Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!
Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21
This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!
JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08
I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.
Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29
Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show
Not good at all.......2007-01-09
This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigal

Great Music.......2007-06-27
I love this CD. The music is not too heavy or too bubblegumish, it's just plain rock music. A great buy.
Insane that "Sometimes Salvation" isn't on here. .......2007-06-23
That's easily one of their best songs (from their best album "Southern Harmony and Musical Companion"). Wasn't that a single? even if it wasn't, it's a perennial favorite among fans.
Great CD.......2007-05-16
I love this album...its an excellent addition to your collection. Its got the soul of souther rock with an edge.
top notch.......2007-03-18
I am a huge black crowes fan....and this is the definitive collection for black crowes junkies AND newbies...you won't regret picking this one up...just stay away from their live albums
Love the Black Crows.......2007-03-08
I purchased this CD on Feb 5, was supposed to receive by Feb 8. Unfortunately, the delivery system is definitly not as good as the cd. I finally received it March 1st. It was well worth the wait and aggravation of calling a few times to find out where it was. I can say I like every single song on the cd. Usually, I skip ahead to this song or that one. No need to here. Great songs, great cd....have to admit great price, just really lousy shipping. Better luck with that part next time.

Amazon.com essential recording
Prince's fifth album came right before the lascivious multi-instrumentalist became a huge star with his 1984 film and soundtrack, Purple Rain. But Prince had already proved himself to be the most audacious talent to emerge in the 1980s, and 1999, the bulk of which features Prince on all the instruments, reflects the dance-rock styles that he also brought to the acts he produced, particularly the Time. Prince knows how to run a one-man-band individual instruments don't blend together as much as they compete in a funky showdown which allows tracks like "Automatic," "D.M.S.R.," and "Delirious" to sustain their long playing times. But the album's two enduring hits, "1999" and "Little Red Corvette," outshine the rest, and define the essential roles that rock and funk play in Prince's music. "Little Red Corvette" is a sexy song about a car, which would have been enough to make it a terrific rock song even if it didn't also boast an infectious chorus and a great guitar part. As for "1999," count on it being the dance song of the millennial year. --John Milward

1999... Legacy cemented.......2007-07-13
1999 is an album for the ages. Bumping funk and creative and fun tracks like 1999, Little Red Corvette, and my personal favorite D.M.S.R. make this album probably one of the 80's top 5 albums and one of musics top 40 albums of all time.
Prince unlike Michael Jackson has not struggled to reinvent himself, because Prince has been constantly experimenting with new sounds and new ways to create his masterpieces.
It is hard to believe that 1999 preceded Purple Rain, but did an incredible job teasing the world's appetite for more of the "Purple One"
This is a must have for any R&B collection and any run of the mill Prince fan!
Great Album, that should live in the history books of music for decades to come!
Pure Genius!.......2007-05-13
This is one of my all time favorite albums/CDs EVER! It was so far ahead of its time, as is usually the case with Prince's music. I listen to this every day while driving in to work, sometimes while doing homework, or cleaning house. Regardless of what I am doing, as soon as "1999" starts I am ready to take on anything.
I adore Prince and admire him for his God-given musical talent and his self-confidence. There is something to be said for a person who can write a number one hit overnight AND play all of the instruments on that number one hit (When Doves Cry from the Purple Rain CD). Not only is he one of the most forward-thinking musicians of all time, he is, without question, THE most talented musician in pop history. He is also the sexiest musician I have ever seen. I thought that when I saw him in concert in 1986 in England, in the movies Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon and still think it today, over 20 years later, when he performed the half-time show for Superbowl XLI. Even now, in my 40s, when I watch his movies I get chills just listening to him sing and scream. To meet him would be a 20+ year dream come true for me.
Dance, Music, Sex, Romance.......2007-01-28
As I slowly put the cold cd into the overly large boombox that occupys a large portion of my room, my disco ball slowly turns overhead. I must admit that the mood was perfect when it all started. 1999 came and went along with the whole album. The disco ball reflected smooth colored lights that resembeled what Prince's stuido might have looked like. My ears hadn't really heard such a straightforward album putting out sounds of rock, pop and of course funk. New favorites were positioned in my brain, the gargantuan size of Prince's catalogue really makes your mind implode trying to get every song, but there is something so pure and raw about this album that makes you listen to it over and over. By the time the album ended, my eyes were wide with excitement, not because it was now one of my all time favorite albums, but because I had found one of my new favorite artists.
