Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24
This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

"Turn Me On - Deadman".......2007-05-02
Ahhh...Beat Happening! Fun. Deep & Lazy(beach-like)Music.
They just kept getting better with each album they released. Although I do Love their s/t debut with the Bonus tracks - "You Turn Me On" may be my Favorite - all songs just sound warm and full of life!
All throughout Beat Happening's catalauge you notice the same subject matter, which hasn't changed much: Love and loss and Death - kind of similiar to The Vaselines. Both bands have a guy/girl duo with wonderful vocals. Although The Vaselines bring up drugs and religion a bit more. Both bands at times sound Punk to me. The Vaselines sound a bit more Poppy and grungy.
"Tiger Trap" starts off this album with a Grunge shinin'-shoegazin'- guitar sound and Calvin Johnson's mellow inviting voice, not seen as much in earlier releases.
- Although Calvin wrote "Sleepy Head" - Heather sings this song so beautifully. Definitely one of my Favorite Beat Happening songs. A simple & beautiful indie song and a trademark for the Band at least IMO after hearing all of their albums.
Another reviewer wrote the fact that "Hey Day" should close this album and I would agree. It just seems like the Perfect closer. That would be my only gripe on this otherwise perfect release.
"Godsend" and "Noise" may be my other favorite songs; both also sung by Heather who really adds beauty to Calvin's deep vocals.
"You Turn Me On" released in 1992 is Beat Happening's Final album and to me it is their Best!
This Olympia trio begun in the early '80s and released their debut in '85.
Beginning with a lo-fi minimalist sound and slightly progressed with each LP after.
-"You Turn Me On" just sounds more complete with substance and maturity. Simply Beautiful and Oh so Relaxing.
What's forbidden; has been boldly bitten.......2006-08-21
"Tiger Trap" starts out this album. Firstly, this album is a recent favorite, but I find myself finding more and more inside of it during each listen. Calvin's vocals took warming up to (the "creak of a coffin" is a good analogy as any), but tracks like "Noise" and "Sleepy Head" immediately took me in. Concerning the first track now, there's much to take in. Being nearly seven minutes, it breaks the usual twee-pop standard of short tracks populated by quick choruses. Not here, though. The lyrics stroll out and I have to say I really respect the group for putting this track first, as it's quite an appreciated listen; it sets the stage for the rest of the album and what is to be said.
"Pinebox Derby" revolves around a simple drum beat strummed chords, but behind them you can faintly hear a soaring of feedback which compliments the monotone vocals nicely. "Teenage Caveman" picks up where it leaves off (I'd bet money these are the same chords, here)--its upbeat, but sappy and gets even sadder on repeated listens. This may just be my perception talking here, but I think this is slowly becoming the least favorite track for me solely because of how depressed it makes me feel. Still, it's not without its moments. Lewis' vocal harmonies during the choruses are so uplifting as to give an entirely different attitude to the song. She's upfront for the next track, "Sleepy Head", once again with simple lyrics that are the embodiment of the indie twee spirit. ("So get up you sleepy head/ It's time to make the bed/ At least get partially dressed.") Like all of the tracks on this album, this one provides something unique and familiar at once, and it's so lovable. Not to skip over the title track, but I'd rather talk about "Godsend". At over nine minutes, this is Beat Happenings longest, and also best, song. The guitars fill whatever void this album had, or whatever void I feel as I listen to it. Again, Lewis' vocals and lyrics are truly a godsend; they're warm and they make me want to raise a large glowing object into the sky. The vocals go from being nearly a whisper to being lifted by a crane above anything else here. ("I see a tear in your eye/ you don't know why/ you're a godsend.")
"Hey Day" and "Bury the Hammer" I feel should be coupled together, with the latter being another highlight of their entire catalogue. By this point you will realize that the whole album is probably made of four chords, but you also won't care because of how much of a masterpiece of a pop album this is. The title is sung over and over again at the end, and it's weight is so objective that you'll feel that this is the best pop album ever made. It probably is.
