5 out of 5 stars 88, a great year for music.......2005-11-01

I recently listened to this album out of curiosity for the first time, not knowing what to expect. It was recommended to me for being a DM fan. I was BLOWN AWAY! I love this CD!
In my opinion, it's everything good music shoud be.
Poetic, Artistic, political, mysterious and all delivered in a sleek, cool, ambiguous package. Anyone who likes new wave or electronic definitely has to add this to their collection.

What a perfect album. Fans of iris de/vision need to buy this. these guys rule.

MY FAVORITE ALBUM EVER!!!
FORGET THE COMPARISONS TO DEPECHE MODE, CAMOUFLAGE HOLD THEIR OWN. GREAT VOCALS, MELODIES AND LYRICS.

5 out of 5 stars Solid 80's Techno.......2005-02-22

A lot of people jibe about how Camouflage just tries to be like Depeche Mode. While Camouflage's sound can only be described as DM-esque this album has a very different sound than that of DM if you stop to really listen to more than just effect. That being said if you had to compare Depeche Mode would still be the superior songwriters, however Camouflage has a style and structure that sets them apart from their apparent peers. This music I suppose can be called industial/techno, however it's a bit lighter than the hard-edged industrial groups of the day like Bigod 20, Nitzer Ebb or Ministry. So yeah... Depeche Mode kind of industrial/techno.

Voices and Images probably is their most well defined album in regards to the genre. The music is straight electronic of that day and anybody who's into that genre can appreciate this album. The beats are solid and punchy. The synths are a combination of hard syncopation and breathy voxes. The lyrics are thoughful and have an edge of social commentary on them. No superficial lyrics or fluffy love songs in here, but that's a good. It's always refreshing to broaden your scope.

Anybody who clubbed in the late 80's knows THE GREAT COMMANDMENT. Definitely a great song that epitomizes the Voices and Images sound. While I find many times the "hits" of an artist aren't always their best work I would be hard pressed to say that here. TGC combines a tight beat with opposing bass lines and the Camouflage "vox" sound along with those lyrics I mentioned. Probably the best representation of the band.

THAT SMILING FACE is a very nice song that's laid back as well as dancey. This one was also considered a hit in Europe, but I don't recall ever hearing it broadcast in the states (much to my chagrin). The CD version is a little different from the cassette/vinyl version as they add some record static at the beginning along with a giggle from Marcus (apparently they enjoyed going to digital).

STRANGER THOUGHTS is a really good song too. The beat gets broken up and sparse during the verses but the way it all falls together in the choruses really give this song a lot of energy. I consider the chorus of this song the best in the album... something you'll either want to sing along with or just soak up.

WINNER TAKES NOTHING is a great song in a wierd way. It has a freaked out Eastern sound to it and the beat seems to go all over the place, but you can still dance to it. This song might not be for everybody due to it's... um... originality. But man. What a ride!

MUSIC FOR BALLERINAS and I ONCE HAD A DREAM are really nice, laid back songs. BALLERINAS is more uplifting and ambient. Something to watch a sunset by. DREAM is more like an industrial sad song done in an industrial waltz pattern. I know that sounds odd, but trust me. It works. Both are good songs.

POMPEJI is another bonus that was never on vinyl or cassette. It was actually a B-Side for The Great Commandment 12" remix album. It's moody like I ONCE HAD A DREAM, but much more brooding and dark. It's also the most ambient track on the CD. A definite treat in my book.

The songs I didn't mention range between "still pretty good" to "just okay" in my opinion. THEY CATCH SECRETS is probably the least of the songs. I think it was a B-side for That Smiling Face 12", but I can't be sure. Anyway if you liked The Great Commandment back in the 80's then you'll love this album. If you like that classic industrial/techno sound similar to Depeche Mode this is also a winner for you too.

4 out of 5 stars Signature Dark Synth Sound.......2004-03-28

You'll hear and read Camouflage referenced quite often. And for good reason too. While some will call Camo a DM ripoff this is not completely true. Sure there are obvious similarities but this album will make you realize that Camo probably got a little darker than DM usually liked to go up to that point in time (although that changed later on DM's masterful 'Black Celebration'). I also think that this German act had a sound that would dominate you more than Depeche or Erasure ever did. The monumental "The Great Commandment" just seems to take control of your body and force you to pump your feet. This actually was a harbinger of what would later become electro industrial which is where this song would likely be categorized if it were released today. TGC is obviously the main reason to own this album thouhg there are some other solid songs along with some weak ones.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best.......2007-03-17

And sadly, it's not well know. Talk about R&B, this LP/CD is pure 100% R&B.

