Not only is every song here great, it's also the only place you can get "Soul Meeting" on CD as far as I know. That alone makes the price of admission cheap beyond belief.

Solomon Burke fans should do themselves a huge favor and also pick up his "Nashville" disc.

i have a feeling anyone that really is into Burke's music would love this cd. i dont admit to anyone that im not a big fan becuase i get the usual "oh my god what are you talking about solomon burke is amazing." well sorry im only a casual listener at this point and this cd doesnt really do it for me. i bought it for one track "cry to me" and the sound of the CD is much different then the sound that amazon offers as a clip. i can only imagine people that are really into his music loving this as one of their favorites becuase of the true to life sound the album went out of its way to achieve.

The 'Bishop of Soul' serves up a service of pure musical salvation here: from the Country number 'Just Out Of Reach' to the classic 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' (as covered in the movie 'The Blues Brothers'). These tracks have been lovingly restored from the original single recording sessions, with all their raw power, but also with a good sound balance.

This CD pulses with soul: tight brass, great harmonies, and emotive singing by Burke. If you have Otis, Wilson, James Carr, and Aretha in your collection 'The Very Best of Solomon Burke' is a 'must have'.

The Best Tune in "Dirty Dancing".......2004-09-30

"Cry to Me" would have been a not-so-oldie in the year portrayed in "Dirty Dancing". It was used to great effect for Johnny and "Baby's" first lovemaking session (tastefully) but did not appear on the first soundtrack release which it deserved. It is Solomon Burke at his best. (The man also appeared in a cameo role in the movie, "The Big Easy".) He has continued recording 40 years or more after "Cry to Me", the definitive version, was released. The block of music in this album is a great moodsetter. Dim the lights and let the passion of the tunes flood over you.

Versatile, outstanding soul singer.......2004-11-13

Solomon can flat-out sing a lyric and move you. I would love to see him live. However, he did have a problem getting the best material and backing, and he was flipped around into different styles of music. This collection here is outstanding, though, and covers a lot of territory. Solomon didn't have the luxury of having his own band to work with (like Ray Charles, who also could write and arrange his music too). Simply, if you are a soul fan, you should have this or the one CD best of on Rhino, as Solomon is one of the best of all time.

This has a number of great songs on it. And if you don't have "Got To Get You Off My Mind" this anthology certainly has it.

But the 2 LP collection called "If You Need Me/Rock 'n' Soul" has the best of this collection on it as well as many songs better than what is on here. Those LPs just flow together in near perfection with much less chaff than here.

When Solomon purrs in "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)" you are hearing one of the great R&B (or as he would call it R&S) vocalists. These songs are fun, snappy, well-arranged and graced with extraordinary vocals. But you get more of them on that collection than on this one.

This is quite good. But Solomon singing "He'll Have To Go" should not be missed. And several cuts on this one can be.

When a listener has the audacity to include Solomon Burke in the same sentence with Ray Charles and Bobby "Blue" Bland (and I do), there will be critics. To those critics, I simply say this: Listen to the first few notes of "Just Out Of Reach" and then try to tell me that this isn't one of the finest soul voices ever... period. When Solomon Burke is "on", as he is in nearly all of these classics, he's wonderful. And when he's off, and that's very seldom, he's still head and shoulders above many of the more recognizable soul stars. Just my inflated Canadian 2 cents

This collection has most of Solomon Burke's hits from the sixties. Solomon Burke fans will be overtaken with sheer ecstasy while listening to this cd. It has all original hits, not remakes. It will really bring back the memories of the carefree days the past!!

Do yourself a favor, buy a DIFFERENT Solomon Burke disc.......2005-03-12

The quality of Solomon Burke's voice has never been in question, and Burke's singing is pretty much the only redeeming quality that this recording has. The songs themselves are not necessarily bad, but they are saddled with a produciton that includes nearly every cheesy disco cliche in the book. I suppose it worked at the time, but now it sounds horribly dated and makes for a painful listening experience. If you are new to Solomon Burke, this album will leave you with the wrong impression. Try the early Atlantic recordings or his recent albums. DO NOT miss the chance to see him perform live!! If the other reviewer is right about Burke not making any money off this recording, that would be another great reason to avoid this disc.

This is abother re-release of Sidewalks Fences & Walls, produced by Swamp Dog... don't buy it- Solomon Burke was never paid for this recording and will NEVER perform any of the songs on it.