My inclination would normally be..........2005-12-25
God, I am a pretentious jerk I HATE the fact that I'm giving the one "other than minimally produced" Beat Happening record 5 Stars...but there it is. This record is brilliant. Though I love even the cutesiest Glasgolympia crap, this is another creature entirely: powerful, adult, redeeming. If you've tried other Beat Happening records and had difficulty tuning in, do try this one.
Career zenith of a band with many great albums.......2004-08-18
Unlike many bands, the more albums Beat Happening made, the better they got. This is the way it is supposed to be, but unfortunately it doesn't usually happen that way. You Turn Me On, to date the final Beat Happening album, shows a level of maturity that the average listener would have had no right to expect, based on their previous, more fun-oriented, recordings. To start with, the songwriters have all but eschewed the three-minute song, and three tracks exceed six minutes, with "Godsend" topping out at nine.
Jangly guitar starts off "Tiger Trap" with a mellowness that we've not seen before in the Happening. Calvin restrains his signature baritone's usual forcefulness but keeps the loving disposition of yore during the one-line chorus of "when I saw you." This song, along with several others on You Turn Me On, have not one but two (count 'em: two!) guitars playing in harmony. The heavier production from regular producer Steve Fisk (with Stuart Moxham of the influential Young Marble Giants) benefits the band wonderfully, also giving Heather's "Noise" vocals an ethereal quality they lacked previously.
The subject matter has not changed dramatically from Beat Happening's previous releases: there are still the love songs and the death songs, sometimes in the same song. How Calvin connects the idea of a children's DIY race ("Pinebox Derby") into the death dirge of that other "pine box" is a prime example of the creativity that comes from this band, and a major reason that they are one of my favorites. The title track combines love and death in one with its Beatles "Paul is dead"-inspired chorus (reportedly what could be heard while playing the beginning of the White Album's "Revolution #9" backwards). Calvin growls "Turn me on dead man" repeatedly and with an intensity that belies the band's surface innocence. (For more dark songs, see Black Candy and selected songs from the rest of the BH oeuvre.)
During repeated listens of these albums, I have come to appreciate Heather's contributions to the band's mix (it's difficult to know what Bret adds, as his offering is understated). Her You Turn Me On songs are no different. "Sleepy Head" is beach music extraordinaire and "Godsend" is, quite simply, an epic of minimalist proportions. Had Calvin sung "Sleepy Head" (which would normally be expected, since he wrote it), it would be an entirely different song. This way, its inherent sweetness shines through. "Godsend" continues this tack, with lyrics that most folks would love to hear being sung about themselves by the one they love -- idealized portraits of love's rose-colored vision. Despite its extreme length, a shorter running time would not have achieved the same blissful effect. I'll even posit that it could go on for six more minutes will no ill effects. It represents the fruition of Beat Happening's musical progression. They have learned the persuasive power of repetition and are not afraid to use it.
"Teenage Caveman" is a rumbling beat-driven romp, featuring Heather's backing of Calvin on the chorus, that allows the band to truly "rise to the top" while they "trade spit till it hurts." Calvin sings Heather's lyrics on "Hey Day" and this is the first song that really sounds like a song from the 1990s, with its heavy melodic-yet-grinding groove. "Bury the Hammer" is solid as well, but I would have preferred it to be placed somewhere else in the mix. "Hey Day" is the ideal ender for this album.
You Turn Me On is the qualitative hight point of Beat Happening output, showing that much more could have been expected from this Olympia trio, had they the interest to keep it going. In that case, we'll have to stick with what we've been given and see Beat Happening as the epitome of the understandably influential, utterly groundbreaking, never overstated, eros-thanatos indie punk band.

