Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars iPod owners be warned.......2007-08-01

I loved the movie and the music. However, I'm very disappointed to discover that I cannot get the CD to copy to my iPod. This is a pet peeve of mine - I buy the music, I should get to listen to it on whatever device I choose.

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03

I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Say Yes to Don't Say No.......2007-07-08

Don't Say No by Billy Squier was one of the top albums of the 80's. It is still excellent by today's standards. I highly recommend this CD. This was Billy Squire at his peak! 5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous .......2007-07-05

I was a big fan of Billy's back in the early 80s and was feeling nostalgic for some good 80s music. This album is awesome. The guitar playing, lyrics, and overall feel of the album beats anything on pop radio today.

5 out of 5 stars THIS LEGENDARY ALBUM IS BILLY SQUIER'S ROCKIN' AND SHINING MOMENT........2007-04-09

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "BILLY SQUIER, DON'T SAY NO" by one of Rock's greatest legendary 70's guitarist's that dared to singlehandedly change the face of 70's and 80's Rock n' Roll music and beyond with this album alone. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts pride and joy's, MR. BILLY SQUIER. "DON'T SAY NO" was originally released in 1981 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Capitol Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

BILLY SQUIER will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for his accomplishments and contributions as a guitarist and an innovator in helping shape 70's Rock n' Roll music and beyond. During the 70's and 80's, SQUIER would record many great albums and hit songs that would forever be Rock anthems. However, SQUIER'S 1981 release of his forever trademark "DON'T SAY NO" album would elevate SQUIER'S career to different heights unimagined by SQUIER. In reality, as a fact, "DON'T SAY NO" is SQUIER'S greatest shining moment and achievement in his whole music career. Following the release of "DON'T SAY NO," SQUIER would have setbacks and tribulations that he would have to settle in court for many years with Capitol Records. In 1993, SQUIER was having some serious battles with his then record label Capitol Records which by this time, was taking an emotional effect and stressful toll on SQUIER. Upon completing his last album he would ever record for Capitol Records in 1993, SQUIER vowed to never record again and turned his back on the music business and went in seclusion for many years until the new millennium came upon us. As years went by and healed some wounds, almost miraculously, BILLY SQUIER would accomplish something impossible in the new millennium that he vowed that he would never do again, that is to record and perform again. In my opinion, without a doubt, the "DON'T SAY NO" album should rank among the all-time greatest albums ever recorded thus making this legendary album a defining true testament of the sheer craftfully skilled genius and musical creativity of the entertainer who calls himself BILLY SQUIER. It is also my opinion that this legendary album should naturally become a fine fitting tribute to a great artist that is truly indeed, far ahead of his time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of BILLY SQUIER speak for itself and back it up by doing all the talking. The legendary "DON'T SAY NO" album begins with the forever merciless SQUIER trademark Rocker "In The Dark," the continuous guitar blasting anthem Rocker "The Stroke," the Robert Plant sounding soulful killer Rocker "My Kinda Lover," the fast and speedy paced thunderous Rocker "You Know What I Like," the groundbreaking energetic Rocker "Too Daze Gone," the blistering LED ZEPPELIN sounding hard Rocker "Lonely Is The Night," the breathtaking hard Rocker "Whadda You Want From Me," the slow and beautifully soothing acoustic song "Nobody Knows," the tough and rugged electric and acoustic Rocker "I Need You" and the raw and furious hard Rocker "Don't Say No." May I also add that BILLY SQUIER'S firey lead vocals does occasionally sound and resemble like that of LED ZEPPELIN'S frontman Robert Plant. I also have to mention SQUIER'S blistering and merciless guitar riffs and licks that he delivers through his guitar. SQUIER'S guitar playing is red hot and on fire while recording this legendary album.

