The follow-up to Fairy of the Woods, Fairy NightSongs, and Fairy HeartMagic finds Gary Stadler back at the piano spinning out lush emotive songs that conjure moonbeams, star-blanketed nights, and enchanted forests. Layers of light synthesizer, Lisa Lynne's dreamy Celtic harp, and the fantasy language lyrics of fine new vocalist Stephannie dance with Stadler's soft-pedaled playing. Fairy HeartMagic, rather than featuring starkly individual pieces, plays more like slightly varied movements of one unified piece, just right for pre-slumber, soft-focus Saturday mornings, or unwinding after a long afternoon. While not written specifically for children, little ones will find this frolicsome but gentle music pleasant to the ears and soothing to the psyche. Stadler, whose songs often begin as bedtime songs for his wife, has composed and arranged a dilly of a lullaby for the magical landscape of vision and reverie. --Paige La Grone

Album Description

Acclaimed composer Gary Stadler (Fairy of the Woods, Fairy NightSongs) takes you further into the world of ancient Celtic lore, featuring extraordinary " Enya-esque" vocalist Stephannie and Celtic Harpist Lisa Lynne. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Actually 14 tracks.......2007-03-20

I was going to rate this 4 stars, because I was unhappy to find so many instrumental tracks. They are pretty (though nothing special), but there are 6 of them. Out of twelve that's disappointing, but then I read the booklet and found that there are an additional 2 tracks you can get on the computer. One of them is called Story, which is more of a spoken poem; the other I'm not sure but I'm calling it Far Away and it's very beautiful.
A lovely album altogether.

About the extra tracks, you can get them only on the computer. For windows I'm not sure, but the 'presentation' doesn't work on my Mac. However, you can access the folder called 'gary media' and drag the tracks to iTunes (or your desktop). Along with the two complete songs, you also get a lot of sample songs for other albums.

The booklet that comes along with the CD explains how to get the tracks, and has the lyrics for the 12 tracks on the CD. Pretty artwork!

Very different from the first Gary Stadler CD I got, Deep Within a Faerie Forest (the tracks in addition to being beautiful are also cool), which I recommend, but Stephannie has a sweet voice and the songs are pleasing to the ear with a few treasures.

5 out of 5 stars Very Soothing.......2007-03-02

Do you need some soothing, yet uplifting background music? That is what I was looking for, and I was not disappointed! It is suitable for an adult, who I purchased it for, as well as children for quiet times. I will be checking out more titles from this artist.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting~.......2006-03-09

I disagree with Marc Ruby... Stephaine has a beautiful voice.
Its my fav of all the Gary Stadler Fairy cd's..Stepahine's voice takes you to another time..another place.. I love it! Wish I could find more of her but so far have been unable to..
This Cd is definalty worth your money!

3 out of 5 stars Definitely off the beaten path.......2005-11-09

This is a CD I enjoy. It is definitely not within the mainstream of most musical styles. It was the inclusion of Lisa Lynne on a couple of selections that encouraged me to buy it without having heard it. Generally, I was not disappointed although this CD doesn't inspire me as much as some other New Age and Native American music I have.
For me, the treasure in this CD is the song "Sa'Brooke", which features Stephannie singing softly over gentle, evocative music in a gaelic-sounding language which, according to the insert, she essentially came up with herself. Her voice is sweet, passionate and inspiring in a simple melody which perfectly compliments the gentle arrangement.
"Deanash", though nice, is basically "Garden of Dreams" without the vocals or orchestral arrangement. The same could be said for "Heartmagic", a piano solo which is really "Sa'Brooke" without the vocals or orchestral arrangement. To my ear, these two variations represent a failure on the part of the producer to avoid repetitiveness.
It is a good CD for background ambiance while reading or writing.

4 out of 5 stars Fairy This, Fairy That........2005-05-02

This is the kind of album that pushes me into a new age crisis. While there is nothing inherently wrong with it, the fact that Stadler opted for a 'cute' title and album cover is a warning that the potential for great silliness in the name of a music genre lurks in the bushes.

For the most part, this never materializes, although my slight deafness reduces the impact of lyrics that are a bit lightheaded. Musically the album is sometimes hackneyed (angelic choirs, etc.), but always pleasant to hear. Little moments, like Deanash make up for the less successful parts and overall I rate this album as good background for contemplative or creative moments.

