The boys at Anjunabeats--who in their collective DJ persona go by Above & Beyond--have probably done more than any other outfit to reinvigorate the genre of trance in the last five years. This is largely thanks to their mix compilations, which have featured talents like Gabriel & Dresden, Kyau & Albert, and Smith & Pledger. So it's a bit difficult to explain how these tastemakers could see fit to include a track peppered with a geek-speak warning that laptop overheating results in decreased battery life (Chunk & Twist's "Battery Life"). But such oddness is soon forgotten with the entrance of "Essence," a predictably excellent effort from Jaytech with plenty of swing. Disc 1 also features Joonas Hahmo's "Together," an effervescent fusion of house and trance elements that works like a charm. Disc 2 leaves the gate with Maor Levi's "Shapes"--whose splice-and-dice vocals nod to James Holden's seminal remix of "Nothing"--followed by Marc Marberg and Kyau & Albert's "Megashira," a must-spin track that is electro on the outside and trance on the inside (and features an absolutely stellar breakdown). Volume 5 is the most electro-influenced installment of Anjunabeats yet, but Above & Beyond are careful to use the harder-edged stuff as a springboard to give their trademark euphoric material even greater effect. --Brent Kallmer

5 out of 5 stars Above and Beyond rocks the house again.......2007-08-05

So far, I have not been disappointed with any of the anjunabeats mixes. This latest one is no exception. I don't think there's a single track that I didn't like ... at first I thought the whole laptop deal in "battery life" was lame, but the more I listened, the more it grew on me, and now that's my favorite track!

If you liked the other anjunabeats, then this album is a must have. Two discs containing all good jams makes this an obvious decision.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-24

A Friend recommended it, they make great music, can't wait to see them live, i was impressed with the music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Above & Beyond Is Amazing.......2007-07-24

Simply put these CD's are great. I haven't stopped listening to them since I got it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Job.......2007-07-20

This is the first Anjunabeats album I have owned and within a few minutes of popping it in, I knew I had something special here. As far as trance goes, this album is everything you wanted to hear, perfect sounds and instrumentation. Just when things start cooling down a bit, they punch you square in the chest starting the next track. I saw Above and Beyond live at Electric Daisy Carnival 2007 and was able to glowstring through the entire set, eyes and mind wide open.

My only gripe is that it's two discs. I can't pick one.

Tracks worth mentioning? One Wish, Home, One Night In Tokyo, Needs To Feel, Formalistick... There are a lot of great tracks here. Have fun with this one!

4 out of 5 stars Worth twice the price for CD2 alone!!.......2007-07-19

As is the case with many double CD sets, one CD eclipses the other. In this case CD2 was far superior to CD1. It's not that CD1 was bad, but CD2 was soooo good. Having said that, I did enjoy a few tracks on CD1; namely, "Together" (by Joonas Hahmo), "Tomahawk" (by Oliver Smith), "Amnesia" (by Nitrous Oxide), and the excellent closer "Good For Me" (by Above & Beyond).

CD2 is a classic! If you love melodic trance you will be treated to pure sonic bliss. There are absolutely no fillers here, though track 10 ("Cold Front" by Remo Con), a "techno progressive" number, was a bit jarring at first until the melody kicked in. I don't believe I would be guilty of hyperbole if I were to say that this is the best trance CD I've listened to in years (with the exception of my all-time favorite trance CD, CD2 of Thrillseekers' amazing 2 disc set "Nightmusic: Vol. 1"....if you love melodic and high energy trance, you simply must own that set...check out also the latest release by AVB, "A State of Trance 2007").

The standouts include: "One night in Toyko" (by Purple Mood), "Make Me Believe" (by Daniel Kandi), "Home" (by Above & Beyond), "Oceanic" (by Above & Beyond), "Never Gone" (by Adam Nickey), "One Wish" (by Evbointh), and the stunning closer "Suru" (by Super8 & Tab). This is not to belittle the others, for they will prove to be ear candy for you as well. And I was impressed that Above & Beyond was able to take a rather old song ("Razorfish" by Tranquility Base) and give it new life in a refreshing remix.

