Disappointing.......2007-07-28

It did not meet any of the expectations I had. I don't want to say its horrible because we are huge Lil Boosie fans but I nor my 14 yr old never play this one.

"Hail, Siegfried!".......2004-09-20

I have little to add to the enthusiastic review by John Austin dated 7 September 2004. Like him, I find this an outstanding release. It should tell us something that these excerpts from 'Siegfried,' recorded between 1928 and 1932, with varying forces, have rarely if ever been out of print. They were initially released on numerous 78 sides, issued in four separate albums. I owned many of those old 78s more than fifty years ago. They have been released on CD before as well, but never in such resplendent sound as that provided by Ward Marston. At the risk of repeating myself ad nauseam, Marston's way with restoring ancient recorded sound is nothing short of miraculous. He even got rid of a persistent hum that bedeviled part of Act III, and without substantially reducing the fidelity of the music recorded thereon.

This is not, of course, a complete 'Siegfried.' But it is almost certainly the most thrilling recorded performance by Lauritz Melchior of the young hero. He is in simply amazing voice here. Was there ever anyone, anywhere who took this role as excitingly as Melchior? I don't think so. His baritonal tenor reeks of testosterone, surely a prerequisite for the part. Friedrich Schorr is also unmatchable as Wotan. Slightly less exciting is the Brünnhilde of Florence Easton. The tiny role of the Forest Bird is sung beautifully by Nora Gruhn. And for those of you who know and admire Maria Olszewska only from her 1931 'Rosenkavalier' Octavian, here she is as the Earth Mother, Erda, in all her glory. What a splendid contralto she was!

I suspect this would be a wonderful purchase for someone coming to 'Siegfried' (and to Wagner) without prior experience. The abridgement does get rid of lots of what could feel like padding to the neophyte, and Naxos's price cannot be beat. Add to that the marvelous sound and you have a very attractive package.

I had three reasons for acquiring this double CD as soon as it became available. Lauritz Melchior and Friedrich Schorr accounted for two of them. The original producer of these records, Fred Gaisberg, referred to the former as "the greatest heldentenor of our times,....(one) who could sing and rehearse record after record without stress and without his voice going husky or becoming strained". He refers to Friedrich Schorr as "the greatest Wotan ... of our generation". The work of both singers is heard at its best here: Melchior's Siegfried is as highly-charged and vigorous as is any Olympic athlete; Schorr's Wanderer (Wotan) projects a beauty of voice and an authority that I have never heard matched. Of the thirty-six 78 sides that are collected here, Melchior features in 25 and Schorr in 5 of them.

My third reason is my familiarity with some of these recordings in earlier formats - even some of the black labeled originals - and my recollection that the recording quality for the era (1928-1932) was very good indeed. It is good to read in the notes that restoration engineer Ward Marston confirms this estimate.

Restoration is itself a miracle here. I doubt that anyone was ever lucky enough to acquire all the 78s during the years of their ad hoc recording and releasing, let alone have the capacity to join and hear them with anything like the ease and clarity that this Naxos release makes possible. The excerpts comprised here - some extended passages as long as 38 minutes - total a little over two and a half hours.

Tin can opera.......2007-02-04

What in the world?

Perhaps somebody from DELTA got the bright idea of using a cellphone to secretly capture these "live" operatic excerpts-- and not from the orchestra seats, either-- this guy had to be way up in the last row of the third balcony.

Luciano Pavarotti only recorded in the "hi-fi" music era, yet these cuts almost sound as tinny as Enrico Caruso acoustic cylinders. The only thing missing here is the surface noise-- come to think of it, that might have been an improvement.

When it comes to PAVAROTTI * LIVE ON STAGE, the fat lady sang long before the fat man ever did! A real stinker.

The Boyz Need To Be Discovered!.......2000-06-02

Here is another German pop rock boy band. If you've read my other reviews about German boy bands, you will see that I do like them better than the American ones we have today. The Boyz's album 'Boyz In Da House' is one of the best CD's I've listened to. It's got nice beats to it...and nice melodies and harmonies with the music. The Boyz have done and EXCELLENT job producing this album! Buy this album...it's worth the extra money!

I wanna say to everyone that has wanted to buy this CD, if you like the Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, Spice Girls, Five, or All Saints, you will LOVE this album. It may seem expensive but it happens to be a GREAT album, and I wish the BOYZ the best luck in producing more albums!!!!

The lovely Brazilian soprano, Bidu Sayao, who was born in 1902 (and still with us), had a small, silvery, and very expressive voice. It was for her that Villa Lobos composed his famous Bachianas Brazilieras No. 5. On this CD we hear Sayao's first studio recordings, from the early 1930s, comprising some nice Portuguese songs and excerpts from an opera by Gomes (Il Guarany), which exhibit a smooth legato and a bright tone. The other (and more interesting selections) are taken from broadcasts made between l948 and l951. A lovely duet from L'elisir d'amore (with Italo Tajo), two poignant selections from Massenet's Manon and one from Puccini's, Mimi's tender farewell from La Bohème, and a couple of other pieces take a back seat to the 10-minute duet which closes Gounod's Romeo et Juliette. Here, Sayao is partnered by Jussi Bjoerling, and if you haven't heard it, you don't know what you're missing. In all, an important release. --Robert Levine

A Treasure in Earthen Vessel............2007-06-08

Madame Sayao lived a long lifetime, and made some truly wonderful music. Trained by the great Jean de Reszke, she possessed a well nigh perfect technique. Moreover, she knew when to quit. [We can all name some who didn't]. This album gives some of her early radio performances, as well as several later excerpts. The two cuts from "Romeo et Juliette" are, alone, worth the price. Jussi Bjoerling is the most wonderful Romeo on record. Here, he is at his peak. He was, alas, a drunk, with the social graces of a pig, and died at 49 of alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

Bidu, to my mind, was the Juliette, Manon, and Mimi for the ages; in this recording, we get to hear two of the three. She may have been the most beautiful Opera singer ever, but that is not the point here. Her recorded legacy is, alas, rather small. Grab this; grab all you can. I'm waiting for front row center tickets to hear Bidu in Heaven; [and Ponselle, Ruffo, Malibran, and others]. Till then, I'm thankful for such recordings as we have. Enjoy......

