Once En Vogue proved that old-fashioned gospel-soul female harmonies could create sparks with modern street beats, every record company went looking for young singers to hook up with new-jack-swing producers. Those efforts bear fruit with SWV, which stands for Sisters with Voices, and the three teenaged singers from New York really do have great pipes, capable of a distinctive sound that can dominate a production rather than the other way around. Cheryl "Coko" Gordon, the trio's lead singer, boasts a great range that allows her to sound tough and sultry in her gritty alto, and romantic and flirty in her trilling soprano. SWV's debut album includes 13 different songs, plus two alternate mixes, and the best tracks are the 10 written and produced by Brian Alexander Morgan, who knows how to create the melodies that all great harmonies must start with. The first single, "Right Here," features a very funky, push-and-pull rhythm track, but the three singers reclaim the song with harmonies that are very percussive themselves but with lots of melody and romantic personality as well. The single, "Weak," is a ballad that allows Gordon to confess her infatuated weakness without ever sounding like a weakling as she hits the beats confidently and purrs in anticipation. --Geoffrey Himes

Great Debut..........2007-03-22

This is a great start to SWV's career but their second album "New Beginning" was their best album to date. On this album they had a lot of smash hits like "Weak", I'm so Into You, "Downtown",and "Human Nature". They had a few uptempo songs that sounded good, but they exceled on their ballads "It's About Time" and "What I Need". All the SWV fans should have this album and SWV is working on some new material so look out for them.

"It's About Time" takes me back to my young days, as a pre-teen. I remember well, listening to tracks on this album, on our local R&B radio station. What made SWV stand out, as a trio, was their great ability to blend different voice types together. They all had lower voices, but Coco, in particular, demonstrated her command of her lovely alto range. This is heard especially on tracks like "I'm So Into You" (with the infectious hook, and catchy melody) and "Weak" (which was later covered by that teen pop star, JoJo---their version is FAR superior to hers, by leaps and bounds). My favorite cut is "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)." This combines a sample of "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson, with their lovely vocals.

These are the types of songs you put on, when you and your sweetie are getting together for a romanctic evening. Just turn the tracks on, pour the wine, and enjoy these Sisters With Voices. ......

This CD was amazing. I love every song, especially Mandy and 7:05, but also Year 3000 is a song that everyone in my whole family (my parents and my little brother age 6 and my little sis age 8) can all listen to in the car and sing along to. And until about a month ago, I wondered if they were truly as nice as they sound the CD. I went to the Easter Egg Roll at the White House and performed there. Not only did they sing live, but they play all there own instruments. Also, they stayed for hours after, taking pictures and signing autographs for everyone. Also they would just walk around and you could talk to them. This CD was wonderful and I would recommend this for all ages! GO JONAS BROTHERS! (though I e NICK THE BEST, he's the little 1)

My daughter wanted this soundtrack. I bought it and listened to it before she did. It was nice to give her a cd that she likes and have no restrictions on it..I actually liked one or two of their songs..However, very popular cd amazon gave me a great price but I had to wait almost 5 weeks for it

One Great Album.......2005-08-18

This is truly one of the best albums I have listened to in the last 6 mos--why it is not released in the US puzzles me. This is better than alot of the Black Crowes albums. Marc is a great guitarist-very original-and an excellent singer and song writer. Why doesn't he get any regonition? He should and I am waiting for his next release. I guess I will have to wait for the next Black Crowes release to hear from him again--I will definitely go to the next concert. GET THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miles Davis took the stage of New York's Fillmore East with five other players on March 7, 1970. Leaning heavily on the soon-to-be-released Bitches Brew and looking back no further than 1962's "Masqualero," they rumbled, squawled, and stomped through two sets that might have surprised even fans of Davis's new rock-influenced sound. At times edgier than even the challenging Brew, the music was nonstop, polyrhythmic, and crashing while remaining groove-oriented. With Miles blowing one aggressive solo after another, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Jack DeJohnette rise to the moment while providing reminders of the angular sound of the '60s trio. While "Bitches Brew" itself appears in a drastically shortened but still relatively hushed treatment, the first of two versions of "It's About That Time" breaks away from In a Silent Way's midtempo meditation into full-tilt tumult. These 90 minutes capture Miles headed in the direction of Jack Johnson, stopping to give the rock audience a glimpse of himself working at another peak. --Rickey Wright