3 out of 5 stars Only Essential For 'Chakaholics'!!.......2007-02-04

Well, Chaka was an established solo star at this point, and the only reason she returned to Rufus later in 1981 was to fulfill her contractual obligation with the group. Chaka went through the 'motions' and good material was recorded for this album. 'Better Together' & 'Losers In Love' are great Chaka songs, while a few of the other tracks aren't as impressive. This album is FINALLY available on CD as an expensive Japanese Import (with NO BONUS TRACKS), and that's a shame, but getting a CD-R copy isn't hard these days!! In addition to Chaka Khan, Angela Winbush provides great background vocals. My verdict - ESSENTIAL for Chakaholics!!!
Peace, SD

4 out of 5 stars Very good CD,not the best.......2004-12-14

If you are a fan you will pick this up, but to me it was not the groups best effort, but still a very good cd. The band was going through some issues, and they could not promote this album. It still has some good songs on it. I love the funky Jigsaw, and the slow cuts are great. Chaka still proves she can sing, but u could tell something is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Camouflage Stands Out !.......2004-06-05

Critics and reviewers who have given this obscure and once out of print Rufus & Chaka Khan title only 4 stars or less are correct about one thing; There were no major or memorable standout tracks from Camouflage. Even I did not know this '81 title existed until I came across it as a used record at a music store a couple of years ago. It occurred to me while listening to this newly remastered Japanese import cd the other night that the first three high energy R&B funk tracks almost play like a musical suite set on auto pilot(Better Together, Jigsaw, Secret Friend).By the fourth track Music Man (The D.J. Song)you would hope for something of a slower tempo to cool things down. This of course happens on the fifth track True Love as a slow dance ballad. As the mastering or recording engineer I would have swapped these last two tracks around mentioned to play out a much smoother sequence...Is this good or bad? I dunno cause the music, and the vocals contain that old skool infectious toe tappin' funk I miss from the late 70's and early 80's (before rap and hip hop would dominate the airwaves and music video channels) !

Infectious grooves, thumpin' bass, catchy melodic hooks and Khan's unique and soulful vocals are what saves this project from complete oblivion. The title Camouflage almost plays up to it's prophetic name for it truly was hidden due to lack of proper promotion, airplay and sales back in 1981. But listen carefully and Camouflage serves as a prelude to Rufus & Khan's double live album masterpiece Stompin' At The Savoy's single Ain't Nobody. It also serves as a precursor to Chaka's solo smash from 1984 I Feel For You album. Khan's vocals at times sound a bit polished or "studio" controlled on Camouflage but one can still feel the artistic vibe and energy.Ditto with the performance by Rufus !

This may be a biased 5 stars I am giving Camouflage, but it is because I am an old skool R&B/Funk fan and this is Rufus and Chaka's official last full length studio album collaboration together. It's almost historical...True, die hard fans of either Rufus & Chaka or old R&B/funk or both in general will treasure this. The new cd quality of this twenty-some year recording is phenomenal and still maintains that "warm" musical sound almost memorable of the vinyl version (minus the pops, ticks and clicks of the record). While the cd paper slip case cover and inside plastic cd protector and inner picture jacket of the band are excellent replicas of the original vinyl version, you will not want to just slip this between other plastic jeweled boxed cd's in your collection. You'll have a very tough time finding it. Some will not care too much for this cardboard approach to the cd's packaging;it only serves as a nostalgic feel...But the forgiveness or reward is found in the material or music !

