As befits the soundtrack of a music biopic, most of the heavy lifting here is done by the movie's subject: iconic French singer Edith Piaf. She was the Gallic Judy Garland, a natural performer who overcame one personal tragedy after another and was never more alive than on stage, forging an uncommon bond with both material and audience. Since actress Marion Cotillard lip-synchs in the film, the first 11 tracks on the CD are by Piaf herself, and give a good overview of her biggest hits (though we get the English version of the title track) and her feverish, ultra-dramatic style. But Piaf wasn't only a tragedienne of song: Her lighter side is represented by "Rien de Rien" and "Mon Manège à Moi," which she infuses with wonderful flair. Tracks 12-20 are made up of Christopher Gunning's richly symphonic original score (check out "La Mort de Leplée"). The last third of the album offers Piaf without Piaf, with contemporary singers Jil Aigrot and Maya Barsoni performing her songs (apparently because the originals' poor sound quality meant they would have stuck out in the movie). Watch out, however, for Mistinguett's hilarious "Il m'a vu nue," a slice of French music-hall history preserved in amber. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Piaf soars!.......2007-08-05

Those who have seen Marion Cotillard's Oscar caliber performance in "La Vie En Rose" will love this disk for the eleven songs she lip-synched so brilliantly in the film--10 of them by Piaf. The old recordings were enhanced with modern technology to sound great. The soundtrack's underscoring tracks and other filler could easily have been deleted. Only the Piaf tracks found their way to my iPod.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Period Music.......2007-07-20

Having seen the movie La Vien Rose, I knew I had to get the CD. Both are terrific. If you haven't listened to or seen the movie I suggest you do both. Excellent music/performances. Bill

The soundtrack to the movie by the same title is excellent. The restoration was superb. The voice of Edith Piaf is masterful.

4 out of 5 stars Last Flight Indeed.......2007-07-24

This show is definately for the true die-hard fan of Jefferson Airplane. When the band is cooking, this show is very hot. Unfortunately Grace Slick is not in any other form here other than bad. I have several bootleg shows from Jefferson Starship from this era and Grace is often much better than she is here. The last night of the tour, a bit too much partying before the show? It definately shows in her performance. While the drumming from Johnny Barbata is rather heavy handed, it is definately sevicable for the band. Paul, Jack, Jorma and Papa John hold this show together and really make it worthwhile to listen to. I guess it's worthwhile to have for the "Historic Show" that it is, but there's a lot better live material out there of this band.

5 out of 5 stars sit down, buckle-up and get off while you fly jefferson airplane.......2007-07-24

seems to me that most criticisms of the airplane are all sorta the same....what do people expect????.........seems that most that booked return flights on the jefferson airline did so for the experience........some rides were bumpy, delayed or even canceled.....but when they took off they shattered barriers.......today the experience is past but the atmosphere is conjured up in live albums like this one........i'm not sure what a five star rating is supposed to mean but this album will take you for an old fashioned ride......its a 5 star blast-off through an old foggy atmosphere and back again.....Fly Jefferson Airplane and Grace will get you there on time

3 out of 5 stars Not their best live.......2007-07-12

I am a huge fan of the Airplane, but they were more in their element in the studio. There has lately been released a number of recordings of concerts from different venues. Some of them are quite good. This was recorded at a point of transition and they had a new drummer. The performances are decent, but it's not the best sound design to carry the volume. Things get a little distorted. I guess the Grateful Dead set a live standard that is hard to match.

4 out of 5 stars One More Time.......2007-06-02

Considering the dearth of live material from one of the most seminal bands of the 60's, this release is worthy of anyone's collection of essential Airplane discs. Unfairly forgotten, relative to the endless marketing machine of the Dead, the legacy of the Airplane languishes due to an apparent lack of releasable material, live or studio. This CD is a surprise to anyone who bought the toastery vinyl disappointment of "30 Seconds". No, it's not BIPLH, but it's 1972, not 1968 ( a lifetime for the average band), and it's very listenable. Besides a better mastering, it's got the fiery essence of a band that doesn't know the fight's over, they're not to come this way again, and the outlandish time in which they arose will only be a poignant and pointless memory. Buy this album, and god bless Papa John!

