There will likely be lots of scoffing at Marc Anthony's interpretation--both on disc and onscreen--of late salsa singer Hector Lavoe. But let's not forget that Anthony is a salsa superstar in his own right. He has anchored some of the genre's most thrilling moments and has taken salsa to audiences not normally exposed to the sweltering sound. The El Cantante soundtrack is a solid effort, notable for Anthony's dedication to recreating Lavoe's distinct delivery and phrasing. He puts aside his own emotive stylings for a more subdued performance on several tracks, including the celebratory "Mi Gente" and the mournful "Escandalo." Anthony is virtually unrecognizable during "Che Che Cole," "Quitate," and the standout "Que Lio," which makes the project all the more intriguing. Jennifer Lopez, Anthony's wife in real life and onscreen in El Cantante, croons pensive closing ballad "Toma de Mi." Even without the film, the soundtrack stands as an earnest homage to a tragic icon. --Joey Guerra

FANTASTIC CD, MARC ROCKS. THE MOVIE IS GREAT JLO AND MARC DID AN AWESOME JOB. TOO BAD THE CRITICS BASHED THE MOVIE. THE OPENING OF THE MOVIE WILL BRING CHILLS UP AND DOWN YOUR BACK.

4 out of 5 stars Buena Banda Sonora De La Pelicula.......2007-08-04

When I heard this album, I expected for Marc Anthony to adapt to Hector Lavoe's style to interpret the songs, not just imitate his voice (UJUM!, Van Lester)!!! and anyone else that can a buck only as a Hector Lavoe imitator or Hector Lavoe "covers" orquestras. And I think Marc Anthony accomplished that without using completely his vocal range. Remember, Hector Lavoe was not known for that, but more the way he spills his emotions and interacts with his public with his phrases on stage. The songs chosen are some of the obvious popular tunes, some that are not really the most popular tunes from his catalog. I guess that might depend where you lived in that era, PR, NYC, South America, the favorites vary slightly by market or area. I have not seen the movie yet, but I imagine the reason these songs were chosen for this sountrack is because it fit the best with the "movie's standpoint" of Hector Lavoe's live. You can't compare salsa quality from the Fania era, that is something that is locked and treasured, but I think for 2007 this album is done musically very good. It's a well done album with a great musical quality in today's standards, (stop comparing with the Fania era, that was the sacred time golden age of salsa and is never coming back). I recommend highly this album. The main reason I gave this album four stars is the last song, by Jennifer Lopez, it is very out of place from the other songs

3 out of 5 stars *** Great Songs Re-Made... Not Quite the Same! ***.......2007-08-04

Let me start by saying that I am one of those hardcore Hector Lavoe fanatics that gets up to dance every time any one of Lavoe's songs starts playing - be it in a restaurant, a nightclub, "la calle", you name it...

Hector Lavoe had an undeniable talent captivating the audiences with not only his voice, but his personal style back in the 70's and early 80's... Let's face it, there will never be music like Lavoe's (which is also true for all the other big "Salsa Gorda" Soneros - e.g. Tito Rodriguez, Ismael Rivera, Tito Puente, just to mention a few) - Even though I believe Mark Anthony did a great job acting in Hector's capacity (I realized this after seeing the film), Hector's music is still unparalleled today and always will be (which should not be unexpected). Objectively speaking, these songs make more sense in the movie than they do when put together as a standalone compact-disc. For my everyday listening and dancing leisure, I would much rather enjoy the unadulterated Lavoe's originals (which I do not think is particularly unexpected).

What I really expected from Mark Anthony was for him to incorporate some of his own flavor into this production. Mark Anthony is gifted in his own ways, and he should have allowed for this album to stand-out by being a little bit more like himself. Should he have done this, we would have ended up with one of the best salsa CD's ever - After all, this was a great opportunity for Mark to interpret, and not just imitate, during the remaking of some of yesterday's most-treasured salsa classics while concurrently allowing himself to reach today's "newer" salsa crowds... And as far as us consumers go - Why buy a less-than-perfect replica, when you can listen to the crème de la crème - which has stood the test of time?

Overall, this CD lacks originality and since Mark's intentions were to mirror Lavoe verbatim, I should write my evaluation with that in mind... And no, there is no Mark Lavoe.

5 out of 5 stars Some extremely HOT music........2007-08-01

One song in particular "AQUANILE" is really hot, hot, hot. If you don't want to get up and dance to this, you must be dead.

3 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack...up until track 10!.......2007-07-30

I really was enjoying this CD! 9 tracks of 70's style Salsa (something I grew up listening to) done with new arrangements and STELLAR vocals by the swesome Marc Anthony...

...up until track 10! I really, REALLY wish hubby Marc would be honest with Jen and tell her SHE CAN'T SING! A well written song with a HORRIBLE singer, brings this CD down from 5 stars to a 3! Talk about buzz kill.

A high recommend, if you can somehow edit out the 10th track.

