Mateos, pop rock maximus.......2001-06-12

Bar Imperio resultó ser una muy grata sorpresa. Sí, es cierto que es pop en su mayoría, pero es pop hecho con una calidad increíble. Hay variedad músical, variedad temática. De todos los temas, el más profundo (lo oído 1,000 veces y todavía le sigo encontrando un ángulo diferente, temática como musicalmente e impactante es Panorama. En fin, el señor Mateos es un profesional y lo demuestra con garra en este trabajo. Esperemos que los trabajos que le sigan superen a este.

This album is welcome, especially after his last disc, the overproduced, almost-unlistenable "Pisanlov." This features a more melodic selection of songs and lyrics that are more grounded and less pretentious. It doesn't approach his great work of the '80s ("Cuando Seas Grande," etc.), but it's better than anything he's done lately.

Small big band??.......2004-06-24

It seems that the small band experience of this group often made it difficult for them to use the full power of a "big band." I often thought I was listening to a really talented quintet instead of a big band. In some pieces, of course, the full power of the "big band" came through such as in Danny Boy. It's a great group but I wish that their arrangements were more oriented to using the full power of the band on all the cuts.

Very Fine Big Band Be-Bop.......2003-04-14

Danny D'Imperio is a jazz drummer of great experience who favors the small group bop and hard bop styles. He also has considerable big band experience with bands such as Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and the Buddy Rich ghost band (a great honor, one would imagine!) He has put it all together in this fine CD by assembling a cracking big band of NYC area heavyweights to blow some hot be-bop charts.

Many big bands are built on the talents of a gifted composer/arranger, but this band is somewhat different. There are certainly some decent charts here, but they are not the focus. Rather, the spotlight here is on the band's exceptional soloists and the charts are opened up considerably to allow them plenty of room to blow. The two soloists who stand out for me are baritonist Gary Smulyan and pianist Barry Harris who guests on 3 charts. But their superb performances do not detract from the other fine soloists who include altoist Gary Pribeck, tenorist Eric Alexander, guitarist Peter Bernstein, trombonist John Mosca, as well as trumpeters Dave Stahl, Chris Persad, Joe Magnarelli and Greg Gisbert. All make their mark. D'Imperio takes no solos but is content to sit back and drive the band through these hard-swinging charts.

The CD begins with the biting trumpet feature "Three More Foxes" by Willie Maiden and continues for the most part with strong bop and blues based originals which come from the centre of the jazz tradition. The eight charts are by eight different arrangers and two of my favorites are Ray Brown's arrangement of Sam Jones' "Del Sasser" and Alan Broadbent's original blues (from the Herman book) "Adam's Apple." Trumpeter Dave Stahl blows beautifully in all registers on Don Sebesky's lovely arrangement of "Danny Boy" (the CD's only ballad).

The recording quality is bright and clear with lots of "up front" presence. The rhythm section is very well recorded. Strangely, Dave Stahl's lead trumpet seems off-mike on some of the shout choruses, so that they never quite reach their full impact. The dynamic level of the band vaires little from chart to chart.

This enjoyable CD is recommended to big band fans who have an ear for be-bop and hot jazz soloists.

amazing amazing amazing.......2004-02-20

This is one of those typical stories. As amazing record from a new band from a very small contry (in mind and size)wich is Portugal.
This record is an absolut blast. So powerfull with amazing string and orchestral arrangements. So beautifull with extraordinary melodies and landscapes. So different from the rest. I know that Madredeus management and label just did everything to put this band out of the big scene. They were sucessfull. Shame on them.
But that means that V Imperio (and not Imperio alone) was the big event (as the french tv channel ARTE just pointed them as the band le plus en vue).
What a pitty world...

I can't see why this portuguese group hasn't been more famous. Their music is just absolutely amazing... a unique sound! The lyrics and the instruments gets us to the pass, reminds us of how powerfull we were... the fifth empire! The CD starts with O Castelo, a powerfull music that anyone can't ignore and several other musics wich have the sea and the Saudade as the main muse. To all the New Age fans... Don't miss it!!!

Swinging BeBop Big Band .......2005-12-14

Once again ace drummer Danny D'Imperio has put together a top group of New York area musicians to tackle some big band be-bop charts. Three of the tracks were actually recorded at the 2001 session which produced Big Band Bloviation Vol. 1, while five tracks come from a Nov. 2003 session.

Most of the comments I made in reviewing Volume 1 apply equally here, but if anything, this is an even more satisfying date. Perhaps the band felt more comfortable this time round; perhaps there is slightly more variety in charts and tempos chosen; perhaps it's the presence of tenor heavyweight Lew Tabakin as soloist on "Sweet Georgia Upside Down" and "Bill's Blues"; perhaps the sound and mix have been tweaked a bit; perhaps it's the presence of Bill Stapleton's superb chart on "Come Rain or Come Shine" featuring trumpeter Dennis Dotson, or John Fedchock's meaty chart on "Ceora", or Rob McConnell's chart on "Groovin' High". But whatever it is, overall this date scores slightly higher for me than Volume 1.

The other arrangers represented here are Phil Kelly, Tony Klatka, Mike Abene, and Jimmy Heath. All charts contain excellent and often extensive solo work by band members such as pianists Barry Harris and Sacha Perry, trumpeters Greg Gisbert, Chris Persad and Joe Magnarelli, baritonist Gary Smulyan, trombonist John Mosca, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, altoist Gary Pribeck and guitarist Peter Bernstein.

D'Imperio is a tasteful drummer who swings the band at every tempo and serves the music without drawing undue attention to himself. But the listener always knows who's in charge. D'Imperio's approach to big band drumming often reminds me of the master Mel Lewis.

Those who love swinging big band music in the bebop mainstream should not hestitate over this excellent, stimulating, and heart-warming session (or Vol. 1). Both will provide hours of listening pleasure.