Overall, thia is one hell of an album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard BILLY SQUIER fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers, new listeners as well as all the new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of BILLY SQUIER, this is one great album that I would definitely start with. However, there are many BILLY SQUIER greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into in order to choose and purchase the album that is right for you. Either way you choose, you can't go wrong. I promise you that you will not regret your final decision or be disappointed in purchasing any BILLY SQUIER album. I can also guarantee you that you will not be sorry that you purchased this legendary BILLY SQUIER album. Believe me when I tell you that you will be one happy and satisfied customer. All of BILLY SQUIER'S albums are available on amazon.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary BILLY SQUIER album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is definitely without a doubt, one great album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, BILLY SQUIER has made a quiet comeback in the new millennium. I am extremely happy for BILLY and I hope that he will still be continuing in staying around for many more years to come. With the legendary "DON'T SAY NO" album alone, BILLY SQUIER has forever left his mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten even if he takes another long break. So here's to you BILLY. Thanks for the great memories. Keep persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. BILLY SQUIER RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Squier's Definning Momment.......2006-07-18

I was 16 when this album was released. I had never heard of him before. Bands like Rush and Journey had huge hits that year (1981) with the albums "Moving Pictures" and "Escape",respectfully. But seemingly out of nowhere, this song called "The Stroke" was being played on the radio. When you're sixteen, and someone is singing "stroke me, stroke me..." it gets your attention. All of a sudden, "My Kinda Lover" was being played, and the album broke Cassey Kasum's Top Ten. This guy knew his hooks. I had to get it! As I listened to each song, not a one let me down. "Lonely Is The Night" blew me away. The second side seemed better than the hit-heavy first. However, I still find "I Need You" to be the weakest song. I played this record OUT that year. A masterpiece.
There was much anticipation about his follow up. With a second album as great as this, could he only get better? I ran out to get the follow up "Emotions In Motion" and even saw him in concert during that album's tour (the tour where he regrettably signed Def Leppard to open for him).
"Emotions" was a great follow up and i still love it today. But sadly, eventually and rather quickly, Billy faded away from the music business. Never equalling the success of his sophomore effort. I never even saw him pop up in the Rock & Roll pages. He seemed forgotten.
However, he did tour a few years ago and I saw him this summer with Ringo's all starr band. And The boy can still play!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Blues .......2007-03-14

I don't give 5 stars very often, but this CD is deserving of it. From the outset I will say this is a multi-year compilation, drawn from many sources of Mike Bloomfield's catalog. If you a true blue died in the wool Bloomfield fan, you probably have all these tracks.

The CD starts out with 3-4 of Paul Butterfield's songs which featured Mike Bloomfield, the son of a rich Chicago industrial family who abandoned the wealth and dedicated his life to the blues without ever selling out to sell potato chips.

The CD then goes into a single Electric Flag song, which I think gave the band short shrift, but thats life in the compilation business.

It then moves on to 2 Super Session tracks, which will blow you away, especially Albert's Shuffle. For you purists out there, check out the Remastered version of Super Session which has this track without the annoying horns.

Then to the best part of the CD, which is Mikes work with Nick Gravenites and Mike's work at the Fillmore, previously only available in bootleg CD's albeit widely distributed. Carmelita Shuffle, It Takes Time and Don't Think About It Baby are the best tracks in the CD.

So sit back and enjoy the blues, played by one of the great masters of the genre--Mike Bloomfield.

5 out of 5 stars Essential blues.......2004-09-25

You would probably already know that Mike Bloomfield is considered one of the best and most influential white blues guitarist ever lived. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances, and mainly to his character (apparently he was not the kind of person you would get on easily together) and his life style, his musical legacy is spread across several different albums recorded with several different bands and several different solo efforts. Due to the above, even his playing has been wonderful (most of the time) but sometime not so good either. This collection, covering 5 years of his career, includes some of his finest blues recordings, some of which previously unissued gems. If you never heard of him, I believe this is the right point to start with. Hearing him playing the blues at a so young age for sure will make you thinking about what a major star he would probably have been if his life weren't ended so tragically. This is a magnificent collection of great blues that should not be missed by any serious blues fan.

