Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26
Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.
Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.
The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

Teena's Still Got Plenty In Her Trick Bag.......2007-03-19
I can only imagine that after the exotic funk and jazz experimentation of 'Emerald City' Teena Marie really was looking to bring her commercial standing back up to snuff a litte. But how would she do that without appearing like a souless sellout?Well by not becomming one of course and releasing 'Naked To The World'.As with all of her Epic recordings this album is very highly produced and high tech. This features a lot of drum machines and digital synthesizers that were very typical of the era.But rest assured Lady T doesn't just go willy nilly into the commercial landscape-she really has to be involved with the whole musical process. So even on "Trick Bag","Crocodile Tears" "Surrealistic Pillow" (not related to Jefferson Airplane)and "The Ball",the albums most commercial songs Teena adds enough organic funkiness and abscract flavor to the music. The tough edged "Call Me (I Got Yo Number)" features a welcomed reunion with former musical mentor Rick James and the pounding song brings out the best in both Rick and Teena and is a great uptempo duet. The reason this album will likely be remembered is for "Ooh La La",a very old fasioned soul ballad that draws the passion and richness out of Teena's voice and it is a wonderful songs-one her classics without a doubt. The title track is done in a very similar manner and only pales slightly in quality."The Once And Future Dream" is another Rick and Teena duet,a ballad that almost recreates their magic from "Fire And Desire" seven years earlier only this time, the production is very contemporary-echoeing the influence of Anita Baker more then Rick James. Now "Work It" returned Teena to hard funk ground with an aggresive, horn packed style and keeps it up until the song can't take it anymore and just stops.Sadly 'Naked To The World' represents Teena Marie on the cusp of ending her commercial peak but if that's the way it had to be,this was certainly a great way to dissappear and go out swinging.
BRAVO TEENA! YOU ROCK!.......2006-12-26
Jumaane again. Teena Marie is the most amazing singer around! I love her voice and her music!!! All of her albums are a must and i'm getting most of them as a Christmas present to myself! Go Teena!
She kicks up the album with Trick Bag and you're already taken in. How can you ignore that funky beat? I love it, I love it! Not a big fan of the Call me(I got yo Number) but it's listenable. Ooo La La La, her only number 1 on any billboard (should've had more) is an amazing song. Listen to the sample; it's amazing. Just try hitting those notes the way she does. And the long note while she's talking; one word: priceless. On the next song Crocodile Tears, you feel her emotion after being let down. She makes you want to sing along and tell whoever she's talking to
to keep on cryin those tears, we don't care. I won't bore you any longer, this album is simply stated as a must have. I'm only 14 and I've got it, you have to have it too!
Genius At Work.......2005-10-29
The most interesting aspect of Teena Marie's career has been her ability to balance her abstract and introspective side...with some of the most infectious grooves ever to be created.
Released in 1988, this album is on the the totally opposite side of the spectrum of it's predecessor "Emerald City". While the album certainly contains sci-fi moments (Most notably the brilliant "Surrealistic Pillow"), Teena seems to have made a concerted effort to compiled a collection of songs more in the direct R&B vein.
"Ooh La La La", Teena's smashing #1 single, is perhaps the most remembered track on this album. An ode to many of the classic soul songs of the 60s and 70s, "Ooh La La La" is irresistable. The other single that charted on the R&B Top 10 is the jazzy "Work It", dedicated to the Ohio Players, complete with an amazing trumpet solo (matched with Teena's infamous scatting).
Teena reunites with her mentor, Rick James, on two underrated tracks. The funky "Call Me (I Got Yo Number)" is another chronicle of their relationship, which at this point had only been speculated upon by the public. The romantic "Once & Future Dream" is the other duet. Why this track is not mentioned in the same sentance as "Fire & Desire" and "Happy" is beyond me. This is one of Teena's greatest lyrics ("If I swam so deep into the ocean/and found Atlantis and the kingdom of Neptune/Then I'd ive them both to you") and certainly a stellar performance from both her and Slick Rick.
The collaboration with Bernadette Cooper of Klymaxx ("Crocodile Tears") is one of the funkiest moments on the CD, along with the Rick James-inspired "The Ball" (written as a follow-up to his own "Jefferson Ball" from "Bustin Out of L Seven").
The album's title track is one of the most introspective tracks of Teena's career and is the perfect end cap for an incredibly well sculpted album.
A Fantastic Soulful Experience.......2005-01-27
This is one of my fave Teena Marie albums. It moves, seduces, entices and entrances. From the slick groove of Trick Bag to the seductive call of Ooo La La La to the urban dance funk of Surrealistic Pillow to the emotional wallop of Naked To The World, Teena does not miss a step on this full digital recording. This cd is a Masterpiece even by contemporary standards-especially by contemporary standards!!