3 out of 5 stars Uneven but Essential for the Diehard Fan.......2004-05-04

I purchased this album as soon as it came out back in '81 simply from being so ga ga over anything that had to do with Rufus & Chaka. In some ways it is fairly good, but I would certainly not rate it up there as one of my top favorites (Ask Rufus or Rufusized, among others). There is something vaguely uneven about the album as a whole, although there are some highlights, particularly with "Secret Friend" and "Music Man". Ultimately, the old energy that was so prevelent of this group in the past just didn't seem to be there for this last studio go round. I understand that Chaka recorded all the vocal tracks separately, and that this may have been realized more as a contract obligation that out of desire to put out a great album. I would recommend it only for the diehard Rufus & Chaka fan. By the way, someone reviewing this album here mentioned that it was produced by Quincy Jones, which I think is inaccurate. I must say that the energy seemed to have returned with "Live, Stompin' At The Savoy" (released in 1983)--a nice ending for a great group.

Album Description

De/Vision continues to polish and perfect their own sound, with emotional lyricism, top-notch electronic production, and memorable melodies. Though "6 Feet Underground" may not be the band's most club-friendly album (songs like "I'm Not Dreaming of You" or "Turn Me On" certainly have dance-floor potential) the album still stands out as one of the band's best, focusing on the emotional roller-coaster of love and relationships.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as great as I thought..........2006-09-22

I expected more from them this time around but it seemed that they mellowed a bit too much on this album. It's more on the slower/softer side of De/Vision.

The title track was boring as dripping molasses. The rest of the songs faired a bit better. Nothing grabs you from the onset. Get to listen to it a few more times to appreciate some of the tracks here.

Good De/Vision album overall though.

Definitely not for casual listeners.

5 out of 5 stars It sticks with you.......2006-02-21

I recently discovered De/Vision, and I am slowly buying all the old stuff. This one is by far the best, even better then the latest release.

5 out of 5 stars best album.......2005-11-23

i first heard devision a few months back, their devolution album. i wasn't really impressed. it sounded too much like club mix music lacking in creative lyrics. the only exception for me was the song "drifting sideways" which,to me, was excellent. it combined the electronic sound with real lyrics, and a solidified composition.

i have to compare it with trent reznor in that you really need to pair interesting background with an equally interesting lyrics/singing to make a *whole* song, which he does. (though his style is more industrial).

6 feet underground
i LOVE this album. they took the strengths that were developing in songs like "drifting sideways" and made an entire album with that quality. music you'd actually want to listen to, even outside of the club, where you can actually really *hear* it.

for me, this is definately their strongest album. after listening to it excessively, i went back to devolution, and some of it was able to grow on me then.

6 ft is also a somewhat darker album than the others. more emotional/ more somber/ introspective. but not lacking in good beats.

3 out of 5 stars 6 Feet Underground.......2005-11-10

Not their finest work to date, De/Vision's "6 Feet Underground" is still a very worthy effort and a good CD for the seasoned fan. Overall, the album has several solid tracks, but very little in the way of a sure-fire, over-the-top hit.

The two singles on the album, 'I'm Not Dreaming of You' and 'Turn Me On' are excellent tunes, and are certainly worthy of being released as singles, but they are relatively slow and not even the best tracks on the album. If you're looking for the more 'danceable' side of the band, then 6FU may ultimately disappoint you.

However, released on both singles discs are several incredible, club-worthy remixes, that I feel are actually better than the original tunes.

My personal favorites on 6FU are the opening track, 'I'm Not Enough' which is in a similar vein to the two previously mentioned tracks, but a little livelier, and 'Take Me Over', which begins with a nice little melody, then kicks you in the head with a hard-driving, Ministry/Industrial-style rift. Sublime.

'Take Me to Heaven', the disc's closing track is a haunting, Depeche Mode, a la "Songs of Faith and Devotion"- type song, which lead-singer Steffen pulls off extremely well. The song's sultry lyrics blend nicely with the dark, desolate composition. Picture a cross between DM's 'Clean' and 'I Feel You.' However, the references to DM and the aforementioned Ministry, are just that, references for the uninitiated. De/Vision very much stand on their own merit.

'Beside You' and 'Right On Time', contrary to most of the rest of 6FU, make you want to move. The former is pretty catchy, while the latter is mostly instrumental, and falls just short of being a club hit.

'Unputdownable' reminds me of early Camouflage, but with much better English, and 'Aimee' is a nice little tune as well. Both songs have been released as b-sides and really aren't any better than that.

The title track is very dark and waaaay too long. I truly enjoy its brooding sensitivities, but it simply seems like they couldn't figure out how to end it. Too bad, because its not a bad song.