5 out of 5 stars Mikey, We Miss You.......2004-03-21

If you liked Super Session, Electric Flag, or many other smokin' guitar WhiteBoyBlues bands, this CD is essential. B'Field is possibly one of the finest guitars of all time. This particular CD has a lot of incredible tracks, and very few mediocre ones. This one is a must for those of us who love a killer guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great Bloomers.......2004-03-04

The early demos are not very indicative of what Bloomers did later but I guess I'm glad its here. The other stuff is great if this is the only Bloomfield album your going to buy. Otherwise I would just buy all the REAL albums and forget the "greatest hits" package.

5 out of 5 stars Mike played blues the way our generation heard it........2003-11-30

I recommend this to anyone who was a fan but didn't maintain a Bloomfield/Butterfield/Electric Flag collection. Bloomfield played blues with same attitude that most the young white guys then and shortly afterwards had: more notes, faster tempos, louder, racing ahead of the bar lines, and incorporating whatever other styles/scales struck him as interesting. A lot of us have settled down, and now prefer a older, more laid back style , but Mike's recordings will stand forever as a document of 'where our heads were at' in the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars "Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-04-08

This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02

This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

5 out of 5 stars The Mario Lanza Collection.......2006-11-10

I had forgotten just how beautiful a voice from the past was. It is a wonderful collection

4 out of 5 stars The MARIO LANZA Collection.......2006-08-19

extract from most important LPs. Brilliant sound quality from RCA. Also included are soundtrack recordings from some of his movies. The are several reissues from Mario Lanza but this one is a collection you should have.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Kunzel's different perspective on ALW's musicals.......2005-11-06

Kunzel's offering of Andrew Lloyd Webber suites is a worthwhile tribute to this modern-day titan of globalised musicals. Although this album has a different feel from the original cast albums, Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops still perform these affectionate arrangements of Lord Lloyd Webber's musicals expertly, superbly and voluptiously. The creative arrangements by Crafton Beck and Steven Reineke are tastefully and, for the most part, faithfully done, and allow Kunzel to offer a fresh perspective to these musicals in their orchestral settings. And as always Telarc provides its trademark audiophile-quality recording - surround sound quality with a sumptuous spatialiser such that you might be overwhelmed by the Phantom's laughter in the Phantom suite.

Kunzel contrasts the dramatic and lyrical sides of the PHANTOM and SUNSET BOULEVARD suites as if they were written for the Pops. The Phantom suite gains from a breathtaking organ introduction of the Phantom's theme, and from the contrasts in Music of the Night that match the lyrics perfectly, even without the cast album. The tender arrangement of Think of Me cleverly weaves the Angel of Music melody as a counterpoint, while All I Ask of You, complete with some of the details of the original orchestrations, makes a calming answer to Christine's Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. The JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR suite depicts the contrasting and conflicting moods of this groundbreaking rock opera, from the contrasts in I Don't Know How to Love Him to the sheer anguish in Gethsemene (I Only Want to Say).

There are some interesting arrangements on this ALW offering, especially the arrangement of Don't Cry for Me Argentina from EVITA. Although some listeners might be offended when it transmorphs itself into the Ravel Bolero after doing an about-turn from its lush, Spanish feel, it still depicts Evita's rise to power and her manipulative trait in her character, well-suiting an orchestral concert arrangement of the tune and fitting in with the spirit of the musical. Another interesting arrangement is the rousing theme-and-variation finale of Any Dream Will Do from JOSEPH, which incorporates many different musical styles throughout the variations, from ballroom waltzing to jazz, movie music (Magnificent Seven) and circus-style music. I know some listeners might be offended, but in their own inimitable and creative way, Kunzel and the Pops still pay tribute to this early ALW musical by evoking the myriad of colours on the coat and the diversity of musical styles in the original JOSEPH musical. This arrangement certainly fits the trademark style of the Pops perfectly.

