5 out of 5 stars Greg Nice and Smooth B always on point.......2007-05-17

A fantastic album from the early 90's, good melodic beats, tight rhymes and an unmistakable flow.

3 out of 5 stars Coulda went smoother...........2007-04-24

I was very excited when i found this Lp at my local record store since ive always been curious since i heard them featured on Gangstarr's Lp's.
I always liked the way they flowed but they just didnt bring it like i thought they would.

They just didnt stamp the Lp with any memorable songs or Anthems. Now dont write me off as some commercial, Top 40 doushe, because that couldnt be farther from the truth.I just dont think they lived up to bar they set for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Hip Hop Cd's of the 90's.......2007-01-22

The first time I heard Nice and Smooth's "Hip Hop Junkies" I was 13 and it was the hottest thing playing. A lot of people in mainstream America hadn't heard of Nice and Smooth. It wasn't like they were on MTV everyday (I don't recall ever seeing them in a video except for a song they did with Gang Starr a few years later). Anyway, "Hip Hop Junkies" is a terrific song, and when it came out the sounds were different from a lot of the other rap that people were listening to. At a time when most of the rap people were listening to in the street was gangsta-style rap, this song had a style that was pretty universal. The one thing about Nice and Smooth that I like is that they know how to come up with hooks. I see everybody here giving a lot of praise to a track called "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" but that song didn't catch on in my neighborhood (Jamaica, Queens-where such rappers as LL Cool J, Onyx, and 50 Cent came from). One song that I like from this album that didn't get the same attention as "Hip Hop Junkies" but which was also popular and which everyone thought was one of the best track in this CD is "How To Flow."

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2006-08-03

Though it is only 12 tracks, this is one of the best rap CDs I have ever heard. Both rappers have a great chemistry with each other on the mic, and the production is also great. You may have heard Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, and if you liked that song, then you will probably like the whole CD. Definately worth it for such a low price.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hip Hop.......2006-08-03

This whold CD is great. The best song may be the single "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow", but all of the songs are great. I love this CD and if you buy it, I know you will love it also.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars "Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-04-08

This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02

This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Texas music...........2006-10-24

Whether your in the mood for a nice slow love song (Must Have been Meant to Be) or a fantastic pick me up (Chicken Pluckin'), this cd has it all from a fantastically gifted Texas artist....Have been to only 2 of Jason's concerts but both were outstanding; great music from a great artist. I personally recommend this cd to any country music fan.....God bless, Marty

5 out of 5 stars New talent with a great voice and a big heart . . ........2005-06-19

Jason Allen is a Texas singer-songwriter with a great voice and a big heart - if this collection of songs is any indication, and I suspect it is. Like any Nashville hopeful, he includes some pop-country songs, mostly of the lovin' variety (love won, love lost) and a nostalgic remembrance of small-town boyhood ("Wouldn't It Be Nice") - they're smoothly, confidently done and belong on the charts.

But the really good stuff on the album are his tributes to a several musical traditions, from Cajun ("Make Up Your Mind") and Delta blues ("John Boat Blues") to honky-tonk ("Hold 'em Up") and a two-step dance tune that makes you want to jump up and grab a partner ("Costin' to Stay in Austin").

There's also a great Buck Owens style song ("Your Heart Turned Left") and a rip-roarin' guitar picking number ("Chicken Pluckin'") featuring virtuosos Randy Cornor and Redd Volkeart. Allen even finds room for some south-of-the-border drama with his "Devil's Destiny," about a murderous bull. At the last, he goes all the way back to his roots, singing and playing old-time gospel song duets with Wesley Sligar (who I gather from the notes is his dad-in-law).

A definite go. If you like country and enjoy new talent, you can't go wrong with this up-and-comer.

5 out of 5 stars Nice genre blend.......2004-05-20

Jason combines great vocals and guitar riffs across a rich diversity of sounds from Gospel, Blues, Country Ballard's, to classic Texas two-step. Jason retains his authentic Country/Western style on-display from this first album and doesn't sellout to the pop influence found on today's "Country" radio stations. A must-have for your Texas album collection.

