Some real gems here, hidden no more.......2005-05-06

Forgotten album tracks from Dionne Warwick's Scepter output in the 1960's, fashioned by songmeisters Burt Bacharach and Hal David with just as much care as her singles--many of which are hidden hits in their own right. Naturally, us vinyl die-hards will complain about the usual omissions, but for a B-sides package, you can't go wrong with "Hidden Gems". Stand-outs: the gently popping "I Smiled Yesterday", the dramatic "Let Me Be Lonely", the wisftful "Unlucky", and the herky-jerky rock/R&B fusion of "You Can Have Him"(which Dionne herself hated).

Why is "Odds & Ends" not on this colelction?.......2004-03-08

This cd has forgotten hits, but where is her little known hit "Odds & Ends???" I remember hearing Dionne's version of Bacharach's Odds & Ends while getting my teeth worked on at my dentists office, playing in the background in the late 60's. A great companion to the 1st Rhino set.......2001-07-11

Warwick is an elegant, wistful singer with a flexible voice and an expansive sensibility. Some of her finest performances are captured on this set. Her original versions of "Close To You" and "Wishin'and Hopin'" are great and stand up next to more famous versions by Dusty Springfield and The Carpenters.

Her creamy voice also brings out the romantic essence of familiat pop classics "In The Land of Make Believe", "The Look of Love" and "This Girl's In Love With You".

Rarities like "I Smiled Yesterday" and "Unlucky" are just as interesting as her biggest hits managing to be both melodically adventurous and lyrically interesting. "Slaves" is a charged performance and "This Little Light of Mine" is delightful. A few of the songs have a generic girl-group sound--but hey that was the sound of the times.

I would purchase her All Time Greatest Hits Colelciton (issued by Rhin oin 1989) because that gives you her best. This is an excellent companion giving a fuller picture of her impressive artistry. File her next to Aretha, Dusty, Janis, Nina, Brenda Lee, Laura, Jackie, Barbra and Joni as an essential '60s female voice.

Wonderful songs.......2000-10-01

Dionne was, and always will be, the best interpreter of Bacharach/David 's music. These songs are MUST-HAVES for any Dionne or BB fan. The album is worth getting, if only for the songs "Let Me Be Lonely" and "Who Is Gonna Love Me", which are just brilliant. This album proves that even Burt's "throwaway" or "album filler" songs are brilliant, memorable tour-de-forces in themselves. May I also add that Rhino's album design for this anthology is gorgeous, too. The only time I ever did drag was in Halloween, 1994: and I was Dionne as she appears on this CD cover... Enjoy!

BRILLIANT WORK BY A BRILLIANT ARTIST!.......1999-09-20

Whenever Dionne Warwick steps up to a microphone, you can be sure that magic will be made. This collection is a sampling of some of her sixties work that is often overlooked on other compilations, and what a treat! The selections are great, especially "Who's Gonna Love Me?" and "Let Me Go to Him." Ms Warwick's vocals were in great shape, and she covered a wide variety of material, from bouncy tunes like "I Smiled Yesterday" to cool, relaxed tunes like "The Look of Love" to powerful ballads like "Let Me Be Lonely." A great collection. But there is one curious selection for a package called "Hidden Gems": the inclusion of "This Girl's In Love With You." All Warwick fans know that song was a TOP - TEN HIT! I wouldn't exactly call that "hidden," but it's a great song nonetheless.

Hidden No More.......2007-05-07

Carla Thomas is one of the sweet Queens of Soul and the wonderful collection of unreleased gems shows that Carla recorded some great material, what's so amazing about this cd is the quality, one who listens to this will wonder why some of it wasn't released! several of these songs scream hit! "Loneliness", "Little Boy", "Life Saver" are just some of the hightlights, every fan of Carla should have this cd in their collection!

If you loved Word..Life or Jewelz, this is for you. Its full of remixes from those 2 classic LP's and some unreleased songs and a few songs from the DITC- Worldwide album

OC is a legend and he deserves all of the props he gets.He doesnt get all the credit he deserves for helping make rap what it is. The only thing that i was hoping for that I didnt get was a "Times Up"remix. I would highly recommend this to Diehard OC fans but if you are new to OC start with Jewlez or W..L then if you like what you hear( im sure you will) cop this.

The morphing of Norma Deloris Egstrom, born in small-town North Dakota, into legendary singer Peggy Lee is one of the great stories of transformation in American pop history. Produced to commemorate her 80th birthday, Rare Gems and Hidden Treasures gives an impressive cross section of Lee's versatility. However unfamiliar some of the material (almost half the songs here were never previously released), rest assured you'll encounter Lee's trademark imaginative approach: in the way she phrases her softly caressing voice, going from a cool, smoky texture and expert timing à la Billie Holiday (in "Ain't Doin' Bad Doin' Nothing") to the silly antics of "Blum Blum, I Wonder Who I Am" (where Lee even impersonates an ice-cream cone). Also represented is the very quintessential Afro-Cuban fad of an era past, in the voodoo-ish "Similau"--territory explored in Lee's 1960 Broadway collection, Latin ala Lee. Surface noise can be heard on some of the tracks, but there are also some lovely remasterings. Even if you've already acquired a mountain of Peggy Lee recordings, a real fan won't want to be without the new discoveries here. --Thomas May

A treat for Peggy's fans.......2003-08-06

As the title indicates, this is not really the place to begin a collection of Peggy's music, although this is a lovely collection of some of her obscure recordings that deserve to be better known. The songs here are nearly all taken from Peggy's first period with Capitol - her first recording from her second period (Every night) is also included - and many of the tracks had never been released before this compilation was released.

Most of this collection is made up of the love songs that Peggy did so well, but there are other types of song here, including the novelty Blum blum I wonder who I am (a silly song that some of you may choose to skip over) and the up-tempo Eight nine and ten, featuring her original mentor Benny Goodman on clarinet.

Of course, this does not represent Peggy's best music, but for a collection of rarities, the standard is remarkably high. No committed Peggy fan should be without this collection, but anybody who enjoys 1940's music will also find much to enjoy here.

free and easy.......2002-02-03

This is the first Peggy Lee CD I bought first I ever heard, and I truly love her voice. The choice of songs is very eclectic. I love the ballads, but the few songs with back-up singers really date the music and spoil their entry into the "timeless" category. Peggy Lee sings free and easy, with a warm tone that really pleases in the ballads. I have taken to calling the guy I'm dating a "handsome brute", because the way she uses that expression in "Please Don't Rush Me" gives me the grins. I think I had rather picked a different album to introduce me to Miss Lee, however. These songs are, after all, the rare gems, and I'd like to experience the albums my parents listened to when they were courting!

Great disc by a great Lady. A MUST for all fans of Miss Peggy Lee and all fans of jazz vocals. The Sound quality is remarkable.