'Beside You' is OK, but it is yet another slow-ish track. In general, 6FU has a fistful of very good tunes, but ultimately fails to deliver as a whole. Perhaps if all the slow-ish songs were divided up and put onto several different discs, they would sound even better. But a lack of variation on the CD is really the only thing that prevents this from being one of the band's best.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like depeche.......2005-10-21

I love de/vision their music is incredible. If you like depeche mode than you'll love these guys. This album is not their best but it is a 10 for me. I cant wait for the next from them.

5 out of 5 stars Rod Rocks.......2007-08-07

Certainly not his best album, but even more so, far from the worst. Rod has some great tracks on this disc. "Infatuation" is a great, upbeat rocker, his version of "All Right Now" is faster than the original and in my opinion far better, "Some Guys Have All The Luck" is a chart topper, "Can We Still Be Friends" has great vocals and a more electronic feel, "Bad For You" is a good driving song if nothing else, "Heart Is On The Line" is a lot like "Some Guys Have All The Luck" so its good, "Camouflage" is probably the worst song on the disc and you'll definately skip it as soon as you hear them start spelling (C-A-M-O...), and finally "Trouble" is a calming song to close out the album with good vocals by Rod. Seem a little critical? Well maybe so, but every Rod fan should have a copy of this one because if nothing else it's fun to listen to and takes everyone back to the days of Rockin' Rod.

1 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end.......2007-02-08

Apart from the single "Infatuation", this album was a big step down for Rod Stewart. I guess he had to try something different or be accused of being stuck in a rut (and start writing silly movie soundtracks). But the music is as horridly 80s cheesy as you can get. This album was the end of respectability for such a great singer. (Following it up with "Forever Young" pretty much cemented his fall) "Some Guys Have All The Luck" what the heck is that? What a long way to come from 'Every Picture', 'Night On The Town' or 'Gasoline Alley'.

5 out of 5 stars Lost and Found.......2007-01-17

I must comment that when this was first ordered, we had it delivered to a P O Box, but to no avail. Apparently someone there either stole it, or delivered it to the wrong P O Box, but Amazon was quite nice to us, and sent aonther copy free of charge to our residence.

4 out of 5 stars 'Been looking for this one for two decades.......2004-10-22

For some odd reason, I missed purchasing this album upon its initial release in '84. I am more of an occasional Stewart fan and when one of his songs grabs my attention, it really grabs my attention.

Such was the case with "Infatuation." Yes, it was overproduced and Stewart's voice was drowned out in segments by some of the instrumentation. But, man, it makes me get up and move!!! The same thing happens when I hear "Some Guys Have All the Luck," "Bad for You," and the title cut. The rest of the disc is pure 80's and that, for me, is worth the purchase.

While Rod is garnering commercial success with his trio of standards (of which I have the first one), I still think Stewart the Rocker is, by far, his best incarnation.

And "Camouflage" satisfies my musical appetite most grandly.

2 out of 5 stars Two Moments Surrounded By Mediocrity.......2004-07-25

Camouflage is not one of Rod Stewart's better recordings. He strays far away from his rock n roll roots and mines the disco beats and synthesizers to the hill. The result is an annoying recording with much more bad than good.

However, there are two strong singles on this CD. Some Guys Have All The Luck has some catchy hooks as well as some interesting lyrics and synthesizer/saxaphone touches. It is easily the highlight of this recording. The lead off track Infatuation, is pretty charming as well. I like the way the guitars fit in with the rest of the song.

However, the remaining six songs just do not do anything special for me. Allright Now is too laden with synthesizers and tricky beats. Rod should have done this as a straight out rocker. As a matter of fact the problem with this recording is Rod got too complex with the tricky synthesized beats. Nearly every tune relies on too much special effects. In other words, too much cheesey style and not enough substance. Trouble is a decent ballad but it maybe wins the award as best tune of the remaining six tracks.

