If you like james brown then this collection is for you. If you love old nasty funk then go out and get.

5 out of 5 stars FUNKY STUFF.......2007-01-12

WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT WE WOULD LOSE SUCH A GREAT ENTERTAINER OF ALL CENTURY, ONE WHO POSSESSED RHYTHM,WHO DISCOVERED THE MOON WALK, THE CAMEL WALK THE SLIDE, THE MECHANICAL MAN, AND JUST SO FULL OF TALENT THAT NO ONE CAN DUPLICATE NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY

5 out of 5 stars A cluster bomb of Funk!.......2003-01-11

You have to be deaf or from Mars to not instantly recognize Bobby Byrd's deep, resonant voice from James Brown's "Sex Machine"-- he's the guy in the call-and-response routine with James, singing "Get on up!" And thank Providence that the Godfather of Soul allowed the little people a chance to strut their stuff, 'cause this album is packed with gems. Bobby Byrd shines on the all-time classic cut "I Know You Got Soul", the song that later revived interest in all things J.B. when Eric B. & Rakim sampled it in the mid-80's. In fact, most of the songs on this album have been put to use in classic hip-hop records, for instance Bobby Byrd's other track, "Hot Pants... I'm Coming, I'm Coming, I'm Coming", perhaps the slamminest on this collection, was manipulated to great effect by Marley Marl for Big Daddy Kane's "Raw". My only disappointment, as far as Bobby Byrd is concerned, is that his amazing tune "Keep On Doin' (What You're Doin' Baby)" is overlooked here.
But no bother, 'cause there's much to make up for it. "Soul Power '74" by Maceo & The Macks is a showcase for the tightest horn section in history, over an instrumental version of "Soul Power". Not only is this particular record sampled more than hors douvres in a supermarket aisle, it contains samples itself in the form of tape overlays of civil rights rallies, a Dr. King speech, and an announcement of King's assassination. This track and several others are also available on the JB's Anthology, but don't let that scare you away...
...Because...[he] has a stable of female vocalists available only in this Funky People series. And man are they the rawest, most soulful singers you'll find. Marva Whitney, of "It's My Thing" fame, appears here with one of the most high-powered cuts on the album. "What Do I Have to Do to Prove My Love to You" is a hi-ball freight train of horns that is a gas to dance to, and ends before you've had time to make sense of it all. Lynn Collins (the Female Preacher), the featured diva on Funky People Pt. 1, turns in a seriously fried-chicken greasy live version of Isaac Hayes' "Do Your Thing". And Myra Barnes' oft-sampled "The Message From the Soul Sisters", with its prominent piano groove, and "Super Good", a vamp on Wilson Pickett's incredible "Engine #9", are two scoops of pure flavor.
This collection closes out with one of my personal favorite jams by the JB's, "Blow Your Head". It doesn't get much better than this. James Brown plays the far-out Moog synthesizer in a virtual free-jazz style over the rhythm section and aggressive horns. Hip-hop fans may recognize this tune as the source for Public Enemy's very first song, the brilliantly grating "Public Enemy #1". All in all Funky People Pt. 2 is a must for soul and hip-hop collectors, as well as a thoroughly enjoyable time-warp for the average listener.

4 out of 5 stars All Skate!.......2002-01-19

The dj at the roller rink I go to keeps a few of the cuts here on heavy rotation. The funky groove on the classic "You Can Have Watergate, But Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight" can NOT be beat. Other good cuts include a jazzed up version of "Soul Power", and "From The Love Side", a song done by one of Brown's idols, Hank Ballard and The Midnighters. Another must have for James Brown fans.

5 out of 5 stars 6 stars of funk ....... at LEAST.......2005-03-14

This album is beyond describable, if you're a TRUE old school, funk fan that can appreciate the down home soul of James Brown's genius (and the talent of the JBs). My favorites slower funk grooves are "Same Beat" (smooth and awesome) and "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" (the bassline is unbeatable, it sounds great playing through speakers with an acoustic suspension cabinet) - favorite fast track is "If You Don't Get it the First Time..." (a hip, head-bobbing track that just makes you want to get up and jam). This CD deserves 6 stars but you can only give it 5. Only thing I would change is to omit the Lyn Collins tracks - I'm just not a fan of her voice - and add in Bobby Byrds' two biggest hits "Hot Pants - I'm Coming" and "I Know You Got Soul", and maybe "Doin' it To Death" (Funky Good Time). Then it would be a ten star album for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Funkin Magic.......2002-08-26

The ultimate JB collection. The three volume set is the holy trinity of Funk. Great vibes from Maceo, Wesley and JB. Lyn Collins is pure passion.

