While they aren't the first to do so, Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede make a direct appeal from hip-hop's current generation back to the blaxploitation era on Uptown Saturday Night, which recrafts the up-tempo, party atmosphere of the swinging 1970s, resplendent in the musical and cultural iconography of Harlem- and Bronx-style blaxploitation. Even for listeners who never watched Shaft, Superfly, or The Mack, Camp Lo's songs carry themselves with a cool air of slick styles. As critics have noted, Cheeba and Suede's lyrics are often nonrhyming barrages of key blaxploitation terminology that--read conventionally--actually make no sense, but their spitfire pacing makes up in style what their verses lack in content (which is actually a pretty good description of blaxploitation, if you think about it). Much credit needs to go to producer Ski (who was also the musical mastermind behind Jay Z's impressive debut, Reasonable Doubt), who shows a smart sampling ear with bubbly pop tracks that are infectious enough to rock the party while still appealing to hardcore hip-hop heads. --Oliver Wang

Great cd a must have if you grew up during the golden age of hip-hop !!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF BEST HIP HOP CDS EVER PUT TOGETHER.......2007-07-06

Let me give you some background. I brought this cd back in 98 around the time they first dropped. It was a classic then, and it still holds up now. This cd is so unique it's ridiculous. Nobody else sounds like camplo, 10 years running. For those that don't know the new album drops the 24th of this month, I heard the black hollywood track off of it, and it's crazy. Anybody who claims to be a hip hop head and don't have this album or never heard of them, please take they hip hop card cause they lying to us. Camp Lo is hip hop in this crazy a** rap world we in now. Ski producing the new album like he did with uptown, "I get krystal carrington ice rock griddy"

5 out of 5 stars Original Style from Da Bronx !!!.......2007-06-25

This duo is from da Bronx (NYC) and it is composed by 2 rappers :Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede.
Cheeba said:"Thanks to all the cats that laugh at my style and then copy !!!"
Camp Lo formed in 1995.
They are most notable for their flair towards blaxploitation in their style of dress and in their lyrics.

Camp Lo uses slang heavily, often to the point of near incomprehensibility. A typical example of their lyrics is:

"Casanova brown, levitating jiggy in da shiggy's / In la hotta car 54 chasin' diamond runners / Headin' ice-bound, where every chilla dime can get / Your Harlem buck strut freezin' world heist Hollywood."

This is one of the best rap records in all the history of the Hip-Hop !!!

P.S.: Please check up my rap listmania, just clicking on my nickname and clicking above my listmania. Here there are 40 Hip-Hop albums choosed by me just for winning people and not for fans of the mortal masochism rap !!!
I assure that in my rap albums' list you will find the best American Hip-Hop albums. There are dance beats and strong ones and lyrics just for the winninf person in the life !!!

4 out of 5 stars A throwback...artistic, nostalgic hip hop (4.5/5).......2006-12-06

Camp Lo's 1997 debut "Uptown Saturday Night" is a very underappreciated, unique hip hop album. The duo of Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede create a type of hip hop that is really unique and original. Their bouncy, happy rhyming style is just really fun, they both have cool flows and interesting voices, they really keep you listening. Producer Ski, one of the more underrated east coast producers of the 90s, creates dense musical soundscapes that are often just beautiful. If I were to pick two words to describe the sound of "Uptown Saturday Night," they would be rich and majestic. The sound is really nostalgic of multiple eras past, sampling classic jazz, soul, funk, and even early hip hop standards. This is one of the last great party albums, balancing the joyful banger singles with the toned, thoughtful slow tracks. I highly recommend "Uptown Saturday Night," this album is really special in a lot of ways and has been slept-on for too long.