Truthfully Amazon readers you are best served going with a more rock n roll best Rod Stewart recording than Camouflogue.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very good synth pop album, but I wouldn't call it "classic" - genre fans will still like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-13

Camouflage's "Sensor" is a very good synth pop album, but it falls short of earning "5" stars. There are a couple reasons for this: the singers, though decent, aren't good enough to "wow" or interest me, and the album just lacks songs that are good enough to, again, "wow" me. If you've listened to this album and have heard many Pet Shop Boys albums, then you would know what I mean. Every song here is good, but it just lacks a great one. Also, like I said before, the singers are good, but they aren't "great" either - they at least fit the music somewhat (they become a little cheesy in spots, too). The lyrics tend to be pretty easy to hear, though they aren't "that" interesting anyway. Musically the album is essentially a throwback to the sound of 80's synth pop, and considering Camouflage WAS an 80's synth pop group then this makes sense. If you liked their older albums or 80's synth pop in general, then you're in business. Overall, I think that Camouflage and synth pop fans will like this CD a lot, but, at the end of the day, I would argue that it isn't great enough to be hailed as a "classic". Still, this is highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

This is a great cd it is worth the import price.

Been listening to them since Voices And Images and I felt they had some less than good material since then..but this is the best ever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-22

I hardly ever write reviews. But this one was such a positive surprise! I bought it on the strengths of the reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. Overall the album is somewhat mellow, but that's a good thing. Camouflage's sounds matured - the production is top notch and the compositions are excellent. A very solid album.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2005-04-17

What a surprise! I had listened to an old Camouflage release, and took a chance on Sensor. I would say it sounds like a great combo of 25% Gary Neuman, 25% Depeche Mode, 50% Cause and Effect. I enjoyed every track, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a 21st century refresh of our most revered 80's alternative sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-07-30

A wonderful compilation of this group's work. Listening to this CD is a lot like listening to a greatest hits package by Depeche Mode. Any fan of Depeche Mode can obviously hear the same style of music in Camouflage. All of the band's greatest songs are here though it is not the same as listening to the original albums in which are far better. Discard the track Jealousy in which Camouflage sems to have made the same mistake as Depeche Mode in Songs of Faith and Devotion by utilizing guitars. It didn't work for Depeche Mode, it's not going to work for Camouflage. The other track to stay away from is Waiting. That track is a big [loss] and does not belong on this compilation of best work by Camouflage. Other than that, this CD is pleasing to the ear.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the originals!.......2002-04-14

Camouflage are too good a group to buy a Greatest Hits album from.

Most of the tracks are strong: stylistically, Camouflage are similar to Depeche Mode. All the more reason to buy the original albums and appreciate the holistic context in which they were first written. Why have one's listening spoiled by a record company's decisions?

5 out of 5 stars GR8 ALBUM.......2001-10-10

This is one of the best band of the 80's. I really like their works such as The Great Commandment, Love is a Shield, Neighbours, Strangers Thoughts among others. I used to mix their songs with Red Flags' Russian Radio & If I Ever coz they have the same beat. I've been looking for this band for so long & thank God Amazon.com has it. This album is going in to my collection.

I love camouflage, for the last 10 years, they been one of the best synth-pop creators every album they put out is a different
,sometimes rough(meanwhile),and sometimes sub-real(voices & images)but there always full of stories & fantasy,i dont't have
a favorite album, i love everyone of them in different ways, but
i do agree with kevhamilton this album needs"this smiling face"
(the single version only available in the 12'inch vinyl),and also
more!more!..remixes,....william orbit's mix is deliciously,huntingly a masterpiece,..i gess we will "waiting,waiting,waiting,waiting"...for the remix album ....
love you guys...........

5 out of 5 stars my chime in.......2000-03-05

I just wanted to add, that, even with being a Camouflage completist, this compilation is useful to the average fan, in that, it contains many SINGLE mixes of the songs, different to the album versions. And the packaging and artwork is quite nice too. Woulda been nice to have a new track featured on here, but, all the important songs are here. I think every Camouflage fan has their favorites though, so if your fave is missing, dont feel alone.

Album Description

2006 album from this German synth band, their seventh full length album in their 20 year career. The album mixes a positive attitude with the melancholia that is so typical of this band. The inspiration for titles such as 'Dreaming' and 'Motif Sky' stem from the early '90s, then underwent a complete overhaul and feature whole new instrumentation. An optimistic love song such as 'The Pleasure Remains' sits comfortably next to the stirring 'Passing By,' which Marcus refers to as a "space drama with a happy end." All in all, despite its diversity, Relocated has the trademarks of a typical Camouflage album which the fans will enjoy. Inside Out.

