Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30
Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.
god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17
Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.
Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17
The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.
Excerpts.......1999-12-23
This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.
Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01
I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

Customer Reviews:
Fun and Refreshing.......2006-03-05
I purchased this CD on a whim, and I was absolutely shocked when I got to track #4- "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel," by the cast of "Hairspray." I loved the upbeat humor, and as the song progressed, I realized I'd heard this version before- it was on South Park! I could not BELIEVE what I was hearing, but I completely adored it. As I listened through the rest of the 2-CD set, I concluded it would undoubtedly be one of my favorite holiday albums. It was a wonderful combination of traditional renditions, such as a beautiful "O Holy Night" performed by the cast of "Rent" and new, humorous songs, including "Too Fat to Fit" by the cast of "The Producers" which was had a personality reminiscent of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," "Angelo Rosenbaum," sung by Thom Christopher Warren of "Lion King," and "Sing Out" by the cast of "Gypsy."
Overall, the CD set was a wonderful surprise; I had expected a 2 CD set filled with well-sung music, but I was rewarded with a compilation as diverse as peoples' view of the holidays, ranging from the somber expression of religious value to the whimsical, with a jab at the commercial attitude in the middle!

Customer Reviews:
Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21
No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

Nice cross-over.......2003-03-09
There is only a single track on "The Kiri Selection" that didn't come from one of her other releases, and that is "The World You're Coming Into" from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. The rest of her songs can also be heard on "Kiri Sings Gershwin," "Come to the Fair - Folk Songs & Ballads," "From Heart to Heart" with Malcolm McNeill, and "Kiri Sings Kern."
It's a jumbled mixture but Dame Kiri negotiates the songs with a light, brilliant touch, never bringing too much heavy operatic artillery to bear on what are essentially popular songs. For those of you who are not operatically inclined, you may remember this lovely soprano from the 1981 marriage ceremony of HRH the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer. Te Kanawa sang "Let the Bright Seraphim" (and wore a very strange hat).
Unlike some sopranos (my chorale director says Dame Joan never sang a consonant throughout her entire career), Kiri is scrupulous about her intonation and you will be able to understand almost every syllable she sings. My personal favorite is her rendition of Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes:" "They said some day you'll find,/ All who love are blind,/ When your heart's on fire,/ you must realize,/ Smoke gets in your eyes." She sings with intense pathos, yet a little tremble of courage. I can just see her sitting in some chic '30s cocktail lounge, head (with that outrageous hat on it) held high while her friends chaff her about her unfaithful love. She reaches up to brush the smoke or tears from her eyes and pretends to laugh away a remark that was much too personal.
When Kiri sustains a note, she does something with it. She doesn't just sit on it à la Pavrotti and let us admire her beautiful voice. She interprets every nuance of the lyrics, unlike some of my very favorite opera singers who don't cross over into popular music very well, e.g. Domingo, Ramey, Norman, and Dame Joan.
Te Kawana fans, unless you already own all four of the albums mentioned above, this CD is definitely worth your while. Kern and Gershwin enthusiasts will also find interpretations to treasure.
Top Performance.......1999-06-16
I have only just purchased this CD, and I'm in love with it already! Kiri's voice is so incredibly versatile, that you are just STUNNED by her ability to sing Gershwin, Kern and others like a jazz singer. She's incredible, and so's the recording. I'd recommend it to anyone, as Kiri's best CD outside of her West Side Story and full opera performance CD's. Her duet with Malcom O'Neill is amazing, and the way she interperets Gershwin's hits is so neat - far better than I've ever heard. The only SLIGHT moan I would have is that in one or two of the songs, she is a little to far away from the mic, and the orchestra are a little loud. But considering how great she sounds - does it matter? Make this your next Kiri CD purchase.

Golden Age Singing.......2001-02-21
In very good live-performance sound, this generous (74 minutes) selection of highlights boasts the finest Carmen cast and conductor I have ever heard in one production. Verrett's is the only performance not duplicated on a commercial set, and she is spectacular--as close to the perfect "Carmen voice" as any I have experienced. Te Kanawa's gorgeous sound is likewise unmatchable, even on her complete recording with the same conductor. Van Dam is perfection, and Domingo even better than one has come to expect. A word about the excerpts: they include all of the big "numbers," as well as enough ensemble work to allow one to fully appreciate the conducting of the great Sir Georg. Considering the modest cost, this disc is unbeatable.
