This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

This heartfelt homage by Lolita Flores to her mother Lola Flores "La Faraona" is melancholy and uplifting all at once. Lolita's voice is just as rich as her mother's, but deeper. Lolita's emotion and love for her mother comes through sharply and tenderly. Those of us familiar with La Faraona cannot help getting teary eyed and even having a good cry from listenting to daughter and mother sing together on one of the tracks. The nostalgia and yearning the of Spain of yesteryear fills the heart. A must have for true flamenco puro aficionados.

Bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez put mambo as well as the jazzy jam sessions known as descargas on the map. The Miami-based actor/percussionist Andy Garcia resurrected him from obscurity with the popular Master Sessions recordings in the 1990s. This CD and DVD, recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, is Cachao's fourth collaboration with Garcia. The ageless bandleader's deep arco and pizzicato basslines anchor an all-star group, which includes salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch, timbalero Orestes Vilato, and tresguitarist Neslon Gonzalez. They lay down the Afro-Cuban rhythms that range from the changui to the rumba. "Mambo Cambio de Swing" links Havana to Harlem, while "Guajira Clasica" marries Bartokian style with the Cuban countryside. There is no dropoff in quality here. I have yet to hear any of Cachao's performances that are of the two or three star variety. That, frankly, is insane.

Chucho El Cubano.......2006-05-29

I have been listening to Cachao for years and I have all his music. I think this is his best album to date. Yes, I love Master Sessions I and II, but this album gets the most playing time at my house, my car, and my office. Cachao's rendition of "Si me pudieras querer" is just plain beautiful, and "Una Descarga a Cachao" gets my wife and me dancing every time. This is a great album of Cuban music, so enjoy it!

Este disco de musica tradicional Cubana trae mucho sabor. Los musicos son de gran calidad y los areglos muy buenos. Mi otro disco de Cachao es Master Sessions 1 y ese definitivamente es mejor. Si tienes ese disco quizas encuentres, como yo, que este no tiene la misma pasion.
Andy Garcia esta demasiado metido en este disco para mis gustos, la composicion de Andy, "Descarga a Cachao" no fue tan interesante como las otras canciones, pero al menos es salvada por los musicos talentosos. Lo unico interesante del DVD es ver a Cachao tocando el bajo, mucho de lo demas es un poco aburrido.
"Protesta abakua" es mi tema favorito, ya que tiene un sonido muy diferente de la musica latina contemporanea que es bien relajante con una buena parte para la flauta. Pero honestamente todos los temas tienen algo bueno.

This album is good. The music is timeless and it's just as good as all of Cachaos other albums. I also recommend Angel Melendez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra's self titled debut for something a little more refreshing.

Nothing new here, but the Power is Undeniable. .......2004-09-25

Alright. Cachao has a new one. I have loved his music since I first heard him around 10 years ago. On this album, he is doing what he has always done - nothing really out of the ordinary. It has been done before, and just as good. But, for some reason, I do not get tired of it. The power, the swing of the music is still as compelling as ever. And, as opposed to the other reviewer, I don't think the production is bad at all. Cachao's previous CD, "Cuba Linda" sounded great, and so does this one. If you like Cachao, you will like this album. While it offers nothing new, it is still worth a try, especially because of the DVD. I found it to be quite good in offering an inside look at the conception of the music, and the performances are great. Cachao may not be breaking new ground, but no one can deny he is still the master of Afro-Cuban styles he helped create. Cachao is the uncle of Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, who made quite a unique CD you should check out. As for Cachao,Sr., he is still making what he does best, and I am grateful for that.

Ahora que si and que bola are the best spanish hip hop albums ever. The production and the lyrics on ahora que si are exceptional. All the songs are great, but my favorites so far are libertad, a veces, no es lo mismo, Isla bonita, arte de la calle, ahora que si, nada mas, and son de la loma. What I like most about don dinero is the fact that he puts out more hit songs on one album than other artist put out on three albums(spanish or english).

Best Spanish Band in all this f**** WORLD.......2005-12-10

La Polla Records was the best Punk band in spain, all their albums are really excellent, lyrics, music, rage, but Salve (1st LP) i think is the best, form beginning to end..i have all their albums, all are good, if you like their music, you need all their albums, la polla records, then la polla, then another projects from Evaristo (vocals), as The Meas, The Kagas, and actually GAtillazo..all are the same line as La POlla,,if you like this band, you can listne to another great bands from Spain, Eskorbuto, Reincidentes, Siniestro Total.