4 out of 5 stars Synthpop lives! (If you can find it!).......2007-03-28

Ahhh, I long for the days when the "hits" on the radio were by bands like Depeche, Tears for Fears, Talk Talk and Thompson Twins. The days of, for lack of a better term, "synth-pop". Now, radio and MTV is full of nothing but talentless, one-note "pop-punk", that even the kids who listen to it now will be sick of by this time next year. Sorry - I'm digressing! If you look hard enough, you can find bands who still extoll the virtues of songwriting, melody, atmosphere, and (gasp!) keyboards. They just happen to exist outside of the realm of American record companies, but they are out there. Perfect example, Germany's Camouflage. Sure, they are basically a Depeche clone (their last album "Sensor" was pretty much a recreation of DM's "Ultra") but that doesn't mean they aren't putting out excellent albums. This new one is a little less influenced by the Mode, but if strong hooks, synths, Gahan-like vocals and great songs is what you are after, these guys are at the top of the pile. Other excellent discoveries lately (for me, anyways): Iris, De/Vision, and in particular, what might be my favorite (and hardest to find, but you will if you look) "Ultimate Sky" by Michigan.

4 out of 5 stars Another solid release.......2007-03-26

Ah, Camouflage. Still the best option for that guilty little part of you that wishes Depeche Mode could have just kept making "Violator" over and over and over again. Their UK friends Mesh do a better job of taking the basic dark-synthpop formula to new heights, but sometimes you just want to bask in the retro glow, and "Relocated" delivers in spades. The vocals in particular are superb, as is the production.

If I were to pick one criticism, it's that the singles here are almost too "singly." For instance, "The Pleasure Remains" really, really wants to be "Enjoy the Silence 2," but it doesn't quite have the chops.

Fortunately, the album tracks are there to pick up the slack. "The Perfect Key" is a nearly perfect ballad that shows off singer Marcus Meyn's low range to great effect. If I were female or gay, I'd be weak in the knees. (Might I suggest a dance remix, guys?) Meanwhile, "Dreaming" is a lot of fun, as is "Confusion," a swing-time number that stacks up well against Alphaville's goofier moments.

4 out of 5 stars music lover.......2006-12-07

I love this album so glad some of my favorite groups are still making music and doing it well.Like Depeche mode Erasure new order and these guys. This as good as sensor to me there last album.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Ever!!!!.......2006-10-20

Honestly, Camouflage is the best band out there in the "synth rock" genre. Forget Depeche Mode. For years Camouflage have been one of my favorite bands. And with each album, they show me why. In their 20 year career, this is their 7th album. And one of their best. It borrows heavily from their early 90's work. I thought their last album, "Sensor" was brilliant. This album is just as great and contains more uptempo songs. Although, I do like the first single off this album,"motif sky", I wasn't blown away by it. As a matter of fact, i fell in love with this album after the second listen. The songs on Relocated are full of layers that you have to listen to over and over to hear. As always Marcus' voice is sexy and passionate, which is one of this band's appealling qualities. This time around their are more fast paced songs like, "motif Sky", " we are lovers", and my two favorites, "dreaming" and "the pleasure remaains". But as with every Camouflage album there are the gorgeous slow tempo/ballads like "the perfect key" and "something wrong". Some of the lead vocals are shared by Oliver, who hasn"t sung this much in years.

there's a couple songs that i'm having a harder time getting into, but all in all, this album is a great collection of songs. I would love to see them have success in America again. and i would love to see them live.

5 out of 5 stars new wave man.......2005-10-22

My favorite camouflage album. I love this one. Lots of good songs. This album is an underated electro pop gem.

4 out of 5 stars good follow up to "Voices and Images".......2001-10-18

I really like this album. Camouflage has done it again. It is the album after "Voices And Images" that happens to be one of my favorate albums. "Methods of Silence" has the dark synth sounds that we expect from a German synth-band. The album is a little darker and some people say more mature than "Voices and Images". I personaly enjoy them both very much and feel that they both offer the similar type of satisfaction. Songs like "Love Is A Shield", "Anyone", "Feeling Down", "Your Skinhead Is the Dream", and "Picture of Life" are closer to the album "Voices and Images" and are just fantastic and upbeat. There are more great songs like "One Fine Day", "On Island" and "Sooner Than We Think" that a bid slower and on the mild side.