Clarification Due.......2007-07-28

Firstly, this double cd IS scorching. The powers that be who didn't release this record for 31 years should be imprisoned for aural robbery.This is by far the best document of this band (including the grossman stuff) I think this is one of the farthest OUT playing Miles has just about ever done (along with the cellar door, agartha) For those reviewers on here who compare this set to Bitches Brew, you must understand this set is an entirely different beast. Bitches Brew was pieced together in the studio and the drumming is very different. Bitches Brew, while not being a "Live" take, had a much more patient feel to it. This music is set apart by Jack Dejohnette. He plays particularly loose on alot of the tracks and it makes the entire band float. Airto only adds to the polymetric, pulse driven energy music. For a while I was surprised at how incredibly loose the approach is, and on repeated listens it continues to gratify. Check out the DVD, Miles Daves:A Different Kind of Electric Blue (? title) on DVD for a set of this band at the Isle of White festival.

A furious barrage of free jazz and intense performances.......2006-09-07

This live March 7, 1970 release is burning hot and intense. Oddly enough, Miles was warming up for the Steve Miller Blues Band and Neil Young and the response from the audience is halfhearted and lukewarm. It seems likely that fans of the comparatively more straightforward material of those two bands were in no way shape or form prepared for this wild barrage of free jazz, jazz-rock, and unfettered experimentation. It's too bad too - this is easily the best set I have heard from this period of Miles (1969-1971) and reinforces in my mind the incalculable impact he had on music.

Alongside Miles (trumpet) is a virtual who's who of the jazz rock scene: Chick Corea (Fender Rhodes electric piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Dave Holland (electric bass guitar and acoustic bass); Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor saxophone); and Airto Moreira (percussion). These guys are all top shelf musicians and turn in some of the most "out there" performances I have ever heard. Chick Corea is especially wild and simply tears the electric piano up - the furious, free-form barrage with Dave Holland during the first set is simply unbelievable. Speaking of the bassist, I happen to like Dave Holland quite a lot - a lot more in fact than Motown bassist Mike Henderson (who played on the Live Evil album, 1971). Dave is a technically superior player and he truly interacts with the other players rather than just laying down an ostinato. Jack DeJohnette is also in top form and churns out a swirling mass of impenetrably dense rhythms, while Wayne Shorter cuts loose with furious torrents of notes that recall free jazzer Eric Dolphy at his most intense. Whew. Let us just say that the performances on this live recording are hot.

Tracks 1-4 comprise a 42 minute jam that holds your attention all the way through, while the second set provides more of the same. Musically, the pieces incorporate elements of free jazz, although some influences taken from James Brown and other soul/funk musicians can be heard as well - even though they really take a back seat to the free jazz and experimental jazz rock.

If you enjoyed this live album, you might also like Bitches Brew (1970); Live Evil (1971); A Tribute to Jack Johnson (1971); and On the Corner (1972). This is all simply amazing stuff and Miles was an extremely forward thinking musician. Very highly recommended.

The Lost Quintet Live - The Power & Dynamic is just AWESOME!.......2006-09-03

The playing on these two discs is masterful and intense. The Fillmore audience full of stoned teens and college students must have been taken aback by this sonic assault. There's some polite applause here and there but they must have been wondering "WTF was that?"

Holland and DeJohnette provide a punishing, pulsing, swinging foundation to the other players to improvise upon - Shorter and Miles go wild. As usual, I am not wild about Corea's distorted electric Fender Rhodes with that Ring Modulator gadget (not a particular good effect in my opinion but it must have been "trippy" at the time), but his playing is fabulous. I will say this disc is probably only for the die-hard Electric Miles collector. Some listeners are going to hate it because there's a lot of "free jazz" (in the Ornette Coleman sense of the expression) going on in here and the cacauphony will be a bit overwhelming at times. This is not a collection I can listen to at any ol' time and it certainly isn't "background music", but I am glad I purchased it.

Just because you like Bitches Brew, Big Fun, Jack Johnson, and On the Corner doesn't mean you are going to like this. The playing is very hot but it's also very free form in places. Some of it even reminds me of Holland and Corea's Circle - The Paris Concert with Anthony Braxton. Fidelity is a little muddy for bass and drums but don't let that put you off. Apparently, according to the Cellar Door Sessions booklet, the engineers were still trying to figure out how to record this band with this concert took place.