There was only one drawback on the whole CD. When I heard the last note of "Suru" fading out, I was left longing for more. Oh well, thankfully one can always resort to the priceless Repeat button!!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant maturity.......2007-08-03

I didn't care much for this CD when they started playing the songs on the radio. Like some other reviewers, I thought it to be sub-standard of Jeremy Camp's previous efforts. However, the more I listen to it, the more I love it!
This CD reflects an elegant maturity. It seems that at this stage in his life, now remarried & the father of a small child, Jeremy has found the peace he has been searching for.
It IS much softer than most of his other releases. If you liked his "Live Unplugged in Franklin, Tenn," this one will grow on you!

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2007-07-09

I have really enjoyed this cd. It is a real inspiration. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys contemporary christian music

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a little different. But give it a try........2007-06-07

I love Jeremy Camp. He is one of the best things to happen to music (especially Christian Music) in a long time. The CD is not his usual and there are a few things I would say about it coming from a musicians point of view.

1. Sometimes the lyrics are a bit redundant. He rhymes words like seen, needs, memoRIES, vacanCY.... it goes on and on like that the whole song. As a songwriter he should know that sort of makes the song sound like a nursery rhyme. Maybe that's the effect of having two kids.

2. This is petty but he frequently uses the word CRAVE randomly. Maybe it's just me but I do not think this is a good word for describing how you need Jesus!

Overall, it is a newer, lighter, cleaner Jeremy Camp and I appreciately his work. It is not the usually LOUD rocker we are used to (with the exception of track 11), but if you buy for no other reason, buy it for "Give Me Jesus". It's simple, but powerful stuff.

5 out of 5 stars One of my best if not the best Christian CD i've owned .......2007-05-07

This project is nearly perfect. It has so much I cannot even describe it. Great vocals, great music, and great lyrics. That says it all!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-07

A highly recommended CD! Jeremy Camp combines great lyrics and upbeat music to make this one of his best albums.

Since bassist Lou Barlow left Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, the band--whose last record was 1997's expansive Hand It Over--has largely become an alter-ego moniker for guitarist/vocalist J Mascis. But now the original trio (including drummer Emmett "Murph" Murphy) has reunited for the first time since Barlow's split, and the 11-song outcome makes one ask: Why did they wait so long? Mascis's thunderous "Almost Ready," featuring both his combustible guitar and weary vocals, is the perfect blast-off, allowing Murphy's backbeat to set a turbulent pace early, and while songs like "Been There All the Time" and the Neil Young accolade "This Is All I Came to Do" have Mascis as primed as ever, Barlow (whose '90s-era Sebadoh set the bar for lo-fi bands) reappears with two of the record's strongest tracks: the poppy "Lightning Bulb" and "Back to Your Heart," which recalls late-in-the-game Hüsker Dü. These 50 minutes of music are as cohesive as they are conquering, and whether the same can be said of the once-prickly relationship between Mascis and Barlow will ultimately decide if this is a one-off reunion or if the real Dinosaur Jr. is back for awhile. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dinosaur likes his guitar!.......2007-08-04

A good album, not a knock out of the park where all the songs are a hit. Never heard them before so I bought it to see what they sounded like and what they had to say. As of late I am picking some hot titles and this one at the most rates a 4 star (more like a 3.5). Noticed right away that Dinosaur Jr. main instrument is the guitar and gets to play some raunchy licks which I appreciate. But being a devoted fan of Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Adrian Belew, David Lindley (among others) I do not think this is better or more entertaining. Two or three songs stand up to be counted and that is the story so far. Dinosaur Jr. likes his guitar!! (nothing wrong with that!) but a long way from being a masterpiece of contemporary music. Go figure...