This album was originally intended for performance with Singh Kaur. Unfortunately, the singer died before the recording and Stephannie took Singh Kaur's place. Unfortunately, I say, because Stephannie's voice has a 'little girl' edge and breathiness that was totally absent from Singh Kaur's. This gives the singing a trivial sound when it deserves better. On the bright side, though, is Lisa Lynne's appearance on harp. Essentially, this is a break-even for the listener.

Frankly, I would go with Fairy Night Songs and only buy this album if it is exactly your cup of tea. New age vocals are difficult on a good day and you are likely to be a bit disappointed. Listen to Fairy Night Songs and Sa'Brooke - you will see what I mean. But the instrumental work is good. You will have to decide for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ethel Waters: the first African-American superstar !!!.......2007-01-14

A heat wave blew right into town last week,
She came from the island of Martinique,
The can-can she dances will make you fry
The can-can is really the reason why

We're having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The temperature's rising,
It isn't surprising,
She certainly can can-can.

She started a heat wave
By letting her seat wave
In such a way that
The customers say that
She certainly can can-can.

Gee, her anatomy
Makes the mercury
Jump to ninety-three.

We're having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The way that she moves
That thermometer proves
That she certainly can can-can.

Ethel Waters sang with great passion and she captivated her audiences wherever she went. Ethel was truly the first African-American superstar: she excelled in song, stage and motion pictures. Ethel pursued the fine arts never afraid of the touchy issues of racism and heated romantic moments. We are so much better off because Ethel shared her talent with us; and this CD is an excellent selection of some of her finest songs.

Ethel was equally at home singing hot numbers about romance or belting out torch songs to describe the sadder feelings we all experience in love and life. The CD begins with the Irving Berlin classic "Heat Wave" recorded by Ethel in 1933 with Benny Goodman on trumpet. The musical arrangement is wonderful and Ethel's voice is rich, vibrant and full of energy. The CD takes a sharp 180 degree turn for the next track entitled "I Just Couldn't Make It, Baby." In this song Ethel expresses how she just can't forget a man for whom she has feelings. Ethel also performs "Stormy Weather" flawlessly with Tommy Dorsey on trombone and Jimmy Dorsey playing both clarinet and alto saxophone.

Other classic songs on this CD include "(What Did I Do To Be So) Black And Blue?" which deals with racial issues and the singer's need for black pride; "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone;" the very sassy "Maybe Not At All;" and the very romantic "Memories Of You."

Ethel wasn't shy about taking on her rivals, either. "Harlem On My Mind" gently pokes fun at Josephine's Baker's style; and the lyrics to "Come Up And See Me Sometime" even go so far as to call Mae West "an Eskimo." "Come Up And See Me Sometime" is perfectly arranged as well. Ethel sings this number with Tommy Dorsey on trombone and Jimmy Dorsey on both clarinet and alto saxophone.

Ethel's incredible entertainment continues. Ethel does a great rendition of "Cabin In The Sky" accompanied by Max Meth and his Orchestra. "Taking A Chance On Love" is absolutely beautiful; and the CD concludes with the playful and joyous "Honey In The Honeycomb." Excellent!

The liner notes feature great black and white photos of Ethel Waters both on stage and at MGM with Duke Ellington during the filming of Cabin In The Sky in 1943. Donald Bogle contributes a fascinating essay about the tough personal life Ethel Waters endured as she entertained millions of people in the public eye.

There will never be another Ethel Waters. When Ethel Waters sang you listened--and you listened closely, too, because she always gave 110% and she possessed an abundance of natural talent. Thank God for Ethel Waters--this lady graced us generously with her art!

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad introduction to Ethel Waters' music.......2004-12-22

Ethel Waters possessed one of the most breath-takingly gorgrous voices of our time, she also was a spectacular jazz singer. She did a great vocal version of Louis Armstrongs classic West End Blues! This cd will work as a good introduction to Ethel'scharming style of singing. She was technicly a swinging jazz singer, though her mannerisms were vaudevillian, such as the way she OVER-pernounces her r's, and how she rolls her R's. While other singers did that and sound dated today, it sounds charming when Ethel does it, and her vocie is just so pretty. One of the greatest singer sof all time.

Interesting facts:
Ethel Waters toured with Billy Graham's crusades in the 50's until she died, she became a Cgristian, and sang Gospel music in her later career!

She also stars is an exellent film "Cabin in the Sky", which is worth finding and watching.