Miles Moves Forward.......2006-08-30

Miles Davis' 1969-1970 performances, which saw - or rather heard - the trumpeter fusing the eerily open-ended logic of BITCHES BREW with the screaming stagecraft of the then-burgeoning arena rock scene, represent one of the most exciting links in the solid gold chain of breakthroughs which was his singularly stellar career. Long unavailable in the US, these shows have hit the shelves in a big way over the past nine years as Columbia Records continues its hell-for-leather efforts to get every note Miles ever recorded for the label out to the public. Happily, IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME, like other releases from the same era, more than justifies such a policy.
With saxophonist Wayne Shorter here playing his final gig with Miles, TIME could easily get by on historic importance alone. But riding atop one of Davis' - indeed, one of jazz's - greatest rhythm sections (Chick Corea on electric piano and assorted bizarre circuitry, Dave Holland on bass guitar and Jack DeJohnette on drums and on fire), the two great blowers and composers are given no chance to rest on their laurels. Tunes from BREW and IN A SILENT WAY here coalesce into forty-five-minute suites of crashing, keening, thundering improvisational elan and fearlessly forward momentum. Whether this sort of thing is your cup of tea or not, it's impossible to dismiss; few if any acts in either the jazz or rock sphere could have offered a more powerful concert experience than this in what must surely rank as the absolute peak period for live music of any sort. Never once sinking into either the safety of convention or the lethargy of chaos, this version of the Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet was and remains a formidable unit.
And IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME is a formidable pair of discs. Whether it's the best way to hear Miles and Company at this juncture, however, is rather hard to say. I'd actually call the long-deleted Japan-only release 1969 MILES, recorded in Antibes a month before BITCHES BREW itself, a somewhat more interesting document, as it applies the scorched-earth logic of this band to a broader cross-section of Davis' repertoire, including such pre-electric classics as "'Round Midnight" and "Footprints." By the same token, Shorter's departure, regrettable as it may have been, didn't prevent his bandmates from continuing to jell and explore, with the result that BLACK BEAUTY, recorded a month after this set with Steve Grossman on soprano sax, seems to my ears to achieve the impossible by reaching an even more torrential level of intensity, if only in a few spots.
Nevertheless, with no other recording of this particular combo tackling this particular program currently available, IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME meets five-star criteria for both the sound and significance of its content. Miles forever!

A Smokin' Performance.......2006-06-08

There are numerous official and bootleg albums dating from the early electric phase of Miles Davis. But It's About That Time is the best that is currently available. The material features a band operating loud and proud, with the solos by Davis and Shorter nothing short of brilliant.

Looking back more than 35 years later, one can easily hear why jazz fans/critics were critical of Davis (in actuality, what else was new) while he took "fusion" into major rock venues, while opening for popular rock acts of the time.

The music is as thrilling to hear today as it certainly was live in 1970. The CD is an essential part of a collector's library who wants to hear Davis and his band tearing it up and get a real understanding in what fusion meant at its inception.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

While her vocals are great (and very reminiscent of a blend of Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan) and I did expect a collection of songs from the heart of a parent, I was disappointed to find language that would require a bar of soap in a household of children. I can't play this when my kids are around! What's the point in that?

A truly gifted artist who has an unbelievable voice.......2006-01-30

I discovered Kath Fisher on itunes and fell in love with her album "One". Her voice is truly her instrument, so controlled and multi-layered, soulful and capable of long notes and belts. She has a good range, with shades of Tori, Alanis, but with a deep tone that makes her truly unique. Her lyrics are cool, with an enunciation that makes them understandable. Her tunes are catchy, but not your typical radio pop, though I have heard her on San Diego radio. Standouts include "I will love you" on ONE; I love "Beautiful Life" which you may recognize from the Toyota commerical; and "The Lovely Years" from the new album of the same name. I actually have all of her albums, and all songs are just great. UPPERS AND DOWNERS is an album of 1/2 quick tempo songs and 1/2 slower songs, with lots of covers, including a cool version of "Dream On". If you are looking for a great, but for some reason undiscovered in the mainstream true talent, you can't go wrong with Fisher. Why isn't this girl famous?