1999: With out question or comment...10/10
Little Red Corvette: There should be no skipping. This is a jam, and everyone should appreciate how significant this is...10/10
Delirious: Cheesy keyboard, sexual lyrics, and amazing delivery..10/10
Let's Pretend We're Married: Well it runs about 7:50, but it has an irresistable groove that gives this one the title of one the best ignored singles that prince released...10/10
D.M.S.R: Party...9/10
Automatic: A-U-T-O-matic, not hardley it runs for about 9:00, it is still very good...9/10
Something in the Water: Weird song that would, I guess, inspire what would become Computer Blue. This one is like many of Prince's songs, why you done me wrong? and he doesn't understand...10/10
Free: Cheesiest song of all time! 80's vintage sounding song about the world...10/10
Lady Cab Driver: This one has so many hooks that you can't get your head around it....10/10
All the Critics Love U in New York: No Comment
International Lover: Very appropriate ending to this album...10/10
Prince is just amazing!.......2007-01-11
Prince is a very talented musician and as a fellow musician I see his music as very eclectic and very daring. The album starts off with the smash "1999" and it is the long version not the radio edit that people are used to. Absolutely one of my favorites and the reason I got into Prince "Little Red Corvette" is a spectacular rock song that was way ahead of its time. Another one of my favorites is "Something In The Water Does Not Compute" I just love the sound of the synth in the background. First time I heard "Lady Cab Driver" I was suprised but, once you get into Prince you realize that's who he is and what he really likes to talk about. Prince's music is known to be controversial to some but to the rest of us he is an amazing all in one icon who wraps up everything plain and simple into a nice piece of vinyl that we immensely enjoy.
The album is purely 80s era and during this period The Purple One heavily wrote dance and party numbers that have kept fans like me begging for more. Dance, Music, Sex, Romance aisdes from the longevity of the track and the thumping bass line it is a hell of a track to jam to. If you purchase this album, you won't regret it. This is a classic for those who like to party and dance. I believe that this album is worth every cent while, also making you come back for more from The Purple One.
This is one of the worst of the 80's.......2006-10-29
I knew after 1983 things would never be the same with Rock and Roll ever again. The music was becoming more clean sounding with technology more or less replacing the majority of musicians. This would be one of the first ones. I remember hearing the first single from this which was "Little Red Corvette" I still say probably one of Prince's best songs, and the only other tune that's passible is "Let's Pretend We're Married". Everything else is horrible. The title track to me is a mindless, brainless dance tune, and I feel has no inadmissable value to life. Unfortunately, I guess the only way to get girls is to like this song. I also didn't take too much fancy to the other hit which was "Delirious". I am somewhat disappointed with this as to me Prince is a gifted performer, and plays a decent guitar, so why go technical? I just am appalled at the way music wound up, and it all started here.

Sarah Michelle Gellar may be saving the world from vampires but her TV show is also helping a few worthy bands get some much needed exposure. Dayton, Ohio's ridiculously prolific Guided by Voices lead things off with the playful "Teenage FBI," a strong distillation of the band's knack for the irrepressible hook. The all-femme Hepburn protest in true "Maggie's Farm" fashion (as in "I ain't gonna work on...") for the quickstepping, bubble-gum punk-pop of "I Quit." Bif Naked's arena anthem "Lucky" is perfect for staring at candles. Garbage are in suitably psychedelic glam shades for "Temptation Waits." Rasputina, the gothic cello ensemble, include the appropriate "Transylvania Concubine." The only misstep is from virtual old-timers the Sundays, who deliver a lazy-day version of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." But this is made up for with the inclusion of Nerf Herder's "Buffy" theme song and Christophe Beck's instrumental theme music, which round out this all-inclusive collection. --Rob O'Connor

listen and relive your favorite buffy moments with a wide variety of songs from the show, from the upbeat theme song to the slow romantic" Wild horses" played during buffy and angels prom dance-would definatley recommend!
Compendium of music from Buffy and some of the best music of the 90's.......2006-02-05
This CD was released around the midpoint of the run of the series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so it primarily is from the high-school years of the show. It is not just a soundtrack of the music from Buffy, it is a very good mix of music from the last half of the 1990's. Although I consider myself a die-hard fan to the point that I can pretty much rattle off the names of the episodes in order and tell you what each was about, I did not recognize many of the songs on this CD as far as being able to link a particular scene or episode with a song.
