5 out of 5 stars Great songs, great singing and great playing.......2007-02-03

Joe Higgs moved to Los Angeles in the 80s, so I was lucky to see him perform in San Francisco, West L.A. and Topanga Canyon (!! - there was a reggae festival at the outdoor Shakespearean Theater - the Will Geer Theatrical Botanicum) before he passed away in 1999. Very lucky. For those not in the know, he was born in 1940 in Jamaica (grew up in Kingston's Trenchtown) and mentored the Wailers while they were learning their stuff. He also did a tour with them when Bunny Wailer backed out - you can hear him playing percussion, and a little background vox on the Talkin' Blues cd. Later he toured with Jimmy Cliff (cd: In Concert: The Best of Jimmy Cliff - you just hear a little of him singing). There are also early versions of some of these songs, and a couple others, on scattered compilations of 60s reggae/ska/rocksteady.

Anyway, the original album is made up of songs 3 - 12, (and not in that order, unfortunately), and has some of reggae's best songwriting, singing and playing on it. A couple of the tracks sound like the source tape wasn't in the greatest shape, but what can you do... Here is the original song order:

    Come On Home
    Got To Make A Way
    Wake Up And Live
    Life Of Contradiction
    Who Brought Down The Curtains
    There's A Reward
    Hard Times Don't Bother Me
    My Baby Still Love Me
    She Was The One
    Song My Enemy Sings

Joe Higgs really payed attention to the craft of songwriting and didn't just walk into the studio to use whatever rhythms the producer threw his way -- he came with his own songs (not just the lyrics). And he was a very soulful singer with a deep and warm voice. Also, the band's performance is somewhat unique in reggae. They had room to stretch out, meaning they didn't have to stick to repeating the same lick over and over, and while there are practically no solos, they play with great taste and feel. He only has a few albums (2 that are unavailable on cd to this day), but this is easily his best. (Although, Unity Is Power, Triumph, Family and Blackman Know Yourself are all pretty good. But Unity Is Power is a rare LP and Triumph is only available on LP from specialty shops - I saw copies of it at Ameoba in Berkeley, CA. I have an old cassette!)

This is one of the most special albums for me - I don't play it often because I don't want to wear myself out on it. I save it for special occassions when I can really play it loud and sing along.

(FWIW, I'm a huge roots reggae and heavy dub fan and have a couple hundred discs, from the obvious to the obscure, and have branched out, mostly backwards in time, to ska and especially to the sweet vibes of rocksteady.)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful vibe on this roots classic.......2007-01-15

Joe Higgs and the band mix well on this 1975 release. It has a very different, rare vibe to it. Some incredibly good cuts. "My Baby Still Loves Me" is beautiful and moving. "Life of Contradiction" is deep and soulful. Great roots reggae album, all around.

    5 out of 5 stars MORE SLAVERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-23

One of the most massive roots tunes EVER!! Trust me this tune is un-stoppable. The thing is "More Slavery" was not included on the original vinyl release of this album, thus making this cd essential. Truth be told, this CD is essential regardless. I challenge you to find a more soulful album, in any genre by any artist. Joe Higgs cuts strait to the heart.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Higgs' "Blood On The Tracks".......1999-12-31

An important and moving album that brought thoughtful singer-songwriter credentials to reggae at a time when only Bob Marley, the Heptones' "Party Time" and Burning Spear's "Man In The Hills" mattered. Buy this in tribute to the late Higgs and give your reggae record collection some class.

5 out of 5 stars "Highly underrated masterpiece".......2006-11-12

I don't see how can you give this album anything less than four stars. This is just as good as their first three Mercury releases and uses a little more synthenseizers (courtesy of my man William "Billy Beck) but it blends in with the band so well. As usual you have classic OP cuts that varies from exceptional funk jams to the most sultry slow jams you've ever heard. First of all let me tell you why OP were one of the top three bands ever (in any musical genre). They always gave you something different and they were trendsetters of smooth out funk with some of the best slow jams by any band. They never talked to much about the world and politics (if ever), but they stuck to the script and and created a unique sound without any outside influence (unlike some bands I won't mention). Now back to this album, if you can't feel the deep down soul in "Precious Love" and "My Life"... you obviously don't know what real musical creativity is. It's worth it for those two tracks alone. I also love the title cut and the classic "Who'd She Coo?" which took time to grow on me. I don't know why they don't make music like this today. These guys are legends and kudos to Billy and Diamond on the great falsetto vocals. A must have for your OP collection!!