3 out of 5 stars This is not the complete show! No No No and no!!.......2007-05-24

Hi there from airplane world:

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I had received so much email about this release that I hope I can share some information with you. The quality is real strong and the date is historic Winterland, San Francisco, September 22, 72. It was the last time the Airplane would fly until 1989 but...........

With plenty of room the CD leaves out the encore when Marty Balin returned! Dress Rap > You Wear Your Dresses Too Short is nowhere to be found! The most important tune of the night!

You can get the missing song on the Airplane Box Set "Loves You" but that isn't the point. You can not claim to have a complete show when you are overlooking a big part of the historic night.

If you don't own this previously you can enjoy the final time the plane takes off but you'll have to pretend you left before the encore to beat the traffic home.

Thanks and be well,
Craig Fenton

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Totally worth it!.......2007-06-01

I love this release! This is not the Airplane on tour, they're stretching out in front of the home crowd, in the park for free, and as Paul's banter with Grace indicates, the good vibrations were flowing. An outdoor show has anomalies naturally, and I agree that Jack's bass is low in the mix until "Greasy Heart" when they hit their stride. However, Jack is also not playing a lead line as he usually does, really just relaxing and establishing the groove. The band is loose and not as aggressive, except for Jorma, of course, who is SHREDDING throughout. This all makes for a different sounding show, and that's a cool thing. "The Farm" is a fantastic highlight, with Paul and Grace really giving it a lazy country feel. "Good Shepherd" with Grace on vocals, yes! These two tunes are worth the purchase alone. It's not fair to compare this to shows back East, because this is the band experimenting with new tunes and new arrangements in a comfortable environment and having a lot of fun. It's an intimate side of the Airplane that I hadn't heard before. What fan wouldn't want that?!

4 out of 5 stars The other side of the flight.......2007-05-24

Hi there Airplane fans:

As an author of a Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a collector of their music for a zillion years it is rather unfair that it hasn't been pointed out sometimes in order to get something you have to give. The quality of the recording from San Francisco, May 7, 69 Golden Gate Park changes throughout the disc but.............

Did you know this was the first time "Good Shepherd" was performed live by the Airplane and Jorma did not sing one word! For that alone it is a great find if you didn't previously have a copy.

Even if your first choice is another live Airplane disc, please keep this in mind for another day.

Be well,
Craig Fenton

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Sound! Skip this........2007-05-16

It's not worth listening to. I was really disappointed by the sound quality. Any store carrying this should be ashamed of themselves. It really should contain a warning clearly stating that the sound quality is bad.

3 out of 5 stars ... this is imperfect, but for Airplane fans, it's a gift nonetheless..........2007-05-07

Yes - the sound is incomplete and unbalanced. But I never got to see all these folks together on stage at the same time. In various lesser combinations, yes, such as Tuna, various Starships ('70-80's and the last 10 years), Spencer with NRPS.
But this is Paul and Grace and Marty, with Jack and Jorma and Spencer! (at 51, I am too young... I missed out on being there).
There has been relatively so little live Airplane out there - "...Pointed Little Head", the nineties Fillmore CD, Monterey, the excerpts from Woodstock and Altamont.
So I welcome all the recent live Airplane re-issues. I recently also got "Cleared for Take Off". Like this one, it is flawed, and, yes, it didn't have to be that way, the tools/expertise are available to deliver much better sounding CDs.
And I am waiting to receive Last Flight, the full '30 Seconds of Winterland' Winterland show. And I have preordered 'Sweeping the Spotlight.' I expect both may sound much better than these.
But this show captures a special time for a special band. Early public playings of the Volunteers material. Yes it sounds like a bootleg. And I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who wasn't already a fan. But I have enjoyed it throughout...

