Can't understand why you USA people, you black people of the most powerful country of the planet, had not force the company to publish it at an affordable price...yet.
My old vinyls had been to so many parties, and I didn't care for them as much as they deserve. And you know, you can get the music some other ways these days too.
Focus comments on the product: There is no other "product" (as far as I know) like this. Here is the lady who broke Miles schemes, showing him the breakthrough way to create the funkiest richest and more addictive music in history (if you like it). In combination with the unique Graham-Enricco machine you can find here things that the great Sly was not able (to our disgrace) to accomplish.
Have the money? Don't hesitate, buy it, you'll dance it, shout it in your car, discover it to your friends.
But it's a pity that this is an obscure piece instead of mainstream, for the kid's sake. They need to know what really swings, boogies, grooves, vamps, shakes bodies and minds. So tell the word.
By the way I'm white, maybe not so proud, but grateful.

5 out of 5 stars The sexiest, funkiest, nastiest woman EVER!!!!.......2004-12-28

My god is this woman BAD!

Not only was Betty Davis the sexiest woman who ever walked this planet, she released several of the greatest funk albums ever produced. Those who know of her usually just think of her as a model who was married to Miles Davis for a year. But she was much, much more than just a mere footnote in the bio of the greatest jazz musician ever.

First of all, I think it's fair to say that Betty Davis was responsible for the development of jazz fusion. Why? Because when Miles Davis fell under the spell of this woman (and what man wouldn't?), she made it her mission to turn him onto the new funk & soul music that was revolutionizing America. She hipped him up to the new sounds and the new fashions, and Miles responded with a creative burst that cemented his rep as the greatest jazz innovator in history. He combined his jazz with her funk and out came jazz fusion.

Well, the marriage ended, but Betty set out to prove her own musical genius, and she did it with a series of albums that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest funk albums ever. She enlisted the aid of the best musicians and let the nastiness flow out of her.

This album, like the others, features her snarling, vicious vocals which sound like nothing so much as a wildcat in heat. It is a primal force of sexuality that is unequalled in musical history. Her vocals are sex incarnate. DIrty, raw, sweaty, up-against-the-wall sex. James Brown sounds like s schoolboy in comparison. Marvin Gaye would be intimidated. Chaka Khan would bow down. Wilt Chamberlain would be left exhausted in a heap in the corner.

Buy any Betty Davis you can find. That is an order.

4 out of 5 stars Contrary to what you might think of this one..........2007-06-28

i bought it knowing it was going to be old verses from both artists used from old songs. i also thought they'd use those samples to put each artist on the same song. turns out to be all remixes of old songs. then u'll find that it goes 50/50. 14 songs, first 7 common remixes, and then the last 7 are Nas remixes. although, the new beats are still accommodating to the vocal track respectively. well worth the import price.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointment.......2006-11-27

Not worth it. As a huge Nas fan, I bought this CD. I rarely listen to it. Almost all of the NAS verses are just remixes of his songs of his own CD's. Common is lousy. I would rather listen to any other Nas, AZ, Cormega, or Nature CD.

I wish someone wouldve convinced me to not buy this and save me $25.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Truly is Uncommonly Nasty!!.......2005-07-07

I can't believe that this CD doesn't have any reviews!!
as a matter of fact, this is the greatest mix-CD Ever!!
...Okay, may be not the "Greatest Ever", but it certainly worth
eveyr penny. nas and common don't actually 'collaborate' on
any of the songs in the CD. it's just a remix of their songs
in CD. but really though, the remix songs are way better than the original songs!! i mean, there are total 14 tracks and
i never get tired of any of the tracks!!
i can proudly say that i own over 200 CDs and this is one of my
favorites!!! Cop it NOW SON!!!

They may seem like the latest in an endless line of overnight sensations, but San Francisco foursome Stroke 9 have been playing together for over 10 years. They formed the group as a high-school senior project, and jammin' 'n' groovin' since their teens has given Stroke 9 the kind of musical chemistry many outfits only dream of. Theirs is a story similar to that of teen-sensation-turned-multiplatinum rock band Live, and appropriately, Stroke 9 worked with Live producer (and ex-Talking Heads keyboardist) Jerry Harrison on their debut album, Nasty Little Thoughts. An upbeat collection of strummy rockers and jangly ballads, the album combines the earnestness of a band like R.E.M. with the hook-laden songcraft of acts like the Connells and the Counting Crows. Luke Esterkyn's vocals are consistently emotional without sacrificing melody, and guitarist John McDermott coaxes a rainbow of textures and tones from his instrument without straying from the simple core rhythms of the songs. But most importantly, Stroke 9's energetic pop is utterly infectious, making songs like "City Life" and "Little Black Backpack" echo through your head long after you click off the CD player. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2007-01-04

If you like alternative rock, this album is for you. The lyrics and the music just flow wonderfully in the album, and though I do not believe it to be their best album to date, it is way up there on the list. There is quite a mix of styles, meaning not every song sounds exactly the same like most of the bands out there today. Not to discount those bands, I enjoy some of their music, but this album really has a richness to it that is lacking in much of today's music.

I am quite suprsied to find out how many people are listing these guys as one hit wonders or claiming they have disappeared. They are quite alive and have actually released two albums after this one, one of which is much better I believe, and are on the way to releasing a third. They also have many albums that proceed this one, so check them out as well.

5 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonder.......2006-10-27

Well, for one hit wonders, this was a gem of a band. 'Little Black Back Pack' itself is worth five stars, but the other songs are great as well. A great buy if you are a Third Eye Blind fan.