4 out of 5 stars The return of Dinosaur Jr........2007-07-20

I bought a copy of Dinosaur Jr.'s Beyond album a few weeks ago with me being a hardcore fan for over 10 years and all the rave reviews I had heard about it it would have been sacrilege if I didn't buy it. What I had heard was that it was a return to form since Bug, the band's last album with the original line up in 1988. I'll have to say I've listened to this album alot and I'm even listning to it now as I'm writing and it took me about 10 listens to full apreciate this album. I bought this at the record store, put the cd in my car and drove home with it hearing most of the album on the drive home. It started off decent enough with the first two songs and then just got dull. I mean I thought this was pretty sub par for a Dinosaur Jr. album. When I was in high school I worshipped J Mascis and I still do but when I heard this I couldn't believe how stale it sounded. I even liked his first solo album post DinoJr, More Light, better then this. But me being the hardcore dinohead I am I kept listning to it and it wasn't until a few days ago on a very long drive I was listning to it I real.ly began to enjoy it. The opening song, Almost Ready, Starts off with a bang and is a great way to open the album. Sounds like a classic sino song to me. Crumble follows it and is also very excellent. Two favorites right there. Third song being Pick me Up which needed to grow on me but man I love it now especialy the solos on it and man does J solo on this album. Back To Your Heart is song number Four and the First of Two songs Lou Barlow wrote for Beyond. Me being the Lou Barlow hater I am I really don't care for this song. It's too mellow or something. Probably would have worked for a Sebadoh album but shouldn't be a Dinosaur Jr. song. Number Five is This Is All I Came to Do and the album gets back on track again. Another great writing from J. Been There All The Time is a nice catchy song that I like quite a bit. Next is It's Me which is probably the hardest song on here. Sounds very reminicent of Yeah We Know from Bug. We're not Alone might be my favorite from here but can't say for sure. Still listning to it and enjoying it. Now for a very embarrasing moment. Song Nine is I Got Lost and it is the absolute worst song on here. It's extreemly bland and boring and the shocking thing is it's a J song! I mean I can see Lou Barlow writing junk like this but not the masterful songsmoth of Mr. Mascis. Oh well every songwriter has a bad apple. Song number 10 is Lightning Bulb, the Second of the two Lou Barlow songs and believe it or not I actualy like it. It's a very good song and thik it fits with the album very well. One out of Two and bad for someone who's songwriting style I really can't stand. Then The finale of the album is What If I Knew. Which has a very similar guitar patern to Lightning Bulb as if it's just picking up from where it left off. So there's my review for Dinosaur Jr's 2007 reunion album Beyond. How would I rate it. I would say ****. The only album that this might surpass and it's a very heavy might is Without A Sound which was an album I also loved. Well there's my two cents anyway. Beyond is a very good album. I recomend you pick it up or download it from itunes or some software sharing program if you want.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Expectations.......2007-07-04

Mr Mascis, Barlow and Murph (original band lineup) are back to deliver this new incredible D Jr. album. Is a nice mixture of raging rock, ballads and country rock the only way this guys can do. I recommend the crushing opener "Almost Ready" and also for the first time on a D Jr. album is included a Barlow's song, the beautiful "Back to Your Heart". Definitely recommended for the non- or die hard D Jr. fan.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond belief.......2007-07-04

What can I say>?
Green Mind changed my life forever. It was *the* album to live by when I was in college, some 15+ years ago. It defined a thoughtful, angsty existence for a thinking, feeling American adolescent. And the drums, bass, vocals, guitar... they were all amazing. Honed to fuzzy sonic perfection. Mascis ranks near to Neal Young for literally being able to speak volumes with his guitar work. He just goes and goes and goes. The newer albums never lived up to the perfection of the classics, from the original "Dinosaur" to "Bug" and "You're Living All Over Me." But they all had 3 or 4 great songs that made them worth the while.
When I heard a new album was coming out, I was very skeptical to say the least.
Now I am in disbelief.
This new album, "Beyond," is amazing. Some of the best alt-rock songs recorded to date. And Barlow, who could be annoying and self-indulgent in the past, has actually performed some real winners.
This album is a gift to the music loving public.
I can't say enough good things about it.

