When Robert Cray and the Fabulous Thunderbirds turned their similar combinations of Texas blues and Memphis soul into hit records in 1986, bar bands all across this land thought they had glimpsed the promised land of a long-awaited blues revival. There has been a flood of soul-blues releases since then, many of which have been respectable, even admirable, but they have lacked the two essential ingredients that gave the genre its artistic peak 30 years ago, as well as its brief resurgence 20 years later--terrific songs and outstanding singers. Delbert McClinton's One of the Fortunate Few has both those elements. The guest vocalists include Mavis Staples, Lyle Lovett, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, and Vince Gill, but it's McClinton's own coarse-grained Texas baritone--as supple as a snake and as definitive in its bite--that dominates the soundscape. And it's McClinton's co-producer and cowriter, Gary Nicholson, who makes the difference in the material. Nicholson, whose day job is writing mainstream-country hits, indulges his blues jones at night and has come up with rollicking uptempo numbers and gospel-drenched ballads.

Most importantly, Nicholson's lyrics contain both the irreverent wit that Cray lacks and the confessional angst lacking in the T-Birds. The humor crackles in McClinton's belt-it-out vocal on "Old Weakness (Coming on Strong)" and an aching need is felt in his restrained duet with Staples on "Somebody to Love You." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Delbert at his best!.......2007-03-25

This album rocks! There is only one cry in your beer song. The rest boogie.

1 out of 5 stars half-baked blues.......2007-01-15

where is the title tune? why is it missing from this CD?

poorly-written tunes. this whole thing comes across as bogus to me.

want the real blues? won't find it here.

The only reason I bought this CD is because I wanted to hear ONE OF THE FORTUNATE FEW--but guess what??? It isn't on this CD.

I want my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Except for the misleading title..........2007-01-04

This is an excellent Delbert CD; HOWEVER! If you're looking for his SONG "One Of The Fortunate Few", it's not on this album. THAT little ditty is on his album "Cost Of Living", which is worth its cost, just for that one track, although the rest of the CD is Delbert at his best!

5 out of 5 stars One of Delbert's Best Albums!.......2006-12-07

I bought this fifth album of Delbert McClinton's expecting to be entertained and wasn't disappointed. It has turned out to be one of my favorite collections, from the catchy tune "Too Much Stuff", to the more serious song, "You Were Never Mine".

Definitely a winner!

4 out of 5 stars Delbert always fun to listen to, here is no different.......2005-10-26

Delbert McClinton has one of those great bluesy voices that sounds so "regular" that you think you could do it, but in reality its got a depth and quality that is hard to match. On this album he really has some fun, and that howl is unmistakable. Sending Me Angels is a personal fave with him getting help from country greats Vince Gill on vocals and Lee Roy Parnell on slide guitar. Old Weakness calls to mind the fun lovin Stones classic honkytonk woman. and Leap of Faith cheesy as it might sound can perk up a dreary day with no problem.

It's tempting to think these duets, which Handel composed at various points in his career, are just chips from the master's block. But they constitute a delightful hour's worth of music, and when sung with the vocal brilliance and stylishness displayed here by ten top singers in various pairings, they add up to one of those rare discs it's hard to stop returning to. Handel must have thought a lot of them too--since he reused some of this music for oratorios like Messiah--and turned to the chamber duet form in his last years as well. There isn't a weak link among the soloists, though the contributions of Natalie Dessay, Veronique Gens, and Sara Mingardo are especially noteworthy. Whether asked to sing plaintive laments or flashy coloratura displays, these well-matched voices thrill. The accompaniments (harpsichord or organ, lute and cello) are faultless. The appeal of this disc extends far beyond Baroque specialists to anyone who enjoys outstanding singing. --Dan Davis

If you are not a great fan of Haendel, pass! It's interesting but not the best 'job' of Haim...