El Cantante - The Originals - Hector Lavoe

Héctor Lavoe continues to be the source of tributes, covers, drama, and films. This collection of carefully remastered original songs affirms that the attention is well deserved. It features some of the classic hits he recorded together with Willie Colon. The influence of Lavoe will continue to be felt in the Latin music world, but nothing beats listening to this remastered original.

Those who like Hector Lavoe will enjoy this cd. Although the quality is not excellent (I heard the original LP in one of my neighbor's sound system and liked the sound and was amazed by the coda of Periodico de Ayer, an almost classical part at the end of the song with violins which lamentably is not included in this CD.)
I also like Dia de Suerte. How the chorus begins at "destiempo"... had not noticed it? uhmm.

Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Great spin on contemporary tunes Don't buy the itunes version!.......2007-07-29

If you are going to buy this, make sure you buy on amazon! The itunes version doesn't include all the songs the CD version does.

Buena Vista has done it again. Cold play's and the Jack Johnson tune's are my favorite. The best tracks are the ones where the artist gave the group all the masters separated by tracks allowing these guy to really do their magic. Some songs seem like they just grabed the original version of the song and pasted a Latin rythem on top.

3 out of 5 stars Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15

It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose

5 out of 5 stars Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

4 out of 5 stars Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

Marc Anthony comes on like a suave, less jumpy alternative to Ricky Martin on this mostly English-language album. Having already introduced itself to the pop mainstream with the salsa-tinged single "I Need to Know," Marc Anthony offers several other obvious crossover hits, ranging from the Rodney Jerkins-produced Latin-funk fusion of "She's Been Good to Me" to the lovelorn midtempo ballad "When I Dream at Night." However, Anthony's agreeably keening voice is too often applied to the sort of colorless adult-contemporary material typical of Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey mainstay Walter Afansieff, who produces or coproduces three tracks here. The result is often more interesting in sociological terms--Anthony fans who, like the star, were born to Latino parents in America are as sure to eat this disc up as his new Caucasian admirers--than in musical ones. Ain't that America? --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars When you purchase from a Junk Dealer.......2007-05-15

The CD arrived in a torn brown bag, loosely taped on the outside - upon opening the brown wrapper I was surprised to find the case taped together -upon opening the broken case, I found a CD that has some kind of dried food or milk product on one side and the recorded side was scratched heavily. This is truly a junk dealer to send something in this deplorable condition. There are really no words to describe my thoughts when I opened this CD. I just hope I did not catch something by opening this nasty package.

5 out of 5 stars Marc Anthony.......2007-04-02

I really like the way that Marc Anthony's musical crew assembles the instruments in his songs. Marc Anthony has a dynamic voice but I loved the way those instruments play in harmony. This cd has a blend of different rythms and the lyrics are in english which allows english speaking people to enjoy and understand the meaning of Marc Anthony's songs. I have just about every Marc Anthony cd. And even though I may have a favorite song there is not a cd album I do not like. He is an artist through and through.

The joyous collection will likely incite a full-scale house party, complete with flowy dresses, sparkly jewelry, and silky, unbuttoned shirts. The disc plays like an actual live performance, a tight mix of passion and precision. Bandleader Oscar Hernandez even introduces the entire outfit on the opening track. Horns blare, percussion pulses, and a voice of choruses guides several numbers. If nothing else, take a listen to the trio of "Sacala Bailar," "Ahora Si," and "Que Bonito," which comes midway through the disc, for an idea of SHO's sparkling seamlessness. "Danzon For My Father" is a touching instrumental tribute, and the bilingual "Late in the Evening-Tarde en la Noche" features an inspired guest spot by Paul Simon, who matches the group's swelling enthusiasm. Swing does just that--and so much more. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars You have no option but to dance.......2007-05-23

Since their arrival in 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO) has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernández, the thirteen-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide. United We Swing, SHO's third album, is a stunning follow-up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album Across 110th St., and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut, Un Gran Día En El Barrio.

On United We Swing, Spanish Harlem Orchestra continues in the same classic-meets-contemporary sound, but with refreshing originality. Nine of the songs are original compositions grounded in the unique identity the band has forged based on the musical legacy of El Barrio, a pulsating Eastside community in NYC located to the south of 125th St that gave rise to Boogaloo, Latin Soul, and Salsa.

La Llave De Mi Corazon finds tropical music troubadour Juan Luis Guerra returning to the secular sounds that have made him an enduring, endearing performer. His last disc, 2004's Para Ti, was a cautiously received--if still joyous--collection of spiritual tunes. La Llave De Mi Corazon centers on romance and love, themes that better suit Guerra's blend of salsa, merengue and other assorted tropical rhythms. The cutesy title track is featured in English and in Spanish, though it's doubtful Guerra will engage in any serious crossover work anytime soon. Better is "Something Good," a silky, simmering duet with smoky-voiced Chiara Civello. Guerra's own rich, expressive delivery is always a treat. He's emotive without oversinging, particularly during the lilting "A La Vera" and "Solo Tengo Ojos Para Ti." Standout "Si Tu No Bailas Conmigo" is a simple, gorgeous ode to amor that soars on glittering imagery and a gently shuffling beat. "If you don't dance with me, I prefer not to dance," Guerra confesses to a lover. It's an irresistible invitation. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars El mejor album latino del 2007.......2007-07-18

Quien no recuerda "Bachata Rosa", "Si Tu Te Vas" o "Mi PC"?