I love Fisher's music, and bought this the day it came out. The music is good, but I was a little disappointed that the theme for the album was about how wonderful it is to be parents. Not that babies aren't wonderful, they are, but if you aren't a new parent you may not relate well to this album and True North would be a better pick.

her voice is as lush and memorable as ever, and the music and arrangements are even better than on previous works.

Do you remember Christina Milian? Probably not. In 2001, the former junior journalist for the Disney Channel landed a single called "AM to PM" on the charts. It fared moderately well, while the album it came from did not. Three years later, Milian returns in her early twenties and marks the occasion with a clever and ubiquitous slice of high-class raunch called "Dip It Low." This turns out to be the biggest -- but not only -- highlight of her second album. It falls somewhere between Beyoncé's Dangerously in Love and Jennifer Lopez' This Is Me... Then in sound and scope, and yet it isn't quite as remarkable as either. Bloodshy & Avant, the two primary producers who reprise their roles from Milian's first album, hand the singer at least three other songs that have the potential to be played on radio and television with at least half as much frequency as the lead single. This should push her well beyond one-smash-and-out status. The club tracks work best and easily outrank the slower songs. Despite the album's handful of bright spots, Milian will need to be more convincing during the ballads next time out in order to be considered a true force.

I must say that after hearing Christina's UK only album i had my doubts that i would ever be a huge christina fan. I mean her 1st album was good but nothing great. This time around its a different story. Her new cd is much more up beat with fairly catchy hooks. Even the beats are pretty good. L.O.V.E. and Get Lose are really good songs. I Need More is interesting. This cd is MUCH better than her new one Ao Amazin'. Pick it up and hear it for yourself

After listening to 'Dip It Low,' you would figure that this would be a good dance Pop/R&B album. You would be horribly wrong. The album lacks everything, from depth and melody, to organization and reason. Though not so great, there are a few good songs that stand out.

It's About Time - actually 2.5 stars.......2006-05-23

I was curious to hear this entire disc because other than the single, DIP IT LOW, the only thing I'd heard about Christina Milian was in the acting realm. After listening to it for a few times, I'd rank her vocal ability against Mya, Ashanti, J Lo, Ciara, Rhianna, etc. The one thing that all of them have in common is that they're attractive females with limited vocal skills.

In comparison to Mya & Ashanti's last releases, Ms. Milian just didn't take enough chances with the disc so in a few of the songs her voice sounds almost exactly like Jennifer Lopez but not as strident as J Lo's voice. Christina has a sweet, gentle quality to her voice which lends itself well to the ballads but sometimes gets lost in the more beat oriented dance tracks.

The tracks that I really liked are: DIP IT LOW, SOMEDAY ONE DAY, I NEED MORE (reminds me of old school Janet Jackson), MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY, HIGHWAY, GET LOOSE (very J Lo-esque) & PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY.

I'd recommend it to those who like "hip pop" and have enjoyed discs by any of the females mentioned above. It's a disc that definitely keeps up with others released in this genre of music but is not groundbreaking in any way - her vocals are not distinctive enough to distinguish her disc from the others and truthfully the only two songs that made a real impression on me were DIP LOW AND PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY so if you can download those two that may be your best bet.

Not a Bad Album in the Least.......2006-05-20

IT'S ABOUT TIME isn't the first release by Christina Milian, but it is the first release to get some attention. During the release of this album you couldn't miss ubiquitous first single "Dip It Low" on TV or on radio. What is unfortunate is, despite the nearly gold sales of this album, it still was under recognized compared to Milian's rivals including Britney Spears, J. Lo, Beyonce, and etc... IT'S ABOUT TIME isn't the second coming where pop music or music is concerned, but it isn't a bad album in the least.

Milian's follow-up to IT'S ABOUT TIME (SO AMAZIN') is a much more urban-driven album compared to this. Here, Milian deals with her pop leanings, evidence by "Dip It Low". While "Dip It Low" is the standout from this album, there are other very capable singles including the incredibly fun "I Need More" and "Whatever U Want". Then later on, Milian slows the pace down with the enjoyable mid-tempo ballad "I'm Sorry". However, Milian isn't particularly consistent with hits and filler material as there is extraordinary material next to average material.

A boost for IT'S ABOUT TIME is the production. Like most dance-pop divas, Milian's voice isn't particularly full, but thin. The production highlights her voice to make her sound very credible as vocalist. Also compared to her R&B counterparts (i.e. Ashanti, etc...) she isn't nearly as modest where vocal nuance and melisma are concerned. It is no surprise this album received a Grammy nomination, however it is certainly not extraodinary in anyway. It is a nice dance-pop set, but it isn't truly innovative in any sense. Nobody can deny how great "Dip It Low" is/was though. 3 Stars.

