Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Robbery: Remixed, Remastered, and Remarkable!.......2007-03-08
Without a doubt, Teena Marie put her heart, foot, and soul in this concept album. After listening to the torch ballads "Dear Lover" and "Cassanova Brown" alone, I became a bonafied Teena Marie fan for life. I have every Teena Marie CD in my music collection, and Robbery remains my all time favorite by her. If you don't have this cd, then what are you waiting for? It's truely a must have that no R&B lover should be without.
Teena's Classic Debut On Epic....What Was Motown Thinking???.......2006-09-08
This is Teena's 1st & best 'post-Motown' performance. She is a rare multi-talented musician, and she displays her many skills here. As usual, Teena wrote, produced, and performed most of the music by herself. Motown was crazy to let her go!! She is a master of Pop, R&B,and Jazz, which are all performed so well. 'Lovergirl', 'Midnight Magnet', 'Stop The World', 'Ask Yo Momma', 'Shadow Boxing', and the classic 'Cassanova Brown' (inspired by Rick James!!) are all on Teena's 'Robbery'. The recent edition of 'Robbery' includes a few rare extended remixes, and I'd also recommend this new version (only if it doesn't have that dreaded copy protection embeded in the disc, which can harm your PC!!).
Peace, SD

Teena 's Epic Records Debut........2006-03-01
This was the first lp issued in 1983 for Teena Marie on Epic Records and was considered not only her break up album with Motown but Rick James as well. This album was the work of fighting to get off Motown (there is a law under Teena's name that stated that a label must issue a work of an artist with a certain period of time or let the artist leave the label) and from 1981's It Must Be Magic to 1983 's Robbery it is a huge artistic leap. By now Teena was writing, singing, arranging and producing herself for about 3 years now and too total control on this album as well. Robbery hit only number 119 on the POP album charts but was a much bigger R&B album hit as usual.
The hits off the cd are "Fix It" which reached number 21 R&B, "Midnight Magnet" which reached number 36 R&B and "Dear Lover" which peaked at number 77 R&B as well. No track crossed over to the pop charts at all. Although I do remember a video for "Robbery" with Teena driving a car. I only saw the video once on TV 50 from Detroit in 1983.
For me the album as a whole is more introspective in nature with the balance more evenly this time with both ballads and dance tracks. The hits of "Fix It" and "Midnight Magnet" with the deep funk groove make them killer tracks 23 years later. "Robbery" is one of the better R&B/Rock hybrids of it's time. Still in 2006 there are not a lot of R&B acts fusing deep funk grooves with flat out Rock guitars.
The best tracks for most fans always tend to be the ballads and the ones on this collection are no different. "Stop The World", "Shadow Boxing", "Cassanova Brown" and the hit "Dear Lover" are top notch. It is the songwriting that is so personal, lyrical, multilayered both in meaning and vocally that still shine.
BUT the best track is the very personal tribute to Janis Ian and "Society's Child" track "Ask Your Momma". It is a track that still rings true today. A++++
So again if you are a new fan of Teena or an old fan like me and most people this is a gem of a cd. The reiussue cd contains the bonus tracks of the killer 12" mix for "Playboy" (5:48) and the instrumental 12" mixes for "Midnight Magnet" (5:56) and "Fix It" (8:16)-- if you want the full vocal 12" mix for "Fix It" then buy the Lovergirl-- the best of collection on Epic . It is 6:26 on that cd.
Teena STOLE My HEART With This ONE!.......2005-12-17
Teena, Teena, Teena. What more can I say about Miss Lady T!? Words can't describe. My title of this review says it best. But I'll try to say a little more.
I first heard of Teena Marie way back in 1981 when I was only seven years old. Square Biz was the song of the day from her album "It Must Be Magic". I loved her even then. But the real "Magic" happened for me 2 years later in 1983 when I was nine years old. My mother and I were at a friends and family gathering and one friend had a new album by Teena called "Robbery". I had to have it! So my mother bought it for me. Talk about an album being played. I wore that album out. To this day "Robbery" is my most favorite Teena Marie album. Hands down. I love the songs "Playboy", "Shadow Boxing", "Dear Lover" and "Stop the World". But my most favorite songs on the album without a doubt are "Midnight Magnet" and "Cassanova Brown".
Teena's voice sings to the Heaven's and in return the Angels play her Orchestra. Her words are poetry that flow like blood through my veins.
Teena Marie is my favorite female artist of all time. She is the female version of Prince and he is my favorite male artist of all time. Unfortunately, for some strange unspoken reason, she has not had the same kind of success as Prince. They are both prolific. They both sing, write, produce and play many different instruments. In the 80's they both had albums out almost every year with quality music that still rings true to people to this day. What other artists around have all of those attributes? I would love to have them collaborate on something together. I know it would be all that and then some.

