The Supremes' catalog (as well as that of every other hit-making artist who ever recorded for Motown) has been packaged and repackaged so many times that yet another go-round of the same material would seem pretty uninviting if the music weren't so good. The songs collected here certainly constitute some of the Supremes' prime stuff. But like many of the entries in MCA's 20th Century Masters collection, it's a product of flawed logic. The set is made up entirely of No. 1 hits, except for "Reflections," which charted at No. 2. It's unclear why that song takes precedence over two of the group's other No. 1s, "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" and "The Happening" (both of which end up on Volume 2). The album could have stuck to the Supremes' early period, before Diana Ross became front woman in name as well as in fact. In that scenario, earlier hits could have subbed for "Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together," and those songs saved for a subsequent volume. For years now, Universal has been cranking out basic, mid-priced compilation CD's of artists in their huge catalog of labels. In many cases, these CD's have been welcomed as they have provided overview collections for some artists that have not been collected before or are an improvement, sonically and/or content-wise, over existing product. However, with the myriad of CD's available for supergroups such as the Supremes, there really is no need for this collection but here it is anyway. If by some chance a music fan does not already own a Supremes collection, this would be a decent sampling but unfortunately, the sound quality here leaves a lot to be desired. So while it's hard to dispute getting all number one tunes with one number two side, this CD falls on its face when it comes to how it performs. Much of the early Motown stuff is muddy-sounding and when mastered for lp the high end was pumped up to compensate for the warming effect of going to vinyl. However, use these masters for CD and without the smoothing out effect of vinyl, these sound terribly shrill and harsh. Two of the tracks here, "Baby Love" and "Come See About Me" are particularly difficult to listen to for this reason. Since stereo versions are available on other Supremes' CD's there is little reason to purchase this only to get sound that is inferior to that which can be obtained elsewhere. With their monumental charting success, a second Millennium collection volume was necessary to merely skim off the Supreme's biggest hits and that companion volume to this one is a bit better technically. Nonetheless, neither of these collections offer anything new and are actually a step down. Better Supremes collections are easily found elsewhere and are preferable to these Millennium pieces.

My first Supremes collection purchase on CD. It lacks the warm, full richness I've associated with vinyl.
Deep bass and sharp handclaps but the midrange isn't there.
Is it a bad mixing job or have I just become used to what I hear on the radio?
Compare the snare drum on Phil Collins version of You Can't Hurry Love to the snare drum on this mix.
I know, this isn't about drums but it's difficult to express audio impressions with written words.
I feel the reproduction quality (remix?) of this collection is substandard.
I'm looking for an enjoyable Supremes collection and this isn't it.

I am annoyed with the amount of collections put on Diana Ross and the Supremes. What about the "great underrated" artists like Thelma Houston, "one hit wonder" I think not! Diana Ross is a fine artist but she isn't this great "diva" that she wants everybody to think she is. think about it

The 20th Century Masters collections are infamous for leaving off hits when it comes to many artists. However, this one is pretty well done and put together. Of course, the Supremes had a ton of hits so not everyone of their big songs are here *although a majority are.* Every song on here is instantly recognizable. Everyone knows "Stop In the Name of Love," "Baby Love," and "Where Did Our Love Go." My personal favorite is the great closing track "Someday We'll Be Together." My only complaint is the omission of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." That's probably my favorite song by them and it would've made a good addition. Oh, well.

The Supremes were definitely THE girl supergroup. They paved the way for others such as Destinys Child, Expose, and En Vogue. Very few artists have as many hits to back them up as them.

This was the first Supremes CD I purchased in wanting to hear the "Motown Sound" that I hear on my neighboring oldies station. A substantial amount of the songs on this particular CD are composed by the legendary team of Holland, Dozier, Holland and our carefully crafted to perfection. Hits like `Baby Love', `I Hear a Symphony' and `Where did our Love Go' should forever remain on our radio dials and music shelves as representatives of what was once called soul music. If you would like to experience the disciplined sound that put the Motor City on the map and which put together the mold for all other girl groups to pursue. Buy this CD as a starting point. You will not be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars The Hits, just as you remember them........2007-04-30

        I'm sure that this will be an unpopular position to take, but this is the way "The Best of Diana Ross and the Supremes" SHOULD be heard. The superior mixes at Motown always went to the 45 RPM single, for the way people would be hearing the songs first was on tinny sounding car and personal sized AM radios, and whoever did the stereo mixes obviously didn't know their posterior from their elbow. The evidence bears this out; several songs are longer by up to 10 seconds in their mono mixes, and some, like "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together" and "You Can't Hurry Love" sound absolutely wimpy in stereo. (A decent stereo version of "Someday We'll Be Together" didn't show up on CD until the 2001 reissue/revamping of "Anthology"). In fact, the only decent stereo is found on the remixed "#1s" CD. The only fault I find with the 1995 package is with the truncated versions of "Stoned Love" and "River Deep, Mountain High", which should be heard in their entirety. But that's a small grump. Don't listen to the other reviewers, and buy this CD. It may be mono, but it sounds miles better than the 1986 "Anthology", which was a joke, sound-wise. As a fan, I have them all, but if you must have just one, THIS would be the one to choose.

        I found the above review by S.Robinson to be very informative. This is truly a wonderful career-spanning anthology of the Supremes' greatest hits, and in addition, it contains a number of hard-to find gems from their golden years. HOWEVER, ONLY 8 OF THE 52 RECORDINGS APPEAR IN STEREO. In fact, none of the Supremes' hits can be found in stereo on this collection. The potential buyer needs to be aware that these recordings ARE NOT IN STEREO, even though the insert gives credit to two gentlemen for digitally mastering these CD's. This could have been a really magnificent set, but because someone decided to do it on the cheap, what we have is a collection of truly great tunes presented in very mediocre sound. TOO BAD! THEY REALLY MISSED THE BOAT ON THIS ONE! The potential buyer would be well served to consided one of the other dozens of Supremes' anthologies currently available, and enjoy the sound of these truly great songs as they were meant to be heard IN TRUE (REMASTERED) STEREO!!!

        The reason why I have titled my review like so, is merely because of the fact that this anthology for "America's Sweethearts" is not just another re-release of all their greatest hits. Though all of them are on here.ther rarities and fillers are included. One can hear such material as the previously unreleased, "Send Me No Flowers" and "Long Gone Lover", a filler track from the "Where Did
        Our Love Go?" album. Also featured is another cut of "Buttered Popcorn", that is not the same as featured on the more recent release of the anthology, or even on the box set. Apparently, this, unlike the others, is the previously released single version. Other included songs are "Discover Me (& You'll Discover Love", "You Send Me", "Rmove This Doubt", and others. The last great thing about this album (which is mostly why I bought in the first place)is the fact that the last ten tracks, are all 70's Supremes recordings. At the time when I purchased this compilation, I had only heard the 70's Supremes four greatest hits "Up The Ladder To The Roof", "Stoned Love", "Nathan Jones", and "Floy Joy" (this was before I could get The 70's Supremes Anthology). However, with this 2 disc set, I could hear those again, along with "Everybody's Got The Right To Love", "River Deep Mountain High", "Automatically Sunshine", "Your Wonderful Sweet, Sweet Love", "Paradise", and an even greater piece, my first Scherrie Payne & The Supremes recording (and one of my favorites to this day)"I'm Gonna Let My Heart DO The Walking". True Motown did sort of cheap out on the 70's Supremes recordings, especially with Scherrie's piece of the pie, however, at the time this was all I had, and I cherished it. However, all in all, a great compilation and highly recommendable.