This set is primarily for devoted fans of Beverly Sills, for fans of Sherrill Milnes in his prime, and for those who must have the uncut version where it's available. The estimable Ms. Sills was in less than ideal voice for the making of this recording, which is unfortunate, but the artistry still shines through. Mr. Milnes sings with rich tone. But Lorin Maazel's conducting is leaden and out of empathy with the score. --Sarah Bryan Miller

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lapsing Faith and Lost Beauty.......2006-09-23

The reason I assign the recording four stars rather than five is that the pathos of the opera strikes me as too extreme. The same combination of exquisite beauty and suffocating pathos turns up in Barbra Streisand's song "The Way we Were." Beverly Sills sings the pathetic part of Thais to the hilt; and Massenet's familiar "religious meditation" does the rest. All of these intensely pathetic operas including Pagliacci and Tosca derive from the epoch-making example of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde with its unrelieved love-and-death sorrow. As a Christian I associate this powerful tradition with lapsing faith in Europe after 1865. Massenet's opera treats the early Christian monks of Egypt as caught up in tragic error. Thais is a supremely beautiful woman won from a life of immorality to Christianity by a well-intentioned monk who knew her in his earlier days. As the converted Thais lives and dies for the abstract reward of heaven, the monk grieves over the beauty he has destroyed. The real spiritual solution to the dilemma posed by the opera lies in the correlation between future resurrection, universal vitality and intense beauty; but theologians have generally missed he point and shown more interest in heaven than in concrete resurrection. In any case there was no way out for Massenet and his source.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish Thais Set.......2005-10-16

This 1976 recording of Thais is my favorite of the two recordings I have - the other being the Fleming/Hampson. Sills' vibrato is a little more pronounced here than it was a few years earlier, but it doesn't bother me. She still has a gorgeous voice and brings this conflicted character vividly to life. Having studied with the likes of Mary Garden as a young singer, Sills has an innate understanding of the French style, and uses her voice with much imagination and flair. Also, the character of Thais is not supposed to be a young girl - an aging courtesan of 30ish or so... Sherrill Milnes, in a departure from his usual Italian repertoire, sings a most impassiaoned Athaneal - the voice full and resonant, the character's obessiveness wonderfully realized. I think he never did anything better on disc. Nicolai Gedda is a little past his best here, but like Sills understands the French style and delivers the vocal goods as required. Maazel conducts an exciting performance (even playing the solo violin in the Meditation himself) and the sound is excellent. The Fleming/Hampson set is beautifully sung, but I feel the drama of the story is not fully realized somehow - hard to put my finger on what's missing there. This Thais is one of my favorite French opera recordings - recommended highly.

    5 out of 5 stars AN UNDER-APPRECIATED GEM.......2004-12-03

Late 19th-century French opera is often disparaged these days, which isn't really fair. Delibes had some beautiful melodies, and Massenet was a much better composer than many give him credit for. And although "Manon" and "Werther" may be more famous, to me, his late opera "Thais" is his masterpiece. There are three major recordings of this opera, one with Anna Moffo, Gabriel Bacquier and Jose Carreras, a recent one with Renee Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Giuseppe Sabattini, and this 1976 recording with Beverly Sills, Sherill Milnes, and Nicolai Gedda. All three versions have their strengths and weaknesses. The Moffo/Bacquier vesion, although excellent and showing Carreras in his prime, is unavailable. (I'm not sure it was ever issued in CD.) The Fleming/Hampson recording is also excellent--Fleming has a gorgeous and luscious voice, and Hampson a silky smooth baritone--but I find myself reaching for the Sills/Milnes version most often.
Sills was past her prime when she recorded this, and her high notes are a little thin and sometimes wobbly. Nevertheless, her artistry is so great that she infuses the role of the courtesan with the tremendous drama the role requires. Thais' radical change of character, from the insouciant hedonist to the redeemed penitent, is gloriously demonstrated in Sills' portrayal.
And this opera is as much about Athanael as it is Thais. Milnes, at the height of his career when he recorded this in 1976, brings tremendous power and vitality to the role of the priest, whose reverse progression from moralistic religious surety to tortured doubt parallels that of Thais, the object of his forbidden love. Nicolai Gedda's singing is, as always, stylish and graceful, and Loren Maazel's reading of the score is well paced and forceful. This recording belongs in all opera collections.

    1 out of 5 stars A fad.......2004-05-21

This Thais is ruined by Sills. Buy Renee Fleming's Thais instead. She has the big voice, the looks and the talent. Sills didn't, all she can do is make my ears bleed. Shame on that shrieker!