4 out of 5 stars Lou Barlow Back for Beyond.......2007-06-29

To me, this is the best album Dinosaur Jr. has put out since 'Green Mind' in 1991. I probably am one of the few who didn't care for 'Where You Been'.
Of course those two albums didn't have the original Dinosaur lineup. By 1989 bassist Lou Barlow was kicked out of the band and that same year formed Sebadoh and later on Folk Implosion.
Only a couple of years ago Merge Records re-released the original Dinosaur classics (the first 3) and soon re-issued 'Green Mind' w/ three bonus tracks and 1993's 'Where You Been' (I only liked the opening song: "Out There").
Soon a whole new fanbase of Dinosaur Jr. sprouted and I do believe it helped ignite this reunion of the three original members: J, Lou & drummer Murph.
Yes! Lou Barlow is back and he writes/sings two of the eleven songs on 'Beyond' - "Back to Your Heart" and "Lightning Bulb" -which should bring a smile to any Dino-fan, that's followed the band since 1988's 'Bug'.
I haven't been a fan for that long, but I have been a devoted fan for about 12 years now, even when two of the worst Dinosaur Jr. albums were released 'Without A Sound' and 'Hand It Over'-

At the start of 'Beyond' from the opening chords of "Almost Ready" you just know Dinosaur Jr. are back with that fully charged noisy jangly bliss, they are known for!
Then on to two other near perfect Dino tracks, the swooning "Crumble" and the soaring "Pick Me Up".
As always exceptionally awesome guitar playing from J. Mascis. Yeah he's still got it! A highly under-rated guitarist that the mainstream should be taking notes from.
One of my favorite tracks is the In-your-face onslaught of "Been There All the Time" an instant classic for sure and just as good as most of the songs on my favorite Dinosaur Jr. album - 'Bug'.
I also really like J 's softest track on 'Beyond' the song "I Got Lost"-

Lets hope the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup is here to stay because this is the band's best in over 15 years.

Album Description

Tiger Army's music channels the frustration, loneliness, despair, and triumph of a lost generation, buzzing with power and dark romance. In the three years since their last release, the band transformed into an international phenomenon, touring worldwide with AFI, Social Distortion, Rancid, and Morrissey. Now comes this release. The band may have roots in Southern California's fervent psychobilly scene, but they're no longer psychobilly, just as The Clash can't be contained by the label "punk". With a newfound sense of pop melody, Tiger Army have realized a set of anthems for the dispossessed, songs destined to be sung along to in stadiums across the world. Produced by Jerry Finn (AFI, Morrissey, Rancid).

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-08-06

I thought this Cd was great, mostly the tracks in the beggining. However as the CD moved on the latter tracks were a bit repetative, but considering songs 2, 3 and 4 were phenomenal i give this CD a solid 4 out of 5

4 out of 5 stars Bravo, they still keep my listening.......2007-08-02

ok, i love this cd...I in fact love all T.A., so i do become very critical cuz i only expect the best, and they keep on producing...Emo, no i don't see it, to me they sound nothing like Hawthorne Heights or any of those bands...not even close, they sound like a rock band whose singer pours his heart into every song..i relate to his words, at most times dark, but always mixed in with some sort of hope..i love punk rock, oi! and psychobilly, because to me they represent what rock music is supposed to sound like, so this is why i am huge fan of Tiger Army, and i hope they never let the "real" psychobilly fans bring them down cuz they don't only sing about monsters and hot rods (both cool in their own right though mind you). I will support them till forever fades away (lol) as long as they keep it up what they are doing...by the way, nobody has mentioned Ghosts of Memory, its actually my favorite track on the cd...TxAxNxD