The album begins with "Krystal Karrington," an upbeat, funky start where Cheeba and Suede introduce themselves as lyricists with their silky, smooth stylings. One of the best hip hop singles of all time follows, "Luchini aka This Is It." From the singalong chorus to the perfect horn-laden beat to the joyfully happy lyrics, this song is perfect, and there's not much more I can say, it makes the album worth the purchase alone. "Park Joint" uses a really catchy funky sample, I remember Pete Rock using this sample in the past, it's an upbeat track and a party-starter. "B-Side to Hollywood" has jazzy muted horns and the duo steals the show on the mic, the hook is great too. "Killin' `Em Softly" has a slower beat but some of the album's hardest verses. I love "Sparkle," a jazzy and beautiful nighttime song with another nice chorus. "Black Connection" has a sad and dramatic sample, once again the two rappers shine over great production, really bringing out the best in the music. "Swing" is another well-produced, catchy cut, and "Rockin' It aka Spanish Harlem" has some Latin influence. "Say Word" and "Negro League" are two lyrical highlights. "Nicky Barnes aka It's Alright" is dripping with style, and "Black Nostaljack aka Come On" is one of my favorites on the disc. "Coolie High" is gorgeous, slow and sultry. The album closes with an interesting mix of "Sparkle," it has no noticeable drumbeat and sounds like spoken whispered poetry.

"Uptown Saturday Night" is an album unlike any other I've heard, it has tons of replay value and is just executed with near perfection. The two rappers are so unique, excelling on multiple levels, and the production is almost flawless. I don't know if it came at the wrong time or was just above the world's head, but this one is highly recommended, it's a slept-on and underrated gem.

5 out of 5 stars This is what music is supposed to be!!!!.......2007-01-30

This album,really touched me,DEEP down inside...Everyone should be able to identify,with the songs,"Crush"and"Piece It Together"...Growning up,as a shy,bookworm(with a touch of low self-esteem)there were many girls,that I had crushes'on,who didn't know,thatI even existed!!!Not realizing at the time that(a lot of)girls'were attracted to,ME!I just went on,with my(eventless)knowledge(and comic-book)centered life...There was this one GORGEOUS(Japanese and black)young lady,that,I would've,fought a pack of ravenous Lions',just to spend 5 minutes,of conversation with!!!In retrospect(and sans' any esteem issues')I can see,that she probably,liked,me also!!Now,I realize,that she was(surreptitiously)flirting with me,all the while!! Like they say,hindsight is 20/20..Point being...I spent the remainder,of the schoolyear,admiring,her(from a distance)and never uttering a WORD,to her,because,I never thought,a,"walking dream"like her,woul even look twice,at the,LOSER,that I(in my lack of esteem days)considered myself to be!!She'd probably run in disgust,if I attempted to"holla"at her,I feared!!Zhane,addressed,this VERY issue,when they sang"Would he stay?Would he TURN and walk away,If,I told him?!?"That line,right there,is the chief reason that,I LOVE this album,the way I do...That,and,the touching"Piece It Together"Only song,I know of that deals,with the (very real)issue,of how much time,should a heartbroken,individual,give themselves' to recover,brfore,they "jump back into the swimming pool"That songs'lyrics'almost bring a(street-hardened)dude,like me to tears',when I note,the sincerety,in her voice,as these haunting truths' are sadly sang!!When DO you KNOW,when you've healed enough,to attempt,to start,a HEALTHY(trust-based)relationship,without hauling a TRUCKLOAD of SKELETONS'into,the"next time at bat"?!?!Confronting,issues'that"Crush"and "Piece It Together"talk about,is what seperates' this album,from the standard"that scum,cheated on me" topic,that EVERYONE,has made a song about,to the point,where it's cliche'and redundant!!Here,Zhane'takes topics',that are just as real,but not "run into the ground"by every clown,with a microphone,and a decent voice!!! I could go on for days' discussing this albums' fine points',but I gotta be somewhere,so,I'll go indepth,about my other beloved songs' next time!!Not to mention "Pronounced",but,I'll,write a review on that classic,in a couple of days!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-12

I love it... You can put this one on and let play all the way thru.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and Beautiful bar none...Soul and Passion with class. .......2006-05-13

I truly think the sophmore release is equally enjoyable as the debut release. Zhane has an affect on me like no other duo of their genre. It is impossible for me to skip any track while I listen to the cd.

I would love to hear more from them, however...it has been some time now since anything has been relased.

The music industry is only looking for the next money maker and many groups and duos today are so superficial and lack the passion artists like Zhane has. unfortuantely.