The only fault with this collection is in the arrangement of Memory from CATS. Here, this song is treated as a flat-out romantic ballad, rather than as the haunting anthem for respect that Grizabella sings. Nevertheless, the arrangement by Tommy Newsom (who wrote this arrangement for a Doc Severinson album) is innofensive to this well-loved ALW melody (this is the only arrangement that Crafton Beck or Steven Reineke didn't write for this album). Also, I wish that Kunzel had included Love Changes Everything and Whistle Down the Wind, but given the fact that this was a 1996 recording, ALW hadn't written Whistle down the Wind as yet. But these are minor caveats, since Kunzel offers much to savour in these infectuous and spirited performances.

Yet I still feel that Kunzel's ALW offering is a winner in its lush orchestral suite arrangements of his well-loved and great musicals, far superior to any shopping-mall synthesised arrangement. This would surely count towards another feather in Kunzel's cap and stand pride of place with his rousing offering of Rodgers & Hammerstein. I'm sure Lord Lloyd Webber would have been proud.

3 out of 5 stars I expected good music from one parent to another parent.......2007-05-03

While her vocals are great (and very reminiscent of a blend of Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan) and I did expect a collection of songs from the heart of a parent, I was disappointed to find language that would require a bar of soap in a household of children. I can't play this when my kids are around! What's the point in that?

5 out of 5 stars A truly gifted artist who has an unbelievable voice.......2006-01-30

I discovered Kath Fisher on itunes and fell in love with her album "One". Her voice is truly her instrument, so controlled and multi-layered, soulful and capable of long notes and belts. She has a good range, with shades of Tori, Alanis, but with a deep tone that makes her truly unique. Her lyrics are cool, with an enunciation that makes them understandable. Her tunes are catchy, but not your typical radio pop, though I have heard her on San Diego radio. Standouts include "I will love you" on ONE; I love "Beautiful Life" which you may recognize from the Toyota commerical; and "The Lovely Years" from the new album of the same name. I actually have all of her albums, and all songs are just great. UPPERS AND DOWNERS is an album of 1/2 quick tempo songs and 1/2 slower songs, with lots of covers, including a cool version of "Dream On". If you are looking for a great, but for some reason undiscovered in the mainstream true talent, you can't go wrong with Fisher. Why isn't this girl famous?

5 out of 5 stars It's a beautiful album.......2005-07-20

If you like Sarah, Tori or the Indigo girls you will love this album

3 out of 5 stars Great if you are a new parent..........2005-06-15

I love Fisher's music, and bought this the day it came out. The music is good, but I was a little disappointed that the theme for the album was about how wonderful it is to be parents. Not that babies aren't wonderful, they are, but if you aren't a new parent you may not relate well to this album and True North would be a better pick.

5 out of 5 stars lovely years, voice, lyrics and music = er, lovely!.......2005-05-07

new moms will be particularly attracted to the pretty songs. the lullaby "you" is especially nice -- one of only two Lullaby songs to actually make me weepy-eyed thinking about my wee one (who is now 8) (the other song was "baby mine" by alison krauss)

her voice is as lush and memorable as ever, and the music and arrangements are even better than on previous works.

stand outs other than "you": "all i ask" "beautiful day" "sleepy head" "lovely years" "turn around" and "be here".

good stuff! cd universe has the cd for $3 cheaper. i guess amazon gets their shipping cost one way or another.....

4 out of 5 stars Must be heard to be believed.......2006-04-09

Even the brilliant Judy Kaye in the recent play "Souvenir" about Ms. Jenkins couldn't quite match the unique sound of this singer, although she came close. For those who like this sort of thing, this is the real thing. The sound on this Naxos CD is superior to RCA's "Glory of the Human Voice??" which covers most of the same territory. The Naxos CD also restores the piano intro to the Bell Song and the heretofore rare Valse Caressante of which only a few pressings are known to exist.