LOL.......2004-03-22
I bought this single firstly 'cos I'm a Travis fan, but also cos people said that the cover of Baby one more time was very funny. I heard the entire song, and at the end of it I was like 'OMG, what they've done to that horrible Britney song?. It's brilliant.' So, people, if you like Travis, why don't you buy this single? It's worth not only for the cover, but also for Turn (my 3rd favorite Travis song) and for the beautiful W.D.I.A.R.O.M.
So worth it.......2002-09-06
This CD single is worth buying just to hear what could have been done with "Baby One More Time." Yes, *The Man Who* is an excellent album but it doesn't have this fun cover. You will definitely get [dollar amount] worth of listening pleasure from this CD single. And go buy *The Invisible Band* while you're at it.
better to by The Man Who album.......2001-11-02
I LOVE the song "why does it always rain on me?" but I detest the drunken (literally) screaching that is "Baby One More Time" and so I would recommend buying the full Travis album The Man Who. The entire The Man Who album is quite good and worth the extra money, if only to avoid the other song on this single.
Travis.......2001-08-14
I don't actually have the single, but I did recently purchase "The Man Who" after hearing rave reviews and downloading "Baby One More Time" ... "Why Does it Always Rain on Me" is a great song, simple and pure, about a life gone sad, which could easily have been a pop hit here. "Turn" is a song that is almost as good as the classic Byrds hit "Turn!Turn!Turn" that invokes memories of the song by repeating the word "turn" and, well, by being really good, but definately not trying to impersonate the older song. And then we come to "Baby One More Time". All I can say is, I never knew a trashy Britney Spears song totally devoid of emotion could be transformed into such a beautiful piece of work. To quote the great philisope Calvin of "Calvin and Hobbes", There's treasure everywhere!
Hit Me, Baby.......2000-11-06
Oh, I must say I do like this single. How Travis makes "Baby One More Time" into an excellect song is beyond me, but he does; he makes it a gem. That was the only reason I bought this single, but I was instantly struck by the delightful "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" and realized that Travis is not just a cover-up group. "Turn" is very good as well; each time I listen to it I like it better. This single has earned Travis another fan.

I first heard this song back in September 2001 on 1190 WLIB in New York, and have been in love with it ever since! The mellowness of Kevin's voice really grabbed me. Since this song came out, Kevin had another hit with the caribbean community called "Call me" which was also super-sensational. Thanks Kevin for paving the way for other Soca artists like Rupee, Krosfyah, Iwer George etc. Let's hope that Soca will become just as big as Reggae Dancehall in the U.S. and other countries.
IT"S GONNA BE A "SOCA SUMMER".......2004-06-03
This song has truly been around the caribbean scene for a few years. Today America seeks new flava in the ear...So, it seems soca is now headed in the same direction as Reggae. WOOOOOAH!!!!! If you like this tune then you must check out thisisrupee.com, another soca artist recently signed to Atlantic records....with a hit song "TEMPTED TO TOUCH"...congrats fellas for making the Caribbean proud.

Album Description
Alternative Tentacles is proud to announce the release of Technicolour Mother, San Francisco's Turn Me On Dead Man's anticipated follow-up to God Bless the Electric Freak (Virus 340). TMODM's sophomore effort expands on their signature soundscape of psychedelic peaks and heavy metal/stoner rock depthsÑ"heavydelic" is the band's contribution to the lexicon of music genresÑoffering a more diverse cadre of songs than their debut. The seemingly unlikely team of Eli Crews (Beulah) and Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, Fucking Champs)Ñwith TMODM frontman and songwriting wizard Mykill Ziggy at their sideÑrecorded and produced Technicolour Mother, adding yet another layer to the musical complexity with bigger, fuller production than their debut. Simply put, Turn Me On Dead Man plays heavy crush bliss rock breaking the sound barrier on their own private Lear jet headed straight to hell. So put on your headphones, turn up the volume, and let us turn you on to a place where Rock is religion, and religion is loud!