Sensational Sayao.......2006-02-27

The great Sayao is now heard in impressive recordings from the the early 1930s and radio broadcasts from 1948 to 1951. The early recordings reveal a higly flexible voice with great ease in coloratura and an expansive upper range. The pieces are by Brazilian composers. There are no selections from her early European operatic career --no Donizetti (Lucia) or Bellini or Rossini, Lakme, Zerbinetta, Melisande or Traviata. This is a real loss since her voice in the early years of her career was of a subtle unique beauty throughout the range ---again with perfect technique and a deeply moving esthetic and expressivenesss. The recordings from 1948-1951 reveal a great Juliette in the Waltz song -better than in the commercial release- also the magnificently vocalized duet with Jussi Bjorling--There is an enchanting duet from L'Elisir with Italo Tajo, a lovely Micaela's aria and beautifully rendered selections from Manon Lescaut, Manon and La Boheme -comparable to the released commerciel performances. The recital ends with an exquisite performance of The Last Rose of Summer. The material itself unfortunately does not reveal more of the great Sayao such as French art songs--she sang Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc and even early French and Italian selections including Pergolesi --That Sayao is not adequately represented on discs in definitive interpretations of the variety of music that she sang during her long career is a tragedy. She was one of the truly great singers of the first half of the 20th century and one of the great Mozartians--could you imagine an Exultate Jubilate. Well just be grateful for the three CDs that were released.

The great Bidu Sayao at the start and finish of her career.......1999-06-27

Rarities contains 8 gems from the early part of Sayao's career (early 1930's, pre-dating her Met debut) and 10 radio recordings from 1948 - 1951. The disc is the perfect compliment to the two HERITAGE recordings which are responsible for the renewed interest in Sayao. The disc is worth the price if only to hear the pairing with the great Jussi Bjoerling (Va! je t'ai pardonné from Gounod's Romeo et Juliette). The early recordings, which were made in her native Brazil, suffer from weak playing in the orchestra; but her youthful voice has a brilliance and ease in the high range unequaled in her later years. The sound quality is VERY grainy.

The radio recordings include excerpts from L'elixir d'amore (1, with Italo Tajo), Romeo et Juliette (2), Carmen (1), Manon (2), Manon Lescaut (1), La Bohème (1), L'Amico Fritz (1) and Martha (1). The sound quality hear is greatly improved and are all live recordings. Her "Last Rose of Summer" from Flotow's Martha is a study in beautiful simplicity. As always, Sayao's shading, dynamics and phrasing set (in my opinion) the highest standards in singing and musicianship.

More Britten Than We Know Well.......2006-03-09

This 2 CD set is a compilation of recordings made by Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Chorus between 1982 and 1991 and a better selection of works by the brilliant composer Benjamin Britten would be difficult to match. Here Simon Rattle seems truly in his element, appearing to have a fine affinity for Britten's compositions. The works are indeed varied, yet for this listener the crowning work is Rattle's immensely powerful performance of the controversial 'Sinfonia da Requiem', a work with a charged history, having been originally commissioned by Japan in 1940 but later deemed unfit because of its 'Christian' identities. Would that the pacifist Britten had known what lay ahead with the world at war he probably would have not submitted this work. Yet as a pacifist the gorgeous orchestral requiem is a powerful and poignant anti-war vehicle. Rattle plays it with all of the quotes to future lines in 'Peter Grimes' and 'Death in Venice' subtly recognized.

But that is only one of the works in this well performed collection. Opening with the rarely heard 'American Overture' and early 'Ballad of Heroes' with Robert Tear as the fine soloist, the collection features the unusually lovely 'Diversions for piano left hand and orchestra' that Britten wrote for Paul Wittgenstein, here performed by Peter Donohoe (who also collaborates with Felix Kok, Jeremy Ballard, Peter Cole and Michal Kaznowski for the opus 16 'Young Apollo'.

Included are 'Quatre Chansons Françaises' with Jill Gomez as the exquisite soloist, several overtures, 'Praise We Great Men' in the 1976 orchestration by Colin Matthews, 'Suite on English Folk tunes' and 'Scottish Ballad'. The performances by the orchestra, chorus, and various soloists are on a consistently high level. This is one of the opportunities to really understand the works of Benjamin Britten outside of his famous operas and War Requiem. It is a joy. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 06

Great Composer- Great Conductor.......2002-04-11

This album is a must for any classical music fan and for any Britten fan in particular. Rattle brings to these great pieces a vibrancy and energy that Britten would surely have enthusiastically approved . Aside from some of the more familiar works of Britten's such as the powerful and touching "Sinfonia da Requiem", we are treated to the less familiar "The Building of the House" written for the re-opening of the concert hall at Snape-Maltings which had previously burned down. This shows Britten at his inventive best in a rare orchestral work from his late period. Also included is "Suite on English Folk Songs" which was one of the last things he wrote before his premature death and shows that tragically, he was struck down at the height of his powers. Also we get to hear two recently unearthed pieces that had been apparently forgotten by Britten himself-"Occasional Overture" and one of my favorites from this collection, the wonderful "American Overture". All in all, a wonderful selection of Britten's work with performances worthy of the material. At the two-for-one price here, this is a collection you can't afford not to have.