5 out of 5 stars Mississippi FUNK! WOW!.......2005-02-17

This album is kinda uneven but it contains their funkiest track ever Far East Mississippi. This song alone is worth buying the album.

      5 out of 5 stars Sloppy!.......2005-02-15

With the exception of of the tight 'Who'd She Coo" and 'Far East Mississippi' this album, notably the title song seems to lack musical focus. The songs jump around from one vein to the next without thought with only two exceptions to the rule-
the grooving "Tell The Truth" and "My Lady Runs Me Crazy".But I don't think saving two of the stronger cuts for last did the Players any good-it slowed they're momentum and as such 'Contradiction' is often thought of as the harbinger of their late 70's decline. But the album is an artistic success,if not an edequetly commercial follow up to 'Honey, even though I personally would recommend the next year's 'Mr.Mean' album before this-DESPITE what some boneheaded writers and critics say that album actually had alot more commercial appeal then this musically jerking material does. But for the more suspect fans stick with that enicial triade of albums on Mercury from 1974/75 because THEY have the most pop appeal. But to Ohio Player's fan who want to ddig a little deeper don't pass this by.

5 out of 5 stars SMOOTH FUNK players STYLE... !.......2004-10-31

The OHIO PLAYERS seemed to crank out just one album after another straight through the '70s, with fans just as eager to see the next album cover, as hear the music. - - True, in terms of both funk, and cover illustrations they were a lot more hard core (literally) in their WESTBOUND years, but as they moved on to Mercury they came up with a new idea... the Jazzed out, funky arp driven nasty smooth funk Jam... This isn't the music you listen to put someone in the mood for the act (say like a Barry White or Grover Washington album) its the album you listen to WHILE you're doing it ! ! ! That's the best way to describe it. - - Although FIRE and SKIN TIGHT were probably their most popular albums of that era THIS and HONEY are actually my faves... I particularly like this album because ALL the tracks are good... When I was a teenager and first started listening to the players I remember always saving this album (and Issac Hayes's SHAFT) for LAST right before I went to bed, because I new I could just put it on the table and let it play straight through (!) - - then if I was still awake, turn it over, and if not... have absolutely no reason to want to STOP it and put on something else... Althoughthere were plenty of "funk" groups who were Jazzy, Slick, Smooth and Funky during that era (Gap, Cameo, Earth Wind and Fire come to mind) I like the Ohio Players because they had a genuinely nasty edge... I don't think anybody, even PRINCE in later years was able quite able to get that mix right... atleast as good as the players... and now, whenever I hear those "slow jams" playing on those "urban contemporary" type stations I can't help but think how many artists need a bit of schooling from the guys who got it right well before them ! Incidentally, if anyone in this world has a copie of JUNIE... please let me know... I have no idea where my copy went and miss it bad ! ! ! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars No Contradictions on this One!.......2001-10-28

The players threw some down home funk on this one,the title track is funk rock at it,s best while far east mississippi is just down and dirty dayton funk!a true musicians dream just listen the vocals and musicianship after all the players were known to employ over twenty different instruments for one album a must have.

      Product Description

A journey into the dark infinity of inner space, Dwight Ashleys premiere solo recording is an aural world rich in paradox and contradiction. Ashley characterizes his work as experimental and in fact, the release of the album is itself something of an experiment. Remarking on the body of his work over the past two decades, Ashley muses in the liner notes to his album, I sometimes questioned whether it truly qualified as music. Discrete Carbon asks the listener for a verdict and in so doing, demands a rethinking of exactly what music is, does, and ultimately, means to the listener.

4 out of 5 stars some Erie stuff.......2005-03-11

I recently received two cds by Dwight Ashley, this collection of stuff from 1999 and 2003 and the more recent Four with compositions from 2003/4. Erie, I say, cuz it's from Toledo, Ohio, on the shores of that Lake of same name. Now, place doesn't always count for much, I realize. But, if we are what we eat, then I think we sound like what we hear.

These ambient pieces sound like winter to me. (Course, I received them here in Reno in the midst of an hundred-year snow storm...) Track 3 "katalepsis" shimmers like an ice sculpture in the dark. Track 9 "examined by tweezers" seems a meditation on the modulation of sound passing thru an "empty" medium (the atmosphere perhaps, or maybe one's home as one works with the stereo on in the background).

Musically, I am reminded of the music of Jeff Grienke and of ambient Eno of the Discreet Music period. There is some happy piano music on a hidden track 15 reminding me somewhat of the happy piano music on Aphex Twin's "drukqs." Of the two cds, I think I like Four the best because of its darker edge.