Listen to Tom Petty's Last DJ...That's why this isn't on the radio.......2006-04-09
It's really amazing how the music business works. You have J-lo jumping up and down with absolutely no talent and a huge bank account, while on the other hand you have Kevin Fisher founder of the now defunct band Naked To The World with such amazing talent its almost embarrasing that he doesn't even have a major record deal. According to his website he paints houses and wonders why he still does what he does. That's fine. It's like a secret fishing hole that no one else knows about but a select few. Life is amazing.
FANTASTIC!.......2001-01-10
This band emerged out of obscurity to become one of my all-time favorite bands. Not an easy feat for an unknown, unsigned band. Their music is about as beautiful as anything I've heard. Kevin Fisher's lyrics are intelligent and poignant. David James' fantastic fretwork is nothing short of exquisite. I never tire of listening to their music. Not an electric band, Naked To The World tends to soothe you with beautiful acoustic sounds rather than blasting you with electric guitars. The sounds of David James'expertly carresed mandolins, violins, 12 string guitar and even banjo, blended with Kevin Fisher's outstanding vocals and lyrics, squeezes every last drop of emotion out of each song. My favorite on the disc is "My Father And Me" ... a touching ballad relating a man's feelings about the loss of his father. I get misty every single time I listen to it. It has got to be the most beautiful and touching song I've ever heard. And the CD is full of wonderful songs like this ... so much so that you can listen to it over and over and never tire of it. Songs like Pilgrim's Kiss, Fifty-Four Years, Blame It All On You, Garden of Rodin, Breaking Up, Give Your Hand, etc just leave you yearning for more. And there is more. Naked To The World has also released three other CD's, their first self-titled release,1998's fantastic "Glass Half Full", and their most recent release, 2001's "Too Late To Make a Long Story Short". And every one of these CD's is every bit as good as "Pilgrim's Kiss", if not better. Find all four and buy them while they're still available. I guarantee you that, unless you're a headbanger, you'll be very glad that you did.
Totally irresistable.......1998-07-07
The intro draws you into the dance, falling right into the storming passion of Pilgrim's Kiss for a gut-deep delivery (that paraphrased is: Sorry Baby, I'm outta here! --you'll find yourself breaking into it:) My Father And Me takes you out to sea with memory, love, regrets and forgiveness. Don't miss Blame It All On You for a song that intertwines taut emotional undertones of attraction with wistfulness, while Garden of Rodin surges down a path of disturbing intensity. I've seen this group compared to the Beatles (no offense, but I enjoy Naked even more!) and Breaking Up reminds me most of that engaging yet quirky style mastered by the Liverpool boys...and my most favorite of all is Amazing Moon --- an uplifting expression of pure JOY! --I've rarely found these kind of thoughtful lyrics, soaring with such heartfelt expression. If you're not able to experience the *extraordinary* energy of this music played live (an experience that had me laughing, crying and totally inspired!) --then you must get this CD right away (which has, incredibly enough, that same effect on me no matter how many times I play it). Besides, you get a chance to read and savor unusually intelligent and emotive lyrics ...and you get to hear them as many times in a row as you want!

