Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29

Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-01-09

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

In perhaps the most potent of his speeches released on CD (this one recorded in 1995 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), linguist and political critic Noam Chomsky frankly addresses the evident--but largely undiscussed--lines of class in American society, comparing, for example, American labor laws and practices with those of its global comrades. "The government," Chomsky says, quoting John Dewey, his favorite Democratic philosopher, "is the shadow cast by business over society." He bemoans corporate propaganda, the crushing of unions, and the "created wants" that have left us "a devastated peasant society.... People are scared, angry, and hostile." Pretty tough stuff, but Chomsky does offer one ray of hope: "If you want to change something, change the substance, not the shadow." --Michael Ruby

2 out of 5 stars Drivel.......2007-03-30

This audio recording is a whining, self indulgent, paranoid and conspiracy theorist style indictment of big business. He hates the Fortune 500 companies, but it would be interesting too see what the USA would be like if these companies suddenly disappeared of the face of the earth. Would it be a good place to live in then? What would Mr. Chumpsky say to that? Rather buy "Capitalism, the Unknown Ideal" by Rand, and Greenspan if you want to read something that makes sense.

5 out of 5 stars The anger is real and justified.......2006-06-20

This speech was recorded live at MIT back in 1995. I had to put this recording aside for a few years because it made me so angry to listen to it. I wasn't mad at Chomsky or his views- I was mad at the infuriating truths that he reveals and documents. Having spent most of my life in industry on either the shop floor or the engineering office I knew that I was hearing truth. Having also put in my time in grad school I had little trust or like for academics, but Prof. Chomsky is the exception that proves the rule. These aren't sound bites, they are documented truths expressed in honest language. By the way, Chomsky isn't in any way calling for "class war" here, he is just describing the reality what has been going on for several decades now.

There is truth here that you never hear anywhere else. Even wild-eyed radicals seldom deliver hard, unpleasant facts this well. Let's face it, human rights have always been subordinant to business rights in this country. But things have gotten outrageously worse in modern times. We are a corporate tyranny far surpassing any level of totalitarianism found in the rest of the developed world. And it really started with outright criminal behavior under the "great" Ronald Reagan. I know- I saw it happen.

Perhaps the most frightening thing about this speach is its talk of "anti-politics." Briefly, this is the organised campaign to blame everything on the government- even when big business is really in control. They want the people to hate and fear the government, because democratic government has a dangerous flaw- it actually has the slight chance of becoming truly democratic. You see, corporations are perfect- perfect tyrannies. The average worker, the average citizen, is never going to be able to change or control them. The government is the only thing the average citizen has the potential to control. Therefore the average citizen must be taught to hate, fear, or simply dismiss organised political action. What you get is "anti-politics" where people are totally atomised, fearful and hateful of nearly everything- and totally blind to the real problems.

Even though this was recorded over a decade ago, there is nothing in it that is dated. If anything, it accurately predicts the present.

I agree that Chomsky is the conscience of the nation- and I rank him with Thoreau and Emerson. Even if no one else is listening to the truth these days- God is...

5 out of 5 stars Making Our Anger Understood.......2004-08-26

Using the premise "Government is the shadow cast by business on society" (a quotation from John Dewey), Chomsky describes how the corporate class operates almost invisibly behind the veneer of government to instantiate the political and economic conditions that bring it untold prosperity at mounting personal and social costs to the American public. As always, Chomsky backs his claims with abundant evidence, often citing publications that cater directly to the corporate class (e.g. Business Week).

We learn how since the 1970s wages have decreased in real terms even as worker productivity, overtime, and corporate profits have increased significantly. Chomsky then shows how the increasing exploitation of the American workers parallels the decline in union membership and the failure of the USA government to enforce its own laws against employers firing workers that try to organize employees into unions.

Chomsky is best when he shows relationships between his subject matter and other phenomena that seem unrelated. For example, Chomsky traces the "angry American" phenomenon to the felt, but not consciously understood, decline in his standard of living. Instead, the angry American is encouraged to direct his anger at a whole host of illusory devils (e.g. immigration policy) that are not the real source of his grievance. The real source is corporate power manipulating the economic policies of the United States to benefit itself at the cost of the American worker.

Chomsky also shows how the "anti-politics" animus in the USA is an attempt to direct worker frustration at the shadow (government) and not at the source of the shadow (corporate power). American workers are encouraged to distrust government because government is potentially amenable to democratic processes and, therefore, can change (can, in effect, give substance to the shadow that can result in some measure of equity). Whereas, corporations (the source of the problem) cannot be changed democratically because they are, by their very nature, "unaccountable tyrannies."

I have only sketched a small sample of the range of insights and understanding that Chomsky offers in this talk. If you are interested in the condition and history of the American worker, then this CD is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Insightful and powerful but Chomsky has done better.......2002-05-31

This is a very good lecture by Mr. Chomsky but he has done better on the same subject. If you are to buy only one of these lectures check out "Free Market Fantasies: Capitalism in the Real World" by Chomsky. It is clearer and more eye opening than this.

This is a very good lecture and delivers nice points but "Free Market Fantasies: Capitalism in the Real World" brings up more issues and realities that the average Joe never gets through the media.