A Terrific Album.......2007-04-15

If you are not familiar with Paulette's voice think a less melancholy Tammy Wynette (one of my favorites). Paulette's work with Highway 101 is well documented but she has some wonderful guest appearances, especially on The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Circle II.
The first number on the album, I Knew a Good Thing When I Had It, should be a major country hit. Lively and very catchy you have a hard time getting this song out of your head. That Old Glass Case is a really good song about a family heirloom. He's Funny That Way and Twenty Years Ago are two more fine numbers that like all of Paulette's tunes has hooks that grab you and have you singing along. It's About Time Now is a high energy tune with good use of the fiddle that will start your foot tapping and before you know it you will be dancing to this one.
I saved Thank You Vets for last, although every song is very good this one is extremely moving for me, a Viet Nam Vet. Paulette's brother Gary is a Nam Vet and the lyrics on this song come straight from her heart. She tells all Nam Vets that she appreciates them and the country now appreciates them even though it is late in coming from our country...better lat than never I say. The song has a great melody and has the hooks she is known for but there is a lot of power in this number and the heartfelt lyrics. It is the song that brought Paulette out of retirement and we are the beneficiary of that decision. Paulette dedicates this album to all Viet Nam Vets. Buy the CD, you won't be disappointed, even if you are not a country fan.
Here is hoping this very talented and caring lady continues to record. If she plays in your area do yourself a favor and catch her live.

Finally Paulette has given us a new CD. With 10 original songs, she has written precious stones to share with all who listen. No one writes more personal and meaningful songs then Paulette has on this CD. Besides songs such as The Old Glass Case and He's Funny That Way. She has,written a song for the Vietnam vets. Where have the other writers been on this subject. Easily showing she can express any feelings she has, even on a subject to difficult for most to tackle.

Once again if this isn't enough, she shows us no one can actually sing their songs with the emotion and energy that she gives to every line. No wonder Highway 101 was the most popular group of its day.

Carlson's Timely Return Warrants A Well-Deserved Homecoming.......2006-06-27

Prime Cuts: Only in Your Dreams, He's Funny That Way, That Old Glass Case

It's about time for her return -- after a 9 year hiatus, where she has chosen the venerable prerogative of raising a family -- Paulette Carlson's finally back. Vocally this petite blonde is still packed with emotions when she croons a ballad and when she rocks she still can cause barns to be ablazed. And, despite the fact that country music has gone through transformational maelstroms led by the assault of pop and rap that shook its identity at its core, Carlson's new CD still comes across as if time has not changed. With a throwback to the days when she was heading the multiple-number-one group Highway 101, "It's About Time" still relies on those wonderful rustic rudiments such as steel guitars, fiddles and piano to parlay these newly recorded 12 paeans. However, with "It's About Time," Carlson makes two departures. Instead of relying on the scribes at Music Row, Carlson has penned 10 out of the 12 cuts. Further, she has chosen to helm the album by herself, a fleet she has had never done before.

Most ambitious among this oeuvre is the heart wrenching ballad "That Old Glass Case," a story song that finds echoes with Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors." Here Carlson waxes nostalgia about her deceased parents incurred via an old glass case, a priced family heirloom. Though it is easy to give in the tooth-decaying mawkishness on such songs, but Carlson redeems this track with the way she caresses each note with care dripped with emotions. Also, in the inspirational mode is "Rejoice for the Moment," a ode to carpe diem in the lyrically alley of Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying," though it lacks the urgency of McGraw's hit. And when inspiration turns to patriotism, a couple is represented here: lead single "Thank You Vets" is a slice of personal tribute Carlson wrote in remembrance of her brother who died in the Vietnam War. Though the sentiments are to be commended, but the marching drums sounds trite; a simpler backing would be more effective. While "She Rides for the Brand" offers a graphic narrative perspective of the agonizing toil of war on the families of the vets.