Customer Reviews:
what arena rock could have been.......2007-07-29
For those who will think that Wolfmother lead the way in reviving 70s stadium rock, let us keep in mind that there are many who make the psychedelic/hard rock era still vital. Whether it's the straight-up, hard-line attitude of Queens of the Stone Age in Songs for the Deaf, or the booty-shaking rock of Zen Guerrilla with Trance States in Tongues, or even the kick-you-in-the-face rock of J.J. Paradise Players' Club on Wine Cooler Blowout, hard rock has been around and is sticking around, and this release by Turn Me On Dead Man just reinforces that truth.
Kudos and praise to Alternative Tentacles, for though they will probably be most known for putting out hard-edge punk from the tastes of former Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra, they have also branched out their catalog to include all kinds of music that I would still categorize as distinctive and original. From the soulful country twangs of Slim Cessna's Auto Club, and even this--one might think that stadium rock would be purely antithetical to guru Biafra, but Turn Me On Dead Man has energy and style that makes them far stronger and heavier than the boring licks of the sell-outs they might even admire. A seminal track on this disc is "Pharmaceutical Rainbows," which goes from scorching to laid back, never without a dose of hyped-up guitar-godism.
Turn Me On Dead Man carry the torch for a genre of music that was never that great, but has fueled a new generation of rockers who would really be able to fill the overgrown ampitheatre with enough blare to make even the most jaded ear bleed.

People You Don't Hear, But Should.......2006-12-24
When I had the time peruse the music stores and flip through the endless choices in the racks, I depended on nothing but instinct, intuition and a cynical view of the highly profiled, promoted and financed musical confetti of the Mega record companies to help me make music decisions for my purchases.
One does not have the time or money to listen to and buy all the music that is desired out of an impossible mass of recordings, but, when I saw this beautifull album years ago ( in vinyl), I had a sense it would be primo. The beautifully understated cover design and presentation made me feel these were people about music.....and I was right. The studio production is spare because little else is needed to augment this wonderfully focused and talented group singing a tight wealth of songs. There is not a wasted track on this album...everyone will have their different views about their favorites, but, it all because of different perspectives. In our current situation in Iraq, and the proposed threat of another military draft in the U.S, "Boys in Blue" has re-emerged as a tremendously timely, poignent, powerful, and beautiful anthem for the plight of the men and women bravely fighting in Irag and Afganistan in the worst of circumstances. This is beautiful music and musicians.
So good...but so obscure........2006-09-06
This very obscure 1987 release features some divine and exquisite Quiet Storm ballads that will please all romantic and smooth Soul fans. "Stay and Let Me Love You", "No Conversation", "Lover's Confessions" and "Turn Out The Lights" are understated but heartfelt tales of love and lust that will soothe your heart and soul. View From The Hill recorded just one album... but it was a near-masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection of remixes for the reggae/dance track........2004-10-11
Finally Atlantic got off of their behinds and put this major pop record out on a cd single with the remixes that were dance floor favorites. This song went to the Top 20 on the club Play chart but was a number one Dance Airplay track for over 6 weeks on that chart. So when this cd single was released it went in at number one Dance Sales knocking George Michael's "Flawless" out. The cd single comes with 5 full dance mixes and 2 radio versions of 2 of the full mixes, They range from flat out house to a reggae inspired house mix. My favorite mix is the Low Tide mix which is most like the original in sound and vibe and is the reason for the 5 stars alone. Excellent mix.
1- E-Smoove Mix (7:17)
2- Lenny B. Mix (5:40)
3- Low Tide Mix (5:09)
4- Bastone & Burnz Mix (6:20)
5- Dj Volume 's North Bank Mix (6:03)--this mix along with the Low Tide Mix features the vocals of Spragga Benz which are not on the other mixes.
6- Lenny B Radio Edit (3:13)
7- Low Tide Radio Edit (3:14)
A fun cd of remixes. The Low Tide Mix being the best.