That said, the rest of the (non-Florence) cuts are mostly forgettable. More kitch than camp. Annoying music abounds but the in the realm of the truly, stupendously awful Florence Foster Jenkins remains in a class by herself. No one can really compete with Ms. Jenkins on her own camp grounds and there is no sense in trying. The one exception being the sung "Blue Danube" with Josephine Tumminia and the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra which falls in the "what could they have been thinking?" department.

Personally a little of this sort of thing goes a long way. The Faust Travesty on the RCA set holds a bit more interest (but not all that much). I think a more interesting compliation would consist of "straight" renderings of the various arias and pieces contrasted with Madame Florence's so the listener may fully savor what she achieves in these performances.

Florence gets five stars but the rest of it gets a minus one, so it ends up with four.

5 out of 5 stars This is the definitive FFJ!.......2005-01-09

A fellow reviewer has not paid close attention to the contents of "Murder On The High C's": this release actually contains every recording that FFJ made. She recorded 9 arias and released them on 5 78's (the fifth, "Valse Caressante", was split), all of them gathered here for the first time. What this album omits from the previous cd release ("The Glory??? of the Human Voice") is the arias by an almost equally incompetent baritone. "Murder..." more than compensates for this with the inclusion of some unbelievably tragic recordings by artists who could actually sing but found themselves saddled with shockingly bad material; it's an absolute feast for those who love outsider music. The 'nursery rhyme' songs provoke bewilderment, the swing version of "Blue Danube" must be heard to be believed, and the excellent liner notes accurately describe Lauritz Melchior's valiant performance of "Please Don't Say No" as "the single worst recording of anything ever made by an opera star who should have known better". "Murder On The High C's" is an insanely delirious treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds Like A Vacuum Cleaner Ingesting An Owl.......2004-10-15

Florence Foster Jenkins was a socialite who enjoyed singing in vast disproportion to her musical talent. This CD has some of her greatest works (so to speak) although the disc pales in comparison to her masterwork "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." (In fact several of the songs on this CD are available on that recording.) Particularly ear-shattering are "Musical Snuff Box" (watch out for that last note if you have pets, they will seriously dislike it), "Bell Song" which is essentially a series of a cappella pentatonic scales by and large, and finally the unique rendition of "Valse Caressante" (which was actually released as a single!) which will leave any listener in a near delirium.

In short, these rare Jenkins masterworks are amazing and hilarious. I can't recommend them highly enough to anyone even mildly curious about outsider music. Why the three star rating? It is certainly not due to Florence's participation, rather due to the packaging. The cover boasts "Florence Foster Jenkins and Friends." Little will most people suspect that the "friends" make up about half of the CD, and are totally unrelated to Jenkins except for possessing no musical talent. Some of the songs are merely boring (like the Jimmy Durante selections), and some are quite laughably funny like the dreadful "The Fireman's Bride," and "Please Don't Say No." Finally there is the real puzzler from the "what were they thinking?" file, "Little Jack Horner," an operatic retelling of the classic children's tale. The other reason I only give this disc three stars is because four of the nine Jenkins' songs are available on "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." I had expected different material on this CD.

The bottom line is that this CD is for Florence Foster Jenkins completists. (Ponder that.) People who want more exposure to Florence should buy her delightful "The Glory (????) of Human Voice," which I can't recommend highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars comedy classic.......2004-05-27

In the summer of 2003, I had the luck of hearing Florence's recordings. Even though no one is quite sure whether she meant to be funny or not, listening to her cds always puts me in the best mood. Hearing her try to reach those high notes and missing terribly is the funniest thing in the world!! My family and I love Florence!!!

1 out of 5 stars The "joke", never funny, is now painfully shabby.......2004-03-07

It is sad that a person who apparently had too much money and time to waste could have done so in preserving for an unsuspecting posterity such awful sounds. The so-called friends who flocked by invitation to her concert to relish an event of mockery were at least as much to blame as the poor woman herself for having encouraged such eccentric egocentricity.

The whole matter stinks of making fun of a person afflicted by illness. What a cruel species we were - and still are.
