This is simply a wonderful piece of music. I have had the honor to see The Abysinnians twice in the last four weeks after many years of listening to their music and especially this CD. They are great. Spiritual, roots to the core, no BS. Judge for yourself-it's a classic!

Yes, the songs are all the same tempo, and they all start with a variant on the classic reggae drum roll. But in order to truly appreciate this album, you have to listen closely--not only to the lyrics, but to the inflection of the voices. This album is, in a way, sad; the songs are wrought with a sense of pain that other albums don't convey. Listen to the WAY that "Black Man's Strain" is sung, and the pain in his voice when he sings the word "Why..?" Or the sweetness in his voice in Reason Time, when he is pleading with others to just "walk and talk" so as to reason with each other rather than fight.

This album is filled with subtleties like this that make it unique and a pleasure to listen to. And we can all feel and learn something if we listen close enough.

Be transported to your favorite exotic island with lush sweeping music. It even includes the didgeridoo to add some more flavor. The bass is deep and rich. This super disc must be heard to be believed!

Mellow Electronic Swamp Jam. Just about perfect.......2007-01-14

After reviewing a few albums on amazon and realizing I hadn't given anything 5 stars yet, I decided it was time to get positive. Maybe the first album that came to mind as undoubtedly deserving a 5-star rating was Satta. This is one of those rare albums with no weak tracks; you don't put this CD on to hear a few favorite songs, you put it on to play all the way through and let the mood wash over you. Don't confuse this to mean that you can sleep through it, though -- the tracks are all strong and varied. While certainly a chill album, it is one that commands your attention regardless, throughout the entire journey. (Different reviewers have felt transported to different places through Satta; to me it's a journey through a mythical, backwoods swampland somewhere in the southern US.) And I dare you to try to make it through the whole thing without breaking into some head-bobbing. I wouldn't even use my beloved Shuffle function on this album, feeling that it would unfairly disrupt the hypnotic momentum that starts building as soon as you hit Play. Transcendent and defies classification.

MAD BLUNTED BEATS!!!.......2004-09-30

"Satta" is a very impressive collection of some of the most laid back and funky beats I've ever heard. Ranging from styles of Dub, reggae, rhythm & blues, world and deep downtempo, German duo, Boozoo Bajou has produced quite an ambitious debut that has already become ubiquitous on nearly every chill out album on the market. Rightfully so, because Peter Heider and Florian Seyberth really know how to create music that is easy on the body and soul, yet compelling and energizing at the same time. Songs of note: really, all of them--"Night Over Manaus" is a personal fave, though! "Satta" is hard to acquire, so whenever you see it for sale you better jump on it. Highly Recommended!

Fantastic.......2003-09-04

I don't know what is the reason of the name Boozoo Bajou but i know that as they are originals in the name they are originals in the music.
I can't find a kind a music to define this album, tribal R&B? fusion-reggae? trip-hop folk?
It's a mix of all of this and more, the total result it's a fantastic five stars CD.
I know Boozoo from the Costes collection (you can find Night over Manaus in the Costes La Suite)but here you will find the real spirit of this group.
Fantastic (of course also Night over Manaus) are Camioux and Divers but also Down and Out and Under my Sensi.
This CD it's probably only for few people (no easy to find)...but if you love this kind of music you must suggest to your friends as i suggest to you to order now your copy!

Satta! es de esos discos que si escuchas a pedazos o mientras haces otras cosas, sencillamente te aburre. Tienes que internarte, tal como Peter y Flo lo hicieron por distintas selvas del mundo recolectando sonidos. Reconozco que cuesta imaginar a 2 alemanes haciéndote mover con bases y ritmos propios de una tribu, pero funciona. Como resultado tienes un sonido reconocible en todo el disco que -como ya debes saber de la eletrónica- se va mezclando con distintos estilos, principalmente reggae, R&B y algunos pincelazos de trip-hop.

Si todavía tienes duda, estudia el efecto que tracks como "Night Over Manus" o "Down & Out" pueden generar en las personas.
¡Es imposible no seguir el ritmo con alguna parte del cuerpo!

This album is what it is, if you like the riddim and 'get' riddim albums, you'll love it.