5 out of 5 stars FULL EFFORT! GREAT BAND!.......2005-08-06

i usually am more into old classic rock and roll but i picked this up used at a yard sale and didn't even have time to listen to it for like a year. i finally put it in and i realized how great they are!

this CD has great lyrics and everything you want out of a pop/hard rock band!

the only bad song was the last one.

buy this cd and you will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!.......2004-12-30

I just bought this CD in Dec. of 2004, almost six years after it came out. I always liked the songs that were on the radio but I never picked this little beauty up until now. I must say, I wasted 5 years of my life by not hearing this CD everyday. Every song on here is sweet. From little black back backpack to tail of the sun this is a disc that you can blast in the car through the whole trip and not have to skip a song. PICK IT UP!

4 out of 5 stars I don't think you dabbed them, oh no, one-hit wonders????.......2004-10-27

They disappeard off the face of the earth after this raucous CD and you just wiped your ass to say what???? Wanna get away from mainstream hype, then this CD is the way to do it. After repeated listens, you beg, more???? Little Black Backpack. Sounds funny? A top 10 hit on Billboard's modern rock chart. A no-brainer for a follow-up, then bam }:-( Worth checkin out.

Nashville Pussy is a no-holds-barred bar band--the kind of sweaty, sleazy outfit you'd expect to hear blaring from a vintage Camaro sporting a "Keep On Truckin'" bumper sticker. NP's grimy, sweaty rock is powered by singer-guitarist Blaine Cartwright and his fret-monster of a wife, lead guitarist Ruyter Suys. Musical kin to Black Oak Arkansas, the quartet pay homage to 1970s Southern rock and metal while poking a little of fun at the genres. Cartwright's drawling growl and ZZ Top riffage on "You Give Drugs a Bad Name" provide one infectious highlight. A reasonably true-to-the-original version of Rick Derringer's "Rock `n' Roll Hoochie Coo" closes a CD that could pass as an X-rated version of the soundtrack for Dazed and Confused. --Katherine Turman

1 out of 5 stars great if you are 14.......2005-12-18

Yeah if you are between 14-16 you should love this crap cause thats what exactly it is. They call themselves Nashville Pussy but they really should call themselves White Trash cause they are not much more then that. There is nothing complex here its just the way you would expect something when you were, well 14. Loud, no real meaning, and they are not really all that fun either so i dont get it, it looks like because they mention Sex that means they are good? Wrong, they suck bigtime and there is no talent here and they are not saying anything here that hasn't been already said many many times, save your money

4 out of 5 stars Great transition album.......2005-09-26

This is a realy good album comming from that group of bands who it is claimed started the whole 'emo' thing (although none of these bands claim it themselves)

This album is realy the classic of Dag Nasty in that it features Dave Smalley of DYS on vocals (proving hear he realy can sing) They did originally have Shawn from Swiz on vocals but kicked him out (officially for missing band practice but rumour has it because Daves voice was more melodic for the type of music they wanted to play)

The album is a good mix of fast, traditional hardcore tracks with slower more melodic songs. The lyrics are not the most interesting in the world and are more like teenage angst lyrics which puts them at a serious disadvantage to Embrace and Rites of Spring. I doubt that many people would even be listening to them had they not been former members of DYS and Minor Threat.

Still, if you are into D.C. hardcore you either probably already have this or need to go out and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars An improvement?.......2003-11-21

I have to say I was disappointed with the quality of the remaster. Doesn't really improve much on the original, to my ears. Probably a better idea to locate any remaining copies of the two-for-one CD that included this as well as Wig Out at Denko's. THAT was a deal.

Despite all that negativity, this is a classic, indispensable American hardcore record. Essential for anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of 80's Hardcore.......2002-08-01

This is a great album. Brian Baker's guitar playing is simultaneously raw and polished, if you can picture that. It has raw energy, but he was very technically proficient. One thing, though, Dag Nasty was not a pure D.C. band as some have noted. Although it was produced by Ian MacKay and featured Brian Baker, both of Minor Threat, the king of D.C. hardcore in the 80's, another big influence on this album was the singer Dave Smalley. Smalley was from Boston and was formerly the front man for the early-80's Boston straight-edge band, D.Y.S. So, it's really the best of both of the top east-coast hardcore scenes of the 80's - D.C. and Boston (yes, although New York was the headquarters of punk in the U.S. in the 70's, the 80's hardcore scene was pretty dismal compared to Boston and D.C.). Anyway, this album represents a high point in the angst of hardcore before it was co-opted by corporate bands like Nirvana, but with a proficiency that makes earlier bands look lame (and also hard to listen to unless you were actually hearing them live.) The emotion in this album is simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best punk albums ever with the new sound to match.......2002-06-08

well this is one of the best punk albums of all time .from d.c.comes dagnasty a band that combines power and hooks.this is there first album and remastered to a sound that brings this awesome album much greatness .kind of like taking the pillows away of in front of the speakers and making it sound like i have ears again.so if ya never heard this before i would recommend this to anyone that is into what we call punk rock or emo.for one this is like one of the best punk rock bands ever and one of the first emo albums ever also.at the time this album was the [bomb] but now thats its remastered it is the [bomb] again.pure punk rock .ever one talks about this band so much but as far as i say if ya never get this album you are missing out really bad.also a bonus with this one is a couple of live tracks for there first gig .which you can hear the raw power live.a band that could play and say so well. so as far as I CAN SAY get it be happy and wait for the next album to come out remastered in a couple of weeks !!!!!!cant wait!!!!