Lest one gets the impression that this is an inspirational CD, the songs that deal with romance abound. The choice cut here being the exhilaratingly upbeat "He's Funny That Way" where Carlson provides a litany of why her man is indispensable. Surrounding herself with a wall of wailing fiddles, Carlson bears her heart on the hurt-drenched "Only in My Dreams," this is stuff the heart is proud of. "Twenty Years Ago" and "My Love is in America" are the only non-Carlson penned tracks. Of which, the former was a Kenny Rogers' hit which Carlson's version strips this ballad from Rogers' 80s pop synth-feel. But the latter, "My Love is in America," is a offbeat ballad that suffers too much from some unfortunate chord progressions thus diffusing the melody as a result.

Though Carlson's return is much anticipated, there is a feeling that such a return was a little rushed as far as the song selection of the CD is concerned. There's nothing that really jumps out that spells "hit" all over. Neither is there an entry that will etch into the listener's conscience the way "(Do You Love Me) Just Say Yes" or "I'll Start With You" had on listeners those years ago. Nevertheless, there are enough good tunes to warrant one's listening time. In short, this is a timely return that deserves one's endorsement.

It sure is about time!!.......2006-06-21

Finally..a new cd from the voice of Highway 101, Ms Paulette Carlson. Coming out of 'retirement', this cd was released last year (albeit with different cover art) and has been available on her official website. Anyone who likes Paulette or Highway 101 will want to buy this cd anyway but you wont be dissapointed. Every track is a gem and her voice sounds as beautiful as ever. Simple country songs of love and loss (I knew a good thing... ,I wish you wouldent stand.. & Only in your dreams) along with heartfelt nostalgia (That old glass case & Twenty years ago)and 'traditional' songs (My love is in America & Rejoice for the moment). Also featured are 'Americana' songs, "She rides for the brand", "Its about time" and the reason for Ms Carlson returning to the spotlight - "Thank you Vets" are all really accessable. As a 35 year old guy from England I really have no real knowledge/conection to the Vietnam war. Despite this I was actually very moved by the heartfelt sincerity of the lyrics and the emotion in her voice in "Thank You Vets". Paulette has once again shone through with her songwriting and has written all but 2 tracks. This is certainly a welcome return and hope this to be the first of many more cds we can expect to get from this wonderful and very talented lady!!

This is such an amazing CD. I've been a big fan of Kenny Loggins for over 30 years now, ever since he was teaming up with Jim Messina. Every time I pick up one of his CD's, I find myself comparing it to the previous ones - and this was the mistake that I made with "It's About Time." It was tough to get the other ones out of my head (how could anyone top the incredible "Leap of Faith" or the amazing "The Unimaginable Life")? Well, this album stands in a class by itself.

When I first played it, I only cared for one or two of the songs. But I had to keep playing it until I really "got" the message behind the songs and appreciated them by themselves. In other words, I had to forget about the previous albums completely and focus on this one. I had had enough experience and faith in Kenny Loggin's music to really give this one a try. Now, after listening to it at least once a day for the past 2 weeks, I can honestly say that it's one of Kenny's best albums ever! He has consistently demonstrated a real commitment to creating and producing quality music for almost 4 decades. Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD. Forget about his previous efforts and simply enjoy this one by itself; it will not disappoint you.

... reviews of Kenny Loggins's new album are written by Kenny Loggins fans. The man's musical life spans three decades. Who *doesn't* appreciate at least one Kenny Loggins song from that long, storied career? No, this album is not "Leap of Faith" or "The Unimaginable Life." Those albums were very consistent in tone and feel, comprehensive chronicles of a man's particular place in his life at a particular time. On "It's About Time," Loggins lets loose, collaborating with Michael McDonald (a long-overdue reunion), Richard Marx and Clint Black. I'm not much of a fan of country music, generally (it's just not my thing), but as someone who appreciates music in general, I can admire the songwriting and, more importantly, the fun that was had in making "Alive 'N' Kickin'." This album showcases Loggins's outstanding voice (the man can sing a falsetto way better than I'll ever be able to) in a number of styles, proving, once again, his range and artistry as a singer. There's almost a childlike quality to this album in its variety, as if he was working on the collection and followed his curiosity where it led him: "Ooh, it might be fun to do a country tune" one minute then "Haven't done much rock lately, let's do some of that" the next, with several of his amazing ballads tossed in because fans love them. Kenny Loggins has nothing to prove at this point. He's a legendary musician who makes music because he loves it, which is abundantly evident when he brings this album on the road. And, unlike many performers, he brings with him a palpable sense of gratitude to his fans who have given him the chance to live -- and thrive -- in a musical world.