4 out of 5 stars Play this on your headphones as you stroll through Haight-Ashbury.......2007-04-27

This is by my reckoning, the fourth officially available live performance by the classic line-up of the Airplane. We've had from RCA 'Pointed Head' and 'Fillmore East'(both 1968 concerts). From Thunderbolt there has been 'Monterey' (1967 - uneven sound quality but wonderfully inspired playing from a fresh, innovative band). And now we have our heroes performing a few hundred yards from their newly acquired home on Fulton Street in early 1969. 'Volunteers' was in the making at the time and the band were taking the opportunity as they so often did to preview material they were working on in the studio. The sound quality is very reasonable and both Slick and Balin are in fine form vocally - in fact unusually, Grace provides the vocals for 'Good Shepherd'.The instrumental passages are extended in keeping with the vogue at the time and of course no two Airplane live interpretations of the same song were ever quite the same. One word of warning however - although 'Mexico' (recorded as a single a year later) is announced by Kantner there seems to to be some delay and indecisiveness - and having been tantalised for a the best part of a minute by the expectation that we are going to hear a very early version of this gem, we then have our hopes dashed. Instead we are treated to an absolutely stunning version of an uncredited '3/5 Of A Mile In IO Seconds' This little anomaly really should have been sorted out by the record company. But please do not be deterred - if you love the Airplane and their fascinating history, then you will love this.

This is a great set, but don't pay $75.00 for something that is readily available on eBay. Renaissance Records (the label that issued this anthology) has set up shop at eBay and you can buy this and many other great classic country collections at very reasonable prices. I am in no way affiliated with Renaissance Records. I'm just a music a fan that hates to see people laying down their good, hard-earned money for something that's extremely overpriced. You'd think some of these sellers were owned by Exxon or Citgo with the prices they've set on some of these CDs.

Charly McClain, born Charlotte Denise McClain, March 26th, 1956, is one of my all time favorite country/pop artist!! There isn't one song sung by Ms. McClain that I don't like. I have her Anthology cd collection, and I love it!! Every song on the collection I remember today as it were yesterday on the radio. Having such a beautiful and talented voice which came to an end in the late 1980's, was and is such a shame. Charly McClain is a beautiful and multi talented woman!! Charly was and always will be a great asset to country/pop music and should still be performing today!! Charly McClain, you and your VERY talented voice are truly missed!!

I once listened to Radio Heart & With Just One Look In Your Eyes from a country compilation tape. I couldn't help falling in love with this beautiful voice after the first listen! I'm a Chinese. It's not easy to get the original CD by American country singer. So, having a compilation CD like this has been my long-time dream! The dream has never been realized until today!
Thanks to the person in Renaissance, and Amazon too!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive retrospective of excellent pop country singer.......2003-04-13

Charly is one of many singers poorly represented on CD, but this 34-track compilation went some way to compensating for that.

It begins with Men, a song that highlights the dilemma that women face - they like some things about men, but not others - but it does so in a slightly humorous way, so it should not offend anybody.

Perhaps the best known song here is Who's cheating who, which begins the second CD. It was her first country number one and was later covered by Alan Jackson, who took the song back to the country top ten in the mid-nineties. Charly was a consistent country hit-maker in the early eighties, with such fine songs as Dancing your memory away, Sentimental old you, Radio heart and Women get lonely, to name just a few.

Charly recorded duets with Mickey Gilley, including Candy man (a Roy Orbison cover), Paradise tonight and The right stuff. She also recorded duets with Wayne Massey (her husband) including With just one look in your eyes and You are my music you are my song. Those duets can all be found here, together with I hate the way I love it, a duet with Johnny Rodriguez.

Charly did not record many covers, but the ones she did were excellent. Apart from the previously mentioned Candy man, you will also find Charly's versions of Make the world go away (the Eddy Arnold classic) and Band of gold (the Freda Payne classic) in this collection.