3 out of 5 stars Lovely but too late.......2004-02-24

I have a live-recording with Sills which is MUCH better. Sills was always at her best live on stage. For studio-recordings get the Fleming-set or the sadly cut recording with the divine Renee Doria. (My favourite Thais)

5 out of 5 stars How could anyone get along without Mildred Bailey's music!.......2005-02-15

Mildred Bailey was not just the first real Jazz band singer. She was one of the earliest real jazz singers and she continued to have a jazz based strain to her singing throughout her career unlike some singers with her success who might have gone more pop. She was fun. She was fun. She was fun. She jived, she joked, she played. You are going to smile when you hear Mildred and know she is really serious when she is serious. She could bring out the jazz in the most wooden of accompaniest, but usually she had great musicians, white, black or otherwise playing behind her, because Mildred is fun.

In an age before television, Bailey continued to have fans white and Black who did not know she was white. This remains true even recently when I have loaned tapes of Mildred to other African Americans without any liner notes or anything and had them ask why they had never heard of this great Black singer.

However, I do find it distressing that Mildred Bailey seems to be so forgotten. She was the first prominent female band singer in Jazz. She was and is fun to listen to and a great voice. Mildred was actually able to swing and swing hard even with Paul Whiteman. She produced masterpieces using some of the same small groups as Billie Holday for HER Columbia recordings, although Bailey semed to prefer Herschal Evans to Lester Young. Bailey was also pretty out front for the time as a white female singer performing with an all black combo--"Mildred Baily and Her Oxford Browns." Mildred was simply magnificent in the small combos her husband Red Novro organized, She had a sense of humor about her performances and a bit of salaciousness that you won't find in Billie's recordings.

I don't think it was just out of sentimentality, but in tribute to her artistry, that Sinatra and Bing Crosby (who owed his career to Bailey's bringing him in contact with Whiteman)spent thousands of dollars helping her out in the last years of her life when health problems and the end of her career led her to very hard times.

Mildred was a great singer, a great jazz pioneer, and a lot of fun. How does anyone get along without the joy her music has brought to my life. There have been times when my life was worse than it is now when I was depressed and just thinking about one of Mildred's tracks on this CD started to turn my life around!

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a fabulous swing singer.......2003-08-18

Mildred Bailey is one of the great "lost" figures in the history of American swing jazz, a vocalist who helped discover, promote and influence the careers of Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby and Tony Bennett (to name a few), and who recorded prolifically throughout the 1920s, '30s and '40s, before falling into poverty and ill health in the early 'Fifties. Her music was, quite simply, nothing short of stunning -- fans of Billie Holiday's sprightly early swing recordings will be amazed at the similarity between these two singers... But make no mistake: Bailey was there first, and to fans, her work is certainly on a par with that of the better-remembered Lady Day. This is a well-selected, generously programmed 18-track single-CD selection of some of Bailey's best recordings on Columbia, featuring her big hit, "Rocking Chair," and other lively swing tunes. Sure, you could quibble about this song or that being left out, but for the casual record buyer, this is a great introduction to Bailey's work, and a nice glimpse of her belting 'em out during her prime. Highly recommended!

Anita is the love of my life. I bought her a drink one night at NYC's Phat Tuesday's where she was working. Yes. I showed up again for her on night two. I also heard Anita one afternoon with Oscar Peterson at Saratoga Performing Arts. This CD passes muster. Everything she does has to be compared to her "Time For 2 Cal Tjaer" CD
Go buy it, folks. She truly is the greatest!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Incomparable.......2002-06-25

The title said it all "Incomparable". Anita O'Day is just one fine "cool jazz" singer. Great music to enjoy!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Great O'Day!.......2002-05-27

Anita started the "cool" school of jazz singing - her vocalese & scatting is always musically right, and not just showing off. This album had a strange sound to it when first pressed on LP, but this CD transfer has corrected the flat sound that was inherent. Bill Holman's inventive arrangements propel Anita in one of the most creative sessions that she had for Verve. Anita was always miles ahead of her imitators, and always, the hippest chick in Jazz. And dig that groovy ice-blue eyeliner!

Perfectly showcases Howard Keel's gorgeous, powerful voice. His version of Memory from Cats just lovely.

        5 out of 5 stars Golden Voice.......2004-02-13

I've enjoyed Howard Keel's musicals, my favorite being Kiss Me Kate. I bought this CD along with the soundtrack of Kiss Me Kate, based on the reviews I read here.