Zhane has a unique blend of vocal ability which demonstrates true artistry and professionalism and which is not found in the R&B music genre these days; granted, there exists only a minimal few.

I definitely recommned this cd as well as the debut release. Add class to your R&B collection. Zhane....Bravo!.... to both of you for two releases of true musicianship and true artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Zhane. Where are you? .......2005-09-13

"Have you ever loved somebody, secretly loved somebody who didn't know?" This question is smoothly asked by two of the industry's most underrated vocalists. "Crush" is one of those timeless songs that is beautiful in every aspect.

Saturday Night is the second album from this powerhouse duo known for up-beat dance tracks ("Request Line", "Last Dance"), jazzy mid-tempos ("This Song is for You", "Rendez-vous") and heartfelt ballads. Zhane effortlessly express emotions most can never find words for. "My Word is Bond" and "Kindness for Granted" are lyrical jewels that speak on love, longing, loss & the ever-changing components that go with relationships. "I want this to be all that I have wished for in prayer," they lament on "Temporary Thing".

"Piece it Together" features the velvety-vocals of Will Downing and Najee on flute. Another gem. Zhane were masters of melody and blended harmony. At times it is even hard to tell who is singing. Is it Jean? Is it Renee? The clever remake of Billy Joel's (love the finger snaps!) "For the Longest Time" is truly unique & Zhane definitely made it all their own. "Good Times" plays homage to Chic's 1979 disco hit.

Zhane was in a class by itself. This duo epitomized class, sophistication and a style that was often imitated but can never be duplicated. Their songwriting skills were incredible and poignant. "Saturday Night" is a classic to relax with on a quiet evening, curled up with glass of wine, and a favorite read, or on that drive home through rush-hour.

Peace*blessings. CLB.

4 out of 5 stars If you are a slow jam fan..........2005-09-12

I bought this CD in 2005, after hearing a slow song on yahoo music. The fast tracks are definitely 90s but the slow jams are timeless. Makes me wonder what has happened to this duo. Awesome voices... Track 9 and 13 are my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.

3 out of 5 stars Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.

Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.

Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)

The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31

First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.

While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.

If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.

The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.

Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.

Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.

3 out of 5 stars Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26

I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.

The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.

The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.

The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.

The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.

I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.

The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.

Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Math.......2001-03-15

Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.

Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.

Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.

When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large

Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

1 out of 5 stars No mystery here.......2005-02-07

Up to this point I was becoming a fan of G.E. Smith. He was like a train wreck on SNL, weird and maybe a little scary, but you couldn't turn away. Then I read that G.E. had backed up Bob Dylan, a guy who could command the attention of any backup guitarist, and I thought, hey, I've discovered someone here. So, intrigued, I bought his album, Incense, Herbs & Oils. I was pumped up when the CD arrived, and ready to fall in love with this thing. I don't know what I was expecting, but ....this wasn't it. Incense, Herbs & Oils is pretty awful stuff. It sounds, well, amateurish. G.E. sings, but he doesn't have a great singing voice. I think he is best in his role as a talented backup guitarist, but not the lead guy. Of course, it's different strokes for different folks, but for me, the mystery is over. There's a reason you've never heard any of this CD on the radio. It just aint real good. I am real disappointed. Darn!

5 out of 5 stars He loves to play almost as much as I enjoy listening!.......1998-09-27

Saw him play live last night at a nightclub and realize that he is not only exceptionally talented but that he honestly enjoys playing. NBC really screwed up when they didn't renew him after 10 years w/ Saturday Night Live. He combines traditional blues playing w/ red-hot licks. Excellent work!!

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-03-02

my aunt has this album and i borrowed it, only to burn it and never listen. then, a few months later i saw it and gave it a listen. i was expecting it to be good, but not this good. this album has a fantastic variety, great soul, honky tonk, country, and signature louisiana sounds. its like you're in the big easy. after a few listens, up to 4 of the songs were stuck in my head, it sounds stressful, but it was quite pleasant. if you want some flat out fun music and you're friends are "with it" i'm sure you'll enjoy this.