There are, of course, a few exceptions, the most obvious being the show's theme by Nerfherder and "Close Your Eyes", which is the Buffy/Angel love theme. The latter has always been one of my favorites, as I can almost feel what Buffy is going through when she realizes she must kill her dearest love in order to save the world at the conclusion of "Becoming Part 2". Another song that brings back memories of Buffy and Angel's tortured romance is "Wild Horses", which is playing as the two dance together at the prom, both knowing that Angel is leaving town soon and this is their last chance to have any kind of normal moment together. "Lucky" recalls the episode "The Harsh Light of Day" when Buffy allows herself to be seduced by aspiring Lothario and fellow college student Parker Abrams. I've always been intrigued by "Transylvania Concubine", which is the quirky and memorable tune playing during Drusilla's "coming out" party in the episode "Surprise".
The remainder of the songs did not really provide any emotional cues for me as did these five that I have mentioned, but they are still a good collection of lively music from the 90's that I consider to be a worthy purchase.
Must Have for REAL Buffy Fans.......2006-01-29
If you loved the show, be sure to get this CD.
Delightfull Compilation Featuring "The Theme" .......2006-01-25
90s were amazing, when i went to University, alternative rock ruled, Buffy were the favorite sitcom at WBs nigths along with Dawsons Creek , teenager movies were at the top of the box office, Sniff! i miss the 90s, the collection of songs here gathered are the best of the best of that age.

It's easy to see why You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is so popular. With its simple set and small cast, it has become a staple of high-school drama and small-scale productions all over America. Of course, this doesn't necessarily translate into a grandiose Broadway show, but this Michael Mayer-directed production is enjoyable. Anthony Rapp (Rent) plays an effective Charlie and Ilana Levine's Lucy is fun. The lively "Snoopy" number (Roger Bart plays the canine's role) is the musical's highlight, but such tunes as "Beethoven Day" really date the musical. Some may find it simplistic; others will love it. Which probably makes it a lot like the "Peanuts" comic strip itself. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Fun for the family!.......2007-08-07
I first bought this CD when I saw the performance by Kristin Chenoweth and Stanley Wayne Mathis at the Tony Awards. This is a great quality recording, and the songs are kid friendly- which is becoming increasingly difficult to find on Broadway- but adults can appreciate them too! I am neither kid, nor adult (rather, 16 next Saturday...) but enjoy this CD more than my 12 year old brother, who is starting to appreciate a good musical when he sees one. (He is quite the Altar Boyz fan).
While I do agree with another reviewer that Lucy is rather screechey, it is the voice always imagined when reading the comic strips.
I strongly reccomend this CD to those who are fans of the cast, each of whom are truly exceptional, Charlie Brown, or people with young children. Music is great for kids, and of course, this has a great message!
Enjoy!
Laugh-out-loud.......2007-04-03
Charles Schultz' beloved comic-strip characters come to life in this award-winning audience favorite. The revival is so delightful. The musical score is delightful. And the songs will definitely bring you lots of laughter. Kristin Chenoweth's character Sally Brown is most definitely the one to watch for. With her rendition of My New Philosophy alone, it's hardly surprising why she won the Tony for this role. Also loved the song Little Known Facts, I can't stop laughing when I first heard it. I admit I kinda winced the first time I heard Ilana Levine's voice. But it sorta grew on me I guess. And anyway, the more I think about it, her voice is appropriate for Lucy. Another favorite is Glee Club Rehearsal, the way they keep fighting over that pencil. And "What's an enigma?" Hahaha. Anthony Rapp and BD Wong also has funny moments. I especially like Charlie (Anthony Rapp) when he was singing The Doctor Is In. "Wait a minute, Snoopy likes me!" Lucy:"He only pretends to like you because you feed him." Poor Charlie! And Lucy's quite mean to Charlie. I also laughed at BD Wong because I'm used to seeing him in Law&Order:SVU.
Get a copy of this revival cast recording. It's really worth it. For your whole family. Hilarious and great musical score. One of the best family musicals.
What's the difference between the 1967 Original Broadway production of YAGMCB and the 1999 Revival?
The characters that is presented in the original stage production has been maintained, but a new perspective has been added. The new cast of six characters includes Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Snoopy and Sally Brown (she replaces Patty.) The original twelve songs all remain in this version, and two new songs: Beethoven Day (Schroeder & Company) and My New Philosophy (Sally with Schroeder) have been added. Some of the underscoring music was also replaced (Lucy's Queen Lucy and Snoopy's Red Baron). The music and the dialogue has also been reworked.