In my opinion, said song is Hector's all-time best vocal performance--so much so, in fact, that I'd say it was nothing short of shameful that it wasn't issued as a single. "El Todopoderoso", "Rompe Saraguey" and "Mi Gente" were the big hits --which deservedly became classics--but "Tus Ojos" remains beautiful beyond compare.

5 out of 5 stars Lavoe's first solo album!!!.......2006-06-09

Here is the remastered edition of Hector Lavoe's first album. This edition includes the original cover art and an essay. It does sound much better than the previous Fania edition and it's cheaper too!
Produced by Willie Colon and featuring Mark Dimond on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales and Ray Maldonado on trumpet, this is a New York salsa classic (1975)from beginning to end. No weak or filler tunes here.

Album Description

A mixture of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz style come together on Latin Jazz, a lively collection of songs by masters of the genre.

The artists featured on Latin Jazz represent an honored cast of musicians ranging from early pioneers of the genre to those who have helped it remain a viable force for more than 60 years. Machito, a contemporary of Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington, was a pioneering bandleader who helped deepen the bond between Afro-Cuban music and American jazz. His classic track "Congo Mulence" opens the album and features fellow jazz legend Cannonball Adderley. Other legendary figures on the album include Tito Puente, whose mastery of the timbales combined with old-fashioned showmanship kept his music fresh and relevant over the years, and Eddie Palmieri, whose piano techniques put him in the same league as jazz legends Thelonious Monk and McCoy Tyner. He teams here with Brian Lynch on "Guajira Dubois," a game of musical tag between Palmieri's piano and Lynch's trumpet.

The driving rhythm behind most Latin jazz comes from its powerful percussion, and Latin Jazz showcases some of the finest in this field. Master conguero (congo player) Poncho Sanchez leads one of the most popular Latin jazz groups in the world. His seasoned ensemble contribute the cool energy of "El Sabroson", while Ray Barretto covers the classic "Summertime." Considered the "godfather of Latin jazz," Barretto was the first Latino to have a Latin hit on the American Billboard Charts.

Other luminaries on the album include Hilton Ruiz, a former child prodigy who appeared at Carnegie Hall at the age of 8, Chocolate Armenteros, the legendary Cuban trumpet player, and Manny Oquendo & Libre, who represent a multigenerational dynasty of Latin music. Icelandic double-bassist Tómas R. Einarsson, and New York icon Chico Alvarez round out the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Putumayo.......2007-08-07

This is my favorite, though all Putumayo that I have heard has been great as well. GREAT dancing music as well.

5 out of 5 stars Suprising.......2007-06-15

After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10

I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13

All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04

I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars If I could only choose infinity for the stars!.......2006-03-17

This cd is awsome! I can listen to it over and over, never tiring of it. How many cds can a person really say that about? Spectacular music, great voices, neat lyrics-it is a must have! I felt an immediate passion for Pepe and The Bottle Blondes, the same passion that I feel for Pink Martini, and that is truly saying something!

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2006-03-13

I absolutely love this album! I stumbled across it while searching music on Pink Martini (another great group) and after previewing its songs, had to order it. If you're new to latin music this is a great CD to start with because it's going to get you hooked. And if you already have an appreciation for latin/salsa music then you're definitely going to want to add this to your collection. I could listen to it over and over again. It's very happy music that makes you want to get up and dance. Perfect for dinner parties!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the CD.......2006-01-31

A great CD, fun to listen to. Enjoyed by even our more conservative as well as our kids. Just a hoot.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Ya Wanna Shake It!.......2006-01-14

This is perhaps the most FUN I've ever heard on a CD! This CD is fantastic! Every single person that has heard it (through me) has purchased it and now they are turning everyone else onto it as well! If you ever thought of dance lessons, this will do the trick to get you out there! All ages and all types of people LOVE this CD! I just ordered their new CD and cannot wait to receive it! Who said that Pepe does not compare to Pink Martini? They are two different sounds and one should not compare the two.

5 out of 5 stars Even more fun in person..........2005-11-15

This group tours in the Pacific Nortwest, and I've had the chance to see them a couple of times... they are so much fun! Very campy and a little over the top and always fun, and the music is just great. This CD is a great sampling of their talent and their enthusiam for the music, and it's right up there with my favorites, which do include Pink Martini. But to that moron who said in his review that they don't compare to Pink Martini... phhffttt! That's like comparing the B-52s to U2... No, they aren't quite the same class of musicians and vocalists, but what they lack in style they more than make up in heart and just plain fun.
