A Fine Example.......2006-03-29

This has many wonderful examples of Anglican Hymnody performed by a lovely parish choir. I have recommended this to many musician friends, all whom have enjoyed it thoroughly. Of particular interest is Calvin Hampton's tune St. Helena set with the text "There's a Wideness In God's Mercy." This is rarely recorded, yet is regarded as one of the finest hymn tunes of the 20th century. It's a fine example of how the tune can dramatically shape the text. Compare this to the tune "Beecher" sometime and observe the profound difference in how the text comes to life.

Although the perforamnces are reasonable, the other reviewers failed to warn potential buyers that the track "Jerusalem - And did those feet in ancient time" credited to Blake and Parry only uses Parry's music. Some genius in the mid 20th century decided he could improve upon Sir William Blake's inspirational poem and replaced his words with his own puerile rubbish - that (for some bizarre reason) is the version recorded here (hence the different track names in the listing).

This is a marvelous CD and the hymns are elegant and sumptiously performed. A must-have CD for home or for listening to in rush hour traffic.

A truely fine collection of Episcopal/Anglican Church Hymns that have been nicely recorded by a 'fine' choir. It has been one of my favorite discs that I often replay!

It's ironic that just when David Wayne's excellent review of "The Soul of O.V.Wright" sends me back to my other O.V.Wright C.D's, I discover that this flawed disc of two albums and thrree demo's that O.V recorded for Cream/Hi records is currently unavailable. If you want what turned out to be the final instalment of his troubled life and recording career, then this is what happened, and because of its mix of styles I'd recommend it over and above the 45's collection - that is, of course if you can find it! Tracks 1 - 7 are his first HI records album " Into something can't shake loose". The two standout tracks are the title track and a version of Jackie Moore's "Precious, Precious". The medley that is track 7 gives up another attempt at Roosevelt Jameson's "That's how strong my love is" which is where it had all started.Tracks 8-17 are the complete "The Bottom Line" set. The two stand out tracks are "The Bottom Line" which is a really heartfelt reading of a very strong song, and "That's the way I feel about you". Incidentally the backing band, essentially the Hi studio band, are luminary throughout. Track 18 was the first Hi single "Rhymes" which never made it onto album, and 19 and 20 are demos, and there was physical damage to the tape of "I'm gonna be a big man". It's to be hoped that at sometime these tracks reappear in either this,or some other form, as all the tracks have been remastered and remixed, probably by Willie Mitchell. Getting hold of this album will certainly answer the question that needed to be asked after "The Soul of O.V.Wright", that is to say "What happened next?". This was the answer.
