Editorial Reviews

This is an exquisite, carefully compiled collection of 15 true gems from the Motown vaults that is well-sequenced and sure to satisfy both mainstream music buyers and the many ardent fans of the legendary label's extensive output. Avoiding the trap of including too many tracks that have appeared on other packages, this smooth set boasts some real treasures: try the Dynamic Superiors' harmony classic "Shoe Shoe Shine," written and produced by Ashford and Simpson, and Valerie Simpson's own soulful contribution, "Silly Wasn't I," from her brilliant 1972 self-titled solo album. Although billed as a solo performer, Rick James is joined by the ever-talented Teena Marie for the gorgeous cut "Happy" and other genuine gems include Eddie Kendricks's 1978 hit "Intimate Friends" and fellow ex-Temptation David Ruffin's "Just Let Me Hold You for a Night"--which alone is worth the price of the entire CD. A superb compilation. --David Nathan

5 out of 5 stars A true Must have.......2000-03-18

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of rare/not so rare Motown jams........2000-01-19

Let the ol'skooler skool ya--this is worth 10 Amazon.com 5-Star ratings. Many folks would be glad to get that Switch tune, "I Wanna Be Closer" and the Commodores and Lionel Richie at his philosophical best in "Zoom" both on one CD...but wait! There's more! Some say it's not possible to have this much joy in one package...i say the CD is slammin, timeless, with the man who is pure geniussmokey robinson on quiet storm...uh, excuseme, that's just not the way we do things here in Oz. Ultra-rare, indeed, is the smooth Dynamic Superiors with a lost 45s tune--by that I mean everybody you knew must've had a 45s rpm record copy of "Shoe Shoe Shine" (Useta cost a dime, a penny would buy you plenty) and either lost it or someone took it...but, look it is here in this great collection! Plus--!,Plus---! The immortal Eddie Kendricks does a tune from a "pre-Truckin'" album (I think it was the LP, "My People, Hold On"--if anyone knows for sure, please feel free to comment), with a groove surely designed to feel just like after intimacy:"Intimate Friends" allowed many strangers to be just that. And wait another minute! You have the dueling duets of James/Marie vs Gaye/Terrell in,respectively, "Happy" and "Your Precious Love"...notice: neither tagteam budges an inch! Classix Motown is well represented with "Fork in the Road" by The Miracles and "Silly Wasn't I" from a Val Simpson solo project done way, way before she and Kick Ashford did "Is It Still Good To Ya". Marvin's original "Distant Lover" and the Tempt's "Heavenly" are two other highlights of this excellent CD--I've gotta hand it to the powers that be which put this one out. All playing aside, this is put together just right! Get it before it's gone!