One of Jerry Goldsmith's Best.......2006-01-17
My favorite Jerry Goldsmith film score will always be his Academy Award-winning work for THE OMEN (an excellent Special Edition CD is available too, by the way).
But I also loved his stylish and elegant score for THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. He manages to capture the pomp of 19th Century English society (or snobbery, depending on your attitude) along with the excitement of the robbery scenes throughout the entire score--the sound of classical music with the fun of a winking romp.
I had the soundtrack on vinyl back when the film came out and I'm thrilled that it's been remastered and released on CD.
Check it out.

Customer Reviews:
It went from so good to so bad, so fast........2006-05-12
This album by songwriter Shel Silverstein was recorded in 1980. It is a country album, more or less. The songs are humorous, as Silverstein's songs usually are. Shel isn't a very good singer, in the traditional sense, but he manages to get across funny songs quite well. Fans of humorous songs should enjoy this album.
11 songs, 11 winners...5 stars plus...........2003-01-26
Seldom do you buy a CD where you really like and enjoy all the selections. For me, this album fulfilled just that. I've always been a fan of Dr. Hook and have most of their songs. Shel Silversteins's album is Dr. Hook revisited and more. My other Silverstein albums are on the way, and I only wish there were more.
Typical Silverstein humour - a must for any collection.......1998-07-10
I'll try and keep this short and sweet. Shel Silverstein came to my attention several years ago when Doctor Hook recorded several of his songs on the album "Bankrupt", an album that I would rate in my all time top ten. Four years ago I stumbled accross this album and it has been in and out of my CD player ever since - on a more regular basis than any other album in my collection. Shel has a gruff, deep, painful sounding voice, but he carry humour and sadness equally well. Hoever, every track on this album, fall, most definitely, into the former category. I don't have time to go into every track, but I recommend this album wholehearedly. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

What Happened?!!!!!!.......2005-11-11
Sorry triple 6, but Choices 1 was a whole lot better than this.
First thing, what happened with the beats?, choices 1 had that
dark, murder, heavy bass hits like y'all usually do which made it
unstoppable to listen to. But Choices 2: The Set Up soundtrack
was WAY different but I still listen to it though. But Not as much
I listen to choices 1. What's going on?, I hope that this was
not Sony Music's decision.
Ok Movie, not to good cd..........2005-11-07
Sorry Triple6 but the first movie was the bomb....This one is ok... But hey what happen on the cd??? Its not to good.. Also the first DVD had music on it this one doesn't... I can't wait to see Pat and the next movie.....Peace....
CHOICES II, another tyte movie music combo.......2005-10-26
more rappers need to do this. the movie is pretty clean as well as the music. this is a must have.
Pretty Good Movie.......2005-07-23
Three 6 Once again drops a crunk album. Though not they're best, it's pretty good. The best tracks are It's Whateva Wit Us, Gettin' Real Buck, and Who Da F*** U Playin' Wit. The soundtrack is by far not Triple Six's best album. If you want the good stuff check out Mystic Stylez, The End, Chapter 2: World Domination, and Prophet Posse: Body Parts. You should pick this album up for the DVD movie. The movie is pretty good, better than I thought it would be. It is funny at times, too. So go ahead & pick this up.

It's said that the sins of the father are visited upon the son, a theme that permeates this based-on-a-true-story cop film with a generational twist. Given the film's troubling emotional core and urban landscape, composer John Murphy scores it with remarkably eclectic panache. Starting with a somber, string-driven theme that subtly evokes the story's undercurrents of Greek tragedy, Murphy quickly draws upon everything from ska rhythms, Chopin piano pieces, house music, and even East Asian flourishes to bring its various emotional and cultural conflicts into focus. It's a score whose range and dynamic sense alone are impressive, but also one that never forgets where its heart lies. Murphy occasionally lapses into predictable action cues, but it's his evocative side excursions into the pop vernacular that balance the autumnal orchestral themes and impart the entire score with compelling new dimensions. It's a great example of how music can be more than merely the sum of its parts. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
3 Stars for City By the Sea.......2006-01-31
John Murhpy is an unknown composer to me, but City by the Sea is a pretty good album. Nothing groundbreaking, to be sure, but well-made and occasionally moving. The score is short, which is not a surprise considering it comes from Varese Sarabande, but if you can find it for cheap like I did (11 bucks) than it's worth it. In terms of action or suspense, there isn't much here. This is more of an experimental drama score, that sometimes has very tragic string, piano, and orchestral arrangements. It's not bad, and makes Murphy a name to look out for.
cheers

Album Description
COS, the Belgian ZAO, follows with this second album its orientation towards an European rock developed, orchestrated with complex rhythms. Their music evokes the Canterbury chamber-rock (CARAVAN, HATFIELD AND THE NORTH), the anguished and dark music of KING CRIMSON or QUIET SUN. They also evoke the most original European jazz-rock, that of ZAO or Terje RYPDAL. Pascale SON uses her high-pitched voice, able to perform the most incredible modulations. She is the best singer in that style of singing. Daniel SCHELL is a very extraordinary guitarist with original ideas like Robert FRIPP. The CD includes several unreleased tracks and alternate takes.