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Females Guide Handel's Lesser Known Arcadian Duets.......2005-05-27

Ten world-class singers have been assembled for this 2002 anthology of Handel's chamber duets, nine in all. The selections are sometimes in two movements but more often in three contrasted movements with various changes in tempo, as they tell sometimes disheartening, sometimes effusive tales of the effects of love. They all have the familiar pastoral feel that Handel often brings to his compositions, and these, in particular, are inspired by the Arcadian academies and courts of Italy at the end of the 17th century. Led by Emmanuelle Haïm, this recording intelligently uses many distinct voices to lend individuality to each of the selections, in contrast to, say, the recent 2004 Handel duets CD in which soprano Patrizia Ciofi and mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato ambitiously tackle an almost overwhelming variety of Italian opera duets just by themselves.

All the women here are excellent. The particular standouts are French sopranos Natalie Dessay and Véronique Gens on the opening duet, "Ahi, nelle sorte umane" with their bright voices intertwined with deep, intense feeling; the lightness of Laura Claycomb's soprano matched with the superb fullness of Sara Mingardo's contralto on "Tanti strali al sen mi scocci" and again on the concluding "Sono liete, fortunate"; and the similarly contrasting performances of soprano Patricia Petibon and contralto Marijana Mijanovic on "A mirarvi io son intento". The two men featured are somewhat disappointing but only by comparison - tenor Paul Agnew sounds a bit unctuous and lead-footed against Petibon's ethereal silvery tones on "Caro autor di mia doglia", and countertenor Brian Asawa, despite a purity in tone, sounds dramatically constrained on "Conservate, raddoppiate", his brief duet with soprano Juanita Lascarro. Regardless, the overall mood of the recording is appropriately sonorous and for the most part, period-authentic except for Haïm's organ which is used to sparing dramatic effect. As she has proven with her wondrous direction of an equally stellar cast on the 2003 Virgin Classics recording of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas", Haïm provides intense musical leadership among a varied set of talents with the able accompaniment of her ensemble, Le Concert d'Astrée.

3 out of 5 stars Something's not quite right in the state of Arcadia..........2004-04-30

I saw this CD with deep interest, and purchased it without a second thought. The singers listed on the recording included some strong favourites of mine, and since I may be recording some of the Handel duets on this album this year, I was looking forward to hearing other interpretations of the music.

I was... not entirely disappointed, but sadly not captivated.

I found some of the accompaniments to the duets to be heavy-handed and almost paternalistic in their approach, particularly when the organ was employed. And stylistically, some of the singing was just... wrong. In particular, the flights of Natalie Dessay (who has done some gorgeous things - her Lakmè is ravishing) jarred. On reflection, I do not consider Dessay to be an ideal singer for the repertoire - she does much better in the 19th century French works and in coloratura Strauss roles, where she shines like a cluster of diamonds.

Although some of the singing here with the various singers was beautiful, it was not uniformly good, and in particular the duet work seemed under-rehearsed. Tightness in ensemble singing, even when it's 2 voices as opposed to more, is a MUST. There was no true blend present with any of the duet singing, but this was a problem that occurred more in some of the tracks than in others.

I could recommend this disc for its rarity value - Handel's duets are splendid stuff! - but not for the performances in the main. I wish I could have been more positive. I can only say that at least this disc is mostly better than another recording of Handel duets which I possess. Perhaps this CD is worth having for the repertoire, and one can always skip the particularly "not very good" tracks...

You'll know them when you hear them. Just listen for the wobble.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and artistic.......2003-12-29

Much of Handel's work is borrowed into these pieces. This album is very well recored and beautifully sung. The many singers make this a real work of passion. Haim is musician and conductor is reaching new levels. This is one of the truly artistic albums of 2003. One could spend serious time studying the phrasing and note so many of the endings have a Handel's signature. This is the definitive Arcadian Deuts album.

I note it is diffucult for me to randomly select pieces from this album. It is best taken like a good meal, from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Haendel 'di chiesa'.......2003-08-05

The most famous male conductor of the moment offers, in her new recording, a selection of Handel's religious duets. With a chamber formation of her ensemble, Le concert d' Astrée (here wiyh only 3 musics, and Haim sit at the harpsichord and the organ) and with a very big formation of 10 famous solists: 6 sopranos, 2 altos, 1 countertenor and 1 tenor (all of them very experts in the barroque repertory) Haim makes a great recording, and she wins a lot of congratulations by me. A great disc tath all barroque lovers must have.