Some of the best songs here can be found on Pure country, the only compilation currently available, but it's only a substitute for this, which I fortunately bought while it was available.

Given that Charly appears to have faded into obscurity, it is likely that this compilation will remain the best compilation of her music available on CD. Buy it if you like eighties pop country music - if you can find it.

5 out of 5 stars Very good classic country music.......2007-03-17

This is a very good classic country album. If you like pure classic country, you will
like this album.Charley has a very good voice and sound to her music. Even if you
have heard it or not, you will enjoy this CD. Its definitly worth the money for a
music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Classy pop country singer.......2004-10-12

Charly is one of many singers poorly represented on CD. A 34-track compilation (Anthology) was briefly available and I've already reviewed that.

Charly was a consistent country hit-maker in the early eighties, with such fine songs as Dancing your memory away, Sentimental old you and a superb duet with Mickey Gilley, Paradise tonight, but perhaps the best known song here is Who's cheating who. It was her first country number one and was later covered by Alan Jackson, who took the song back to the country top ten in the mid-nineties.

My favorite here is Men, a song that highlights the dilemma that women face - they like some things about men, but not others - but it does so in a slightly humorous way, so it should not offend anybody. The Forester sisters later did a completely different song titled Men, although it uses some of the same ideas.

As an introduction to Charly's music, this is brilliant. If you are looking for her other hits, you'll have to track down a used copy of Anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Country Isn't Country Without Charly McClain.......2002-07-02

15 albums of new material, 8 compilations, and all that remains available on CD is a ten-song budget line collection. Once again Sony Music mutaliates the discography of one of country's premier artists. Charly McClain's vocals and sound were throughly unique; a quality increasingly rare in the swamp of modern country. She could sound simultaneously tough and gentle, with her unique instrumental sound making all her recordings become vividly alive. Twenty-five years after her debut album, McClain still sounds as fresh as she always did.
It's unfortunate that there are only ten Charly McClain songs available. (Renaissance Records which produced the extraordinary ANTHOLOGY series, folded a couple months ago). PURE COUNTRY contains nine Top Ten hits, "When A Love Ain't Right" just missed, peaking at #11. "Sleepin' With The Radio On" (#4/1981) has a bluesy quality, and might have become a classic (that is, if Sony Music would have kept the SURROUND ME WITH LOVE album in print). "The Very Best Is You (#5/1981) also comes from SURROUND ME WITH LOVE, her first record produced by Norro Wilson. That album produced three of her most recognizable, and first Top Five hits ("Sleepin' With The Radio on", "The Very Best Is You", and "Surround Me With Love"). It's a slow ballad, with the tempo and arrangement of a classic tear-ballad, but the lyrics state that the love is so good, the singer wouldn't want to cheat or jeopardize it. "Men" (#7/1980), from WOMEN GET LONELY is a light song, and pure enjoyment. "Sentimental Ol' You" (#3/1983) is one of the most unique country songs I've ever heard, and I love every second of it. Driven by a rolling honky tonk-flavored piano and fiddle, the lyrics express pure romantic bliss. I first heard "Paradise Tonight" off a Ford tape, after my dad bought a new truck back in the 1980s (I've still got the tape, and I'm still trying to figure out who sings what on it). An addictive duet with Mickey Gilley, "Paradise Tonight" (#1/1983), will have even those who dislike country music singing alone. Her first Top Ten hit, "That's What You Do To Me" (#8/1978) has a laid back, almost bluesy quality. Many of her early hits were written by Bob Morrison, including: "That's What You Do To Me", "When A Love Ain't Right", "Let's Put Our Love In Motion", "I'll Love Away Your Troubles For A While", and "Let Me Be Your Baby". "When A Love Ain't Right" (#11/1979) is structured the same as "That's What You Do To Me", but is a little more intense and the bluesy quality is replaced in favor of a country direct. "Dancing Your Memory Away" (#3/1982), has a traditional country ballad feel, but with upbeat lyrics about a strong main character. "Who's Cheatin' Who (#1/1980) was Charly McClain's first #1 smash, and it sounds better than ever. When you hear "Surround Me With Love" (#5/1981), you'll wonder how people can call a Faith Hill or Shania Twain song romantic. Featuring a gorgeous string arrangement and McClain's extraordinary vocals, "Surround Me With Love" is a song that goes beyond description.
PURE COUNTRY is an ideal introduction to Charly McClain's music (it'd be perfect if it had "Radio Heart" and "You're A Part Of Me"). First choice is ANTHOLOGY, but you haven't experienced country till you've listened to Charly McClain. This is a perfect way to enjoy one of country music's most talented artists.