Amazing voice, shoulda coulda woulda.......2007-02-11
Nicki Richards has an amazing voice - strong, rich, powerful - what she didn't have was a major label marketing push behind her stellar debut - the standout cut has to be her stunning, lung-busting remake of Seals & Croft's SUMMER BREEZE - and if you can track down the propulsive house remixes by FRANKIE KNUCKLES, they are worth it!
Star Search Queen.......2004-01-01
Nicki was first brought to my attention when I was a 11 year old little girl addicted to Star Search. I have every videotaped performance from her, including her final and grand prize winning version of "You Bring Me Joy". It brought tears to my eyes!! This girl is so talented and has an amazing voice. She now does background vocals for Mariah and travels with her. I also saw her star in a movie in the late 90's...I can't remember the name of it right now. But, this debut and only album from Nicki is a wonderful collection of dance, jazz, and soul. I just listened to it this morning and still get chills from the song, "His World". She sang a slow version of this song on Star Search and just blew the house down!!Get this cd...it's well worth the buy.
Strong Voice.......2003-09-17
Nicki Richards is a talented vocalist who suffered from lackluster material. The first single off her "NAKED (TO THE WORLD)" release was the title song. It was funky and dance oriented and should have been a bigger hit. Her versions of "SUMMER BREEZE" and "VOYAGE TO ATLANTIS" are also done very well.
Miss Richards also wrote and co-produced most of the album. The thoughtful "NEW DAYS OF RAGE" shows she had substance and could write a great song. The standout is the last track, a ballad titled "PARIS"(with RACHELLE FERRELL on background vocals).
The rest of this release is routine r&b dance filler. A talented artist from this time deserved much more. She was one of the few r&b women of this time who was writing and producing her own music(JOYCE IRBY, TEENA MARIE, ANNE G. to name a few!). With a little more guidance she could have been bigger. The top songs are worth a listen though.

A Hidden Gem.......2000-07-29
Having intially received this CD due to the presence of one track of Bulgarian choral music, I was astonished to discover the presence of a musical treasure trove!
"Sacred Planet" embodies everything an album should be. Not a mere collection of songs, each track leads well into the next, creating a soothing and fascinating listening experience. Care has obviously been taken to blend the songs together in a comprehensive phrase of music, rather than the clutter and clash of moods that so many albums seem to consist of.
This album is a collection of music from around the world. Each piece is a compelling look inside a given musical culture, and can be appreciated for its individual beauty. As a whole, any listener will be intrigued by being able to compare and contrast musical styles of many different cultures and time periods. This album houses inspiring music that motivates the listener to expand his or her horizons, branching out in unusual and deeply satisfying directions. A stunning procession of both vocal and instrumental music, this album must be heard to be believed.

Subotnick has always been on the cutting edge of electronic music, but the works on this disc seem a little bit old-hat; KEY TO SONGS presents the same sort of material, and holds the attention a lot better. If you can't get enough Subotnick, this will do; otherwise, save your money for the eventual CD release of the early classics, SIDEWINDER and UNTIL SPRING (we can always hope...)

What? 12 days of Christmas is not enough???.......2007-06-15
Apparently not for this Chicago-based alternative group. "Santa Doesn't like You" is just one of the following 14 songs:
Make My Christmas Bright
Santa Doesn't Like You
Christmas Cake
Take It Down
Christmas Is A Vulture
Goin' Through The Motions This Christmas Tippin' Over The Christmas
Coed Naked Drunk Xmas Shopping
Merry Christmas (These Are Words) Christmastime (Turn To The Children) Closer (To Claus)
Smokin' the Mistletoe
Santa, The Morning After Christmas
"Santa, the Morning After Christmas" is a topic I never thought I'd see in a holiday song. Of course, they tackle more, like stalkers and smoking strange substances. Dr. Demento highly endorses this CD--not bad, but not my favorite of the Christmas comedy ilk, either.