Punks not dead......

The best album made in the Basque Country.......2005-05-23

No doubt this album is the seminal example of the punk-rock made in the Basque Country in the 1980s. It is a real treasure that the band from Agurain (Araba, Basque Country) gave us. It contains punk anthems like "Venganza" and "Txus", the anti commercial-punks "Muy punk", or the sacrilege song "Salve". All songs are sung in Spanish. The lyrics are absolutely clever!

This album drips with the raw energy in which it was made. La Polla Records were at the vanguard that introduced the phenomenon known as "Rock Radikal Vasco", or in english, Radical Basque Rock.

The album was and still is a protest against everything that they considered unjust, with the group attacking just about everyone and everything. An understanding of spanish helps if you want to comprehend what the group stands for. The lyrics are not only angry, but are filled with wit and are very funny.

Do yourself a favour and open your music collection to a group that revolutionised spanish rock from the outside. The Basque Country. Gora Euskadi!!!

Salve...la pieza maestra de la polla.......2003-01-06

Si de verdad te gusta el punk espanol, este es el disco que define el genero. No solo por el hecho de la musica y las letras, sino tambien porque fue grabado en el lugar y en el momento perfecto.

Album Description

The solo album from the founding member of Nortec Collective features remixes of Nortec tracks as well as indie faves like Calexico, Her Space Holiday, David J (Love & Rockets, Bauhaus), and Latinsizer. Panoptica creates and performs a type of music called Nortec - a fusion of norteno and techno, describing the collision between the style and culture of electronic and traditional Mexican music.

Chill'n ambient dance grooves.......2007-06-03

This disc is much spacier than other Nortec music but nonetheless still pretty tight. The music is less dense and more atmospheric than previous Nortec releases. There is also more of an ambient style to this disc with tracks filtering in lingering and resonating music to fill the skewed norteno beatz. It is innovative and very different but it does require some patience as it doesn't grab you immediately like other Nortec norteno inspired musical releases. There is lots of dub style music with a Latin flavor. The music lies somewhere within the realm of electronica of chill and dance but is more chill than dance. At times it can get a bit repititious but there is enough varity to keep it interesting. Some of the more creative tracks include Calexico's "Guero Canela" that takes off with the familiar Nortec signature, "Cuete Dub" by Panoptica which features a speedy version of dub complete with trippy esoteric vocal samples and beatz,"Autobanda" a sort of Mexican takeoff on Kraftwerks Autoban tha is good cruising music for going along the Pacific Ocean enroute to Ensenada,"Lydia" a groovy ambient song that reminds me of a Mexican version of B-Tribe and "El Ya Sabia" that begins with strumming guitar samples and morfs into an atmospheric-ambient rich song. I wouldn't start here if you want to hear some good Mexican electronica but rather with one of the Nortec releases or Panoptica's other release. Not the best of Mexican electronica but still pretty good for something different and pushing the envelope within the electronica genre. I would say it is a 3.5 but give it the benefit of 4 stars for innnovation. Recommended for fans of electronica looking for something different.

Not the best Panoptica disc.......2006-07-28

For me, someone who has almost all the recorded material of Panoptica, this is not the best choice. I was expecting this disc had Panoptica's style mixes from excellent Nortec Collective's tracks, I got a little bit disappointed. Since I've heard most of the tracks mixed in this disc, I got confused about the final result: a non Nortec style set of mixed tracks. There is only one good track, it is called SEM, originally recorded by Latinsizer. It has great beats from its original style and Panoptica gives it a great set of loops and mood. If you expect listening to a great work from Panoptica, consider the disc called Panoptica, this includes tracks from different styles and you'll never get disappointed with this disc.

Viva Nortec, Viva Panoptica!.......2005-11-26

After hearing Panoptica's remix of the Calexico track a few times on KCRW here in LA, I decided to go out and buy Panoptica's solo remix album "Ahora Yo a Ti" - I was not disappointed!

The album largely features remixes of others' works, be it Calexico, Her Space Holiday, and of course Panoptica's own group Nortec Collective. This is an album that grows on you with repeat listens. While not as in-your-face infectious as Nortec Collective's most recent album "Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3", Panoptica has crafted a cerebral and highly enjoyable solo album that open-minded listeners will enjoy.