5 out of 5 stars The Bearer of Bad News.......2001-05-08

Noam Chomsky is one of those oddities among the very priveleged and educated who actually attempts to address real people. Many times he covers topics in which he speaks for people who can't speak, either because they are powerless or dead. The most constant complaint i hear about him is that he treats people like automotons or he never blames the apathy of people alongside the agression of corporations. But, as he points out, individually you are an atom. The solution: Organize.Admittedly, you probably shouldn't put this cd on while you're dancing, and it may seem a little dated, since he devotes time to the Oklamhoma City Bombing, but it's only to point out the unhealthy results of denying people some meaningful and constructive part in their society and it's decision making. I feel that he could have a genuine effect and maybe even be a prime candidate for assassination if he could get away from the periphery, but, alas, i've yet to see any reviews in mainstream publications. At this point i supspect people in power regard chomsky as a nuisance, at best.Hopefully, more people will start to listen to a man who has no trouble formulating thoughts for himself, or even better they'll start to think for themselves.

2 out of 5 stars Talk About Sinking As Low As All Those Immature Boys, Hah?.......2007-03-15

The review by the person below is pretty much of the typical kind of reaction and comments when it comes to these types of issues about songs addressing the opposite sex. To simply break it all down, this is how it all goes: When a woman ridicules a guy sexually, it all just simply means that she is a strong minded, independent and confident woman who will not, excuse the obvious pun, 'settle for less'. Of course if this is all coming from a guy, then it means that he is simply a pathetic, sexist and insecure loser for putting down women. And they would be exactly right about the guy of course, but the exact same goes for Miss Gillette also, who is clearly no better.

As far as for the album itself, I choose not to give it a single star because the music is really very fun and perhaps even a bit of tongue 'n' cheek as well(of course it would never be considerd as such if it were coming from a male performer but I digress). This is basically just an album of enjoyable and very immature pop candy. Perhaps fun for a listen or two, but defiantely not something you would want to hear in your ear constantly unless you have the same kind of mentality as this album presents itself as having. All in all, a fun and dumb little pop album to 'enjoy'.

4 out of 5 stars Correct Perception.......2007-02-06

Gillette is singing about her divine feminine essence. Her rave-club style beat combined with her aggressive lyrics are a beautiful expression of her feminine angst. These songs are a refutation of songs with lyrics that are degrading of women (Eminem anyone? Beasty Boys? Etc...)

She is declaring that women can be as aggressive, independent, judgemental, and sex-seeking as any over-eager, adolescent, overflowing-with-hormones teenage boy. More people should see her as an image of independence in a world of similarities.

1 out of 5 stars Retarded, Juvenile Album.......2006-02-01

The reviewer below says that Gillette made these songs in retailiation for rap and for "dogging women out." Well only a fugly dog of a "woman" would feel dogged out baby.

Any woman as fugly-faced as Gillette with those "ity bity tiny t*tties" (love that line man!) *SHOULD SHUT UP* and not bring more attention to her girly little pathetic frailties and the fact that she was apparently presenting herself as a female dog in heat to guys who then treated her as nothing more and for whom she them gets upset for them being the dogs they were.

There are no really cool beats; at best all you can say is they are "catchy," like a a stupid commerical tune you can't quite readily get out of your head after hearing it, like that damn P.C. Richards tunes. But don't confuse "catchy" with talent. She's a dumb hack man and where is she now? Yeah, thought so.

And take a look today at the stuff rap is making now; its like ten times more vulgar and now playing on the radio. Emenem is singing about backing it up and getting down on all fours and guess what, on the dance floor the stupid hos are doing it!

I think Gillete singing about tiny little ding-dings and warning guys not to touch her is just an attempt to flatter herself and a classic defensive strategy to assuage the painful reality that those with a real manhood would not touch her with a proverbial ten-foot long pole. Seriously, she looks so nasty, like she could be the poster girl for Valtrex with the caption: "I was an STD victim of the 90's club scene but it's not holding me and my aging vagina and ity bity tiny t*tties back today" or "Being fugly with an STD doesn't stop me from thinking I'm still gonna me some.. Valtrex: Just in Case You Do Get Lucky, You Don't Want Them To Really Know"

5 out of 5 stars Great 90s Album!.......2005-12-04

despite the simplistic lyrics, i think this an great album,
a retaliation of sorts against the misogynic attitude of contemporary music -- most notably rap songs, which often degrade women. Though she knows her music will offend some, Gillette says the time is right for her type of message. "Men have been dogging out women like this for a long time, and they expect us just to take it," she says. The songs are really catchy and the lyrics are funny!! Don't listen to the reviewers below, they are just little little scared men, who got a bit defensive

1 out of 5 stars Hilarious yet horrible.......2005-11-27

All I have to say to this is: OH MY GOD.

"If you put your fking hands on me, you might get smoked." <---sad, she's so funny but has no right to say such things LOL since she's quite fugly herself.

This album should be considered an all time melodic CRUNCHER, why this was not a super seller is beyond me. The mastering is great, Shenker, {flawless as usual], shows just what guitars were made for. The musicians involved couldn't have been hand picked or lucked together any better. If you like MSG at all or like crunch to the wall [melodic, not slammy or stupid]. This is a must have CD. Rating 25 stars.

4 out of 5 stars THE GERMAN WONDER BOY !.......2000-04-14

Michael Schenker was born in Germany in 1955. He was mad famous after playing with British band UFO. BUt, after being freed from UFO limits, he went on into a magnific solo career, where his real talents surfaced. This career was plagued by one of the most amazing ammounts of line-up changes I've ever seen (a thing that, as we know, is a certain formula to finish a band or make it loose credibility. But this ercord has 2 great albuns: one recorded in sutdio, the other is live.

3 out of 5 stars mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07

If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.

That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.

To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.

That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."

For the seriously devoted only.
