I disagree with the previous reviewer only in one respect, he gave this CD 4 stars and I would give it 6 stars if that was possible. I grew up in Cuba and besides "sálsa en mi sángre" I have a large CD collection and this one is one of the best; I can hardly stop playing it since I bought it. The Rólo Martínez selections in particular are to die for. "En Cása de Pédro El Cójo" (while politically incorrect - translates to "In the House of Peter The Cripple") is a superb cut - really wonderful to listen to and dance. The Bamboléo "Yo No Me Parézco a Nádie" (I don't Resemble Anyone) is a Timba that while difficult to dance, is nonetheless intoxicating. I strongly recommend this CD - among the best in my large collection.

I am always a little apprehensive when it comes to purchasing compilations for a variety of reasons. First, the amount of compilations available today are staggering. It can be quite confusing unless you are a fanatic of Cuban music. Moreover, many of the compilations leave much to be desired. Second, why have someone else decide what is best? "Cuban Nights" is the exception to the rule. This diverse compilation represents the "creme de la creme" in contemporary Cuban music.

For example, sonero (vocalist) Rolo Martinez, featured on "Mi son, mi son, mi son," "La Ruñidera," and "En Casa de Pedro El Cojo" is a living legend in the Cuban dance community whose career has spanned decades. By the way, Rolo is still going strong. You can also hear him these days with "Cubanismo," one of the most diverse and entertaining bands playing contemporary Cuban music today.

Orlando "Maraca" Valle takes Cuban "Timba," (the hot rhythm in Cuba today) to new levels. His dynamic flute playing runs the gamut from street rumba to fusion and his improvisations will dazzle you and keep you dancing. He is one of the most dynamic stars in Cuba today.

What can I say about "Bamboleo,"? If you have never heard them, you are in for a treat! Their music takes into account the traditional roots of Cuban music as well as jazz, rock and pop influences. And they are quick to remind you that, "Yo no me parezco a nadie." Translation: We are unique, no one looks or sounds like us!"

For those of you who prefer classic Cuban music, there is "Laito", one of the most respected "soneros" in the genre.

There is something here for everyone.This compilation is also a sure shot for those who are curious about Cuban music but are not sure where to begin.

All in all, a must have. Listen and enjoy!

    I heard one track from this CD on our cable digital music channel for soft jazz. I ordered it a few weeks later. I love this CD. It has a good variety of songs, and all make for great listening. A nice album to kick back and just listen, or good background music. Very upbeat. Has a wonderful tropical feeling. It makes great listening in the winter months, as it makes it feel like summer in the islands!

      I was holding on to my LP of this album thinking they'd never release it on CD. Finally! I'm so happy to have it forever on disc. I agree that it's not her most spectacular album but I love the title song, (when she sings "oooh my macho muchacho, c'mon let's boogie" it's really sexy)... and the poignant and pained "Beautiful Thing" makes me cry every time I hear it. Nobody but Liza can tug at your heartstrings like that...all within one album. If you're a true Liza fan you'll want to have this one in your collection, most definitley.

      It is very rare to find a Liza Minnelli album that is not a greatest hits one.
      So this reissue was very welcome.
      This album is not Liza's best but it certainly is her most ambitious album ever.
      The title track is a very lavish production with a disco feel.
      the rest is a mixed bag of ballads, love songs and a very poignant torch song:'a beautiful thing'
      jimi jimi:is a rock production in which Liza feels at ease.
      A great album from a huge superstar.

      1977 was a busy year for Liza."New York New York" was playing,(I love the soundtrack,and there is something about the movie.I think one of these days its going to be considered a Classic)Liza was getting ready for her Broadway award winning play,"The Act," and "Tropical Nights" was released.Whenever they would show Liza at Studio 54,you would hear "Tropical Nights/Bali Hai," but thats the only disco song on the fantastic CD.Liza was working with the Jim Grady band on most of the other cuts.The record has a great rock and roll sound,except for the last number,"A Beutifull thing," a Beutifull,Orchestrated ballad.The duet with Mel Torme's son,Steve March,"I love every little thing about you," is another great song,written by Stevie Wonder.I was hopping this would be release in 1977.The late Minnie Riperton's,When it comes down to it," is the funkiest I've ever heard Liza.I can't think of one cut thats not enjoyable."Tropical Nights,"is a must have for any true fan of this talented Artist.

      While not her best studio work, Tropical Nights does contain
      some Liza gems. When it comes down to it & I love every little
      thing about you are Liza at her mid-70's best. The track Tropical Nights while campy and a bit overdone, does prove that
      Liza could have been a dance diva with the proper material and
      people(realized in 1989's Results). Overall a must have for
      true Liza Minnelli fans.

            This CD offers some of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy's most beloved songs from their movies. Their natural chemistry is apparent in songs like "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" and their individual talents are shown in the solos that they sing. These two legendary performers draw the audience into their songs and each is a special memory of the movie that it came from. Macdonald and Eddy were made to sing together. It is surprising that they were not sweethearts off screen after hearing their voices and seeing their movies. Their passion and tenderness towards each other is something out of a fairy tale. This CD has all the fun, romance, and innocence that was epitomized in their movies. It is a true treasure and a favorite in my music library.

            A number of years back, I purchased a CD by Calido titled "Tropical Breeze". It was during a time in my life that I desperately needed peace and strength from that peace. I found a good deal of it in "Tropical Breeze". The recording was done so well that when I found that Calido had produced another CD titled "Tropical Nights," I knew I had to buy it. And, I did. So, for over seven years, I have enjoyed the music of this master guitarist and his colleagues. My regret is that, though I have searched the internet, I can find no more similar works by Calido. (Calido, sir, if you are out there...please record some more. I am a devoted fan, but I don't even know where you are.) In short, my reader, do yourself a favor and buy both of these CDs. For professional execution of the guitar and overall beauty of music, you will not go wrong in purchasing BOTH CDs. I give it my CRAIG DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD rating.

            I find this CD not only calming, but a pleasure to listen to. Works good for party music or even Muzak.