A Family Favorite.......2007-01-16
It's good music to listen to in the car. It's appropiate for everyone of every age. It also teaches children how to appreciate the arts, since it's based on a children's program that everyone knows and loves.
Nostaglic .......2007-01-11
I saw a production of this great play in northern New Jersey last year and was struck by the introduction in the program that the story of "Peanuts" was written by an American WWII veteran who endured the tough winter of 19944-45 in Europe just as my Dad and a number of uncles did. Perhaps another perspective on these timeless stories of growing up and learning to be happy.
A really cute show.......2006-08-05
This is a fantastic score, and though the original cast recording may be more authentic/true to the Peanuts cartoon, a clearer sound and a bigger orchestra does nothing but good for this CD. Anthony Rapp is a fantastic charlie brown and shows his distress perfectly. the song that was written for kristin chenoweth is laugh-out-loud funny and a great addition.
ilana lavine's voice is, i admit, little short of a screech, but it's only annoying because in the songs with the whole cast, you can tell she has a beautiful voice normally. for those who were complaining that her songs are unlistenable, it isn't that bad and it's part of lucy's character.
my favourite songs are 'you're a good man, charlie brown' and 'happiness'. they both have an underlying message that makes the CD worth listening to for adults as well as children. 'for happiness is anyone and anything at all that's loved by you...' how true is that? definitely buy either this or the off-broadway cast recording, but this CD has a more definite beat and rhythm and is wonderful to listen to.

For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
A Great Compilation of Williams' Best Scores.......2007-07-26
This two disc CD does an excellent job of covering thirty years of Academy Award winner John Williams' greatest hits. It contains main title themes from films such as Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, and of course the best theme of them all (in my opinion), Superman. It also contains two principal themes from the summer Olympics that NBC has used in its broadcasts since 1996 when John Williams composed the album "Summon the Heroes."
The sound quality is excellent and I've been extremely pleased with the product.
Bottom Line: Great CD with unforgettable hits. Buy it today if you're interested in it.
Beethoven is an insect compaired to this titian of composition........2007-07-18
In the past when I went to movies, I rarely thought about the music unless it was a popular song that was being played. I never realized how much the score had to do with the overall effect I felt while watching the show.
Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.
This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.
I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.
While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.
Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."
An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15
John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.
Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".
Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".
The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.
It's my second copy!.......2007-03-09

A Straight Thuggin' CD...............2007-07-16
Bone Thugs is mad talented, this disc starts with "The Introduction" Mad creepy! It's is all about the hustle, and hangin' on the side, I can relate! "East 1999" had them reminiscing about being in the game, slanging and running from the crazy thugs in the streets, but, as long as you're cool, it's all good with Cleveland mad gangsta flava. "Eternal" has a sweet old school beat, all about getting that skrilla! Ducking and pumpin' shots, it's time to get paid! "Crept And We Came" has them in stealth mode, hurry in and get the job done, whether they have to bust a cap, collect ends or settle a debt.
"Down 71" starts with Bizzy Bone at trial. He is reflecting on how he got there and this track is full of action & violence, ghetto style! "The Bill Collector" can be said to get what is owed, on the real tip! Don't test BT&H or there will definitely be consequences. I love the homage to the underground on this! "Budsmokers Only" is a tokin' tune with the homies, it's all about smoking, the taste, the feeling, everything! (Check out any Kottonmouth Kings) "Crossroads" is the signature song here, how fitting it's at the middle of the CD. I guess this is all about finding yourself through reflections of your actions, whether good or bad. Keep prayin' brothers! "Me Killa" is poetic in verse, short, but to the point of being a straight, ruthless dealer!
"Land Of Tha Heartless" is about survival in Cleveland! Watch your back, is the clear message here, there's no place to run! "No Shorts, No Losses" can be said to let people know that these cats never want to get cheated or else! Whether it be drugs, or favors, if a double cross happens, it's time for someone to pay! "1st Of The Month" is a smooth party groove, Everyone's paid and it's time to get that party on. Grillin', Chillin, Stylin', and Profilin' it's that time to relax, hang, and smoke with the homies! "Buddah Lovaz" is silky smooth jam, only for the smokers, but the way they sang it, it makes me want to get laid for real! LOL! I guess you would call this a love song!