Maxwell has a knack for bringing a wealth of emotion into his songs. "Fortunate" is no exception. "Fortunate" is a beautiful song about a man's love for a woman and how grateful and fortunate he feels to have her love. Maxwell's delivery is impeccable and the way he uses his voice to convey his message will send shivers through you! I would highly suggest buying this CD if you want to hear a highly passionate and romantic song! You won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love the song Fortunate and the sound of your voice.......1999-08-31

I am a huge fan of yours and I hope to someday meet you. You're very down to earth with your music and I can honestly say that I feel you with your music. It has been a long time since a music artist had me sit up and take notice, so I consider you "FORTUNATE". It's a fairly easy song and anyone can sing along to it, but only you can give it that certain style and finesse that makes it a number one hit on the charts. I listened to that song as it made number one on the countdown, and it' still hanging on even though it's not number one anymore. But know this, "FORTUNATE" will always be number one in my household.

5 out of 5 stars Favourite new, Neo-Soul Artist.......2006-09-05

Why hasn't Lathun blown up more since his debut on BET? This guy is super talented, since he composes and plays guitar for his songs, and has been doing it since his earlier years. Apart from my other favourite Neo-soul artist, Maxwell, Lathun has hit the spot on every song with his beautiful grooves and sweet guitars in the background (especially on Sweetest Thing). He's held his own when it comes to originality and with a voice like that...man...the ladies must be all over him. My favourites include BBQ (layed back, perfect for a late summer BBQ), Find Somebody Else, Closer (wicked hard beat), Forever One Flesh (romantic, perfect to play for the one you love), Fortunate (the BEST song on the CD), Didn't I, and Official (makes you wannna get a wifey). His lyrics aren't juvenile or simple. Conversely, they are quite sophisticated and elegant - some, like Fortunate, sound like a beautifully written poem transformed into a silky-smooth love song. Another album well worth my hard-earned money.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER SLEPT ON GEM.......2005-12-02

Even being India Arie's labelmate didn't help this brotha to get some exposure. Damn shame. This cat has a very dynamic voice and I hope to hear from him again. Standout cuts are: "Fortunate", the beautiful "Forever One Flesh", "Didn't I", and the funky "Love Won't Let Me." A nice CD to add to your Neo Soul repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars Great Voice.......2005-04-13

Nice production work! He sounds like Dave Hollister with a tad more grit! `Very soulful...with a tinge of gospel influence. I bought this cd on a whim and I'm pleased I did...he's quite talented! The song "Didn't I" caught my attention on AOL radio and I've been a fan since! Hopefully, this won't be his last solo project.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Soothing.......2004-09-26

The first time I heard about him was on Red Star Sounds Vol. 1. I didn't really know who he was, but then I got his album, and he blew me away. He reminds me of Dave Hollister, and his voice just wraps itself around your ears, and whispers sweetness. Will definitely recommend this album to others.

In the last decade or so, remaking classic movies has been on the incline. Though older generations criticize remaking these films, the newer generations are happy to see them with the latest theatrical technology. The remake I am going to be reviewing is called "The Manchurian Candidate". In my opinion, the remake is superior to the original. Though the acting was great in the original, I am more of a fan of Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.
The synopsis of the movie is this: Captain Bennett Marco (Denzel Washington) and Sgt. Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber) were part of a platoon of soldiers kidnapped and brainwashed in Desert Storm. Ten years later, Shaw, a "war hero", runs for vice president while Marco, label paranoid by the government, eventually remembers being kidnapped and discovers that Shaw's mother (Meryl Streep) played a big part in the brainwashing. Bennett must now convince Shaw that the brainwashing really happened. Washington does a superb job as the hero; he isn't the flashy, perfect hero that we usually see in movies these days. Schreiber also does an excellent job in this movie as well. His character is the innocent victim. He is a good person but is under the control of his evil, power-hungry mother. Streep steals the show though. Her character is so manipulative and evil that is was just great to watch. The director, Jonathan Demme, does an excellent job guiding this movie along. The camera work that he utilizes really adds to the suspense of the film.
Overall, I think that any fan of suspense movies should go out to see this film. It is very creepy in the beginning and then gets better as you figure out what is going on. The actors all give an excellent performance and are lead by a great director.