THE BRANCH, THE STEM & THE ROOTS.......2004-08-24

TREE OF SATTA: Single-rhythm albums can be a fairly off-putting proposition for the uninitiated, but when you're versioning a certified classic like The Abyssinians' 1969 rasta hymnal, SATTA MASSA GANA, even casual reggae listeners stand to be impressed. The opening horns salvo (Deadly Headley on alto sax, Vin Gordon on trombone) is instantly recognizable, and leads into each of twenty selections hand-picked by original Abyssinian, Bernard Collins. The first nine tracks are of 1970s vintage, appropriately led by the genre-defining original. Instrumental cuts by the late, great Tommy McCook (tenor sax) and Lloyd Charmers (organ) are clearly the top picks among the early runners. Perhaps surprisingly though, it's the second part of the program - comprised of contemporary readings from some of the biggest names in the modern roots revival movement - that really takes off. Luciano's MAN OF JAH ORDER, Yami Bolo's CONSPIRACY and Jah Mali's CORNER STONE are all top-ranking roots renditions, while Capleton and Anthony B deliver suitably fiery DJ versions. U-Roy's BLESSED is testament to the veteran DJ's undiminished powers of vocal persuasion; it could easily have been voiced thirty years earlier at Tubby's studio - stunning! Further instrumental cuts from legendary guitarist Ernest Ranglin, and Dean Fraser (successor to Tommy McCook's throne of saxophone) are also of the highest caliber. When you take into account the exceptional packaging - which is the norm for Blood & Fire releases - including illuminating sleeve notes and track-by-track comments, and of course the strength of the source material itself, TREE OF SATTA's success is a foregone conclusion. A second volume is apparently scheduled for release in the not-too-distant future, and I won't hesitate to pay up for another installment.

By the way, it's nice to see Blood & Fire - a label previously trading exclusively in vintage re-release programs - supporting modern roots artists. I hope to see more contemporary releases from the label in the future...

NOT the Abyssinians!.......2004-08-16

Buyer beware! This album does not contain the music of the Abyssinians. It is a compilation CD of various artists covering an Abyssinians' song. Most songs on the album are just dubs of the original, using the exact same sample repeatedly. I love the music of the Abyssinians and many of the artists featured on this album. However, after listening to three or more songs, you may become sick of hearing the same rhythm/melody over and over. Maybe not. I leave it up to you. Pease&luv always.

A MUST FOR REGGAE FANS.......2004-06-09

I am not a fan of riddim albums but this a a very good one over the classic Satta beat. Can you beat Luciano, Capelton and all the other reggae greats???? all lovers of roots reggae need this cd

Dubroom Review.......2001-09-27

Both Heartbeat Records as well as French Label Tabou.1 have provided the world with a nice collection of dubs from the Abyssinians. Classic reggae from this essential vocal trio in a Dubwize style, that's something the people were longing for in the time the originals were released! Satta Dub contains 4 versions of the Satta Riddim: 3 instrumentals and one dub. Apart from these four tracks, 11 other crucial dub shots of which I enjoy each and everyone. Meditation Dub is my favorite, never before had I heard that the bassline of this song (My Meditation) is so wonderful! They are not the most spaciest dubs from that era, but this music is so essential in the history of reggae that it would be a disgrace if there would not have been dubs available by now. The riddims are beautifull, the Abyssinians themselves sound much more powerful in dub.

Satta Dub is certainly a high quality product because it gives a much better impression of the original sound then the other, US based Heartbeat release. A lot of effort is put in trying to maintain that original sound as much as possible. As a result of this approach, most of the imperfections that were present in the studios on Jamaica in the 1970's can still be heard. But especially because Dub is (primarily) Studio Music, this pre-digital sound is important for the enjoyment of the music. Taking away what we conceive as imperfections will also remove the atmosphere of the recording in such a great manner that for a lot of people it is unacceptable. So Big Up for TABOU1.

I love the Abyssinians and their unique and angelic vocal stylings, so this lp of dub mixes on many of their best known and loved tracks is both a blessing and somewhat of an irritant.

As a fan of dub, I apreciate what has been done on this album- taking many of their best songs and making tasteful dubs out of them is fine- indeed, doing such a thing is a common reggae tradition and allows for dance mixes and the like to be made, showcasing the skills of the engineer who makes them. The dubs here are rather middle of the road and not offensive- nice background dub music.

As a fan of the vocal stylings of the Abyssinians, while I appreciate the dub, I know that it was their voices that made these songs, so in that light, this album does not to the group complete justice in terms of their vocals.

Enjoy this lp for what it has to offer, but you should also get their studio lps to best appreciate the Abyssinians for what they did best- sing.