"Die Die Die" is a song I cant comprehend too much, accept for the fact that in the send they get got my the cops! "Mr. Ouija 2" is an obvious continuation of Ouija off the Creepin' Ah Come Up EP, Just trying to get insight on a murder about to happen. "Mo Murda" is segued from Ouija 2, but the actual act, based on what was told by the ouija! It's painted picture of how the ghetto is, when the game is involved. "Shotz To Tha Double Glock" rounds out this tale about taking care of business, protecting your hood and your homies is what it's about! Sort of a "Thuggalo" family (LOL! I use that reference because I am a die hard juggalo and I know ICP and Bone Thugs are tight!)
This Cd is straight gangsta for real. I mean it's subtle and to the point, honest, and real! If you ask me this is more prolific than Tupac, and very raw!! An excellent CD by Bone Thugs & Harmony!!!!
Best Album Ever.......2007-07-10
This is BY FAR one of the best selling Hip-Hop Records of all time. It beat Elvis' record!!!
Best of the Best!!.......2007-05-16
This is without a doubt Bone's best album ever! Even though they are still awesome today, they (nor anyone else) will ever be able to top this album. It's just great from beginning to end...even the interludes, which are really just them singing and aint nothin' wrong with that. You can't call yourself a true Bone fan if you don't own this album. If you dont, then go get it now cuz you're missing out!
BONE THUGS 4-EVER!!!
every song is a must listen!.......2007-03-19
this is in my opinion, the best rap group album ever. no other rap group these days have the fire, passion and talents like BONE. i know there's talk about the group getting back together next year, and i really hope so. they're not forgotten and they're gonna be bigger than ever. to the new BONE fans, this is the album that cemented them in hip hop, their videos were on mtv all the time and they were winning all kinds of awards...you won't be disappointed!
Best Rap Album of all Time.......2007-03-08
I've been listening to rap for well over a decade now and the best album of all time is this one. Nothing even compares. This album captures the essence of the city streets through sound and words. The beats are beautifully dark and evil. When I listen to this cd, I feel like I am in a wasteland in hell. The genius of these four artists to capture such emotion in a cd at the ages of 17-20 is unbelievable.

This 1999 revival of Irving Berlin's timeless 1946 musical fantasy depicting the love affair between Wild West sharpshooting stars Annie Oakley and Frank Butler has been somewhat updated for modern times. Not only has Peter Stone made revisions to Herbert and Dorothy Fields's original book (the story is now a show within a show, namely Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show), but there have been revisions to Berlin's original score as well. Some of it relates directly to late-'90s political correctness--"I'm an Indian, Too" joins "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad Bad Man" among the exclusions. But the tunes that made the cut remain some of the greatest moments of American musical theater, which is especially ironic when one considers that Berlin had to be coaxed into writing the show after original composer Jerome Kern suddenly died. Many of these songs--"They Say It's Wonderful," "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," "The Girl That I Marry," "Anything You Can Do"--have become standards on their own, and the revival thankfully retains the wonderful "An Old Fashioned Wedding," which Berlin wrote for the 1966 Lincoln Center revival of the show, with original Annie Ethel Merman reprising the role. Years after the fact, Merman remains a tough image to follow. But while she lacks Merman's brass and crassness, Bernadette Peters stands as the prettiest and sexiest Annie to date, even in the shadows of Mary Martin and Betty Hutton (the latter in the 1950 film version), not to mention probably the greatest singer of the bunch--her "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" is an instant Broadway classic. They overdo "There's No Business Like Show Business" just a tad in this new version; it's seemingly reprised endlessly early in the CD. But, hey, if you're going to overdo it, what a song to overdo it with. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Bernadette's Best!!.......2007-06-28
This is definatly the best Annie Get Your Gun recording, especially since Ethel Merman isn't in this one. Such afun show!! A definate must buy!!
Good for what it is........2007-05-13
I did the Natl tour of this so it has a special place in my heart whether it sucks or not...I mean but lets all be honest here! "My defences are down" rocks!! and I wasnt in that part so that make this even better. I can pretend all day.
John, NYC
A premiere Broadway Musical.......2007-01-19
A show stopper in every sense of the word. Every Irving Berlin fan should own this one. Tom Wopat (of Dukes of Hazard fame)is surprising talented, and Bernadette Peters is suberb.