CHARLY MCCLAIN'S DISCOGRAPHY
I don't know how useful it'll be here, but just look at how much music we're being cheated out of by not having Charly McClain's albums available on CD. This is a full discography; only one album, indicated by (*), is currently available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars collection from the most overlooked artist in country music.......1998-12-02

This is a collection of singles from Charly's earlier days, covering 1978-1984. Charly is perhaps the most underrated and overlooked artist in country music history. From the beautiful "Surround Me With Love" to the traditional fare of "Sentimental Ol' You" and "The Very Best Is You". This is the only Charly cd on the market and perfect for an introduction to her music. Hopefully with this release, Sony will proceed to put more on CD from her. Who knows, maybe she will return to the music and record again (her last album was 10 years ago). This cd also includes "Men", "Sleepin' With The Radio On", "Dancing Your Memory Away" and the #1 single "Who's Cheatin' Who". Also included is "That's What You Do To Me", her first Top-10 single. This collection allows the listener to hear where most of today's female country artists got their inspiration from. Overall, this is Charly McClain at her best, something you don't want to miss out on, especially if you like good country music. Country music that is a variety, whether it be traditional or contemporary, a slow ballad or a rousing uptempo number, Charly McClain does it all and does it well. In a day and age where a lot of country music artists sound the same, Charly is a fresh change from that, for she has always been unique, a distinct voice different from those other voices coming over the airwaves. Check it out today, you will not be disappointed, and it is priced to please. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I remember Barretto (The Acid Conga) player!.......2006-03-30

I personally do not consider this CD his best. He has other albums with better music. Barretto ranks as one of my favorite conga players. On this CD he does not have many conga solos but, the songs are very good. He was one of the first New York Ricans to interpret the Afro-Cuban music in New York, with the hit "El Watusi". To me my favorite albums from him are "Que Viva La Musica" and "Acid/Head Sounds". I still remember him doing a conga duel with Mongo at the Yankee Stadium during the Fania All Stars concert, it was difficult for the crowd to take sides between him and Mongo, these guys really put up a great show that night. The concert had to be cancelled do to an uncontrolled fight between the fans. I also remember him when he came to Miami (1977) to play with Fania All Stars at The Miami Beach Convention Center. The place was packed, and all the Miami Beach residents (Elderly Jews) were amazed at the enormous young Latin crowd. I had a good time seen all my favorite Latin celebrities on stage for the first time. It was a sad day for me when I was informed by my Puerto Rican friends of his recent death. Another good conguero leaves us. +Ray Barretto+ R.I.P

2 out of 5 stars Best of not so best..........2007-07-06

I'm a big fan of Joe Cuba's music which is why I bought this Best of Joe Cuba Sextet, but this best of album released by Charly is not so great.

The songs are of low quality (to the point of being muffled). They even went as far as trying to remix the original songs such as Bang Bang (one of my favorite Joe Cuba songs), which came out poorly. Advice to record distributors trying to make a quick buck with best of albums, don't mess with original classics. If so, then make it clear to the consumer and don't try to pass it off as a Best of album featuring classic "originals". Call it the "Best of poorly done re-mixes done on the cheap album".