The Great Julie London Seems Destined to Be 're-Discovered' Every Ten Years Or So, First in the 80's with 'Cry Me a River' and Then in the 90's with 'Fly Me to the Moon'- Here's Two New Reissuses of her Great Albums First Time Available on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quality music from a wonderful singer.......2004-05-09

The albums that make up this twofer are typical of Julie's music of the sixties. Dominated by lush ballads, the tempo occasionally picks up a little, but never to more than mid-tempo. Julie was brilliant at singing intimate ballads and wisely left the up-tempo party music to those with stronger voices.

The first of these two albums (End of the world) is filled mostly with well-known songs. Julie delivers excellent covers of such classics as End of the world, Call me irresponsible, Our day will come, I left my heart in San Francisco, Fly me to the moon, Days of wine and roses, I remember you, My coloring book, Chances are and Desafinado (slightly out of tune).

The songs on the second album (Nice girls don't stay for breakfast) are generally less famous but no less brilliant. Unlike the first album, the songs on this album date mainly from the twenties and thirties. Perhaps the most famous song here is When I grow too old to dream, originally a number one for Glen Gray in 1935. Elsewhere, there are covers of I've got a crush on you (Joe Sullivan, later a hit for Frank Sinatra), Everything I have is yours (Rudy Vallee), You made me love you (Al Jolson), I didn't know what time it was (Benny Goodman), Give a little whistle (Cliff Edwards - from Pinocchio), I surrender dear (Gus Arnheim), You go to my head (Larry Clinton with Bea Wain singing) and There will never be another you (Woody Herman).

This twofer is essential for Julie's fans.

3 out of 5 stars Love Julie London, but she is sabatoged by poor arrangements.......2002-03-22

Julie London was blessed with one of the lushest and most seductive voices I've heard. When everything is on target, her version of a song is tops. On this combination of two albums from the 1960's, Ms. London's singing is as warm and enticing as ever. Unfortunately the person or persons providing the backup arrangements did not serve her very well. Altogether there are 3 or 4 songs where everything really clicks. On the rest the background instrumentals sabatoge the spirit and mood of the song. So far my favorite Julie London CD is "Julie London Sings the Standards."

4 out of 5 stars London's steamiest set sizzles.......2000-11-16

This twofer presents the late Julie London at her breathiest best. Her steamy, smokey-throated takes on an eclectic mix of songs and arrangements is enjoyable listening. London manages to give the Jiminy Cricket ballad from Pinocchio, "Give A Little Whistle," a new meaning, and she stays in the Disney genre with an awkward rendition of the Mickey Mouse March. London is no Mouseketteer, especially when singing the title tune, "Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast." The first album, "The End of the World," finds London accompanied by a pulsating organ and background chorus that gives "Our Day Will Come" a hackneyed interpretation. But the choiciest tunes on this compilation are her jumpy "Fly Me to the Moon," "The Good Life" and "I Wanna Be Around."

Lushly arranged standards by the sultry vouced Julie London, both LP's are wonderful, together on one CD, on Nice Girls Don't stay For Breakfast there are some small group jazz sessions that are spectacular, particularly "I Surrender Dear" and "I've Got A Crush On You" show that Miss London was a jazz singer when she wanted to be. Comes highly recommended.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
    I'm fascinating.

    5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04

Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.

The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.

There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.

Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24

Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

    3 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

I have been hearing this song on U-Pop on XM radio and frankly it's got a great beat to it. Infectious actually. The girl sounds much older than she is. It's bubble gum pop, true, but worth a listen and you can decide for yourself.

    2 out of 5 stars She Really Doesn't Play Nice-by Joel.......2005-04-09

Firstly, she's one of the worst named artists ever:hear"Verbalicious''!How stupid!I think she said it exatly means ''verbally vicious'',to describe her type of music.Anyway, she hasn't any special skill in music, and it's not only this! She has a enervating voice.I just know it because I downloaded this song when I read about her first in Smash Hits.Don't spend even 3cents in this CD-single.She's another one of these artists that people will forget her appearance in 1 second.

Saw that she sings a bit rap and a bit pop-r'n'b???