This CD was very impressive and Mr. Keel's voice comes through with the same power and clarity of his earlier recordings and performances during MGM's golden musical days.

It's a fine example of his range, his narrative ability (in the Don Quixote medley), bold and brassy voice as in Bless Your Beautiful Hide, Oklahoma to softer ballads like Memory from Cats, Dulcinea (Don Quixote), Some Enchanted Evening. So in Love is delivered in the seductive beguine style of Were Thine that Special Face as originally performed in Kiss Me Kate.

Beautifully done CD and a fine representation of Mr. Keel's "incomparable" talents. A real gem.

5 out of 5 stars THE WONDERFUL INCOMPARABLE HOWARD KEEL.......2002-06-22

HOWARD KEEL TRULY HAS AN INCOMPARABLE MANLY VOICE! THIS IS JUST A WONDERFUL CD. HE HAS A RICH DEEP DEEP BASS VOICE AND HE PUTS IT TO GREAT USE. SONGS FROM "OLAHOMA", SHOWBOAT, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, "MAN FROM LA MANCHA". THIS IS THE FIRST CD I HAVE EVER BOUGHT OF HOWARD AND I LOVED IT! LOVED "OLE MAN RIVER" THE BEST. HE SINGS 16 SONGS AND ALL ARE WONDERFUL! I HAVE HIS MOVIES, TOO! THIS WOULD MAKE A WONDERFUL GIFT FOR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES. THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT!!!!!1 CAN'T WAIT TO BUY ANOTHER CD WITH HIM ON IT. TRULY A WONDERFUL MUST BUY!

        5 out of 5 stars What a Voice, What a Man!.......2002-03-01

Howard Keel is an all around talented man. He can act and sing like no other, and looks stunning too boot. I have been a collector of Howard movies and soundtracts for sometime now, but just recently purchased this CD, and I must say it is wonderful. Howard's voice is so powerful and deep, it's hard not to fall in love with him. The highlights of this ablum are definatly the Medley's, each about 7 minutes long. He does a wonderful job on all, but particularly, "With You I'm Born Again," "And I Love You So," and "So in Love." There are a lot of classics on here, but they can be enjoyed by all ages (I am a college student and adore it). The only song that is a little different is "Bless Your Beautiful Hide," which is a different version than the one done on the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers soundtract. It is a bit silly (he sounds giddy :), but will give you a good chuckle. I strongly urge you to purchase this CD so you can experience a true representation of manhood, through Howard's wonderful singing.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Romero is Aptly Named.......2006-12-27

Before my father died in November, he told me about the Romeros and how much he had loved listening to them on a PBS special a few years ago and how their guitar playing never left his heart. He said that they were a national treasure in Spain and that he had tried to find their CDs for years but couldn't find them. I found the CDs here at Amazon ten minutes later. He died before the CDs arrived, but I sat down with a bottle of claret and listened to them-- this is one of my favourites that I ordered. On here, Angel's music brought me to tears and then to my knees as I listened to him strum Beetoven's Adagio from Moonlight Sonata. To me, classical music is more lovely on guitar than it is on piano, probably because my father loved it and passed on his love, but it's also more relaxing. Guitar music becomes a seduction under Angel's mastery. Look at his CD picture-- Angel is a stud, a cabellero if there ever was one. His passion is conveyed through his music.

We played this CD and several others by the Romeros at my father's funeral and people stopped and paused and listened and smiled and commented on how lovely the music was. It's soothing without putting the listener to sleep. I had never appreciated classical music before and this CD has made me take a few lessons on guitar so I can understand it better and appeciate the artistry more.

        4 out of 5 stars Beautiful !!.......2005-12-19

I have many CDs of other classical guitarists like John William, Julian Bream, David Russel etc. I decided to try out Angel Romero's "Bella" and was simply awe struck. Every single track is exquisitely interpreted and played with such musicianship seldom found elsewhere. His phrasing and the tone of his sound is amazing. He uses a Daniel Friedrich guitar in this recording and the sound quality is top notch. This collection is dedicated to his parents and contains some of the most relaxing and beautiful guitar music you can find. The only reason why i gave four instead of five stars is because i was hoping for some fast tracks in the CD but other than that you will not regret it! Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars Incomparable indeed!.......2002-07-12

For those of you who know Angel Romero and his family, this is a confirmation of their undebatable status as the first family of Spanish guitar. For those of you who do not, this is a good introduction to the best form of art of its kind.