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album!.......2007-06-27

Don't believe the hype! Just buy the album and make up your own mind! I think it's a beautiful album, and yes, a slight departure from their previous, more psychobilly, albums. But Tiger Army have never really been ULTRA-Psychobilly, they've always had more melodic undertones as well as country influences on a lot of their songs and all of that mixed with some psychobilly gives you the greatness that is Tiger Army.
Musicians are artists just like any other type of artist, such as a painter, or sculptor... no one likes to repeat the same piece twice.
And for all of you that keep comparing them to AFI here's a little info... Nick 13 and Davey were best friends growing up... so OF COURSE they may sound slightly similar at times because they have the same interests and grew up liking the same stuff, PLUS they sing backup on each others albums! I'm a huge fan of both and I personally think they sound nothing alike, I don't know why people love to make that comparison.
OVERALL, the album is a great addition to Tiger Army's discography so just buy it already!!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy this album T.A.N.D.......2007-06-26

I've been a fan of Tiger Army for a long time, and I've loved every single song on their previous albums. I'm not dissapointed by Music from Regions beyond, so what if they sound different? it is still Tiger Army, Nick 13 is an exelent musician, and this album did not dissapoint me.
For those of you who say that Tiger Army sold out, heres what Nick 13 said at the Vegas Show on June 23, 2007, "We have not sold out, if I wanted to make millions, I'll be a F**kin stock broker, we love doing this, and we do it for you"

5 out of 5 stars A good sign from a great band.......2007-06-23

I had only heard Afterworld before I picked up this CD and honestly after listening to it, I both understand yet disagree with all the criticism this album is receiving. True, the styles of music covered in this album run the gamut. Most say this is steering too far from the original Tiger Army formula. I personally see this as Tiger Army showing their versatility which I think is a good sign of things to come from them.

Nick 13 proves he has a great voice that can do much more than has been seen previously and I really enjoy his voice on such tracks as "Pain" "Where the Moss Slowly Grows" and the Killers-esque "As the Cold Rain Falls" (or if you want it, Cures-esque). This may not be their best album, but it's of the same calibur as anything else Tiger Army has done which is great and the variety of songs on this album bode well for future releases, good work guys.

You've got to credit Kevin Spacey for sheer gumption: not only did he choose to direct a biopic about Bobby Darin (not the hippest of 1960s singers), but he also decided to star in it despite the fact that he was in his midforties and Darin died at 37. As if this weren't enough, unlike Jamie Foxx in Ray, Spacey performs all the songs himself. The hard-driving "Hello Young Lovers" starts off the album with a bang, the actor working with the big band with casual ease. While Darin is now best known for his swinging "Mack the Knife" and his adaptation of Charles Trenet's "La Mer" ("Beyond the Sea"), he also explored folk and scored with the teeny-bopperish "Splish Splash." Spacey acquits himself honorably in all these genres, though he's best when he swings hard--his yelpy "Splish Splash" lacks the required levity. No matter what you think of the film itself, what we hear on this album is an actor who wouldn't be out of place in a Broadway musical. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Among only a handful of entertainers who bridged the gap between '50s rock fans and their Sinatra-loving parents, Bronx-born pop legend Bobby Darin's life and career were short but extraordinary. In 1959 the singer/composer rocketed to stardom with 2 Grammy Awards-Best New Artist and Record of the Year for the #1 smash "Mack the Knife." His other signature smash provides the title for this biopic chronicling his genre-defying music, tempestuous marriage to starlet Sandra Dee, and untimely death at age 37-in 1973-from a heart defect acquired during a childhood illness. Kate Bosworth stars as Dee, and Darin is brought to life by Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey, who also directed the film and sings 18 of the artist's classic hits.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond The Sea Audio CD.......2007-03-09

Very nice. I knew after seeing the movie I'd want the soundtrack. The production work is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Sea - Kevin Spacey.......2007-02-07

I thought the cd was awesome. Kevin did Bobby proud!

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Bobby Darin.......2006-08-21

For those who enjoyed the movie "Beyond the Sea", which tells the life story of Bobby Darin, this will be a "must have" CD. Spacey does a surprisingly good job of these Bobby Darin hits, and the band really kicks. Spacey's voice is warm and the phrasing owes a lot to the original Darin versions. Fo those who haven't seen the movie, here's a collection of standards that will entertain. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin's music relived.......2006-07-15

The music is in sharp contrast to our contemporary offerings and a listener needs to make adjustments, allowing that this is the music of more than 40 years ago.
In particular the music backing is the first thing that tells us that this is 'different' music.
But it is of course enjoyable because of the Bobby Darin touch faithfully recorded by Kevin Spacey.
For maximum enjoyment, one should see the movie!