A GREAT PERFORMANCE.......1999-10-29
Verrett is the best Carmen imaginable, Domingo the best Don José, Kiri the best Micaela and Solti it's a grand conductor. The ideal Carmen.

The best of her 70's albums on one CD, , , ,.......2007-04-22
What's striking about "Diana/The Boss" is how different these two CDs are. On 1979's "The Boss," Ross was once again paired with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" producers (Nicholas) Ashford and (Valerie) Simpson, who concoct the kind of fiery, motown-influenced pop-gospel numbers (updated with a dash of disco rhythm thrown in) that force Ross to sing out with the kind of electrifying power that we hardly knew she was capable of! Uptempo songs like "The Boss," "No One Gets the Prize" and "I Ain't Been Licked" are sung with fierce determination. Signature ballads like "I'm In the World" and "All For One" are emotionally-driven and poignant, impressive breakaways from Ross' charm-school sweetness. The emotion on "The Boss" is then converted to pure rhythmical energy on "Diana," her 1980 Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers (of the group Chic)smash that was undoubtedly her biggest selling solo record. Ross' surehanded coolness is just right for this duo. We're all familiar with "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" but also notable are "Have Fun" "My Old Piano" and the tricky rhythms of the slowed down "Friend to Friend." There is not a single track here that you want to skip over. All in all, this is Ross at her very best during the 1970's and a must-have!!!
Possibly DIana Ross' Best Pair Of Albums.......2006-05-15
By the end of the 1970's Diana Ross' recording career was back on shaky ground. Her studio albums, the excellent Baby It's Me (1977) and the hodge podge production of Ross (1978) had sold disappointingly. Not only that but her third silver screen venture The Wiz (1978) performed badly at the Box Office and became something of an embarassing fiasco to all concerned, not least to Ross who was virtually ridiculed by critics.
Diana Ross always had that drive, determination and uncanny ability to bounce back no matter what set back her career endured (and she certainly has had more than her fair share of set-backs, especially in more recent years). At the fall of 1979 she wisely focused her attention on fixing her flagging recording career. As it stood, she hadn't had a major chart hit since 1976 with the exciting, tempo-shifting Disco classic, Love Hangover which topped both the Pop/R&B Charts and became one of the definitive Disco/R&B classics of the decade.
For her 1979 studio entry, Ross teamed back up with that dynamic duo, Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. These pair of genius singers/songwriters/producers/composers had weaved magical results on her solo studio albums Diana Ross (1970) and Surrender (1971), now definitive classics in Ross' catologue.
The project would be aptly titled The Boss. Ashford and Simpson once again captured the full extent and range of Ross' vocal abilities. She sounds stunning, soulful and in perfect Disco Diva mode throughout all eight of these superb, timeless recordings.
The Boss (1979) was like some form of statement on Ross' part. Feeling frustated by her controlling boss and one-time lover Berry Gordy, she purposely made sure that he had nothing to do with this project which some may say was Ross being difficult and tempremental but infact all she was actually doing was trying to exert her independence and prove not only to her audience but to herself that she could be her own person away from Berry Gordy and not just a mere product of the churning Motown machine. There once solid working and personal relationship was now floundering as Ross was growing as a person and was becoming increasingly more confident at the idea of controlling her own career. Diana Ross and Berry Gordy were two of the twentieth centurys most important figures in music that had helped change and shape the whole face of black music but the fact that for the first time in her career Berry Gordy had nothing to do with this project only hastened to drive a further rift between them which eventually led to Ross quitting Motown Records for pastures new.
Still despite the on-going trials and tribulations behind the scenes, The Boss album was triumphant and catapulted Ross back onto the music scene. The album saw a new hip, sassy, confident and more womanly Diana Ross and gain a whole new generation of fans.