3.5, but Original is better........2006-08-09
The 1946 Original version is better for many reasons, but the main two are: it has a completer song list, and it isnt affected by Burnadette Peters. If you are a Peters fan, this is fine for you, but her voice just grinds on me and I can't stand it. Plus one of my favorite songs "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" isnt on this recording but is on the other. There are really no other differences between the show. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful"
A good revival album.......2006-07-26
We did this show when I was in high school, but I didn't buy it until after we did the show. I just hadn't caught on that when doing a musical, buy the soundtrack and rehearse with it. Anyway back to the review, we practiced dancing with some of the numbers using this cd. So, I decided to buy it. Overall I like it very much. I'm not a huge Bernadette Peters fan, but I do like her. She didn't quite seem right for the part, but her singing makes up for it. Other than that the rest of the cast is great! The music is more updated which makes it more appealing to today's listeners. I just wished they would have released the new album with Reba McEntire doing the lead. She was playing when I was in New York, but of course it was completely sold out.

This terrific new recording of Cole Porter's greatest show grabs you from the beginning: shimmering strings lead straight into "Another Op'nin', Another Show" before the orchestra takes over. Then it's on to many of Porter's best-loved melodies and wittiest lyrics, including "Wunderbar," "So in Love," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)," and "Why Can't You Behave?" Art imitates life in this story of a troupe's performance of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, as the stars quarrel as much offstage as they do onstage, and Porter's score reflects this with both contemporary '40s songs ("Too Darn Hot") and Bard-inspired stage songs ("I've Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua"). Similarly, Don Sebesky's marvelous new orchestrations alternate a jazzy band with Elizabethan-period drums and recorders. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie (both alums of Ragtime) are in glorious voice as the feuding stars, while Amy Spanger and Michael Berresse shine as the secondary couple. Surprisingly, when this production debuted on Broadway in the fall of 1999, it was the show's first-ever major revival. The original 1948 cast recording is still great listening, but this is a Kiss Me, Kate for the new century. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
AN ENTERTAINING, MISGUIDED REVIVAL . . . . . .......2007-01-04
When KISS ME, KATE opened in Philadelphia on December 2, 1948, "the show and its dazzling cast . . . elicited an avalanche of critical praise. Not one song was added, dropped, or shifted in position from that moment until the Broadway opening, nor was the book altered significantly." (from Miles Kruger's notes for the 1990 EMI recording) Therefore, if something is so perfect, why mess with it? Why try to update it? Why attempt to ". . . [invigorate] the material with a contemporary sensibility that permeates everything: the way it looks, the way it plays, the way it sounds." (from Sheryl Flatow's note to the 1999 DRG recording) Would anyone even consider putting a blond wig and a push-up bra on the Mona Lisa?
Not that "the classics" should be never be fiddled with. It happens all the time with Shakespeare and Verdi and Puccini - sometimes with pleasing results. Sometimes not. The 2005 rethinking of SWEENEY TODD works admirably well (although I still prefer the original, more operatic version) and I understand so does the new revival of COMPANY. Both can be understood as reinventions that clarify and enhance character and motive. But this KATE doesn't work, because it's just Mona Lisa in a push-up bra.
The fault doesn't lie so much with the singers as it does with the concept. Perhaps KATE played differently on stage, but recording producer Hugh Fordin is quoted in the liner notes as saying, "I want a cast album to sound as if the performers are doing the show for you in your living room." How preposterous! Has he seen the size of my living room? Musical director Paul Gemignani says, "I pick up the pace, so the music is faster on the recording. I do that because the listener doesn't have visuals, and because it energizes the performers." Really, but at what cost. Brian Stokes Mitchell is forced to sing "Where Is the Life That Late I Led" at such a pace that it loses all nuance. Compare it to Alfred Drake on the original or to Thomas Hampson's on the EMI recording and you'll understand. Marin Mazzie has the most pleasing voice of all the Lili Vanessi/Kate's on record. Her "I Am Ashamed That Women Are So Simple" is lovely, but someone unwisely encouraged her to do some extremely ugly vocalizing during "I Hate Men." I see visions of nodes growing on her vocal chords as she growls through this number. Mazzie could take a lesson from Patricia Morrison on how to sing angrily without abusing the voice. Michael Berresse is a fine Bill/Lucentio, but Amy Spanger is too much of an air-head, dumb blonde (see Adelaide in GUYS AND DOLLS) for me. I prefer the 1948 (also 1959) original Lois Lane (Lisa Kirk), a fully mature and confident woman who definitely knows her way around men.