Album Description

Gaffigan is considered a true triple threat, having achieved major milestones in stand-up, acting, and writing. Under the white guy "everyman" exterior lurks one of the cleverest original comedians of today. An established star in stand-up comedy and a frequent guest on Letterman and Conan, Gaffigan is a noted actor as well, from comedic turns in "Super Troopers" "That 70's Show", and "Sex And The City" to dramatic roles in dozens of films and TV dramas. But here, his unique persona takes over - cantankerous but endearing, clean but cutting, with an irrepressible "inside voice" that keeps wickedly popping out - to the delight of the audience in Chicago's historic Vic Theater. Now you can share their guffaws.

5 out of 5 stars Bust a gut.......2007-08-02

I'm in my 20's and I listen to this over and over. His humor is really on the mark... But I like the fact that my Dad and Mom like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Funny, Funny.......2007-07-19

Jim Gaffigan's brand of off-the-cuff comedy is fantastic. From Panda bears to chocolate cake, nothing escapes his sense of humor. Not very appropriate for children because of some of his subject matter, although it is not too offensive or overly crude. This is a great comedic gem that will have you rolling on the floor--"Did he just say on the floor...sounds dirty." Get it, and you'll understand

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite .......2007-06-08

Jim puts on one entertaining show. A lot more funnier than the Blue Comedy guys.

5 out of 5 stars best funny man I have heard.......2007-05-15

Jim Gaffigan rocks! He is the funniest (and in this CD) cleanest comedian I have heard. I must now get his older stuff and await the day he comes out with a new one... I would give my left arm to see his live show!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-05-12

Wonderful, clean humor. I saw him in person and had to get this CD. He really keeps you laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenly Classic Rock of the 1st order........2007-08-05

At time of writing, there were 139 reviews, so there is obviously no need of mentioning the members to you again. The closest you can compare this album would be to the Classic early 70s Gillan era Deep Purple, BUT I would like to make the bold statement of saying, overall, this album is better than ANY Deep Purple album. It is a total disgrace that a band like this did not achieve major success. The first three songs (Armworth/Myopic Void/Dancing Madly backwards) actually join together so as to make it one musical piece and it is totally mindblowing Rock n Roll at its best PERIOD! Every track is a winner. Sufficiently Breathless, the next release, is a worthy follow up to this debut, but their 3rd and final album, Dawn Explosion (Without Rod Evans), I personally found to be disappointing and not surprisingly, singled the end of a band which should have been up there with the likes of Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Deep Purple etc. This album is a timeless Classic which you can never tire of.

4 out of 5 stars "As The Moon Speaks" it tells you to purchase this gem from 1972.......2007-07-11

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

It is appropriate that one of the many timeless tunes on the debut Captain Beyond record is called "I Can't Feel Nothin'." Simply put the first listen to the 1972 album will leave you wiped out. Thirteen tracks blending from one to another will rip your guts out with enough firepower to rock a city block.

To give you an indication what Capricorn Records thought of Captain Beyond, the label's forte was an outlet for southern rock artists. Once the executives heard the band not only had the pedigree with former Deep Purple front man Rod Evans, Bobby Caldwell on drums (Johnny Winter), and one time Iron Butterfly personal Lee Dorman (bass), and Larry Reinhardt (guitar) but an arsenal of material to take over a small country, the deal was done.

If you appreciate the mark Evans left on the first three studio albums for Deep Purple this venture will only escalate it. Easily one of the most underrated singers from the 60's and 70's. Maybe some had trepidation that he could pull off the vocals on the rock and roll battlefield but any doubt was erased the first time the Captain landed on the turntable.