No One Gets The Prize literally exploded onto the Disco scene, becoming an instant club hit. This rapidly led to the track becoming the albums premiere single. Ross' razor sharp delivery rides along a tidal wave of Funk-driven rhythms and hits high notes I previously hadn't known she could hit. Never before had Diana Ross sounded so pure and soulful. Her soft, silky voice brims with self-assurance, cutting through the hard-driving, pounding musical arrangements. No One Gets The Prize is an out and out Disco/R&B classic despite surprisingly never actually becoming a major chart hit on the mainstream charts.
Ross the Disco Diva gets down into boogie wonderland again on the Funk-ridden, sexually charged, I Ain't Been Licked. Her performance shifts direction as she begins sounding a little vulnreable but rises with the musical arrangements to shining self-assurance. Her voice is charged with fire and soul on I Ain't Been Licked and its hard to believe this never became a hit.
The exalting ballad All For One was, at one time, a number Ross loved to perform at her live concerts. Her angular vocals reach new heights as she pushes her vocals fowards forcefully and sounds vibrant and at her best on that dazzling crescendo.
Anyone who has qualms about Ross not being a soulful singer or not sounding black enough (what is that supposed to mean anyway?) will eat humble pie on just one listen of her impressively strong, seemingly acrobatic performance on the raging Disco masterpiece, The Boss. She begins the song in a breathy, seamless sound and then effectively alters vocal pitch as the second verse builds to the chrous. Ross smartly moves along to the sharp grooves and pumping, pulsating rhythms. Riotously funky! The Boss stands as one of her best ever Disco classics ranking alongside other such renowned greats in the Ross catologue, Love Hangover (No.1 Pop/R&B 1976), Upside Down (No.1 Pop/R&B 1980) and I'm Coming Out (No.5 Pop/No.1 R&B 1980). The Boss like No One Gets The Prize enjoyed mammoth club success though disappointingly only made it to No.19 on the U.S Billboard Charts (No.40 in the U.K.), despite being one of her all-time major classics.
The entrancing Once In The Morning, a hypnotic Funk-Disco affair, found Ross back in Love Hangover mode as the song somehow re-captures the vibe of that track. Ross delivers a hot, breathy, erotic performance as she neatly surfboards along the somewhat complex musical arrangements. Once In The Morning emerges as one of the major highlights of The Boss not to mention another masterpiece to credit Ashford and Simpson for.
The delightful Funk sounds of the catchy, though more intricate, It's My House has Ross yet again in glorious voice sounding so perfectly compatable with the breezy orchestrations. It's My House was one of the songs that made a strong declaration of her independence and thats what made her put in such a passionate vocal performance on the track. Though It's My House was only a relatively small hit (creeping to No.32 in the U.K) this stands as another out and out classic (and no i'm not being biased as a Ross fan).
Sparkle is far more glossy and extremely sophisticated. This exotic ballad is ignited by Ross' mesmerising vocal delivery and the exhilirating musical arrangements which is broken up at the bridge of the song by a sensational saxophone interlude.
I'm In The World is almost triumphant and encapsulates a sound of the more showbizzy material Ross delved into on at her live concerts in the 1970's. Ross is more self-assured and confident than ever on this track and proves she can hold a note. Diana Ross may not possess the power and volume of a singer like Aretha Franklin but her vocal delivery is distinctive, crystal-clear, unique and without doubt has soul. I'm In The World neatly closes this rollercoaster ride of an album on a fittingly sophisticated high.
Ashford and Simpson provided the enhancing gospel-like vocals along with Ulland McCullough and Raymond Simpson. The multi-talented Valerie Simpson is also credited for playing those gentle piano backdrops on each track. Jamming away on that pounding percussion are Sammy Figueros and Errol Bennet whilst working hard away on those pulsating basslines are Anthony Jackson and Francisco Centeno. John Sussewell provides those pattering drum beats where as Michael Bealer plays the gorgeous saxophone interludes through each track which reaches full effect on the ballad, Sparkle.
Berry Gordy deliberately did little to promote this album in retaliation to Ross' refusal to let him have anything to do with the project but The Boss went onto become a big hit regardless. Diana Ross was back bigger and better never having looked or sounded so great. One of the jewels in her crown. The Boss was certified Gold by the RIAA. One of the major highlights of her long-standing and illustrious career.