5 out of 5 stars These Are The JBs!.......2002-01-19

If you love all things James Brown, then you must buy this collection of funky hits (tinged with more than a hint of jazz) he did with his 70's band, the JBs. Believe me, you will not be able to resist the beat! The excellent horn work of Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley are worth the price of the CD alone. The majority of the cuts are R&B dancing and roller skating classics, especially, "(It's Not The Express) It's The JBs Monorail", "Gimme Some More", "Pass The Peas", "Same Beat", and "Damn Right, I'm Somebody". "Think", with vocals by Lyn Collins, is just too funky for words. Don't pass this one by.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but more is needed.......2005-02-11

The funky people series is great, but there are still great JB and JB Production selections worthy of release. May I suggest the following (amongst many others):
James Brown - Popcorn With A Feeling
The Dapps Feat Alfred Ellis - Bringing Up The Guitar
Steve Soul - Shades Of Brown
Hank Ballard - Blackenized
Hank Ballard - Come On With It
Bill Doggett - Honky Tonk Popcorn
James Brown - America Is My Home (parts 1 & 2)
These items are long overdue for release and should be considered for future release.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.. fills in historical gaps in JB catalog.......2004-09-11

You will love this CD if you love James Brown, the JBs, Maceo, Bobby Byrd, Hank Ballard or any of the incredible musicians in their orbit during their late 1960s-early '70s heyday.

Bottom line: It fills in gaps left in previous comps. It includes some rare historic moments. A few of the most notable:

It starts with an oddly slowed, "rock" original version of "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothin'" that evokes the stoned, slovenly funk crawl later adopted by Sly Stone in his "Riot" era. It's not especially good, but it's an intriguing opener to this lovably obscure odd-lot compilation.

Hank Ballard telling fellow Blacks that they won't get any respect if they don't get rid of their "processed," or straightened (usually with lye) hairstyle, a remnant from the just-past "Negro" days. Hank says he used to wear a process but now has chosen, as a political statement, to wear a "natural" Afro, one more suitable for a beautiful Black brother or sister. (In a delicious touch of irony, backing vocals for this black empowerment anthem are provided by The Dapps, the lone all-white group signed to James Brown Productions.)

Then you have Brother Bobby Byrd "Doin' The Do," a long jam that is essentially a predecessor (recorded at the Olympia Theatre in Paris!) of the JB's mesmerizing and legendary 16-minute "Escape-ism"/"Make It Funky" jam on the ridiculously essential 1971 Apollo live disc, A Revolution Of The Mind. "Catfish" Collins, brother of Bootsy, works overtime on the funky guitar.

You also have a pissed-off JB, feeling robbed by a few Average White Band songs, trying to outdo The Man at his own game once again. In trying to create a Top 40 instrumental over the backing track of an old song ("Hot Pants Road"), he fails, but instead he creates a funky, almost "Superfly" soundtrack vibe that could have come from the opening music for a Quinn Martin Productions TV cop show of the '70s.

And you've some of the great, criminally underrated female vocalists in the JB stable: Lyn Collins (in a fiery "Giveit Up") and Vicki Anderson. You have just about every great musician of JB's funk era represented here as well.

Maybe this isn't the most essential JB compilation ever, but don't dismiss it so quickly. More than just another CD, this album is a powerful reminder of one undisputed fact. Social historians, musical archivists, scholars and others will spend the next 150 years just listening to and cataloguing the records the Hardest Working Man in Show Business was at one time able to make as easily and effortlessly as paper airplanes on a lazy afternoon.

Instead of these piecemeal comps, Polydor needs to just drop a 95-disc box set of every known JB recording, with maybe a holographic soul sister research archivist (wearing HOT PANTS, no doubt) to help you sort through it all.

This would be one of the discs on that set; it's not the most incendiary of them, but it is another piece of the vast and beautiful mosaic created for us by James Brown and these amazing musicians over a period of decades.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2004-03-15

I don't think anyone loves James Brown as much as I do, but I was disappointed.
It just didn't have the same funky beats as its predecessors.
I found it surprising bland.
Pass on this one and get Funky People 1 and 2.

5 out of 5 stars damnnnnnnn this is so funky.......2002-10-30

oh yes james brown gave us some more funk for that soul most of these were unreleased and I'm glad somebody went through the vaults cause these jams hit and just knock you where the sun don't shine.

    Album Description

James Brown's records have been sampled innumerable times; in fact, according to the liner notes of this compilation, he's "the most sampled artist in history." This anthology brings together a couple dozen of his most sampled tracks, spanning 1966-1976. It's a quirky concept for a comp, as it's not a grouping of his best cuts, biggest hits, or even funkiest material, but some amalgam of all of those things. Polydor. 2006.