Mesmerization Eclipse, Raging River Of Fear, Frozen Over, and Astral Lady are four of the tracks that reach for your lungs. The sheer power and aggression of the musicians is a tribute to the way they crafted the journey. At times you are on a heavy metal rocket and then you soar into the land of progressive rock. The genius here is not one track is over four minutes! How can such intense sounds resonate without reaching for the eight to ten minute period? By blending the tunes into each other think of the record not as thirteen separate short tracks but one thirty-five minute epic. From the sun to the stars and back, the Captain has taken your mind.

Over the years it is interesting how many fans of Captain Beyond do not own the two Warhorse albums (Self-titled and Red Sea both with amazing bonus tracks) featuring Rod Evan's Deep Purple friend Nick Simper and how many Warhorse fans have never owned a Captain Beyond recording. If you are into one of the bands you will find appreciation for the other.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2007-06-23

I'm only 25 years old. I wasn't around when this album came out. My parents don't know who they are either. Luckily, I've had an obsession with classic rock for over 20 years now, which means since Kindergarten! I found out about Captain Beyond thanks to the internet.

What's amazing is how a classic rock band that doesn't get any attention on the radio stations somehow managed to gather up many fans and reviews here on amazon. That's truly incredible.

Once you listen to the music on this album, you'll quickly understand why so many people make a big deal over them. The Who may be the loudest classic hard rock band, and Black Sabbath may slide in to second place. But Captain Beyond is clearly third.

There's only so much you can do to a hard rock formula before it all starts sounding the same, yet somehow these guys had a certain talent to make their music sound like NOTHING anybody else was doing at the time. It's so loud, and instantly enjoyable. This is what you call "in your face" rock and roll. It's gotta be some of the loudest classic rock ever put on record. Furthermore, the music is very heavy and catchy, with a strong focus being on the drumming. It's out of this world.

Captain Beyond really does deserve to be remembered.

To those of recent years that have commented APPROVINGLY of this first Captain Beyond album, You're right on !!!
I haven't commented till now, but I could have many years ago. I can't add anything to the heartfelt and well-put comments on this band's excellence. Obviously, some of us are of this 2nd half-century mark that have been around long enough to have heard, listened, and appreciated the likes of Deep Purple mark I and Iron Butterfly through to their Metamorphasis; enough to appreciate Rod Evans, Rhino, and the incomparable bassist Lee Dorman in a band together and with as good of results as they get here. I'm listening to it right now, 35 years later, and am still blown away. They just DO NOT make music like this anymore.

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16

This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.

I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-03-11

I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.

5 out of 5 stars whoa........2006-09-04

"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17

I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.

5 out of 5 stars Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08

The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

Simply the best trance album of 2006. Listening to the whole album, one can enjoy a definitive experience of "future sound of trance" . Hard to pick a favorite, but one thing is for sure : "Air for Life" will be a true trance classic.

I have heard these guys play before live there are off the chain . It was a little to soft for me But ok . I think they put way to many vocal songs on the cd but over all they did a good job . It was ok but not the best cd over all put in 2006 far from it .

4 out of 5 stars HELP I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT!!.......2007-03-12

Oh my god, this cd is simply awesome. It is relaxing and upbeat at the same time. I can play it in the car on my way to work when I'm stuck in traffic, or at home at night when I dim the lights, it fits both environments. My best songs are mostly the vocal ones.

Stealing Time- I can relate to the songs lyrics
Can't Sleep- Very etheral vocals, heavenly!
Hope, and Liquid Love- nice instrumentals, flows well with Can't sleep
Alone Tonight- clever lyrics in this song

Overall the album is great and is one of the most unique CD's in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I own.......2007-03-10

Excellent cd as others have noted.
Most of the tracks are great.

Standouts are: Air for Life, and: Can't Sleep. They are simply superb. Great music with variations of driving beats and soft interludes. Female vocals that are almost hypnotic.

Track: Good for me, is great as well. Soft, with great vocals.

Most of the other tracks are very good, but as noted by one of the other reviewers, I did not like voice of the male singer(s) on what otherwise would have been very good, if not great, songs.

It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!!!.......2006-01-15

One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !.......2005-12-06

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.