Soul diva, Diana Ross had not fully been recognised by critics as an important albums act at the point when diana had been released. Her studio albums had always drawn a mixed critical response though some met wide acclaim such as her magnificent and totally stunning debut, Diana Ross (1970), Lady Sings The Blues (1972), the absolutley superb and divine Diana Ross (1976) and The Boss (1979). Though The Boss was a critical and commercial success, her studio albums before that, Ross (1978) and Baby Its Me (1977) were not big sellers and both bombed in the U.K, failing to chart altogether.
What Diana felt she needed to bring her flagging career up to date was a change of direction. She immediatley turned to the dynamic combination behind Chic, Benard Edwards and Nile Rogers - the hottest R&B producers of the day. It was decided to mould the traditional Diana Ross sound into mainstream Funk and Disco. Diana Ross was certainly no stranger to great dance music having hit No.1 on the BillBoard Charts in 1976 with the exciting Love hangover and enjoying Top 20 success with the magnificent, The Boss in 1979. It seemed a logical step and proved a fruitful collaboration though the album did not go by without its fair share of problems. Having heard the finished result of the album, Diana immediatley felt as though her vocals were pushed too far into the background and said that she felt as though she sounded like a guest vocalist on her own album. She proceeded to take the album and remixed it herself with the aid of Russ Terrana. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards were furious that their work had been tampered with and wanted to completley disassociate themeselves with the project but before they knew it, the diana (1980) album was out on the streets and was selling rapidly quick!
The premier single was the fabulous Upside Down. The song sounded rather like a nursery rhyme set to hot, compelling disco music with its catchy chrous - "upside down/boy you turn me inside out and round and round". These ingredients obviously worked as Upside Down catpulted into pole position on the Billboard charts and was narrowly beaten to the top spot in the U.K where it peaked at No.2. Dianas razor sharp performance was remarkably efective and its fair to say that no one could have done Upside Down quite like Diana Ross who has always been in a class of her own.
The projects second release was the even stronger and triumphant, I'm Coming Out. This was a song seemingly screaming out about her newly found indpendence and could even be described as a direct message to Motown as the following year Diana left for pastures new for a reported $20,000,000 deal with RCA Records. Dianas performance on I'm Coming Out was assertive, strong and passionate and has since become one of her most enduring and definitive classics. The song also became something of a gay anthem and suported Dianas status even greater as a gay icon. I'm Coming Out went Top 5 in the U.S whilst gliding in at No.13 on the U.K Singles Charts.
Another two singles were lifted in the U.K with the exalting My Old Piano which is stunningly orchestrated and magnificently sung by Diana. This solid classic became a Top 5 hit in the U.K. a market in which she has always been a consistent seller. The rhythmically divine Tenderness was released two years later in 1982 (by which time she was enjoying success with the Silk Electric album on RCA) and stalled within the Top 75, peaking eventually at a measly No.73. This may have had something to do with its belated release but even so Tenderness is another outstanding track, containing undertones of red hot, pulsating funk.
The aching Friend To Friend is performed beautifully by Diana and the ballad on the whole is remarkably effective with its simplistic approach where as Have Fun (Again) is purley infectious and was Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards initial choice for a release as a single. The red hot rhythm bubbles beautifully with Diana certainly sounding like shes having a whole lot of fun on the recording where as the sparse production of Now That You're Gone was another highly effective ballad with its striking and almost mesmerising musical arrangements.
One of the highlights of the diana album though has to be the rip-roaring, riotously funky Give Up. Diana just lets her hair down and belts this out with all her heart and soul and has never sounded so powerful on record before. Give Up closes the diana album superbly, rounding this off as a red hot, riotously funky, compelling album that you will just play over and over again.
diana (1980) quickly raced into the U.S Top 3 album charts whilst merrily bouncing into the U.K Top 15. The album became something of a landmark in her career and remains her biggest selling studio album to date. Though she made other masterpieces in the 1970s with Diana Ross (1970), Surrender (1971), Lady Sings The Blues (1972), Diana Ross (1976) and The Boss (1979) this stands as her best studio set at Motown and quite possibly the greatest of her career to date. A solid piece of work and a pure masterpiece!