    4 out of 5 stars "1962 plus the 2004 ~ Manchurian Candidate is a winner!".......2004-10-06

Varese Records presents two versions of "The Manchurian Candidate", both are excellent films with a great cast, directors and score that will leave you with something to think about.

The first "Manchurian Candidate" (1962/126 mins), Director John Frankenheimer featuring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury, James Gregory, John McGiver and Leslie Parrish in a cult favorite of Cold War Intelligence mixed with a political assassination attempt ~ Harvey's portrayal as a brainwashed soldier is believably effective, his stepfather James Gregory (Senator Iselin) as the not to bright politician is a scene stealer ~ Harvey's domineering Mother played by Angela Lansbury is an Academy Award performance, when she's on screen her evil schemes cut right through you ~ with composer David Amram throwing cues at you "QUEEN OF DIAMONDS", "SLIGHTLY MANCHURIAN BLUES" and "MESOPOTAMAN MAMBO...but my pick from this score is "THEME FROM THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, the jazz version is a sure-fire winner with over five minutes of great JAZZ!

Second score from "Manchurian Candidate" (2004/130 mins), Director Jonathan Demme featuring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schrieber, Jon Voight and Kimberly Elise with an update of a classic thriller ~ Washington's facial and shifting eyes lends an intense factor to this remake, and it works ~ the score by Rachel Portman and Wyclef Jean with cues like "FORTUNATE SON" [instrumental], "MIND DRUGS", "DEEP IMPLANT BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION", "WHAT IF ALL THIS IS A DREAM?", "THERE ARE ALWAYS CASULATIES IN WAR" loaded with psychological-political themes and biting assassination spell-binding plots keeps you on the edge of your chair...presidential election mixed with mental illiness that Portman's score covers, as she crosses every "T" and dots all of the "I'z"...don't miss picking up this soundtrack...a must have for all "film-score-buffs" and collectors alike!

    5 out of 5 stars simply a masterpiece.......2005-08-19

Frogg Café is really shaping their sound closer to excellence with their third album. Their previous effort "Creatures" was also very good but this one simply is a masterpiece.

While the band is mostly compared to The Flower Kings, I think there's more to it in their music. Fusion parts which can be heard very often, the Zappa-esque psychedelic approach, the atonal and sometimes dark melodies not unlike King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator, some folky tunes in the best Jethro Tull tradition, and some Yes, Gentle Giant, and Genesis influences and all these combined with great skill are some of the elements what make this album a feast for all retro-proggers. With this album, I'm sure they won't need to hide behind the scene's famous bands anymore, because I think that they are already one of them.

Wait! I'm not finished. The band cleverly incorporates violin, flute, and trumpet into their sound. And these contributions are not like a guest spot. They can be heard throughout the album very often. One thing that caught my ear was that when the violin comes to the front, the music gets some tendencies to master Jean Luc Ponty. But IMHO the trumpet steals the show and is one of the reasons what make this band so fascinating. Does the name "Miles Davis" tell you people something?

This is not pure prog! I'd rather call it as prog/fusion but it's more than that while preserving the prog roots. If you love prog, and have some tendency for fusion and jazz, then this is your album. Highly recommended for any prog rocker!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2002-05-06

The first three tracks alone are worth the price of the cd: From
the upbeat and romantic title track, to the saucy "Spike Heel", to the smoky & slinky "Broken Nose". Other personal favorites are
the jazzy "Rain for Days", "Grasshopper" (an old fable with a new twist), and "Retrograde". Overall the whole CD is a good listen and a whole lot of fun!

As a side note, I had the good fortune of seeing Ms. Garniez &
company play at a small performance art venue in Cambridge Mass circa spring of '01, and she is every bit as good live as she is on her cd. Catch her if you can!

4 out of 5 stars James Bowman forever.......2000-06-29

An article title about James Bowman said "A singer in high places" - and it's so true.

James Bowman is a great singer, and one of my favourite performers. One can listen to his CDs over and over again, without tiring.

He feels at home in both English songs and other languages. This CD is a "summary" of some other collection CDs of him.

ýIN SHORT: Good buy for lovers of vocal music, or the baroque and classical. If you don't know his singing, you're missing a lot, and this CD is a great start.
