A sampling of a great dramatic tenor.......2006-07-06

Jon Vickers was indomitable, a tenor cut from larger-than-life materials with a huge, unique voice and rock-solid character. That could make him both demanding and difficult, but EMI caught him in a fantastic period when he matched forces with Karajan. The two drew the best from each other, and for once Vickers totally gave himself over to a great condcutor's guidance. As a result we have overwhelming accounts of Tristan and Otello, his two greatest roles. This double CD offers a generous sampling, but I can't imagine that listeners who don't know these recordings won't rush to buy the complete operas.

The Carmen sample is from an exciting recording with Grace Bumbry under Fruhbeck de Burgos. Here and in Samson and Delilah, Vickers' monumental approach sometimes crushes the delicacy of the music, but his fervent emotions more than carry the day (don't expect perfect French). The only work I am not enthusiastic about is the Winterreise. Vickers was committed to performing it, and the drak emotional range of Schubert's cycle suits his temperament, but his singing is too big-boned and operatic. Give it credit for good intentions. As for the rest, all of it is indispensable.

Caballe in a bel canto tour de force.......2004-10-17

Gemma di Vergy was one of Donizetti's more popular serious operas but has long since disappeared from the active repertoire. The liner notes to this Opera d'Oro release of a live performance reveal why: the title role is fearsome in its vocal demands, requiring mastery of a huge range, power in high notes and flexibility in coloratura. Caballe herself is quoted as saying she found singing one performance of the role more difficult than singing three Normas. There is a legendary Carnegie Hall performance of her singing Gemma with Eve Queler conducting; unfortunately, this recording of another performance catches her not at her very best. Afflicted by illness during this run of Gemmas, Caballe omits some high notes, and some of those that remain are decidely strained. If pressed to the wall one must admit that top vocal honors go to Renato Bruson, her co-star, who is in stunning voice and gets the loudest ovations from a notably unenthusiastic crowd. Still, there are enough of Caballe's trademark pianissimi, creamy tones and flexibility in coloratura to make this a worthwhile buy for fans of both the diva and Donizetti. The sound quality on this issue, alas, is at best fair, the balance in particular being unsatisfying--judging from the prominence of the orchestra and the distance of the voices, microphone placement was far from ideal.

The greatest Otello (despite the sound).......2005-09-25

You can get this Otello in the EMI studio version being reviewed here or as a live performance on Opera d'Oro, both almost identical in every detail musically. Vickers was the supreme Otello of his generation, with a huge, magnificent voice and heartbreaking pathos--he doesn't bluster or fake it emotionally for even a bar. His death scene is one of the great things in the Verdi canon on disc.

Freni is equally wonderful, exemplary in eveyr way musically and a prime example of how to act through the voice. Her Desdemona is ravishing and her last-act solos heartrending. The only weak member of the cast, unfortunatley, is the English bass-baritone Peter Glossop as Iago. (Karajan had a weak Iago on his famous Otello with Tebaldi and Del Monaco on Decca, too.) Glossop has dramatic force but no venom, and his wobbly voice isn't adequate to the role.

While we're mentioning negatives, the sound is very uneven and doctored with. That's typical of Karajan's EMI period because he tried to take over the producer's job and botched things--you'll never find one volume level that suits both the softest and loudest music.

Even so, these negatives can't override the enormous achievement this set represents--a classic Otello that will live a long, long time.