I do not have many Kenny Loggins CD's. I bought the "Essentials" CD's and then found out about this one. I am really enjoying this CD. The songs "fit" into my playlists whether I am playing only Kenny Loggins music or playing other Artists as well. It is always good when I can mesh the music with my mood. So far I have been able to pull out this CD and find something that matched. I would have liked a few more songs.

Stop Pretending was better.......2003-12-14

I discovered the Pandoras back when they first were around in the 80's and was a big fan of their garage-y sound. Like the punk of that time, it was a refreshing, grungey change from the slick techno rock of the day. There are a couple throwaway tunes on this cd but the really good ones make it worth the purchase. However in the end, Stop Pretending, their second album after Paula ditched this band and replaced them with all new, and in my opinion, better musicians was a FAR superior recording. If you can find the vinyl or tape of Stop Pretending, it's a wiser investment but if not, this one still rocks.

These girls were terrible. I saw them in LA circa 1985. Paula could'nt carry a tune let alone tune her guitar. And for the rest of the band, they reminded me of Danny Partridge. Their instruments were just to big for them.

I first heard the Pandoras while I was playing in my first band in Ann Arbor, MI in the mid-1980s. I was about 14 or 15 at the time, and I thought then and still think now that they were ...great. I had read an article in some magazine about a band called Frightwig, and the writer compared them to the Pandoras. Well, Frightwig were alright, but the Pandoras were exactly what I was looking for... Probably because I was in love with Ronnie Spector as a little boy & then became a punk rocker... Amy Surdu from the Gore Gore Girls wishes she was as cool as the Pandoras, and the GGGs are alright too... Dimestore Liam

***Note: Sorry if this review seems slightly disjointed, it was censored... oops, I mean "edited". Apparently my rebuttal of a comment someone else made in an (uncensored) earlier review was deemed obscene. I will now try to restate the gist of what was removed in hopefully less objectionable language: For those of you who know what I am referring to, what Paula Pierce did onstage was something that many others have done both before and after her. Also, I think there is a slight taint of misogyny to any criticism of her in that regard, since men, from Jim Morrison in the 1960s all the way down to myself during the 80s and early 90s (and lots... probably hundreds... of others, both successful like Morrison and unsuccessful like me, in between), have done essentially the same thing and mostly escaped the type of criticism leveled against the late Ms. Pierce. Also, to clarify further, I meant no disrespect to the Gore Gore Girls in comparing them to the Pandoras- notwithstanding Amy Surdu's questionable (not to mention unprofessional) personnel management, she has become a quite good guitarist & vocalist. If she learns how to quit screwing people around and be a good bandleader, she might be as cool as Paula Pierce someday.

Not a great cd. The songs from Stop Pretending are mostly hers and was the real deal for fans of Paula's "more snot per square inch" approach. Her metal period is largely unlistenable except for her power ballad attempt,"close behind". The moxie ep is actually better than this full length job,(sorry greg shaw. But your "You Don't Satisfy" single made up for this weak performance weak choice selections for "It's about Time" For a brief couple years nobody burned brighter than Paula's beauty, youth, and talent. I loved her in '86 and still love her. The internet has more hits for her now than when Pandoras played live. Paula launched the following bands out of her enthusiasm for live rock 'n roll: feline, mad monster party, rebel pebbles, the screamin sirens, muffs... these founding members got their start with Paula, and yes mainly because they "looked right" not because of dazzlingly wonderful chops.

I saw this band several times in the 80's. They weren't very good. In fact, they were downright awful. But they had a huge following. Do you know why? Because Paula would show her ... and let all the young boys in the front stare up her mini skirt. They were more like a bad burlesque show than a Rock n Roll show. As for the records..............Well first and foremost: Paula ... her songs. If you listen to any Nuggets or Pebbles collections you'll find that she rewrote lyrics to most of those tunes and claimed them for her own. And second: the band couldn't play their instruments. They try, but to no avail. There were a lot of better bands from that 'Battle of the Garages' or 'Paisley Underground' period of the mid 1980's that should be selling here at Amazon. The Miracle Workers, The Things, just to name a few. As for this record, I can't recommend it. For nostalgia or curiosity maybe, but I really can't support thievery. And that's what this is. Plain and simple ...