But most irritating of all, this KISS ME KATE, like many other recent revivals, does NOT SOUND LIKE BROADWAY! Robert Russell Bennett's marvelous orchestrations have been discarded and replaced by Don Sebesky's wimpy Las Vegas-style arrangements. Even though "So in Love" is beautifully sung by both stars, it sounds more lke "Sinatra at the Sands" than Broadway. And what's with the "Steam Heat"/"Cool" intro to "Too Darn Hot." This is Cole Porter, not Leonard Bernstein or Adler & Ross.
All carping aside, there is much to recommend this recording. But for authentic Broadway, you're better off with the original 1948 Broadway cast recording, even with its dated sound. The 1959 Angel "Reassembled Original Cast" benefits from better sound, but the performances aren't as fresh as they were 11 years earlier. John McGlinn's 1990 EMI "complete" recording offers excellent sound, an outstanding orchestra & chorus, every note & every lyric written for the show, a rather stiff-sounding Thomas Hampson, a Lois Lane/Bianca (Kim Criswell) almost as good as Lisa Kirk, and the strangest-sounding Kate you'll ever hear (Dame Josephine Barstow). An essential recording, it is now out of print.
The choice? Simple, you must have one of each.
broadway buff.......2006-03-21
This is a case of fixing something that ain't broke. Cole Porter is a master of musical score, his genius lies in the superbly witty blend of the story line, lyrics, and score. Technically this recording may be superior to the original 1950 Broadway version, but that's all. Modifying the score is an interesting effort but inferior to the original. The singing voices of the actors in this new Broadway cast probably appeal to the less-well trained ear of to-day's young adults, but to someone a bit older than that these, their voices sound ill trained, screechy and oblivious of the original score and lyrics. Cole Porter's elegant wit blows completly by them.
I give it 3 stars for technology, but suggest you stick with the original for pure enjoyment.
The Best Version out there!.......2005-06-20
I have to say this totally changed my views on Kiss Me Kate. After seeing the movie I thought it was good, but at times to operatic and it made my ears ring too much. After buying the broadway cast CD I pretty much put this musical in the catorgory of musicals I just didn't like that much. I got the new cast album as a gift and was hesitant to listen to it. I put it on in the background and was so suprized! Finally instead of the normal sing ever song the same operatic way these actors were feeling there music! I mean I can see why some would perfer the ballad operatic tones in "I hate Men" and "always true to you" because that's how they were always done, but I loved the attitude that this cast displayed by her snariling angry version of I hate men and the none operatic "Always True to You". There were countless other songs I enjoyed so much more beacause they didn't cause you to go death from having the same operatic ring to them. This version of Kiss Me Kate is the best ever!
zesty new revival of the Cole Porter classic.......2004-08-15
The 1999 Broadway revival of KISS ME KATE was a big success, running nearly 3 years and spawning a national tour as well as a London production (which was taped for DVD release). The cast album is a real delight. Brian Stokes Mitchell (KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, MAN OF LA MANCHA) is a grand Fred Graham, and Marin Mazzie is a thrilling Lilli Vanessi, the feuding ex-spouses starring in a musical version of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew". Michael Berresse and Amy Spanger add a playful sexiness to their performamces as Bill Calhoun and Lois Lane, with Adriane Lenox as a perfectly-belted Hattie. The orchestrations by Don Sebesky are bright and full of bounce; I especially love the bluesy arrangement of "So in Love". This cast album is highly-recommended if you already own the OBC with Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison and Lisa Kirk.
New orchestrations are revival cast album's undoing.......2004-05-24
The 1999 Tony award winning revival of KISS ME KATE managed to show there was still life in this 50-year old show. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie are ideal as a modern day Fred and Lilli. Amy Spangler has the proper saucy style for Lois. There was some (needless, though minor) tinkering with the book and the show's famous Overture was dropped. (That Overture must be jinxed: on both the Columbia and Capitol cast albums it was replaced by the Entr'acte. The 1987 London cast uses a new Overture.) The "updated" arrangements by Don Sebesky are no improvement on the originals, although the use of Elizabethan styled music for the Shrew sections is appropriate. The new recording includes more dialogue than previous releases. The production moved to London after its Broadway run and that edition was taped and has been released on DVD and is well worth checking out.