5 out of 5 stars Like a breath of fresh air.......2001-07-14

This CD contains some real original songs, all of which are very good. I bought this album a long time ago, and I still listen to it today.

4 out of 5 stars We all live in a giant train station.......2001-07-13

Great stuff. More polished than their previous work (which altho not bad, suffered alot from the group's poor English translations) ... "Love Is a Shield" is an obvious club dance number, but the lyrics and textures of this one make it special ... ok, it's a love song, but I happen to like em, ok? :-) ... The oddly named "Your Skinhead is the Dream" is a very dreamy synthy ballad with spoken words, and is simply relaxing.

But do you want to know the most poignant and interesting lyrics on this album? If so, bust out your French-English dictionary, and go to the track entitled "Les Rues" (The Streets) ... it's got odd musical textures, but the spoken lyrics in French are VERY alliterative, and (when translated) speak of our lives in the everyday world being analogous to a busy train station in the street, bustling with people. Of course, you'd have to speak fluent French to understand it but, having had someone translate it for me, it is all the more evocative.

Anyway ... this is quality material. If you collect darkwave or synthpop, this one is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty found.......2001-01-02

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Comparison to Depeche Mode is unavoidable, but I feel Camouflage has outgrown that influence and came into their own with this album. The infusion of ethnic mood/melodies, classical influences, and dark poetry is what makes this album a true beauty. I have been listening to it since its release, and I have not gotten tired of it one bit. In fact, everytime I listen to it, my love for this album is renewed. That's 12 years, my friends. TWELVE years.

Any fans of Camouflage,Depeche Mode,or PBS Get this synth classic NOW!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars not worth any amount of $$$.......2006-02-04

I own the first three albums camouflage put out. After listening to this cd I stopped following the band. With this album they've abandoned every aspect of why I liked them in the first place. When the they first appeared on the scene they were doing "depeche mode" better than the band itself. This cd is garbage and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone no matter what kind of musical taste you have. Stick with "voices & images" or
"methods of silence" and pass this one by!

5 out of 5 stars New and Different.......2004-10-26

There is something interesting about this band when you listen to their first three albums. You will notice they evolve musically. Voices and Images was all club techno. Methods of Silence was a mix of that signature sounds and some more artistic influences. This album is essentially the natural progression forward.

Almost gone are the original sounds and tones the band was known for. When I first heard this album I really missed that and wondered what the heck I was listening to. Then after hearing the album a few more times I started to realize exactly what I had here. It was raw and yet polished and tight at the same time. The music is more minimalist with less noise filling up the background. Marcus seemed more reflective in his singing as well as the vocals being a lot more cleaned up this time.

Songs like Bitter Sweet still have a LOT of that classic Camouflage sound in it, while songs like Seize Your Day, Heaven, and This Day have a fresh and almost inspiring feel. Then you have some wild experimental stuff like Mellotron and What For.

This album is for the truly die-hard fan of Camouflage because casual fans might only like the Depeche Mode sounding stuff and not be able to get into this new area. It's not a club album. It's more in between alternative and slightly avantgarde. If you just like good music that's progressive and artistic then you can't go wrong with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Utter junk.......2004-03-31

These other reviews must have been written by members of the band. This is truly awful music, 3rd rate pop from the early 90's. Totally forgettable tunes and lyrics, I played it once and tossed it in the bin. Save yourself a few bucks, there's a reason why these guys never had a hit.....

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre............2003-12-14

I have never quite figured out what Camouflage was trying to do with this album. It is really nothing like its predecessors "Voice & Images" and "Methods Of Silence" They all but abandoned the Depeche Mode-like synth pop in favor of a more acoustic, more experimental sound. Vocalist Marcus Meyn changes his singing style as well, with a more aggressive, rawer tone. All in all, though, it is a very rich and satisfyingly unique album. Only a few of the songs fall short, sometimes sounding a bit "quirky" at times, which is my only minor criticism of this album.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.
